More on Chagatai Khanate
I feel as if Chagatai Khanate is not talked about a lot by me. This is despite the fact that I pretty much have his whole characterisation and storyline planned from birth to death in my head and I have written about him before as a part of larger posts however I have not dedicated a single post to him.
I somewhat fashioned his personality off of the actual Chagatai. I also did something similar with Golden Horde and Jochi.
He really fits into the role of the ignored middle child well to be honest. Both character wise and how the actual Chagatai Khanate is perceived. From what I've seen over the years, when people reflect on the different Khanates of the Mongol Empire, they often think of the opulence of the Yuan Dynasty and Ilkhanate, or the infamous reputation of the Golden Horde in Europe, with the Chagatai Khanate often coming last and least in many peoples minds. Hell, a Khan of the Chagatai Khanate itself declared that it was a "miserabe little ulus", so its no wonder its not given as much attention.
I wrote this before in a much longer post about Mongolia's relationship with the different Khanates (Mongolia came to be the figurehead of the Yuan Dynasty) but I think Chagatai Khanate was born only one year after the Golden Horde (kind of wanted it to be poetic in the sense that this reflects the actual age gap between Jochi and Chagatai) so they're quite close in age. I think this only made him more competitive towards his eldest brother (Ilkhanate being the youngest). This is especially because Golden Horde felt outcasted to an extent as he was the representation of the Jochid territory and there was a lot of speculation about the nature of his birth - if Genghis Khan was actually his father or not. This casued a lot of tension between the actual Jochi and Chagatai, this is something Chagatai constantly berated him for. I think this is the same for Golden Horde and Chagatai Khanate. Not in the exact same way of course - no one was questioning whether he was Mongolia's child or not. However as he was the representative of Jochid lands - he was seen as illegitimate by proxy if that makes sense.
Out of the three brothers, I think Chagatai Khanate was the most similar personality wise to Mongolia. Don't get me wrong, all three of them inherited his traits, such as his stubbornness, competitiveness and intelligence. However if I was tasked with knee jerk picking the one son who just is the most like Mongolia personality wise overall, it has to be Chagatai Khanate.
This is one of the major reasons as to why Chagatai Khanate wanted to be the favoured son. Golden Horde was technically his first born, however he represents the Kingdom of a bastard. He considered Ilkhanate a weakling who was not strong willed like he was and just bent over to whatever Mongolia said (unfortunately for Chagatai Khanate, thats exactly why Ilkhanate was Mongolia's favourite). He thought Mongolia would prefer a more hard headed son - like him.
Considering this reasoning, Chagatai Khanate was expecting... More? From his father. More approving pats on his shoulder when he did something right, more proud smiles when he stood his ground. Sure Mongolia gave them all attention but it was never enough. He was always busy with something else or late for something.
For the longest time, Chagatai defended his father a personal level and was extremely uptight about upholding tradition and rules. Out of his brothers, he was the one who was so anal about upkeeping proud Mongol tradition. Not that he was not a troublemaker in his own right - he most definitely was, however he was very conservative when it came to this. He could pretty much recite the entire Yassa code off by heart. Hence another reason why he thought he should be the favoured son.
Before Chagatai Khanate came to resent his father, he saw his meticulousness of upholding Mongol law and tradition as an extension of his love and respect for his father. But as time went on and there were more developments in the empire (as in, infighting between the divisions), Chagatai Khanate no longer saw it as an extension of his love for his father but as a competition. He was already given the short end of the stick when it came to the wealth of his Ulus ("miserable little ulus") which he was most definitely a sore loser about and not only that, Mongolia went on to establish the Yuan Dynasty under Khublai Khan - a dynasty that ruled over China, posed itself as being a legitimate dynasty with the mandate of heaven, Khublai himself was very fond of China and there were whole wars fought between Khublai and Qaidu - the de facto ruler of the Chagatai Khanate, as Qaidu was more traditionalist compared to the more liberal Khublai. It's speculated that one of the discussions that took place during the 1269 Talas Quriltai was about Khublai straying away from Mongol tradition and turning to China! I explained this in more depth in a previous post I'll link here, it's a lot more historically dense but it's worth a read if you want more context.
Even before the different Khanates went their separate ways, I think Chagatai Khanates resentment began to blossom. I think he realised that no matter how hard he tried, Mongolia would never consider him his favoured son. So he got strangely competitive with Mongolia in more subtle ways before everything blew up. Who could inspire more fear in the lesser staff, who was the better wrestler. Mongolia caught onto this and was... Not impressed. He was quite annoyed at this. I don't think he felt threatened but I do think it's funny how the son most similar to him personality wise annoyed him the most. Admitting that you're obnoxious, Mongolia? (At least in the context of this era).
Mongolia definitely had his own thoughts on Khublai and absolutely raised an eyebrow at a few things he did (like moving the Mongol Empire capital to China) however he was not expecting his children (except for Ilkhanate who pretty much always sided with him) to turn against him in such a way - and to accuse him of all people of disrespecting Mongol tradition! Yes, he was pissed. Especially at Chagatai Khanate who he saw as the instigator of it all. Despite this conflict ending, Chagatai Khanate was still very sore about it and continued being a pain to his family. What's funny is how much Chagatai Khanate and Golden Horde hated each other, but one of the only things that could unite them was when they wanted to bully and threaten Ilkhanate. lol. And I guess their shared frustration when Mongolia inevitably sided with Ilkhanate in the conflict - Mongolia/the Yuan Dynasty being one of Ilkhanates only allies (daddy's boy I guess)..
This staunch adherence to tradition did not stop though. Whilst the other Khanates became more sedentary, the Chagatai Khanate was still living traditionally (ironic as this was a factor in halting the growth of wealth in the Chagatai Khanate, something he complained about) and when the Chagatai Khanate broke up into two, the West in Transoxiana and the East called Moghulistan (Chagatai Khanate became the Eastern Moghulistan) , Moghulistan was a hell of a lot more traditional than the Western Chagatai Khanate. They upheld Chagataid tradition whereas the Western Chagatai Khanate used Chagataids as puppet rulers usually. They were even discriminatory towards the Western halfs more mixed status, and the Western half similarly looked down on Moghulistan for being "uncultured" from what I recall. Yes I do think he was hatecriming his son-
Anyways it's ironic because Moghulistan itself became increasingly Turkified over time and even adopted Sharia law over the traditional Mongola Yassa. He's my fave jock loser
Some other hcs:
Ruddy face
He and GH are similar in stature but he is slightly bigger
Bushy eyebrows
Small scar on his cheek

I feel so weird when they write any hetalia character who "solves problems of Ukraine" - first of all, no one ever solved our problems, they only promise but in the end it's always us alone (c). Especially when it comes to big states like old Poland, old Sweden, old Turkey - they always fought with each other for our land.
Second of all, Ukraine NEVER asks anyone to solve her problems - it's quite an imperialistic narrative - she can ask about some concrete items to solve it, tho.
#Ukraine also doesn't mind mutual help like we had with GDL. they help us to fight Golden Horde - we helped them to fight in Grunwald.#pls avoid portraying characters as mother Teresa to Ukraine#hetalia#hws ukraine#aph ukraine

aph kazakhstan hcs
kazakhstan!!! my starboy
- kazakhstan is the baby of the gang 👶 he looks like he's in his early 20s, a charming young man! he and his older sister uzbekistan were initially together under the uzbek khanate before breaking off and forming the kazakh khanate. to some extent, uzbekistan's still salty about it to this day...
- he may be the baby but he's the breadwinner of the family!! he has the highest gdp among all of central asia, and his other siblings are floored whenever they visit astana and almaty. he's a hustler!
- he tries to get his siblings to be cooperative and stop fighting all the time(specifically uzbekistan tajikistan and kyrgyzstan) through ~regional unity.~ the results? there certainly were some...
- kyrgyzstan and uzbekistan dote on him a lot while also being jealous of his massive economic gains lol
- kazakhstan is asexual. I see him immensely valuing his small group of friends and family, but I don't see him pursuing any relationships in an intimate manner. he may still have fleeting crushes from time to time, and so may be alloromantic to some extent.
- he gets along well with kyrgyzstan, his older brother, in terms of language! they both belong to the qipchak language family, and having both been nomadic for longer have restored a lot of nomadic tradition than the couch potato over there(uzbekistan).
- the qipchak languages have less persian influence than qarluk, so this means kazakhstan and kyrgyzstan(as well as karakalpakstan) don't have many issues speaking in their language towards turkey. they both know turkish fluently anyway.
- when they speak to tajikistan they revert to russian or have uzbekistan translate.
- he's also very close with uzbekistan, as mentioned before with them both being under the same roof once. kazakhs are quick to support uzbeks in times of need or celebration, like diyora keldiyorova's gold medal winning in judo(the first uzbek woman to win in judo)! kazakhstan admires how hard working, mannered and thoughtful she is towards the people she loves and cares about, and even towards strangers as well! he also loves her cooking, and in the meantime uzbeks admire how outspoken kazakhs are, and how quick they are to fight against injustice. uzbekistan wishes she could be as outspoken as her brothers too, to forcefully enact change instead of waiting in fear...
- also she loves her lil bro's chocolate and candy!! bayan sulu my beloved...
- @ any kazakhs who see this...I KNOW there was a chocolate with lemon filling I just don't remember the brand name...PLEASE DM me if you know 😭😭
- uzbekistan also has the 2nd biggest gdp of central asia. the 2 hustle together to be the faces of central asia!
- whenever he tries taking her out to skate she clings onto him for dear life while screaming. he tries taking her on hikes too because "the mountain air is good for your health" but she INSISTS a lady shouldn't exert herself too much...once you become sedentary it's over for you ig 💀
- mongolia is closest to kazakhstan out of all the central asians! they're neighbors, and in bayan ulgii, there's a sizeable community of kazakhs that have lived there since fleeing the russian occupation. they've kept all their traditions intact, and kazakhstan pays them a visit from time to time! he's grateful to mongolia for letting them seek refuge and keep their culture intact after all these years.
- kazakhstan was a successor to the golden horde, and a lot of kazakhs can trace their ancestry to then! hence, mongolia is something like.. a grandpa...?
- mongolia takes the time to tease kazakhstan like "hey isn't it past your bedtime little man?" just to see kazakhstan go all red in the face. mongolia also checks on him from time to time to see if he's doing alright. it's kind of sweet tbh 🥺
- this one time in a horseback archery competition france came in FIRST??? while mongolia and kazakhstan came in 2nd and 3rd. they probably sobbed abt it and drank together 😭
- now all the central asians use some russian words when speaking, but kazakhstan does this the most. he's trying(successfully) to phase russian out when he could use a kazakh word in place of it.
- kazakhstan has kept the tradition of falcon taming and hunting! he handles falcons really well, and will sometimes be on the tv as he walks the audience through handling a falcon. kazakhstan also rides horses the best! there's a lot of mountainous regions an hour or two's drive away from almaty where you can ride horses and admire the freshwater streams and the vibrant green grass...what a dream..
- kyrgyzstan and kazakhstan were also one of the founding members of the turkic union! for the first few years it must have been hard to listen to turkey yap about turan...
- kazakhstan is also the coldest central asian country. the weather can hit as low -30 to -35 degrees! before washing machines, he'd hang his laundry outside and check on them the next morning to try and fit a stiff scarf through the doorway. when roads freeze over, he pulls out his skates and simply skates to work. he'd open his door in the morning after a snowy night only for the snow to have taken the shape of the door.
- uzbekistan may be the best cook as declared by her siblings, but kazakhstan is a close second and this is because of his beshbarmaq and baursak. it is such a banger and hits EVERY TIME. uzbekistan loves his cooking ❤️
- also makes a mean kazy! bro is NOT lazy with it. he doesn't buy from the store! not when he could make his own.
- he also makes qurut as well. qurut is like dried yogurt in the shape of a ball, and you suck on it because mm salty. thing is, uzbekistan's qurut is much harder and therefore takes a longer time to go through compared to kazakhstan's! his is softer and more creamy, less salty, and it gets my vote <3
- he loves playing hockey, skating, riding horses, hiking in his mountainous ranges...he's very active! he also likes going to concerts and raves, and coming home late lol
- his interest in space was kickstarted by uzbekistan, who took him to see ulughbek's observatory. then years later a major space operations hub was placed in baikonur during the ussr period, and since then he's developed his own space program and he loves keeping up to date with space related news! just say the word and he'll explain it to you!
- due to constantly being tormented by russia, and for a while having to bend to his needs(a long while...) he does have unhealthy coping mechanisms. he picked up drinking and smoking during the ussr and still does it, though his siblings are trying to get him to cut down on it.
- he, like all the central asians, absolutely DESPISES russia. he can just conceal his feelings better than his siblings when he makes economic deals. this was especially so in the early aughts to 2010s as he insisted it was "all for my economy's sake..."
- when he's working on something late at night, he likes going to CU to grab a bite to eat! korea's been to his CU a few times when he's showed her around and she noticed how there were some products that weren't in korea themselves! CU regularly sells binggrae vanilla flavored milk, though in korea it's not on the shelves at all!
- this one time in 2022 the power shut off in uzbekistan kazakhstan and kyrgyzstan, and all the governments blamed each other lol. talk about the spiderman meme
- also in my opinion...kazakhstan has the best drip lol. both in terms of tradition and modern fits I see people wear in the streets of astana
#hetalia#aph kazakhstan#hws kazakhstan#tokki writes#kazakhstan!! i love you!!#i should draw him also...#a lot of these hcs were based after my uzbek-kazakh mom and her family!!#most of these were uzbkazkyrgyz relationship hcs because kazakhstan has stronger bonds with them over tajik and turkmen..😭

Tbh I don’t have that much faith in people lmao. People will come up with the most retarded reasoning and think it suffices as justification (it’s not).
I’ll then comment on what I think is THE primary reason why Russia is not a successor of Mongol Empire, of Golden Horde, or one of the post-Mongol states or anything:
There was never a Borjigin Khan that ruled from the seat of Grand Prince during principalities era right into empire, even in Moscow.
This one is big. Why? Chinggis Khan specifically made it that only his direct descendants could rule in Mongol Empire. This political system was brought over to the successor states and everyone took this Very Seriously as if you were not rly a valid entity to count if you weren’t founded by a Borjigin. Only Borjigins could be Khan ofc. If you aren’t, you would only be an Amir, but unless you’re Timur (Timurid Empire) ppl might think your state is only a joke.
(Timurid Empire certainly deserves its own recognition and not just as a state that wanted to be Mongol Empire 2.0. I think this is pretty oversimplifying of Timur’s smart and ambitions)
Anyway. Yeah, Russia/Moscow etc (as it wasn’t just Moscow who had to bow down to Golden Horde) were hella conscious of this political system as ones who were in the sphere of influence as subordinates. Weird for other people to call Moscow/Russia a successor state of Golden Horde when Moscow itself wouldn’t think itself that, for the very simple fact that it never had a Borjigin Khan. Not to mention an array of other reasons.
Anyway, from Ozbeg Khan onwards all Khans from Golden Horde had to be Muslim and the state became formally Muslim. Now there are more reasons why Russia/Moscow isn’t a successor of Golden Horde… it was orthodox and it was never ruled by a Borjigin Khan.
Aside from that, things that certainly don’t make Russia a successor of Golden Horde:
- That Grand Princes had to receive jarligs from Mongol Khans
- That Moscow Prince married Ozbeg Khan’s sister (who converted to orthodox faith even) in an alliance
- That Moscow Princes and other Princes had to pay tribute to the Khan
- That Moscow had to use the Mongol trade routes
- That Russians at that time were in Mongol military as well
- Etc
This just meant Golden Horde had Russia hooked by the neck, not that Russia was directly part of Golden Horde.
And this is stereotypical maybe? But true: the nomads hated Russian swamps and forests lol where Russians lived were unlivable by steppe nomadic standards. The main reason why Golden Horde never took in directly Russian principalities is bc they couldn’t make the lands into pastures.
Hiya, as a Russian and an actual historian yourself, perhaps it would be a good idea to make a post on Russian history primer, just to disperse some gross misunderstanding of Russian history including why it’s wrong to call Russia ‘a successor state of Mongol Empire’ for ex? I KEEP thinking it might be because most Russians are chill abt these depictions in fandom that foreigners just keep using these disastrously misleading depictions. To the point where I think ‘oh it would be nice if Russians would speak up themselves’.
Ofc this is wholly up to you tho!!
You know, I could write a long comment with explanation, why Russia can't be called the successor state of Mongol Empire: the short answer is that there's no evidence that Russia adopted any institutions from Mongol empire or from Golden Horde and that there's no evidence of the fact that the (in)famous russian autocracy and vertical of power trace roots back to the administrative structure of the Golden Horde, which was nomadic clan state and was constantly plunged in internal strife because of its succession system. But, first of all, i have too little time and, secondly, I have a better idea: why don't anyone who holds the view that Russia was a sucessor of Mongol empire comes and gives us some justification?) Because I have never seen anything convincing.)

I actually have more questions.
What is Mongolia's human name?
And what was his first experience with a European like?
I call him Baatar Batbayar because I think it's cute haha.
And uh. Well. LMAO it wasn't exactly the friendliest to put that way.
When the Mongols travelled Westward, they didn't even really know where they were heading. Historian Morris Rossabi noted that the Mongols' entry into Europe wasn't a deliberate invasion; they lacked precise knowledge of their destination.
Europeans had limited awareness of the Mongols until their arrival, and it wasn't exactly a welcome one.
There's a pretty famous, pretty gruesome story relating to the battle of Kalka River (located in Modern Ukraine)
After the Mongol invasion in Central Asia and the fall of the Khwarezmian Empire, Jebe and Subutai led a force into Iraq-i Ajam. They asked Chinggis Khan for permission to keep conquering for a few years before rejoining the main army. While waiting for Chinggis' reply, they raided the Kingdom of Georgia.
Their plan was approved, and they passed through the Caucasus, defeating Caucasian tribes and the Cumans. The Cuman Khan sought help from Prince Mstislav the Bold of Halych, who formed an alliance with Rus' princes, including Mstislav III of Kiev, against the Mongols.
The battle was the Mongols against the allied forces of the Principality of Kiev, the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia, the Principality of Chernigov, the Principality of Smolensk and the Cumans (I'll call them the alliance for brevity.)
What happened (extremely brief)
At the battle of the Kalka River, the Mongol forces employed strategic withdrawal to lure the alliance into a dispersed pursuit.
When the Mongols made their stand, they positioned skilled archers on horseback at the front.
The alliance , misjudging the Mongols' retreat as disarray, charged prematurely, leading to chaos in their ranks.
Mongol archers on horseback skillfully disrupted the advance with precise arrow fire.
Mongol heavy cavalry, well-armed and equipped, crushed the isolated vanguard.
The combined Mongol forces, including mounted archers, routed the remaining troops, resulting in significant casualties and the capture of Mstislav the Daring
Here's the gruesome part
Jebe and Subutai ordered the suffocation of Mstislav the Daring and two other princes beneath boards during a victory celebration. They essentially sat on top of the boards celebrating as the princes suffocated to death
This is actually in Mongol custom - no, not necessarily crushing people to death while you party on top of them. But it was forbidden to spill royal blood, so when Mongols would kill royalty, they'd go for bloodless deaths.
So. Definitely not the friendliest introduction to Europeans haha! He definitely built a pretty bad reputation throughout Europe, especially after this stunt. Not that he particularly cared, in fact he probably actually enjoyed inciting fear in people.
Being feared meant people would surrender more often and more easily so it's less of a hassle if they do so rather than conducting a full-scale invasion.
He certainly would have had contact with some of the Europeans conquered under him or at least was aware of them. Lots of hate filled letters sent to him or sent to golden horde that he then read (he's nosy) from the likes of Hungary and Poland for example and on the special occasions he'd meet them himself (I think Golden Horde/Jochi ulus would be dealing with them a lot of the time) there was a lot of gritted teeth and that eras equivalent of middle fingers being launched at him from behind his back, hah!
Some more lovely interactions with Europe:
In 1236, they beat the Bulghars, and in 1237, they crossed the frozen Volga River with a massive army, causing destruction in what is now modern Russia. They destroyed cities like Moscow and Vladimir by 1238.
Then, they rested in the Don steppe while gathering more information about Europe.
After taking Kiev and Chernigov in Ukraine, the Mongols took a break to regroup and get more soldiers. In Europe, rumours of the "Devil's Horsemen" and a "Storm from the East" started spreading.
In Poland, the Mongols lured Polish troops into a trap near Kraków and plundered the city
On Palm Sunday.
Mongolia was definitely hated but it's not like that was anything new. His first experience is... Hard to say exactly but I can imagine again, receiving angry letters at first as he would accompany Chinggis and after Chinggis, whoever was the great Khan/overlord essentially and would aid in the great Khan's conquests so wasn't always present during those invasions in Europe.
First experience with a European nation was most likely during a visit to check in on how things were going and I'd put a finger on Poland potentially being one of the first Euro nations Mongolia met face to face during a visit (probably came after Krakow was razed to see uh what happened himself but ofc there were also previous visits Mongolia made to see the progress or to pretend to be a good father for a few days) and he probably tried to spit at him or something considering 🗿
I don't think Mongolia thought much of the appearance of the Europeans or was particularly perplexed by it, maybe a little curious but he just cared really if they complied and and how much progress was being made lol. He probably found the hate mail from those nations and small acts of defiance (like being spat at) somewhat amusing too but did make sorta try to make sure that it wasn't too much for golden horde or smth (woaw being a normal father for once 😍)
Ik I made him sound like an asshole and he was but in a boyboss way 👆
Btw I think Poland and Mongolia actually get along now LMAOO

Wahh thank you so much for drawing them 🥺💖
Some blurbs :3
Golden Horde:1242 - 1502. Other names: Jochid ulus, Ulus of Jochi, Kipchak Khanate, the Great Horde.
Originally promised to Genghis Khan's eldest son Jochi, however he died before his father did, and so the Western stretches of the Mongol Empire were given to Batu Khan and Orda Khan to rule in two wings - with Batu Khan being recognised as the superior ruler of the entire horde and ruling the Western wing, his brother Orda his subordinate ruling the Eastern Wing. At its greatest it ruled over parts of Siberia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. First sultanate of the Mongol Empire and yes he's elitist about it. (Unfortunately) aided in the beginnings of a future Russian statehood. Adapted practices from Uyghurs, Chinese and various Turkic groups that lived around the Volga and Caspian areas. Mongolia's eldest son. He's somewhat the black sheep of the family, similar to Jochi himself. Aloof, detached and a serial grudge holder. Though it's rare for him to raise his voice. Never got along with his brothers - especially Chagatai Khanate. If goth was a thing back then he'd be all over it. Poetry enjoyer, painfully pretentious.
Chagatai Khanate: 1227 (From when Chagatai Khan inherited part of the Empire) -1347 (the end of a unified Chagatai Khanate).
Mid 14th century - 1660s as Moghulistan, or the Eastern Chagatai Khanate
Given to Genghis Khan's second hotheaded son Chagatai. The area of the Empire that resided in Central Asia - the Chagatai Khanate is said to be the one to remain steadfast in upholding the traditional nomadic lifestyle. Really his only neighbours were his family, and with an expansionist foreign policy you can bet he was a thorn in the side to them all. Known for the famous city of Samarkand, its administrative capital. Loud, sporty, stubborn and hotheaded (wow I wonder where he got that from). He took every opportunity to bully Golden Horde and also Ilkhanate. In fact the only thing that could unite Golden Horde and Chagatai Khanate was their hatred of their youngest brother. The Chagatai Khanate was the least wealthy in his family, with Baraq Khan of the Chagatai Khanate even allegedly complaining that it was a "miserable little ulus" compared to the wealth of the Yuan dynasty (Mongolia), Ilkhanate and Golden Horde. Typical ignored middle child. Superiority complex over sticking to tradition that he even projected onto the Western Chagatai Khanate once he got split but it was probably cope.
Ilkhanate: 1256-1335
Ruled what is now Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Armenia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. At its greatest this even included parts of Syria, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Dagestan and Tajikistan. Said to have been based off of the original invasions of the Khwarezmian Empire from 1219-1224. The Ilkhanate was established in 1256 by Hulagu Khan, son of Tolui Khan, Genghis Khan's youngest son. It's said that "Ilkhanate" meant "Subordinate Khanate" or could have been derived from the Mongol term for "victory", signifying Mongol victory over the Abbasid Caliphate and the sacking of Baghdad (yes, this is when the infamous burning of the House of Wisdom happened which is ironic considering Ilkhanate was the nerdiest out of the three brothers). The Ilkhanate was one of the wealthiest of the family - in fact at one point he was richer than Mongolia himself. Very artistic and studious, the Ilkhanate fostered a flourishing and influential artistic culture following the conversion to Islam under Mahmud Ghazan Khan in the late 13th century. Another fact, Hulagu Khan commissioned an observatory to be built after the establishment of the Ilkhanate. So he was a nerd through and through. Mongolia's youngest and favourite son (youngest sons in Mongol culture were called "otchigen" meaning "prince of the hearth" and was expected to take care of his parents so was it any surprise...), he was pathetic and needy in his own ways. Hated by both of his brothers, but it was okay as daddy was always there for him. In fact the Yuan Dynasty was the Ilkhanate's only ally. Didn't matter much though as internal conflicts and the black death absolutely ravaged him and he died first out of all his brothers.
And yes they all converted to Islam. Mongolia why don't you join them-
