Halloween Writing Challenge 1:

Monsters in the Mirror

Prompt:

🎭 We all wear masks, but what happens when that mask slips? For this challenge, write a chilling short story or flash fiction where a character’s hidden, monstrous nature reveals itself at a seemingly innocent Halloween gathering.

Is the monster literal, or does it come from within? As fear takes hold, identities blur and the true horrors emerge.

Focus on psychological horror, exploring themes of self-deception, suppressed desires, and twisted identity.

The monster in your story can be metaphorical or literal, but make sure the story challenges the character’s—and the reader’s—perception of who the real monster is.

The story should contain elements of dark transformation (physical, mental, or emotional), making the reader question the true nature of monstrosity.

⚡ The Twist: The true ‘monster’ should be unexpected. By the end of the story, reveal a hidden truth that changes everything the reader thought they knew.

🕸️ Word Count: 700–2,000 words. Keep it tight and packed with suspense.

🦇 Bonus: Subtly introduce classic horror tropes, with a fresh twist.
