debating if subtext is or isn't there misses the point

Non-romantic relationships that go beyond a typical friendship are queer. When we analyze art through a queer lens, reading queer subtext, straight people jump to say they "might just be friends".

And like yeah, maybe. But a when characters have a relationship that is a central part of their lives. When two characters are each other's "person". When they risk their lives for each other and take care of each other above all else. If that relationship is not a straight romance, it's kinda queer.

because heteronormative society tells us that the most important person in your life should be your straight romantic partner. Prioritizing a partnership that doesn't fit that mold is a nonconformist and radical thing to do.

you can read Aziriphale and Crowley as aromantic, their relationship is still a queer love story.

you can read Vincent and Eugene from Gattaca as "just friends", that doesn't change the fact that they're life partners.

even if you don't see the gay subtext in media, there's something inherently queer about nonconforming relationships of all kinds.
