I know that a lot of people are upset that Claramanda?? Clarrissa x Amanda didn't become a thing but I’m actually not you know why? Because we finally got a main character AJ and Luke relationship where they weren't cheating on each other or one died or something or other- they had problems, and they resolved them and married, like??? AJ and Luke are usually just betraying each other left and right, they rarely have a stable relationship and I’m not saying it was stable, but it ended in a healthy place and thats all that matters to me rn

No but imagine you're Mark for a minute. You live with your alcoholic father, your father who blames you for your mother's death, your mother who died because your father was drunk driving. And yet you're the one who shouldered the burden.

You grow up like this. That's fine, you tell yourself, because what else can you say?

You meet this wonderful woman. Her name is Suzanne (or is it Clarissa?) and she makes you feel whole again, like your guilt and trauma are nothing more than the past. After everything, you see a ray of light shining through.

And so you propose, wanting to spend the rest of your life with this wonderful woman. But just as you're on one knee with the ring in your hand, your girlfriend casts you aside and answers a phone call. This isn't the first time she's done this.

You call the engagement off, but you still want things to heal (how could you not?) and so you try. You try again to heal your relationship, because you love her and you want to make things right. But she does it again. She brushes off your feelings and makes you feel like you're no more than a sewer rat, scurrying from bin to bin and hiding in the walls. And to rub salt on the wound, when you try to express yourself, she calls you hotheaded and dismisses your feelings.

Like damn, Mark was just going through it the entire longform.

Ok so our first introduction to Amanda is her telling Clarissa that she can't base her whole personhood on a romantic partner, she needs to value herself before she can worry about romance. This shows the audience Amanda's beliefs about life and the place love has within it, and you can see it shine through in everything she does and says afterwards.

Beyond some frustration at Clarissa choosing Mark over her, she never seems heartbroken or sad about it, even while comforting her about the break up and helping Clarissa win back her boyfriend. I mean, it would be easy (and a common storyline) to jump on the break up and comforting Clarissa as a chance to "win her over", but Amanda doesnt try that. She seems pretty content to love and support Clarissa as a friend, even though most iterations of this "in love with a friend who doesn't even consider you an option" would have her deeply jealous and heartbroken

And Amanda is obviously extremely confident. Even when expressing sadness or frustration about her and Clarissa's relationship, she never gets self-deprecating like we see in Clarissa - and which is extremely common in one-sided love stories.

There's a whole emotional journey in Amanda's introductory words, because they came from experience. They tell us how Amanda's withstood the grief of one-sided love without it souring her friendship with Clarissa. Amanda knows that no matter how much she loves Clarissa, she's more than Clarissa. She matters on her own first and foremost.

I just think it's fascinating and super impressive how subtle and consistent that is in her character, despite none of it being pre-planned (obviously)
