'In Christopher Nolan's new epic Oppenheimer, Florence Pugh portrays Jean Tatlock, J. Robert Oppenheimer's lover who meets a tragic end when she dies by suicide. Though Pugh is barely in the three hour plus film, her performance is impactful, and leaves the viewer wanting more.
If you got out of the movie theaters and immediately thought to Google Jean Tatlock, you're in the right place. Here's the true story of the woman depicted on screen:
She was a psychiatrist.
Jean Frances Tatlock was the daughter of John Strong Perry Tatlock, a professor of English, and Marjorie Tatlock (née Fenton). Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tatlock went to Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts before enrolling in Vassar. She graduated in 1935 and then went to Berkeley to complete prerequisites for medical school. Later, she attended Stanford Medical School, where she graduated in 1941 as a psychiatrist.
She was a member of the Communist Party.
While at Stanford, Tatlock wrote for the Western Worker, the Communist Party's west coast periodical.
Tatlock met J. Robert Oppenheimer in Berkley in 1936.
At the time, she was a graduate student and Oppenheimer was a physics professor. Oppenheimer described their relationship during his 1954 security hearing as follows:
In the spring of 1936, I had been introduced by friends to Jean Tatlock, the daughter of a noted professor of English at the university; and in the autumn, I began to court her, and we grew close to each other. We were at least twice close enough to marriage to think of ourselves as engaged. Between 1939 and her death in 1944 I saw her very rarely. She told me about her Communist Party memberships; they were on again, off again affairs, and never seemed to provide for her what she was seeking. I do not believe that her interests were really political. She loved this country and its people and its life. She was, as it turned out, a friend of many fellow travelers and Communists, with a number of whom I was later to become acquainted.
Oppenheimer reportedly proposed to Tatlock twice. After he wed Kitty Harrison, the scientist still saw Tatlock a few times, and some historians believe he had an affair with Tatlock while working on the Manhattan Project.
Furthermore, Tatlock introduced Oppenheimer to John Donne's poetry. It's possible that Oppenheimer named the "Trinity" test as a tribute to her and the verse.
She questioned her sexuality.
Tatlock reportedly wondered whether or not she was gay. According to An Atomic Love Story by Shirley Streshinsky and Patricia Klaus, she wrote to a friend, "there was a period when I thought I was homosexual. I still am, in a way, forced to believe it, but really, logically, I am sure that I can't be because of my un-masculinity."
There's some mystery around her 1944 death.
While Jean was being treated at Mount Zion hospital in San Francisco for depression, her father found her dead in her apartment. There was an unsigned suicide note, which read, "I am disgusted with everything... To those who loved me and helped me, all love and courage. I wanted to live and to give and I got paralyzed somehow. I tried like hell to understand and couldn't... I think I would have been a liability all my life—at least I could take away the burden of a paralyzed soul from a fighting world." Most agree Tatlock died by suicide.
But some historians—including Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, authors of American Prometheus, which forms the basis for Nolan's Oppenheimer—question her death.
"According to the coroner, Tatlock had eaten a full meal shortly before her death," Bird and Sherwin write. "If it was her intention to drug and then drown herself, as a doctor she had to have known that undigested food slows the metabolizing of drugs into the system. The autopsy report contains no evidence that the barbiturates had reached her liver or other vital organs. Neither does the report indicate whether she had taken a sufficiently large dose of barbiturates to cause death. To the contrary, as previously noted, the autopsy determined that the cause of death was asphyxiation by drowning."
The authors continue, "These curious circumstances are suspicious enough—but the disturbing information contained in the autopsy report is the assertion that the coroner found 'a faint trace of chloral hydrate' in her system. If administered with alcohol, chloral hydrate is the active ingredient of what was then commonly called a 'Mickey Finn'—knockout drops. In short, several investigators have speculated, Jean may have been 'slipped a Mickey,' and then forcibly drowned in her bathtub."
Of course, this is all speculation; Bird and Sherwin agree there's not enough evidence to definitively say one way or another.'

TMAGP 24 Spoilers (theories & reactions)
Pre - Case (Gwen and Lena chat):
So Gwen wants her position back and is swallowing her pride to do it? Ok, I understand she is traumatized, but I don't think that she would go as far as to be super respectful to Lena AND go back to the position that traumatized her... she has a plan. Even if being on the "inside" offers more protections than just quitting, we know Gwem hated the Externals and wants to fight back against them, so why would she go after the job?
I think she is going to act more like Lena in regards to working up to her former position and working in her former position - she needs to be blank, with little emotions, and calm. She is going to be safer on the inside - earning the trust of Lena, her higher-ups, the Externals, ect, then she's going to bring it crashing down. She (with the help of Alice and probably Sam, Celia, and Colin, perhaps Lena as well) is going to go what-Martin-encourged-Jon-to-do-in-season-5 and Gertrude-Robinson style and start trying to get rid of the Externals and stop whatever plan the higher-ups have.
There was static when Lena asked Gwen, "What has changed?" after she said that "[she] will require [Gwen] to be honest." Lena, are you compelling Gwen? Perhaps an Elias-type compulsion (like how he pulled out Daisy's story of her scar) or maybe an Annabelle-type compulsion (placing an idea in her head that ghe truth would be better). Either way, it's interesting!
Gwen was so calm when saying "Thank you, Lena" it was almost frightening. Also the audio glitch when she said it? I love the sarcasm Gwen!/gen
Lena was wary??? (referencing transcript here). Hmmm...
Maybe she's recognizing something in Gwen that she saw either in her younger self or in a former OIAR worker, or perhaps even Klaus?
Case:
(Norris Case)
Patricia Spaulding recently had her son Rupert, of which she does not remember much of the pregnancy or giving birth, who has a lot of similar features to vampires/avatars of the Flesh in TMA (black eyes, long, thin and curly tounge, sharp teeth). Rupert eats from her (literally) every 4 hours (and more), as advised by the "health visitor," causing Patricia to (literally) lose herself in taking care of him. Patricia also attends a mum support group with several other mums, including one named Celia. Patricia starts having hallucinations (auditory and visual) and is eventually consumed by Rupert.
Rupert definitely feels like an Avatar of the Flesh, but the case is also very reminiscent of the Spiral, especially with this "health visitor" and them normalizing Rupert's abnormal behavior and Patricia's abnormal responses. They were also "helping out" with Rupert every day by the time Patricia was consumed.
Theory: This "mum support group" is full of mum's that were chosen to raise Avatars of the Fears that were created in a similar way to Agnes, as "embodiments" of their Fears. Patricia had Rupert, an Avatar of the Flesh, and Celia, who I'm predicting is our Celia, had Jack, an Avatar of the Desolation (who was either created in some way by Agnes, or was created from Agnes (aka the Lightless Flame) to be her successor). The reason why Rupert was "so good" for Celia is because either she is protected by Agnes or Jack in some way due to her connection with Jack or because her "scent" is different (as described by Lady Mowbray), since she is from TMA- verse (or a combination of the two).
Post - Case (Alice, Celia, Sam chat):
Sam is nervous - that makes sense, given that Basira could be a dead end, like TMAGP- verse Teaholding (I'm so sad about that 😭), and like Gertrude appeared to be.
Alice is trying to tell Sam and Celia about Gwen and the externals! Yay communication!!!
Sam, listen to her, please 😭😭
Yay! Celia, thank you for believing her! (Although we know the reason why lol)
"Is it really so hard to believe that something is hunting us back?" - Celia
"Hunting us back" is a really interesting choice of words. So is this Celia admitting to her knowledge of Sam looking for Externals, or Gwen and Lena looking for and attempting to control and utilize Externals, or Celia herself hunting Externals? I'm more inclined to believe that she's acknowledging that she and Sam are "hunting" Externals by looking into the Institute. But the implications...
(obligatory Starkid joke below)
They are definitely something to watch out for in the future.
Sam, PLEASE BELIEVE ALICE!
I feel like this seen is showing Sam's manipulative - side. It's very interesting to see this more front and center, rather than just through petty actions and small comments...
Thank you Celia, for getting these two to come to an agreement!
Post - Case (Basira!!!):
Basira is a deputy headmistress at St. Luke's? Not an officer?
I was really shocked at first, but this does make sense. We know that she is Eye- aligned and values logic (she was so close to becoming an Avatar during the Unknowing when she was using logic to get out of the unlogic). She also has always been more of an academic, being a teacher would make sense. Her boss, Mr. Donaldson, is the headmaster. I wonder if he will be important later on. She's been in her current role for almost 5 years, and this is her 4th educational position, as well as her 2nd position as deputy headmistress (however, there was an audio glitch here, so she could be embellishing her accomplishments here). She formerly held a position at Edgecroft Avademy, which she was nominated for an Pearson Award for. TMAGP!Basira seems to value her work in the same way as TMA!Basira.
She was caught off-guard by Sam's mention of the Institute, and then denied knowing anything about it. Perhaps she didn't have any involvement with it, but maybe a friend or family member did? (Please, I just need to hear Daisy again 😭😭😭)
Of course Celia would ask if Basira had any involvement with the police! She knew her as a police officer in the TMA-verse.
I really like today's episode. I absolutely hate horror involving childen, so I was terrified during the case (which is good! The episodes that really scare me are some of my favorites). It had really interesting implications for Celia and Gwen, and overall, the connections between the TMA and TMAGP universe.

'Although Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is mainly concerned with the explosive outcome of J. Robert Oppenheimer's work, the biopic paints a broader picture of his life – showing audiences the personal ramifications of creating a weapon as devastating as the atomic bomb.
Irish star Cillian Murphy plays the scientist alongside Emily Blunt as his wife, Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer. Their family is a key part of the story, as is Oppenheimer's raunchy fling with psychiatrist Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh).
The affair wasn't made up by Nolan solely to spice up the movie, however. Oppenheimer really did have an affair with Tatlock while working on the Manhattan Project.
Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" includes the scientist's relationship with Jean Tatlock.
The movie explains that Oppenheimer met psychiatrist Jean Tatlock while he was teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, in the 1930s.
The pair's romantic relationship escalated as Tatlock got Oppenheimer interested in politics, largely because she was part of the Communist Party USA.
Oppenheimer explicitly explained his relationship with Tatlock when speaking at his federal security hearing in 1954 – which is also seen in the film.
He said: "In the spring of 1936, I had been introduced by friends to Jean Tatlock, the daughter of a noted professor of English at the university; and in the autumn, I began to court her, and we grew close to each other. We were at least twice close enough to marriage to think of ourselves as engaged. Between 1939 and her death in 1944 I saw her very rarely."
In the transcript (which is still available to read in its entirety), Oppenheimer confirmed that he visited Tatlock in 1943 at her San Francisco apartment, only a few months before her death.
"Our meetings were rare. I do not think it would be right to say our acquaintance was casual. We had been very much involved with one another and there was still very deep feeling when we saw each other. … I visited her, as I think I said earlier, in June or July of 1943," he said.
Tatlock died by suicide on January 4, 1944, though there is some debate about whether she was murdered by Manhattan Project intelligence agents.
Although Oppenheimer had an on-and-off relationship with Tatlock, he married Kitty in 1940, shortly after she fell pregnant. That in itself was a scandal since Kitty was married to Richard Harrison at the time, but she divorced him during the pregnancy.
When directly questioned, Oppenheimer confirmed that he "spent the night" with Tatlock in 1943. So it seems highly likely that Oppenheimer did cheat on his wife with Tatlock.
Oppenheimer is believed to have had an affair with Ruth Tolman while leading the Manhattan Project.
Tatlock wasn't the only woman that Oppenheimer had a connection with outside of his marriage to Kitty, as he allegedly had an affair with Ruth Sherman Tolman, a psychologist who worked for the Office of Strategic Services.
Tolman was 10 years older than Oppenheimer, and was also married to Richard Tolman — a physicist in Pasadena who advised the Manhattan Project.
Nolan's movie uses this in the story, suggesting that Oppenheimer started having an affair with Ruth (Louise Lombard) to spite Richard (Tom Jenkins) because he was originally left out of a meeting about the Manhattan Project.
Nolan's film is based on Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin's 2005 book about Oppenheimer, called "American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer." Bird and Sherwin suggest that Tolman and Oppenheimer had a "very caring and sweet affair."
This is backed up by the 2013 book, "An Atomic Love Story: The Extraordinary Women in Robert Oppenheimer's Life," by Shirley Streshinsky and Patricia Klaus, which says the affair "was not believed to have been sexual, only a close emotional bond and connection."
Oppenheimer stayed with Kitty and raised a family with her until his death in 1967. They had two children, Peter and Toni.'

hey i’m reading your ravenclaw au (love it so much so far!) and i was wondering if you had a list of older queer literature? because i’d like to start reading more of it!
thank you so much!!!
well, with the caveat of "what defines 'older'?"
first, there's the literature I've titled Ravenclaw AU after:
the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud (less overtly queer works-wise and a lot is meant to be as shockingly disturbing as possible but he did very much run away with Verlaine lol)
the works of Thomas Mann in general - Death in Venice is considered a classic (though I'd look up content warnings if you're sensitive to certain things), but I quoted Tonio Kröger which is a short story
Maurice by E.M. Forster
(Philippe Besson is a contemporary writer, but I'd recommend his works regardless)
Walt Whitman has a few poems on the subject of male beauty etc. that are flowery enough to be quoted outside
Ronald M. Schernikau!!! He died in the 90s at a young age, but regardless, I would consider him of a previous generation of queer literature - born in East Germany, emigrated to the West with his family, moved back to East Germany of his own free will (and studied in Leipzig like truly). I quoted kleinstadtnovelle, but die tage in l. is also highly recommended - though with the caveat that idk if his work has ever been translated and it's not stylistically an easy read for non-native speakers
(Aciman is also a contemporary writer, but again: highly recommended)
Klaus Mann! Yes, related to Thomas Mann (he's his son). I haven't actually read Mephisto though I've owned it for like a decade lol
the poetry of Wilfred Owen
Works / authors that I haven't referenced but would also recommend:
The Charioteer by Mary Renault
Gertrude Stein's works
the poetry of Allen Ginsberg. was the dude shit? yes. but his poetry is amazing.
Gore Vidal!
Larry Kramer!!!
Tony Kushner!
Patricia Highsmith
Edmund White's A Boy's Own Story (and subsequent books) is like... extremely fucked and very much a product of its time, but I think it's very good
and you didn't ask but contemporary works i'd recommend include:
literally anything Cat Sebastian has ever written, especially if you like Ravenclaw AU, because she specializes in coziness (my favorites are Two Rogues Make A Right and Peter Cabot Gets Lost)
How to Write an Autobiographical Novel by Alexander Chee
Olivia Waite's works are very good as well - she specializes in F/F romance
KJ Charles if you like plottier romance (but they are romance)
Again reiterating: André Aciman and Philippe Besson!
I have not read Sarah Waters but people who I trust highly recommend her works.
But if you're looking for books that have similar vibes to Ravenclaw AU, definitely look at Cat Sebastian, even though she's a contemporary writer; most of the older works I've listed are not as, um, cozy.
#and if you want queer books i fucking hate: cemetery boys is at the top of that list#caveat that i am casually acquainted with at least one author on this list lol#ask box

some co!headcanons:
his name is klaus edward kohler, his parents are kenneth and patricia kohler, and he has a brother named emery kohler. emery is technically his cousin but was adopted by co's parents when they were both young. co was a senior when emery was a freshman.
co stands for companion, while also being a play off his last name.
co is 6'5, which limits the positions he can play in basketball. co generally plays either shooting guard or small forward depending on the team / his coach, which is attributed to primarily his height, then skill.
he has a dog named chance that is 2 in his main verse and is a boxer mix. he has an older dog at home that's the family pet named sadie, and a few outdoor cats that hang around. sadie is almost 11.
co is actually somewhat insecure. he really fears he will fail.
he is on a scholarship. he is not that bright, and he does work part-time at a gas station to make money where he can, while his family tries to help. he hopes to make it in the NBA.
