It's February 2nd...that means it's Groundhog Day!

I didn’t even realize it today! I know it’s always Feb 2nd and I knew it was Feb 2nd, but it didn’t click until someone posted Happy Groundhog Day on a team chat at the same time I was looking at Yahoo. Oh wow! What did Phil see? Who’s Phil you ask? Why, only Punxatawny Phil, the groundhog who…if he sees his shadow means we will have six more weeks of Winter, but…if he doesn’t see a shadow, we…

There’s one tiny detail about the Groundhog Day musical they changed from the movie that I really like, and it’s in the line Rita sings in “If I had my Time Again”. She sings she’d learn piano as one of the things she’d with endless time, and this implies that this, along with the other things she’d do, is part of what sets Phil on his journey of self betterment and humility. In the movie, Rita says that her dream guy would play an instrument - this section is also done in the movie, but the scene above is not done as heavily. The movie sets it up so that Phil is becoming Rita’s ideal guy through genuine effort at improvement, not just trying to cheat through the loop as we’ve seen, and this is sweet and shows he really listened to her.

But what the musical implies with Phil hearing what Rita would do just in general implies Phil aspires to be more like Rita - someone who treats every day with hope and zest for life and genuine compassion. It pushes that message more of Phil stepping out from his own shadow and being a better person, inspired by someone he’s begun to care about and truly appreciate.
