Do they, though?

Every single episode (unless it's non-canon) contributes something to the wider show and its story: character-building, worldbuilding, foreshadowing, rewatch bonuses, a much-needed break after an intense plot event, more time spent with the characters, and so on.

Yes, that last example matters a lot, too: the more time you spend with characters in character-driven stories, the more you'll care about them when plot stuff happens. Canonical screen time, baby!

With all that in mind, you can see why I object to slapping a "skippable" sticker onto lower-stakes episodes. And why I, by the way, am not a fan of the highly subjective "[insert cartoon here] filler list" guides people make for non-anime shows. Fans do themselves a big disservice by looking at these lists and skipping the episodes listed on there.

There are no salamanders living in the Caribbean today, but one tiny fossil shows that this wasn't always the case.

Palaeoplethodon hispaniolae was discovered in a chunk of amber from the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola. The exact age of this type of amber is uncertain, but it most likely dates to the early-to-mid Miocene, about 20-15 million years ago.

The only known specimen is a hatchling, just under 2cm long (0.8"). It's unclear what its full adult size could have been, but based on its modern relatives it may have grown to anywhere between 4.5cm and 20cm long (~2-8").

Its strongly webbed hands and feet suggest it was very closely related to modern tropical climbing salamanders – but Palaeoplethodon had a unique webbing arrangement, with its feet relatively elongated and its hands fully fused into small rounded pads.

Guys, I have a confession to make. I believe Sallie May is one of the most overrated characters in Helluva Boss.

I don’t believe she’s overrated simply because she’s trans. It’s just for a different reason that I will explain shortly, but first who is this character I'm talking about?

Who is Sallie May?

Sallie May is Millie’s sister who debuted in Hell of a Boss Episode Five, the Harvest Moon Festival. After some time after the release of the episode she was pretty popular among the Hell of a Boss fandom

So what're my thoughts about her overall? Well, Sallie May is a character, that's pretty much it. I don't have any opinions on her as a character because she isn’t fleshed out. She is Millie's sister who is transgender, that's really what Sallie May is. She looks pretty, but Sallie May doesn't have any standalone character similar to Octavia and Millie.

So that's how I feel about Sallie May, she's overall just a side character. It's cool that they added her to the show, but that's all.

Now that, that's out of the way I'm going to talk about..how Vivziepop and the other creators used her and why I don’t like it. This is going to be pretty controversial for me to discuss so don’t pull out your pitchforks yet.

What I don't like upon Harvest Moon Festival’s release is that a lot of people, including me were not aware that Sallie May was transgender and there was very little indication of that. The only thing that points out that Sallie May is trans is her horns.

As people know, Male imps and Female imps have different patterns for their horns. However, that information is not shared within Helluva Boss.

It requires outside research like in the wikis, Livestreams, or people telling you in order to make sense.

Upon first watching Harvest Moon Festival, I had no idea that Sallie May was transgender until a Reddit post basically told me that she was.

If you're going to have a character with a certain gender identity, establish it within the series. It could've been something simple like a pin of the transgender flag or a button that has the colors of the transgender flag.

The writers of Amphibia did it with Sasha where Sasha had a bisexual heart sticker on her rearview mirror. It doesn't have to be something big, but it can be small and easily noticeable.

I don’t get how people consider Sallie May to be a trans icon when lots of people didn’t even know she was trans in the first place.

Why I believe she's overrated and why she's loved within the Fandom

Now the real question is why do I believe she’s overhyped? Well, simply put it she does not have much screen time overall. Sallie May has around 13 to at most 20 seconds of screentime and Harvest Moon Festival is 17 minutes and 30 seconds long excluding the credits.

Sallie May doesn't make an appearance later on in the episode despite the fact that Millie and Sallie's mom, Lin said that Sallie May would compete in the Pain Games. Not once is Sallie May shown in the Pain Games.

Sallie May also doesn't appear later on in the episode. Viv and Brandon just include her in those couple of seconds and decided "That's all she gets".

But why is Sallie May overrated as a character? Well, it's simple, merchandise.

Despite being a side character, Sallie May is present in a lot of merch. In the Valentine’s and Summer merch sales for Hell of a Boss, Sallie May is highly sexualized.

Sallie May hasn't gone through the transition surgery, which is fine, but the merch puts A LOT of emphasis on that.

What I mean is that…her bulge is showing.

Sallie May's swimsuit and Valentine’s merchandise are clear examples of this, they just let Sallie May’s thing bulge out with no care in the world. Why is it that Sallie May’s bulge is exposing itself in nearly all of her raunchy merch, but none of the characters who identify as males (except for Chaz) are not?

Conclusion

In conclusion, I believe Sallie May is really overhyped because she’s sexualized as hell. I get that people like her because she’s trans and that we have a trans character in Helluva Boss, but then again there are also two other characters in this show that are trans.

And one character in Harvest Moon Festival that is also trans

At least that’s what the horns and hair color imply, but I don’t see the fandom falling head over hills for these two characters.

The trans rep in Helluva Boss sucks, Sallie May has more screen time as merchandise than she does as an actual character. Let that sink in.

He paused, and briefly pursed his lips, feigning innocence. Getting called a "scamp" was certainly a new one, but... she was absolutely not wrong. He wasn't quite sure how Amity had heard, but the chaotic schemes and shenanigans him and King came up with were enough to raise Eda's eyebrows now and then.

They perked back up at Amity's validation, calling them and their progress great. Even after the things they had done, someone as cool as Amity still believed in them and the ability to become a better person... it made their chest feel all... fuzzy.

Having been shooed off from Amity's book, they only pouted slightly as Amity gave her reasons as to why he couldn't look, not fully content with the answer, but not wanting to push her to tell them something if it wasn't something he needed to know... he was still working on that one with King, he just loved knowing all sorts of stuff, he wanted to know everything all at once - even if it was just "small potatoes". Though, he did beam with pride at Amity calling them powerful.

They stood for a second, a hand brought up to their chin when Amity put the ball in their court to talk about star systems. Hmm, there were all sorts of cool ones he had learned about, and Amity was a smart girl, she probably already knew this all, but... ❝ Oh! Do you know that most solar systems are binary? ❞ He settled on that little tidbit, a fact he personally found to be super cool and interesting. ❝ Meaning, they usually got two stars, and the star pairs spin around each other. Most of the systems I've seen in my travels are like that, and some even have three stars! ❞ They grinned, lifting a finger ❝ Buuuut, a few systems here and there only have one star, so they're nonbinary, and one of these systems is the Boiling Isles', and get this - Luz once said the human realm's star is the same way, too! ❞

👻⊱ The smile from the star child caused a reactionary return smile from Amity.

“Well, after all, someone should be asking what you little scamps get up to!”

Amity winks at him! Maybe that was not the full story she was not sure for King, but all she cared about was keeping a smile on this young child’s face. She knew briefly from Luz that they had made a promise to her to keep being their best self. Her having spent a lot of time with kids in the library was all for it. Look at the changes Luz could make in someone’s life! She had to believe it was absolutely possible.

“Hey! That’s great! You are starting somewhere and you’re making progress.”

His little “Heyyy!” melted the stern but the hidden sweet center of her “sour lemon drop heart” -Luz once called it! Still, Amity keeps blocking her book with her entire body!

“Umm… Collector. Abominations are kind of… more… Like puppets!”

She would not have him peeking into her book. She would not be responsible for scaring a kid for life because of Hexside’s poor censorship!

“Oh! This! Again like I said before… Uhh… Boring stuff! Really, really Boooring stuff. You probably wouldn’t want to know"little witch magic”. With all your infinite abilities and all… You know small potatoes compared to what You can do.“

They continued on answering her question with another question. She realized she was not clear about which star systems she wanted to know. Honestly, it was all a ploy to tear his eyes away from her textbook! She had to think of a counter!

"I’ll take any star systems you wish to share. I can tell you know of them.” She mystically twiddled her fingers and grinned at the nonbinary star child.

Stumpy Stumpson is a supporting character in Amphibia. He resides in Wartwood Swamp and is the cook and owner of the restaurant, Stumpy's Diner which is named after himself.

He is a sizable green frog with yellow colored eyes and a white shirt, stained with grease and other stains, and several scars on his body. He possesses an interchangeable hand, usually with a spatula (carved from the bones of his missing hand) in it, but can be swapped for a battle hammer.
