Nest of the Asian Honeybee

Here we have the poisoned nest of the Asian Honeybee (Apis cerana). If you’re wondering why the nest was poisoned, it’s because this species is actually quite damaging to this area. The Asian Honeybee not only leaves in competition with native bees over nesting areas and food, but they may also carry a certain nasty mite known as the ‘Varroa mite’ (genus Varroa), which can be detrimental to European Honeybee populations (Apis mellifera) (1).

Lets take a closer look at this nest shall we. First we’ll start off with the eggs. You can see an egg inside a brood cell in picture 9. The eggs are very small, and take about three days to develop. After which the fat little larvae emerge, curling up and waiting to be fed by the worker bees. When the larva becomes large enough, the brood cell will be sealed, so the larva’s pupation will be undisturbed. The adult bee will chew its way out of the cell after emerging from the pupae (2).

You can tell which brood cell belongs to which kind of bee based on its appearance. The drones have a distinctly dome-shaped cap with a large pour in the center (pic. 7). Then, of course, there’s the queen’s brood cell, which is large, round and on the edge of the nest (pics 5-6) (3).

When it comes to this species, it’s important to stay informed about the ways in which they are damaging for the environment.

it's been a decade but i'm still not over the insanity that is the movie Jupiter Ascending

spoilers ahead, but this movie was slammed when it was released. sitting pretty at a 27%/38% on rotten tomatoes, it was critiqued on essentially every single aspect by a large majority of viewers. almost everyone hated it. almost.

i can't speak for what the the wachowskis actually intended, but this movie is a homage to every 12 year old dreamer writing acidentally self insert stories with unrestrained enthusiasm.

the main character played by Mila Kunis is named Jupiter. no literally. Jupiter Jones.

movie opens with Jupiter living an uneventful, monotonous life. there's a montage of her waking up early, going to work as a house cleaner, waking up early, going to work as a house cleaner, repeat.

within 20 minutes of runtime she is about to be murdered by aliens but is saved bridal carry style by channing tatum rolling in on hover skates. yes exactly what you're picturing. he also has a laser gun that barks when he shoots it. no im not kidding.

channing tatum is a wolf man hybrid. his name is Caine Wise. yes, "dog man", exactly, his name is literally Dog Man. he has pointy ears. "bred for the military but that didn't work out for me". after he saves Jupiter, she is unconscious and wakes up with a gun next to her bc Caine "thought it would make her feel better". he is Guarded and Rough yet Kind and Gentle.

it is later in the movie revealed he used to have wings, pretty feather angel-wings looking wings, but they were ripped off because he broke the rules. he has scars on his back. it's all very man pain. the movie makes a poorly masked point of talking about how he's a wolf man without a pack while the camera is pointed at Jupiter.

Jupiter spends most of the movie alternating between fainting, being kidnapped and holding her own against people wanting to kill her. you know, she's Powerful and Cool and Kickass but also has hunky yet sensitive men saving her. at one point a man who planned to murder Jupiter insults her and Caine with asks "may i kill him" but Jupiter says no so he doesn't. (she has a guard dog she literally has a guard dog im-).

she has several wardrob changes and she's either dressed in flannels, snassy space movie outfits or the most beautiful dresses you could imagine.

another character is Stinger Apini played by Sean Bean. he's a human honey bee hybrid. im still not joking. he gets little gold hexagon in his eyes sometimes. he uses "beeswax" as a swear.

while Caine and Stinger have a little "you betrayed me last time we saw each other" fight, a bunch of Stinger's bees start swarming Jupiter, following her movements like some kind of avatar water bending powers. this means she's royalty. because "bee's are genetically designed to recognize royalty" (sean bean says this with a completely straight face for which he deserves an award). Jupiter is space royalty. queen, to be exact. she's queen of a bunch of planets, including earth.

Jupiter Jones, normal human girl from a boring, monotonous life, is Queen of Earth.

she's one of the most important people in the universe and has a hot wolf man saving her at every turn. this movie was written for every little sensitive, creative child inside the heart of a adult clinging to their imagination and dreams.

the movie has about eight bad guys but oscar-winner and acclaimed actor eddie redmayne plays the top bad guy. eddie did this movie coming off the backs of Les Misérables and The Theory of Everything. i can only assume he the casting director knew about a murder he’s committed and blackmailed him into doing this movie.

eddie's character name is Balem Abrasax (a fine, 'character name generator'-name) and he either whispers or blows out the speakers.

one hour into the movie it takes a break and does a 'space bureaucracy is like the DMV'-bit as Jupiter, with the help of a robot named Intergalactic Advocate Bob, tries to claim her title as queen. there's a montage where they are sent around to get documents so they can get other documents so they can get other documents only they can't get those documents before submitting the first document and-

jupiter gets a cool glowing tattoo on her wrist and then the movie jumps back into space opera and she's kidnapped and saved a few more times.

jupiter tries so hard to seduce Caine but he resist bc He's Broken and Dangerous and Does Not Deserve Her. the third act kicks off with Jupiter (the person) inside Jupiter (the planet) with Balem who will most certinly hurt her, so Stinger give Caine a pep talk about how much he loves Jupiter and he has to go save her.

mind, they've known each other for about two days and Jupiter has been kidnapped three times so they've only spent about half of that time together. but it's TRUE LOVE goddamnit. Caine looks like he's about to cry when Stinger tells him to go after the girl. then he sets his jaw very masculinely and proceed to fly a little spacecraft though the storm clouds dodging lightning

they kiss during the last fight, defeat the last bad guy and then movie cut to later. now Jupiter is waking up early and happily go about cleaning houses, only she pauses to look at the glowing tattoo on her wrist proving she owns Earth and after work she goes on a date with her wolf man boyfriend who got his wings back so now she uses the hover boots and they go flying together. the end.

movie has so many stupid little quips and bits and funny quotes. the amount of fanfic tropes used would kill you if you did a take a shot-game. it's so silly. so so silly. it's stupid and the pacing is atrocious and the dialouge is so campy it hurts sometimes and the action scenes are a mess of visual effects than nearly give you motion sickness and they are about ten minutes each which is nine minutes to long and i love this movie with all my heart.

it's the most comfort movie to ever comfort. it's little younger me sitting up at night dreaming up insane stories. it's younger me pretending to hoverboard alongside the car on long drives. it's wanting to feel special and loved and go on cool adventures. it's endless imagination wrapped up in a stupid little story with stupid little characters with stupid little names written with pure love for the child inside every creative person.

i will die defending this movie. go watch it

2023 Secret Santa Update

Hello, everyone!

I'd like to start with an apology: I meant to write this post several weeks ago but life, as it so often does, got in the way and I completely dropped the ball. I'm really sorry about that, particularly for those of you who were waiting around for information about this event.

Not to follow bad news with worse, but I won't be doing the JA Secret Santa his year. Real life responsibilities are definitely a factor here—my life has gotten exponentially more busy after securing a new job post-quarantine—but if I'm honest I've been toying with taking a step back for a while now. It's really hard to do an exchange with this small a number, both when it comes to organizing it in a way that participants will enjoy (wait, didn't I get them last year? And two years before that?) and when it comes to managing any inevitable snags. If someone is late or fails to produce a gift in a normal exchange, you've got numerous pinch hitters in the wings to help out. Here, it's suddenly down to just 2-3 people—or me—and consistently the last few years we've been running into snags not easily remedied.

However, I definitely don't want this to be a JA devoid holiday! My current thinking is to do something community-based with a bit more flexibility, so that participants still have the opportunity to create gifts, but no one is pressured to finish, or is tied to an individual giftee in a way that isn't working well for our numbers. So I had planned to post a list of prompts on December 1st, a mix of very broad ideas (like a genre) and more specific challenges (a pairing, trope, and line to include). Participants are welcome to fill any and all prompts they like, as well as comment via the post on those they'd particularly like to see. Spend the month making a big gift for a friend. Make fifty for the whole fandom!

Gifts would still be due December 23rd.

I'm also VERY open to suggestions on how this might work—as well as prompts! Please send any and everything to the ask box/my chat.

I know this will be disappointing to people, but I hope this middle ground is a silver lining.

oh i'm curious about the ones with insect species and overall mods that make the game prettier (textures, more furniture, etc)

If you want pre-made insect people with their own stuff and lore there are the Apini (bee people) and Motz (moth people). Apini use the Humanoid Alien Races mod, but the Motz require the Biotech expansion.

The fairies I made were made with parts from Alpha Genes, Outland Genetics, and Big and Small genetics.

Or if you're just looking for actual bugs, Alpha Animals and Biomes! Caverns have a lot of cool ones.

I typically use Outland Terrain for the ground, water, and stone textures, though Clean Textures is also a popular one. Or if you want something closer to the vanilla feel there's "Better Ground Textures?"

To make the game overall look cleaner/less blurry there are mods like Graphics Settings+, Vanilla Textures Expanded, High Quality Textures, Vanilla Hair Retextured, Vanilla Beards Retextured, Retextured Apparel, Vanilla Pawns Retextured, Oracle+ Erin's HD Tattoos... And to get a better look at things I highly recommend Camera+ to zoom in way further. Also a lot of mods also have retextures if you look them up, so if you don't like a mod's artstyle there's probably a retexture for it.

And if you'd like your pawns to have more life and personality there is the [NL] Facial Animation Mod. It has a sort of anime style, but if you'd like to keep a somewhat more vanilla feel there's also the Vanilla Textures Expanded - [NL] Facial Animation mod. If you have Biotech I would also recommend using the Facial Animations Xenotype Compatibility patch.

For furniture mods, there are things like Gloomy Furniture, Erin's Cottage Collection, basically anything in the Vanilla Expanded Furniture and Factions collections, Fishing Decorative, Gothicstyle Vampire Furniture, ATH's Style Draconic and ATH's Style Gothic and Bloody Gothic, Gerrymon's Nautian Style.

And since I tend to turn my game into a medieval fantasy you will often see the lovely stuff from either Outland Furniture or more often Medieval Overhaul (there's a lot of overlap between and their styles are similar), though do note the latter is a well and true overhaul of things and will change some of the games mechanics and stuff. There is a "toggles" patch you can get that lets you restore some vanilla mechanics though.

My modsets tend to get up to and over 300 mods, so uh. Yeah. Also highly recommend looking into Rimpy as a mod load order manager, it saves a lot of time and hassle.

Honestly, my bf may be right in that I may enjoy modding the game more than playing it lol so if you or anyone ever has a type of game in mind they want to do and need mods, hit me up I would honestly probably enjoy helping someone made their own modpack.

Alternative version of the scene in Stinger's house, wherein Stinger and Kiza display some of their more bee-like traits...like honeybee communication.

Jupiter sipped her lemonade, still reeling from recent events. Something about it tasted just slightly off—it didn't taste bad, but not quite the expected flavor. She took another cautious sip. Oh. Honey. It was sweetened with honey, instead of sugar. That should not have been a surprise, considering the honeycombs everywhere. Stinger's bees appeared to have free run of the house as well as the yard.

Although, if Stinger actually harvested the honey and there was still this much honeycomb hanging off of every wall in the house, the number of bees he actually had must be staggering. Where did they find enough flowers to support a population that large? Was Stinger hiding massive fields of flowers behind the house or something? How would he find the time to keep up a flower farm and be a space cop?

Caine was still brooding on the other side of the room. Maybe not a good time to ask about space cop gardening. Was that why he was pissed off? Was she asking too many questions? He had obviously expected the questions about aliens, and he seemed to enjoy explaining the gravity boots. On the other hand, by the time they'd arrived at Stinger's door, his explanations been really terse...perhaps she had used up his patience with “Terrsie” ignorance.

Kiza might be willing to explain. She seemed nice. And so far, the only other person present not to have immediately waded into a fistfight over some undisclosed history, which was moderately reassuring as far as temperament. Actually, maybe Kiza was the gardener of the family.

Jupiter frowned. It was awfully quiet in here. Obviously Caine was glowering quietly out the window, but Stinger and Kiza had looked like they were stepping aside for a discussion, yet Jupiter couldn't hear anyone talking. She glanced behind her, over the back of the couch.

Her jaw dropped. Stinger and Kiza were indeed just in the next room. And they weren't talking.

Kiza had scooped up reusable shopping bags with her left hand. Her right hand fluttered rapidly at her side as she paced slowly across the kitchen. She looped around to her right and headed back in the other direction, her hand moving across her body to flutter near her left hip. Stinger was silently watching this performance with measured consideration, like a judge on a reality TV dancing competition.

The hand holding Jupiter's forgotten lemonade glass dropped to her knee, making the ice cubes rattle softly. In her peripheral vision, Jupiter vaguely noticed Caine's head turn in her direction at the sound. So much for not bugging Caine with more questions. This was way too bizarre to just ignore. One of his eyebrows was raised quizzically at her.

She shot one more surreptitious glance over her shoulder before quietly hissing “What are they doing?!”

Caine's focus moved past her to take in the action in the next room. His brow furrowed as he watched, and his lips moved slightly as if he was mentally sounding something out.

“Kiza says...she's going to the store 5.4 miles into town to the northeast instead of the usual one 2.3 miles due north, because they're having a good sale on...” Caine paused, squinting fiercely at Kiza's odd dance for a solid 10 seconds, “some kind of poultry, I think...” He shrugged. “Sorry, there's more to it, but my Apian is a little rusty—you'd have to ask Stinger.”

then channing tatum, your non-threatening werewolf-angel bodyguard who also has elf ears shows up to rescue you from the bad guys. he has angst, and a jetpack. He's called Caine Wise.

then eddie redmayne, non-threatening but evil ceo/prince of the universe shows up and is obsessed with you for reasons. He's kinda bsdm-damaged-shy flavored.

His brother, who is also evil but more charming-playboy flavored, is also obsessed with you. he looks like this.

Both evil prince brothers want you to marry them, and work really hard to trick/blackmail/convince you into doing this. You get to wear a lot of different dresses.

100 FILMS IN 2015 → Jupiter Ascending (2015) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ “I CREATE LIFE!! …And I destroy it.”

Here is my feeling about this movie: it is your garbage. It is garbage for you. “Is this how straight dudes feel at the movies all the time????” I hissed SEVERAL times during this movie. “Like someone carefully noted down your early pubescent fantasies and then threw 100 MILLION DOLLARS at them?” 

Top marks go to evil space royal Eddie Redmayne, whose breathy ennui is offset by bouts of mummy’s boy shrieking, all delivered with a “petite-mort” look on his face that suggests he is being fellated by eternity itself.

Someone on tumblr described it as the novel all girls wrote when they were 14 and frothing with a mix of swelling hormones and fading Disney fantasies, which I have to say is accurate to the point of pain. I mean, gorgeous Russian toilet scrubber finds out she is actually a space princess when a werewolf space marine rescues her from death at the hands of Greys? Pardon me, werewolf ANGEL space marine with a Sad because his wings are gone. And then everything is Alexander McQueen dresses and melodrama and bees, for some reason, and Eddie Redmayne doing his best heroin-addicted Voldemort impression.

The plot is this: the Wachowskis were given an extraordinary amount of money to make whatever the hell they wanted, and what they wanted to make is exactly what we all, secretly, deep down, want to make: the big-screen adaptation of that Stargate fanfic you wrote when you were fourteen that really went off the rails and began to inhabit its own universe, complete with original characters, wolf-men, and bees. That’s Jupiter Ascending.
