'In Christopher Nolan's new epic Oppenheimer, Florence Pugh portrays Jean Tatlock, J. Robert Oppenheimer's lover who meets a tragic end when she dies by suicide. Though Pugh is barely in the three hour plus film, her performance is impactful, and leaves the viewer wanting more.
If you got out of the movie theaters and immediately thought to Google Jean Tatlock, you're in the right place. Here's the true story of the woman depicted on screen:
She was a psychiatrist.
Jean Frances Tatlock was the daughter of John Strong Perry Tatlock, a professor of English, and Marjorie Tatlock (née Fenton). Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tatlock went to Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts before enrolling in Vassar. She graduated in 1935 and then went to Berkeley to complete prerequisites for medical school. Later, she attended Stanford Medical School, where she graduated in 1941 as a psychiatrist.
She was a member of the Communist Party.
While at Stanford, Tatlock wrote for the Western Worker, the Communist Party's west coast periodical.
Tatlock met J. Robert Oppenheimer in Berkley in 1936.
At the time, she was a graduate student and Oppenheimer was a physics professor. Oppenheimer described their relationship during his 1954 security hearing as follows:
In the spring of 1936, I had been introduced by friends to Jean Tatlock, the daughter of a noted professor of English at the university; and in the autumn, I began to court her, and we grew close to each other. We were at least twice close enough to marriage to think of ourselves as engaged. Between 1939 and her death in 1944 I saw her very rarely. She told me about her Communist Party memberships; they were on again, off again affairs, and never seemed to provide for her what she was seeking. I do not believe that her interests were really political. She loved this country and its people and its life. She was, as it turned out, a friend of many fellow travelers and Communists, with a number of whom I was later to become acquainted.
Oppenheimer reportedly proposed to Tatlock twice. After he wed Kitty Harrison, the scientist still saw Tatlock a few times, and some historians believe he had an affair with Tatlock while working on the Manhattan Project.
Furthermore, Tatlock introduced Oppenheimer to John Donne's poetry. It's possible that Oppenheimer named the "Trinity" test as a tribute to her and the verse.
She questioned her sexuality.
Tatlock reportedly wondered whether or not she was gay. According to An Atomic Love Story by Shirley Streshinsky and Patricia Klaus, she wrote to a friend, "there was a period when I thought I was homosexual. I still am, in a way, forced to believe it, but really, logically, I am sure that I can't be because of my un-masculinity."
There's some mystery around her 1944 death.
While Jean was being treated at Mount Zion hospital in San Francisco for depression, her father found her dead in her apartment. There was an unsigned suicide note, which read, "I am disgusted with everything... To those who loved me and helped me, all love and courage. I wanted to live and to give and I got paralyzed somehow. I tried like hell to understand and couldn't... I think I would have been a liability all my life—at least I could take away the burden of a paralyzed soul from a fighting world." Most agree Tatlock died by suicide.
But some historians—including Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, authors of American Prometheus, which forms the basis for Nolan's Oppenheimer—question her death.
"According to the coroner, Tatlock had eaten a full meal shortly before her death," Bird and Sherwin write. "If it was her intention to drug and then drown herself, as a doctor she had to have known that undigested food slows the metabolizing of drugs into the system. The autopsy report contains no evidence that the barbiturates had reached her liver or other vital organs. Neither does the report indicate whether she had taken a sufficiently large dose of barbiturates to cause death. To the contrary, as previously noted, the autopsy determined that the cause of death was asphyxiation by drowning."
The authors continue, "These curious circumstances are suspicious enough—but the disturbing information contained in the autopsy report is the assertion that the coroner found 'a faint trace of chloral hydrate' in her system. If administered with alcohol, chloral hydrate is the active ingredient of what was then commonly called a 'Mickey Finn'—knockout drops. In short, several investigators have speculated, Jean may have been 'slipped a Mickey,' and then forcibly drowned in her bathtub."
Of course, this is all speculation; Bird and Sherwin agree there's not enough evidence to definitively say one way or another.'

A thing on Uran and Helena in Pluto
Tumblr media
Okay a short little thing on Pluto. Uran and Helena are my absolute favourite characters in Pluto. Urasawa has always had amazing side characters, from Mr. Rosso in Monster to Lee Harvey Oswald and Jackie in Billy Bat to God in 20th Century Boys, but very few have tied off the emotional ends of the story like Uran and Helena.
Maybe I'm projecting here but much like myself I feel like Urasawa is absolutely obsessed with Frankenstein. And he recognizes the influence Frankenstein has on Dr. Umataro Tenma. Or at the very least, the similarities between the two. And so when he made the protagonist of one of his most popular works Monster, Dr Kenzo Tenma, he solidified that connection. Kenzo Tenma calls back to Victor Frankenstein needing to end his creation while also calling back to Japan's other famous Tenma, thus making the connection explicit. Another throughline between the three of them is that all three are father figures to their creations and have obligations to their children, though all three have varying levels of success with them.
I've only read what I like to call Urasawa's "Core Four", conspiracy minded thrillers that are essentially road trips featuring usually two main protagonists that we see the world through, Monster, 20th Century Boys, Pluto and Billy Bat. Though I still haven't caught up to Asadora and that could still possibly fit this mold, Urasawa's Core Four share a lot of themes and ideas. One of the most important being the responsibility for one's creations, whether it was Kenji Endo and the Book of Prophecy or Kevin Yamagata and Billy Bat or Dr. Kenzo Tenma and Johan, all of his protagonists could arguably be seen as someone with the need to take up the responsibility of their creations. So where do the protagonists of Pluto fit in there? That's where Uran and Helena come in.
But first, we should take a look at Pluto's themes. While I could be wrong, at a cursory glance, I feel like the general consensus towards it's themes is that it's about hatred. I don't really think that's what it is as I feel like Urasawa is more trying to show us what it is to be human and what it is to be alive. And in that, he has a hidden protagonist in Pluto. Someone who's influence snakes through the plot and isn't seen much, but without who the story's themes would remain incomplete. Pluto tackles what it is to be alive through many things, such as memory, sadness, grief, hatred, love and parenthood. But none of that works without the realization by Tenma of his own mistakes. And Uran and Helena bookend these revelations and are absolutley key to understanding that.
Tumblr media
In my favourite chapter of the series, Chapter 37, Uran goes from person to person as she finds a way to deal with her grief and eventually comes across Tobio's grave, Tenma having left recently. It's an absolutely beautiful chapter that shows Uran's humanity and Urasawa's love for sharing these kind and soft moments. But it also sheds a light on Tenma as Uran realizes someone who was grieving has just left. Without saying much at all we realize that Tenma has finally realized his mistakes. In the process of grieving one son, he lost the other. While remembering Tobio, he let Atom go. His grief towards Tobio is clear in the following chapter, Chapter 38. All of the things he wanted Atom to be; Tobio come back to life, Tobio's ghost punishing him, Atom rejected. And Tenma could only see that rejection, and not what he had, another son.
Tumblr media
Uran shows us very clearly what Pluto, the story, is. It's a chapter in their lives. And we've come into a story nearing the end for Tenma. And it's through the humanity of two absolutely amazing characters in their own right, Uran and Helena, that we are able to so fully understand Tenma. Despite being robots, these two characters are the most alive of everyone. They love fully and freely and are catalysts of change. Uran's vibrant and full of life in a way that really sticks out. And Helena has such depth that it's evident in every scene she's in. She's not pointed out to be made by any famous scientist so all the life she has is her own. These two represent the life of robot's more than any other characters in the series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So it's that much more poignant when Helena finally breaks down after putting on such a strong front of everybody. Grief intersects and she brings out Tenma's sadness as well. They've both been putting up such strong fronts that it's heartbreaking to see them collapse. It completes Tenma's growth and strikes a heartbreaking contrast between the two. Tenma became the way he is through the loss of his son whereas Helena doesn't even get to remember her own loss. It makes you wonder if the grief for her and Geischt's child compounds her sorrow too.
Tumblr media
Without these two and their grief, a large part of Pluto becomes inaccessible. Pluto is largely about death so when two characters come in who've never had a hand in the grim work of taking life, you see the world through a lens that's absolutely crucial in order to fully connect with all of the character's and their situations. Death and Grief has scarred the characters in Pluto. Time and time again they've chosen the worst path. They've chosen revenge and hatred. But Uran and Helena are different. Without them, the story is incomplete. They provide an alternative. They provide the path towards healing.
im sorry for this one:

Grandma deserves three grandsons!
I caught up on the last three episodes of The Rebound before the finale, because I'm excited to see how this ends (the court is in Ryu and Zen's colors, so they will at least advance to the finals)
Tumblr media
But all's I really know is each one of these color-coded boys deserves TWO color-coded boyfriends.
Tumblr media
They all have two hands!
Tumblr media
I know this is the love story between a "Nobody Cares" Blue Boy and a "Be Kind" Yellow/Orange Oddity.
Tumblr media
But my Green Guy with yellow over his heart is the perfect middleman because he is sad and pushy but respectful and kind.
Tumblr media
And he clearly likes Zen so much since Zen's yellow pops up around him often.
Tumblr media
But so does Ryu's blue!
Tumblr media
For heaven's sake, he is wearing (and riding) Ryu's blue!
Tumblr media
And when Ryu and Zen are having their cute couple's moment outside the store, there is a green bike just chillin' next to them!
Tumblr media
When Ryu and Zen are having the longest heart-to-heart during what should be a standard thirty second timeout, they are standing on green!
Tumblr media
Atom is in this relationship with them. HE IS LITERALLY IN THAT BED RIGHT NEXT TO ZEN!
Tumblr media
Grandma deserves three grandsons, each boy deserves two boyfriends. AND ZEN IS THE CENTER OF EVERYONE'S WORLD!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once again this is a story about Ryu and Zen which is why their colors show up everywhere like the locker room shelves.
Tumblr media
And their colors are the light poles on the dunk tanks, BUT Atom literally showed up too to help them!
Tumblr media
The lanyard Zen wears at work is his and Ryu's colors, yet somehow looks like it morphs into Atom's green in the middle.
Tumblr media
Ryu has picked up Zen's color.
Tumblr media
And Ryu has gladly given Zen his color.
Tumblr media
But even when Ryu goes to see his blue (bitch) mother [I wrote what I wrote]
Tumblr media
And that giant red X appears
Tumblr media
Yellow and GREEN back him up with the division between them!
Tumblr media
Because Zen and Grandma have done so much to make Atom and Ryu happy and in response, Ryu and Atom would do anything and everything to make sure Zen and Grandma are happy!
Tumblr media
They rush to the hospital to take care of Zen and Grandma (note that Atom has on a BLUE jacket!)
Tumblr media
And even with the barriers between them, they both openly acknowledge the other one is a good partner FOR EACH OTHER! They were talking about how they are good partners on the basketball court FOR EACH OTHER!
Tumblr media
And it's true! At the 3-on-3 tournament, the court is lit by their colors: yellow on the bottom left, blue on the middle top, and green on the bottom right.
Tumblr media
Even when they they are actually playing as R.A.Z on the court sponsored by RAIN|BOW and ALL THIS, there is blue and yellow, and green is peeking out in the bottom right corner.
Tumblr media
Because normally everything about basketball is only Ryu and Zen's colors.
Tumblr media
But Atom is part of their story now because all of their colors are there!
Tumblr media
And even though the first game of the 3-on-3 tournament started by focusing on Zen's situation and Zen's color.
Tumblr media
They won the final game with all three of their colors on that scoreboard.
Tumblr media
So I am praying that the final acknowledges the special bond these three boys have! If Atom rescues Ryu to make Zen happy, great! If Ryu and Atom finally hug, great! If they all go off to college together, AMAZING!
But as far as I'm concerned,
THEY. ARE. CANON!

Spoilers for like everything
Bree and Conner both are part fairy…. I’m horrible at whatever it’s called genetic….. stuff anyways.
It would be possible if they had a child with magical abilities fully… let me explain.
The both carry the magic gene (I’m tryna go off stuff I learned 2 years ago so correct me if I’m incorrect) it would be possible since they are direct descendants of magical. Thus at least one of there kids being fully fairy.
Does this make sense?? CHRIS SHOULD Have WENT OFF WITH THIS!. As much as I love the atom plot it had to many holes like why was the past more advanced then the future… so swap it with Conner grandchild or something. With the issues coming back like the dragons or immortal. The whole demon king and give it to a new character who would have been the demon born among mankind. The 333 could have been a threat to magic still and be a bigger threat if magic was in its prime…
Holy I got side tracked

I love the land of stories and a tale of magic but they do Not line up.
The plot holes guys
The snow Queen is dead so why is she alive? How?
What the heck Xantheous doing? He’s suppose to be ruling demons with his boyfriend who was never mentioned.
Why were all dragon made to be extinct when there was a whole little story about they shouldn’t be killed and aren’t actually bad they’re just subservient?
The relationship between witches and fairies? Like what went wrong there?
Alchemist??????? Never mentioned.
Like I know that atom was written after tlos, but like it would’ve nice if Chris had kept it consistent.

just finished watching pluto (and just finished crying my fucking eyes out at every scene featuring epsilon and his kids) and while i understand that the focus is the philosophical and emotional narratives being explored and the weight that is given to each character, human or not, and how they grapple with their pain, it would have been kinda funny if the show had ended like this

This director has one. more. time. to sniff the coach in The Rebound before I start planning their wedding.
Tumblr media
And even though it's obvious Zen only loves Ryu, Atom is an amazing Green Guy who already incorporates Zen's colors into his life (the helmet!)
Tumblr media
He deserves love and happiness and good things!
Tumblr media
So if Prince can crush on his best friend and find love in the showers
Tumblr media
Let me offer up another boy who Atom can find love with in unexpected places - JEDI!
Tumblr media
As much as I support poly, Ryu and Zen are color-coded boys IN LOVE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is complicated
Tumblr media
(But not as complicated as Ryu's relationship with "his brother" or Q's relationship with "his boss" --- if I ignore it all, it simply doesn't exist)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jedi is on the team and will be at this retreat
Tumblr media
But Ryu and Zen will be too busy with their own color-coded love story being tied up together and whatnot
Tumblr media
So when Atom brings snacks . . . let The Force find him
Tumblr media
Give this sweet kid a good love story.
Tumblr media
Please.
