Jilypad Week Day 3

Saw one of today's @jilypadweek prompts floating around, and thought I'd give it a try! I'm cheating a little bit because I didn't participate last year, but this one really grabbed me, so I wanted to write out some thoughts anyway:

Last Year Participant: Other Fandom’s ships that make you think of Jilypad?

I find this question really tricky and intriguing, because it made me realize that I actually think the Jilypad dynamic is pretty unique! I don't usually associate James/Lily/Sirius with any other ships.

So I spent awhile trying (1) to figure out why that is and (2) to articulate the Jilypad dynamic in a way that could help me think of comparable ships from other stories.

The (subjective!) conclusion that I came to was that a solid Jilypad analogue needs:

To be part of a story that meaningfully centers a close BFF or sibling relationship.

In which that relationship Definitely Has Some Chemistry.

But at the same time, one of the characters (probably not both, unless it's the same love interest) also has an ironclad canon pairing.

I actually think that having all of these things together is a little uncommon! And listing them out helped me think of some comparisons that I find pretty cute :) Strong Contenders:

Arthur/Gwen/Merlin from The Adventures of Merlin TV series — I think this one is quite good and I'm actually shocked I didn't think of it immediately!

I loved another post's suggestion of Eliza/Hamilton/Angelica from Hamilton. In a similar vein, perhaps Elphaba/Fiyero/Galinda from Wicked? (Timely!)

Same energy: Lila/Nino/Lenu from Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Quartet? (If Nino is too obnoxious for this comparison to work, maybe we can substitute Enzo lol).

Sticking with novels, has anybody read Robin McKinley's Spindle's End? Because Rosie/Narl/Peony might be perfect!

A Bit Of A Stretch But Still Fun:

For Your Consideration: Joe Harper/Becky Thatcher/Tom Sawyer? Bonus points awarded for Sid Sawyer's hella Regulus energy. (Bonus points immediately retracted again due to the Hogwarts student body's total lack of Huckleberry Finns).

Perhaps Resa/Mo/Dustfinger from Cornelia Funke's Inkheart? This might work if and only if (1) Resa stands in for James (otherwise it's just a standard love triangle) and (2) we kinda ignore the other two books in the series. Bonus points for Meggie as Harry!

There’s not much known about where exactly Tabitha King came from. Her birth certificate was from a local Milwaukee hospital, but whether or not they stayed there long enough to consider that home, Tabby didn't count on it. The only core memories she has comes to mind is of a beautiful blonde looking at her in the rearview mirror of a beat up car. Singing Fleetwood Mac with her dangling earrings and the smell of roses. A warm smile and eyes that sparkled. Staying up late watching black and white movies in motels. The good times. These were the memories of her mother that she likes to think about the most.

But that wasn't the whole picture. It was leaving place after place once the men Angelica was dating grew bored with her constant drama. Her highs and lows. It was days of her mother not being able to get out of bed because she was in one of her 'moods'. It was the times that her mother said she was going out, and not coming back for weeks at a time. Angelica was here one moment and gone the next. A rare comet from a distance. A destructive force upon contact. The periods of times that her mother would leave, galavanting off with her new beau and leaving her daughter behind, became longer and longer. Eventually, CPS caught wind of the eight-year-old who showed up to school wearing dirty clothes, unbrushed hair and severely underfed, Tabby got put into the system.

It took them a whole year to find her mother, but Tabitha was always waiting for her. Even when they said Angelica wasn't coming and that she'd have to go to Aurora Bay, California and live with her grandparents, she still waited. Waited for her mother to come home, to choose her, to make her feel special. It never happened. Tabitha was withdrawn as a kid, always waiting for the other shoe to drop. It made her fiercely independent. Her grandparents were lovely people, but they knew their daughter - she was never coming back.

As time moved on, Tabby eventually came out of her shell and what emerged was an angry little girl. At school, she was too smart and too mouthy. Constantly in detention for talking back to teachers while getting straight A's on their tests. Any rule was broken, forever acting out as if the school would call her mother and she'd have to come and get her. All it did was give her grandparents grief. She loved them, but the trauma from her childhood was too deep in her veins. Her only saving grace were her friends, the people who made school tolerable. Her best friend, Lucky - he was the grounding force she needed. She would have loved him if she were able to, but after everything that happened with her mother, Tabitha had learned never to love anyone too much. It'll only destroy you when they inevitably leave.

Comforting him during the rough patches with his family came easy to her, and they only grew closer during those times until one night, it blossomed into something more. One night was all it took to completely flip her world upside down. She fully supported his sudden move to London after his parents divorce, she longed to go with him but two pink lines kept her planted in Aurora Bay. Tabitha thought about telling him. When they spoke on the phone, he was always so excited, telling stories about adventures. Tabitha knew that if she told him, he'd come home and it seemed so cruel to crush his dreams like that. There were thoughts of other options, but this was a piece of Lucky and she'd never get rid of that. So she lied, to everyone. Said the baby was someone else's and decided to raise their daughter on her own.

It was tough being a mother at 18. She was still just a child herself, but her grandparents were a great support. Theodora King was born and Tabitha's whole life changed. There were no more talks of college. Only doctors appointments, midnight feedings and the cost of diapers. Eventually, once Theo was a little older, she got a job as a waitress at the All-Nighter Diner as they could watch her daughter overnight. There wasn't much time for things like a social life or friends, and eventually Lucky drifted into the background of her new life.

Just as Theo turned three, her grandmother started experiencing signs of Alzheimer's. Forgetting things, getting easily confused. Things got so bad that Tabitha started worrying that it was no longer safe to have her watch Theo unsupervised, and her grandfather needed to look after his wife. The two moved out into an apartment in Ocean Crest. It was small, but it was theirs and Tabitha tried her best to make sure that Theo never wanted for anything. But times were tough, she had no support. And then on Theo's fourth birthday, she cracked. Bills were piling up, her presents were mediocre and all Theo wished for.. was a dad. While they'd talked on and off over the years, Tabitha bit the bullet and called Lucky. Just as she expected, he came straight home.

From there, after many long conversations, they've been figuring out co-parenting as they go. Tabitha has taken extra part-time work for the days she's not waitressing to make sure that all Theo's needs are taken care of, the weight of impending doom lifted with Lucky's support. She still struggles asking for help, but getting there in time. Theo believes that wishes do come true as she really did get her dad for her fourth birthday.

tabitha has been living in aurora bay for the last 14 years after her grandparents took her in from foster care. before that, she was moving from home to home in chicago. ( possible connections: childhood friends, cousins, foster kids from chicago )

her mom was undiagnosed bipolar and would go maniac epsiodes where she would leave tabitha alone for long periods of time. they would move from place to place so she could have picked up a few friends when she was younger. her mom used to enchant men so they had a place to stay, she'd date them for a while but then her moods were get erratic and she'd do things like steal, break their shit or one time, she nearly burnt someone's house down. ( possible connections: men her mom dated, kids of the men her mom dated, someone who encourages this chick to go to therapy )

known around town as a bit of a hard-ass in her youth. she used to talk back to teachers and get detention for being in fights, angry little girl. would have had a small-tight knit group of friends that she cared about but pretended to be indifferent towards them ( possible connections: best friends, friends who lost touch after she got pregnant, kids she got into fights with )

has been working at the all nighter diner for the past fours years since the birth of her daughter, has recently started cleaning houses on the side for extra cash. very unenthusiastic worker but does what she has to so she's not fired ( possible connections: cleaning clients, regulars at the diner, co-workers )

got pregnant just before her 18th birthday after a one night stand with her best friend, lucky. didn't tell anyone that it was his so he wouldn't find out. eventually told him and he came home to help out. currently successfully co-parenting. ( possible connections: lucky's family and friends, godparents, people who helped while she was raising theo )

hasn't been on a date in like five years, at least not successfully. she's a single mom who worked two jobs (reba coded) so there's not much time for things like romance. but since lucky is back and helping out, she might explore more of the online dating space ( possible connections: bad blinde dates, unsuccessful hookups, unrequited crushes )

her non-mom related hobbies include: reading comics, ice-skating (she's actually pretty good) and going to the movies or drive-in, she's a cinemaphile when she has two hours to spare. you can usually find her around town at the movie house, comic emporium, sharky's on the odd occasion. ( possible connections: friends with owners/workers, fellow regulars, random run-ins, one night stands )

before moving to ocean crest apartments, tabitha and theo used to live with her grandparents where she was raised after leaving foster care. unfortunately her grandmother has been suffering with alzheimer's and has been steadily declining so they moved out. on occasion, tabitha takes her grandmother to the hospital for appointments to help her grandfather. ( possible connections: doctors, nurses, people randomly met at the hospital, ocean crest neighbors )

theo is just about to start school in september as she's now five years old. she'll be attending aurora bay elementary, but previously she would have been in daycare at kid’s cottage daycare center on random days that tabitha's grandparents were not available. constantine is often inspired by the beauty in the world, and by the human potential for kindness. he doesn't always see a lot of it, but when he does, it moves him to passion. anything in life is worth enduring to see one more sunset, to hold one more hand, to hear the laugh of someone you love. he's face-to-face with pure fucking evil so often that even the smallest acts of simple decency will leave him fawning over humanity's potential for hours. show him a kind word, and he'll remember you. show someone else a kind hand, and he'll battle the devil so you'll have the chance to do it again, and again, and again.

in terms of motivation, we find ourselves on the other side of the coin: constantine is driven a lot by the amount of petty, cruel injustice in the world. living in the 80s under margaret thatcher was not a good time to be anything other than british-born straight white upper-class, and he witnessed a lot of his friends and people from all walks of life (and himself, though he'd brush you off if it was pointed out to him) get screwed, by the government and by people they thought were their friends and neighbors, because of nothing more than the color of their skin, their sexuality, their class. more than that, in the forty years following, he's never seen it end — only seen it change shape.

it makes him angry and it makes him righteous, and it pushes him to fight harder to protect the people who can't protect themselves/for whom it's safer to take the hits and keep going. if it means sticking his neck out for a stranger who trusted the wrong people, or stepping in to save a fledgling magic-user who had no one to warn them about what they were getting into, or facing down the monsters that have more power and money than god with nothing more than the shirt on his back and the audacity, so be it.

angelica : where does your muse draw inspiration in life ? what motivates them ?

Spite was a huge motivator for Jayde for a long time because so many forced tried to kill and capture her, but that gradually became an incredibly fierce need to protect her family at all costs. Everything she does is to make sure they are safe and happy, that they can have a peaceful life even if they aren't human. She fights for them, lives for them, and would die for them.

basil : does your muse have a love - hate relationship with anyone or anything ?

Jayde has a very complicated relationship with the most powerful werewolf pack in the US, the Kincades. Her dad, Tristan, was best friend's with the "alpha male" (really Logan is just the trophy malewife) so their families were fairly close while she was growing up. They were like family that you absolutely loath going to visit during holidays, but you vibe with a couple of your cousins so it's semi-bearable. Miranda, the true head of the pack, is older and has very archaic values. One of her sons, Garret, is the same age as Jayde so Miranda had it in her head to push for an arranged marriage because they both come from "good breeding", but Jayde absolutely hates Garret and her parents were not keen on that idea at all either, even if the kids did like each other. but Jayde is - or has to - be grateful because the family took her little sister, Skye, in and kept her safe when the Thatchers were marked by hunters (although that led to even more problematic things because of Miranda's true motivations for accepting her). This is just scratching the surface of the history between these two families, so I won't go into a whole novel length breakdown, but yeah. It's complicated lmao.

magnolia : describe your muse’s relationship with nature & the natural world .

As a werewolf, Jayde is incredibly connected to nature as is, but she loves it more than most. Her absolutely favorite thing to do is go camping and the more remote the better! She likes to shift as often as possible and just really lets herself be free out there. It makes her feel better after a horrible day and really the only therapy she's willing to participate in. Sometimes Nadya has to go out and bring her back if she's been gone too long lol

pansy : does your muse often reflect on their own actions ? do they ever think a lot about the past , and what they could have done differently ?

Jayde gets stuck in the past very easily. She feels a lot of guilt and regret for many things and constantly runs through what she could have done differently. The main event that haunts her is the death of her father. The night the hunters caught up to her and her parents, Jayde wanted to be brave and really egged the lead hunter on until he laid hands on her. Her father was extremely protective (that's where she gets it) and lunged at the hunter with all the fury of an angry papa wolf. In the scuffle, the rest of the hunters panicked and killed him right in front of her... from then on Jayde heavily blamed herself. She hears "I should have kept my fucking mouth shut" in her head quite a lot. But she was only 16.

You wrote an article called Things Madtom Doesn’t Like About the Treatment of Eliza Hamilton. A very interesting piece, but I have a problem with it. There seemed to be a bitterness towards women who are well liked by male historians, because they were into "male" subjects. Politics and philosophy are dear to my heart, and while I absolutely get the point, the fact that women made progress in these things was HUGE then. They are truly important topics. Sorry if i'm not getting it, and thanks.

So I wrote that post 5 years ago, so I’m not going to swear that I remember exactly what I was feeling when I wrote it.

That being said, any bitterness was to the male historians with TENURE who get paid in MONEY and asked to speak at CONFERENCES, all while making unprofessional and inappropriate groundless assumptions about a historical woman’s inner life, intellectual potential, personality, level of attractiveness, skill set, ability, worth as a person, etc based on nothing but how a contemporary man acted towards her and whether or not they would personally tap that. Richard Beeman is a particularly bad offender, and I think that post was in response to one of his books. There is a difference between acknowledging the way men will sexualize a woman doing one or two “guy” things (like being into sports or liking action movies) while still being conventionally attractive, mistake said sexualization for some statement about her objective worth as a human being, and then use this to make grand statements about the worth of other women, and saying that it’s bad or wrong for women to be into “guy” things. The gender role assigned to women societally is inherently oppressive, and we should destroy it. Male historians, you may notice if you read a lot of secondary sources, do this thing where they will find a historical “cool girl” (Angelica Hamilton, Maria Cosway, and Cleopatra are frequent victims of this) who broke enough social rules to be cool, was into enough “guy” things to not be a boring lady, and was sexual/attractive (either noted for being so or commonly sexualized by her contemporaries), and will write inappropriately and unprofessionally about her. Usually they will compare women they find less stimulating negatively to her. This is sexist and it’s bad methodology. It is completely possible to celebrate the accomplishments of boundary pushing women without making gross and unsupported assumptions about the women around them! Laurel Thatcher Ulrich and Jill Lepore do this very well. 

Anyway, I’m sorry I didn’t phrase it better and gave you that impression. By no means would I ever want to discourage other women from an interest in politics, philosophy, or other traditionally gendered things (like STEM!). I was talking purely about the way men talk about women.

Weekend Warriors: Short Work Week

These short work weeks always leave me confused, although I certainly won’t complain about the extra day off. On Labor Day we biked with our boys along the Scioto River – it’s a great way to see the city from a new angle. (Did you know there’s an abandoned highway overpass downtown?! I want to go explore it.)

This morning I led a group of visiting bloggers on a breakfast tour for Experience Columbus. Again, I loved seeing the city from a new angle, discovering it through their eyes. Both of these events are a healthy reminder to keep being a tourist in our city, continuing to discover it anew. Fortunately for us, there’s always something more to see. We let the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com guide us to new adventures all the time.

For instance, we may check out Catherine Bell Smith’s latest exhibition Visible Evidence at the Shot Tower Gallery at Fort Hayes. Although we missed Gallery Hop, we’ll hopefully visit the Short North galleries like ROY G BIV’s exhibition of Franklin Cain-Borgers’ and Laura Thatcher’s work or Barb Vogel’s new show at Sherrie Gallerie. We had such a good time at Urban Scrawl a couple weekends ago that we’re itching to hit up Franklinton Fridays this Friday.

Both Short North Stage and Columbus Civic Theater open new shows this weekend: Tennessee Williams’ classic The Glass Menagerie for Short North and Athol Fugard’s Road to Mecca at Columbus Civic.

If we’re in the mood for good music, we may check out Opera Project Columbus’ performances of Suor Angelica this weekend, or go see Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons playing Rumba Cafe Saturday.

It might be a good weekend for music in the air, too! Jazz Arts Group starts up their concerts on the Harrison West Jazz Stage, beginning with Safety Squad on Sunday. The summer of concerts at Whetstone Park finishes up with the Clintonville Community Band.

We’re also in the final weeks of Franklin Park Conservatory’s exhibition Glasshouse: Photo Flora Form, featuring the work of CCAD students. Time to go check that out!
