From A Feather in the Forest

F- Fen barely had any time to draw his blade and block the incoming attack.

I- Inside the box Fen saw firecrackers, fountains, wheels, and rockets of all kinds.

G- Gale bowed long and low; an honor bestowed upon few outside of the Roost Lords.

H- He [Fen] woke late the next morning.

T- The group fell into a deep, contemplative silence.

B- Breaking camp was slower, and despite Fen saying he could carry a load, Quill, Rail, and Ivy had taken it upon themselves to haul most of the gear.

A- Already the air had a chill to it, and color could already be seen along the edges of the leaves.

T- The rocket launched with enough force to punch a hole in the ceiling of the armory, but not enough to escape.

T- The matter weighed heavily in his [Fen’s] mind.

L- Leif knew that neither of them would be dissuaded.

E- Eight days out and the party was approaching the edge of fox territory.

Leif Eriksson had no idea how he got himself into this mess. After making sure his best friend Harald Sigurdsson and the rest of the Falker’s crew arrived safe and sound in Constantinople, all he wished for was some peace. To sail back to Jomsborg and reunite with his sister Freydis, finally meet his nephew and then maybe go back to Greenland ?  He surely missed the place, but not many of his loved ones were there anymore. Nevertheless, none of his plans came true. Not long after leaving Constantinople, as he stopped by the nearest port to buy some supplies for his journey, he met a young boy who asked to join his crew, who only wanted to sail away from there and travel the world. Thinking he could really use some help aboard, the young viking took him in, only to find out just a couple of days later that said boy was in fact an asian princess who’d ran away from a loveless, arranged marriage. He would have preferred for her to tell him the truth right away, of course, but he understood her motivations, so the two continued their journey. 

A week had passed when they were surprised by a storm, but Leif’s ship, however small, was strong and would surely withstand it. The same couldn’t be said about a smaller boat sailing near his. Looking closer, Leif noticed there was only a young woman on board, doing her best to brave the storm, but he was sure the waves would crush her boat at any minute. “Hey !  You ! ” The viking shouted, trying to get her attention. “Your ship won’t make it, come with us.”

Maybe one of my favorite scenes. After Leif saves Tsubomi and Seihai from Rin, they talk about how Tenjin would never let anything happen to them. At least until Seihai tells him that Tenjin cares only about male heirs.

Minutes later, Tenjin arrives and this scene happens...

T-Let's go home.

But a sandy energy of chaos came at them, although it only surrounded Tenjin at the moment. Leiftan couldn't remember ever seeing Seihai gulp as hard as she did now, still unable to distinguish which energy was which. Tenjin, however, was not shaken.

He simply raised his head, facing Seihai. And what had once been hands and legs gradually became immense claws, as the cold seemed to crystallize some of that chaotic darkness expanding through Leiftan… After Lance's fusion with the crystal, apparently kitsunes were capable of putting up a fight against any of the three founding races now?

Fenghuangs were no challenge for them in overall terms and now that Tenjin was up against even a daemon, Lance would be a challenge. So why didn't the king settle the matter once and for all and find a way to neutralize Lance? Was he too busy choosing favorites among his children?

The kitsune baby's eyes glowed again amid the darkness of his fury. A father worth his salt protects his offspring equally!

-You won't leave this place...

No titles, no courtseys, just the voice of the last one of the race who could save or destroy that place with a snap of fingers. Even if Leiftan didn't actually have that power, staring at that pathetic excuse of a father was enough to grant him the strenght to do so.

It burned in his veins, it lingered the more he looked at Tenjin. The more he remembered the kitsune girl's face, the soul behind those little eyes that would grow up having that loser as father.

-Not until I show you what it means to condemn a child to be alone in the world!

This scene happens before the moment when Seihai's body is taken over by Coatlicue and Tenjin has his first jealous outburst precisely because of Leif's behavior. Leifather (L)

Leif and his siblings grew up listening to the stories about the forbidden forest located north of their settlement. It was said to be inhabited by unknown, powerful beings, magical creatures that were one with the forest, and who did not welcome strangers stepping into their domain — those who dared trying it, were never seen again. To appease these creatures and keep them at bay, sacrifices and offerings were made, left at the forest's entrance, and hunting there was strictly forbidden.

To Leif, a battle hardened and well travelled viking warrior who'd just returned home, these were nothing but stories parents told their children so they would behave. Having had contact with different cultures and learned their ways along his many voyages, Leif found it increasingly harder to believe such myths, preferring a more logical approach to things. So when a particularly hard winter affected their harvest, and there were almost no animals left to hunt in the south, the choice was between heading north or facing famine. Leif didn't even think twice when he volunteered himself to the task, ignoring his sister Freydis' warnings.

Armed with his hunting bow, arrows and axe, the viking entered the forbidden territory, looking out for animals to hunt and edible mushrooms, berries and roots he could forage. Suddenly, the soft movement of foliage caught his attention. Was it a deer? A boar? Already preparing his bow, Leif threaded carefully towards the noise, only to be taken down by the long, thick roots of a tree. Had these been here all along? He could have sworn the path was clear, but maybe he'd been so focused he had totally missed them. The fall caused the viking to heavily hit his head on a rock. "N-No..." It was all he could mumble, before his consciousness drifted away.

      There are not very many people that he would be willing to kill someone for-- despite being lauded as an amazing tactician, Saias actually detests war and taking people’s lives. This is mainly because, throughout his life, he has never really had the opportunity to grow close to most people, let alone care for them to an extent so extreme. If there was someone he could bring himself to kill someone for, it would be Julia, and only if it meant that it kept her from being killed or harmed in some serious way. Cohen comes in at a close second, however considering the fact that his grandfather kept Saias safe for so long, he assumes that Cohen is more than capable of protecting himself, should a situation turn dire.      Julia, on the other hand, is different.

     While he acknowledges the fact that she could easily hold her ground against someone, he feels obligated to keep her safe. She is-- during the events of fe4/5, and after them-- one of the only family members he has left, and therefore one of the most important people in his life. Since Saias aided in raising her alongside Julius, stepping in when duties meant Arvis or Deirdre could not be around, she quickly became dear to him-- someone he wanted to keep safe, even if it meant endangering himself. Reuniting with her after the war has ended only strengthened this, as he felt partially to blame for everything that happened to her.

      An honourable mention, but specific only to after the events of fe5, is any other remaining member of his family, as he considers himself responsible for both the survival and health of what remains of house Velthomer. It would have to be a really extreme situation, though.

      August. While he would never claim that every member of the clergy is without their own dark secrets or actions, there is something to be said about an individual who was excommunicated for his knowledge of torture. It really is not something Saias can overlook, despite recognising that he man’s heart is in the right place while aiding Leif, as there was no reason for him to have any knowledge of something that vile while serving the church. That being said, he is able to learn to like him as a person, as Saias does believe that people can change over time, and he finds little reason to doubt that August has done just that. Thus, during his time in Leif’s army, will grow to like August’s resourcefulness and devotion to the cause-- and maybe him as a person--, but will never really trust him fully.
