Have you got any good resources for men’s clothing in Ireland (or even Scotland) during about the 1400’s-1600’s?
I have been trying to find anything that can give me better insight so I can recreate the clothing but so far I’m mostly seeing cheap rubbish costumes that are very clearly the generic “medieval” style that everyone goes to when they want to convey a vibe but don’t feel like doing historic accuracy.
Not to say there’s anything wrong with that but I’d like to really impress people in future gatherings that pertain to this time period
This is a tough one, unfortunately. The 2 best books for this have been out of print for decades and now sell second hand for $100+ USD. Your best bet for getting a hold of them is interlibrary loan. Neither of these books contains sewing patterns or construction information. They are:
Old Irish and Highland Dress by H. F. McClintock, 1st ed. 1943, 2nd ed 1950
Dress in Ireland by Mairead Dunlevy, 1st ed 1989, 2nd ed. 1999
The one book I know of that's still in print is Before the Kilt: How the Irish and Scots Dressed in the 16th Century by Gerald A. John Kelly. I haven't actually read it. I've heard it has some issues with the images being low resolution (probably because it was printed by a small press), but it does contain good primary source research. The only place I know of that sells legitimate sewing patterns is Reconstructing History. I haven't actually bought any, but I have heard that their sewing directions are not the easiest to follow, and some people have issues with the size grading. Their patterns for the wool garments are all based off of extant period garments. Based on more recent research, I don't their léine patterns are completely correct, but they are at least better than some of the léine patterns out there. (Avoid anyone who tells you to put drawstrings in the tops of the sleeves or that a man's léine should be hip-length.)
Websites of reenactors and historical costumers who have put serious research into their outfits:

A couple of decent videos on 16th-early 17th c Irish dress:
Traditional Irish Clothing in the Gaelic Period
Depicting and Describing Dress in Early Modern Ireland by Dr. Katherine Bond
If you're planning on doing the 16th c, definitely check out Susan Flavin's research. It has great information on what types of textiles, dyes, and trims that were available in 16th c. Ireland. You can download a pdf of her dissertation here.
I'm sure you already know that 1400s-1600s is a long time period for dress history. Irish dress changed a lot during that period. If your goal is to make a single, well-researched outfit, I would recommend picking a period that's somewhere 1500s-1600. There are a lot fewer primary sources (extant garments, art, documents, etc) for 1400s Ireland. On the other hand if you enjoy making educated guesses, 1400s might be more fun. Just check out this neat 15th c. outfit from Strade Abbey, County Mayo:
Tumblr media
If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask. I can't guarantee I have answers, but I do have a bunch of random Irish-dress-history related articles for this period on my computer.

TCR Birthday Bash 2019: Day 6- Free Day
So this is Part 3 of a three part crossover/Au between The Cat Returns and Jupiter Ascending. This one takes place after Part 1.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
“Captain we can’t hold any off any longer!”
“C’mon Baron,” Muta whisper, vehemently praying that his actions hadn’t costed him the lives of his best friend and Her Majesty sweet Haru.
“On my mark,” Captain Toto commanded full of fear-hope-despair. Seconds ticked by before he knew he couldn’t delay any longer, “Go!”
The Aegis Ship warp jumped out of the flaming wreckage happening all around it, withing seconds reappearing near Haru Yoshioka-Abrasax’s home planet of Earth with whatever was within the warp shield floating harmless around it.
Captain Toto sighed before asking for the status of his crew. Everyone on board including Mr. Moon were fine. Toto sighed again in both relief and regret.
“Captain?”
Toto turned to his Android communications officer.
“I’m picking up Mr. Gikkingen’s ping again.”
Toto quickly turned to his command station and hit a button that would allow him to connect with outside communication.
“Mr. Gikkingen?” Toto asked, barely breathing.
“Aegis crew, this is Baron Gikkingen. I have Her Majesty.” Cheers and shouts of joy rang out throughout the ship.
“Where are you?” Toto insisted, wanting both of them on board ASAP.
“You might want to look out a window or something,” Baron’s voice came over the speakers, it sounded like he was starting to crash. Toto quickly turned his gaze to the front shield screen.
“Someone wanna open a door please?” Baron slurred as he and Haru floated gently in front of the ship. Haru’s eyes were locked on her home planet, full of love and relief and joy.
Toto breathed in a sigh of relief. Everyone made it out okay and in one piece.
“Please open a door.”

Drawn after the Quick
(ie Drawn from Life)
Tumblr media
Colored woodcut print by an unknown English artist, generally dated to 1540-1550, possibly depicting Irish kerns who fought for King Henry VIII at the siege of Boulogne in 1544.
All 6 of the men wear a léine (linen tunic) with an ionar (short jacket) over it, and the 4 on the left have a brat (wool mantle). The men have their léinte rucked up to knee length and secured at the waist with a belt or cord. The léinte have the wide hanging sleeves that are typical of 16th c. Gaelic fashion. They also have a deep center-front opening, a feature which matches Burgundian courtier Laurent Vital's description of clothing he saw during his 1518 visit to Kinsale, Co. Cork:
"Generally the men, women, and young girls wear their shirts open to the waist. Most young women and girls have their chests naked to the waist." (translation taken from a lecture by Katherine Bond)
The ionair in this print are very similar in cut to the ionar of the Kilcommon bog outfit. The hat worn by the man in the red ionar is also similar to the hat of the Kilcommon outfit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The floral scroll design seen on some of the ionair was a popular embroidery motif in England during the 16th-early 17th centuries. It also shows up in 16th c. Irish art like St. Brigid's shoe shrine.
Tumblr media
4 of the ionair and all of the visible scabbards have fringe on them. Fringe was a popular embellishment in 16th c. Ireland. The use of fringe is mentioned in several 16th and early 17th c. descriptions of Irish clothing. Fringes made of wool and fringes made of silk were imported into Ireland during the 16th c.
In spite the claim that it was drawn from life, this print includes some stylistic exaggeration. The sword blades are depicted as having a bulbous tip, which actual Irish ring-pommel swords are not. Compare the swords in the print to this extant 16th c. sword from Tully Lough, Co. Roscommon in the NMI:
Tumblr media
The print is currently in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum. https://collections.ashmolean.org/object/737327
