Greet people you're familiar with when you see them. Even something as simple as giving a smile and a nod to your neighbor you pass every day while walking your dog or walking to the bus stop is generally more polite than just ignoring them.
This one certainly isn't do-able for everyone, but if you feel safe smiling at and greeting people, even people you don't know very well, you'd be surprised how much nicer life gets when you create a sense of warmth and community with the people around you instead of shutting yourself off.
So smile and say hi to your neighbor. Say hi to your co-worker who works in a different department and you only met one time at that staff party last year. Greet people and show them a little kindness and warmth instead of ignoring them and shutting them out.
This one is especially important post lock down. A lot of people feel more isolated and closed off from their community than they did before lock down. If you want a sense of community, and want to feel connected to the people around you, then take the first step by smiling at and greeting the people around you and familiar to you.

The 2025 Fan Crafts Bazaar is now open!
We don't allow physical fanworks in the main auction for a variety of reasons, so to accommodate these we started the FTH Fan Crafts Bazaar.
This year the Bazaar is a record size, with 28 crafters offering a wide variety of crafts in dozens of fandoms (and plenty who will create for any fandom you like).
Every crafter has set up their own stall with their own policies - some are offering custom-made creations while some are ready to ship; some are holding their own auctions while some items have a set price. So be sure to read the details carefully!
The Bazaar will stay open until March 10, so if you don't win the auctions you have your eye on in the main event, head back over there to find other places to direct your donations toward! (But some may be ending their auctions earlier than the 10th, while others may run out of ready-made stock before then, so check those details.)
We'll also continue to add stalls as they come in over the next couple of days, so be sure to check again in a few days to see what's been added - and if you're a crafter who hasn't had a chance to sign up, you still can!
Click here for the 2025 FTH Fan Crafts Bazaar!

Fandom Trumps Hate auctions are open for browsing! There are nearly 40 auctions by fan creators offering 911 OG and 911 Lone Star works for donations starting at $5. Donations can be made to a wide varieties of charities and non-profits with more details in the auction descriptsions.
Bidding opens on Tuesday, February 25th at 8am EST and closes on Saturday, March 1st at 8pm EST.
Go check out who is writing for the fandom (and hundreds of others!)
I have two auctions. If they do second chance offers this year (i.e., the creator can offer the first person who did not win the auction the chance to also have a work if they commit to their last offered donation!), I will be participating, and other creators may participate as well.
This is a 200%+ increase in offerings for 911-related works from last year's Fandom Trumps Hate.

Starting at 22:10 UTC (about 30 minutes from now), AO3 will be down for maintenance for an estimated 2 hours. Thank you for your patience!

The infamous Ford Pinto killed 27 people via fire during its 3.2 million unit run from 1971-1980. By contrast, Cybertruck has killed 5 people with fire in under 12 months.
That works out to 17x more Cybertruck deaths than the Pinto, per capita. If Tesla ever manages to sell 3 million Cybertrucks, that number scales up to 46K deaths by immolation.
Note that these statistics exclude all other forms of death & dismemberment Cybertruck is capable of delivering.

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
*Yes, this is a blog post, but it's a blog post filled with links to news articles. If you can click one link, you can click another.

Here’s a breakdown of all the $700 billion in infrastructure and climate spending we approved in two separate bills under Biden, searchable by zip code. Approximately $300 billion has been awarded, but Trump has frozen most of the rest.
1) those are bipartisan bills and he doesn’t have the right
2) this money is our future - it’s investment in our communities that we see in tangible benefits like jobs and improved quality of life day to day
What can you do? Learn what projects are local to you and then talk about them. Tell your friends and family. If they’re not funded yet, ask your congressperson when they will be. We, the people, are more powerful than Musk and Trump.

idk thinking about how sometimes you have to show up for people you aren't that close to, because sometimes you're just the person who's there. sometimes you invite a new friend to a party and end up having to sit with them through a panic attack. sometimes you run into an acquaintance on their worst day and they need to talk about what happened. sometimes someone is crying in a stairwell and you're the only one around to ask if they're okay. and none of this is "trauma dumping" or whatever the fuck it's just being there for people because you're the one in the room with them.
