Neil Josten isn’t a superstitious person. The Wesninskis did not go to church together on Sundays. Neil knows that life is harsh and there is no big bearded man in the sky watching over him. If there was a god, he had forsaken Neil a long time ago. Every scar, every bullet hole, every burn on his skin is proof that they are alone on a big blue and green rock in space.

Andrew Minyard isn’t his answer. You can’t plug runaway times twenty two cities, divide by eye contacts and brown hair dye, subtract the mafia connections and come out with the answer “short blonde goalie” on a calculator. Andrew is brash and broken, closed off and callous. He is not afraid to be violent or cruel in the name of what he believes is his.

Andrew is not Neil’s answer, and Neil isn’t his.

And yet.

And yet, when Neil sits on the rooftop, fingertips singed with ash and legs cold against the concrete. When he feels a key weigh heavy in his pocket. When he leans just a little bit more onto the man next to him, knowing that he will hold up the weight. When Neil sees a shooting star rocket over Palmetto.

He makes a silent wish.
