a/n: this is an old drabble that has been in my drafts for like half a year. i wanted to post dolly today but since i got delayed here's a little something, happy valentine's day my babies🩷

You're slowly waking up. Your eyes flutter before you finally open them and they land on the window.

It's still dark out. 3am. That's what it says on your clock.

Great. This is the third night in a row that your roommate woke you up with strange noises in the kitchen. The last two nights you tried to ignore it.

Felix isn't the type of person to do stuff like that on purpose, so you let him be. Whatever he's doing won't be long, right?

Well, here you are, proven to be wrong.

You sigh, deciding you really need to get up and check what he's doing.

"Felix?" your voice startles him and he turns from the stove abruptly. He looks like a deer caught in headlights.

"Oh, I'm sorry! Did I wake you up? I'm sorry!" he panics, scrambling around the kitchen and moving stuff.

But you can see what he's trying to hide. There is at least five trays of well- kind of heart shaped cookies, some of them are burnt, some were crushed into pieces, some had icing on them.

"Are you nervous baking?" you chuckle, coming closer and you can see redness forming on his freckled cheeks.

"Yeah, something like that." he nods, avoiding your eyes.

"Are you making heart shaped cookies?" you try again.

"I'm trying to make heart shaped cookies." he corrects you, finally looking up at you. "I accidentally burned the first batch. And the second one, they started falling apart. And then this third one just wasn't the right taste. And the fourth one, the icing looks weird. And-"

"Why don't you breathe?" you place your hands on his shoulders as he almost starts hyperventilating.

"Yeah, yeah, that's like important." Felix says and you chuckle at his 3am brain.

"Can you tell me why you're doing this?" you ask when you think he's calmed down a little.

"I'm..." he swallows, "I'm trying to confess to someone."

"Oh." you nod. "And you wanna bring them cookies?"

"Yeah, exactly." he says, biting on his lip nervously.

"Since I'm not sleeping anymore, I could help you?" you suggest and he chuckles.

"Now that would be ironic." he says.

"What? Why would it be ironic?" you ask.

"No, no reason." Felix smirks at your 3am brain.

"Okay, you can help me."

Both of you get to work, to make perfectly heart shaped cookies that are also delicious and don't crumble the moment you grab them.

You wonder who the recipient is, but you don't want to pry, if Felix wanted to tell you he would.

"Alright, let's do a taste test." you nod confidently once they're done.

The two of you grab a cookie each and count down to one before biting into it.

"Mm, these are perfect!" you exclaim, eyes wide.

"They're so good!" Felix matches your excitement.

"Hey, thanks for helping me." he adds, smiling at you fondly.

"No problem, good luck with your confession." you say.

"Thank you." Felix chuckles.

When you walk into the kitchen the next morning, you see something covered up on the table.

You walk over to it slowly and realize there's a little paper with your name on it.

Your brows furrow in confusion as you pick up the note and reveal what was covered up.

"Oh." you gasp when you see the cookies you worked hard on last night with Felix, all nicely rounded in a cute basket with decorative flowers.

You take a look at the note but there's nothing on it except your name.

"See, this is why I said it's ironic you're helping me." Felix's voice startles you and you turn around and look at him.

He's leaning on the fridge, arms crossed on his chest as he smirks at you.

"W-what?" you ask like you're dumbfounded because there is no way.

"They're for you. I'm confessing to you." his smirk turns into a shy smile, his demeanor changing into something softer.

"Oh."

"Is that a good 'oh'? Or a bad 'oh'?" he asks.

"It's a good 'oh'." you chuckle and Felix comes closer to you.

"I like you. I have for a while. And I was wondering if you feel the same. And if you do, maybe we can take this basket of cookies on a picnic date with us." Felix says and you chuckle at him, your heart rate picking up speed.

"I'd love to take the cookies on a picnic date."

Both of you laugh, and Felix is leaning closer into you.

"Does that mean you like me? Or you just like the cookies?" he asks, his breath hitting your cheek and making your heart flutter.

"Both." you whisper with a smile and Felix presses his lips on yours gently.

Your eyes flutter shut as you stay still for a few moments before both of you lean away sheepishly.

"You know..." you start and Felix looks at you expectantly.

"I would've said yes even if the cookies were burnt or crumbling into pieces." you say and he blushes, fidgeting with his hands.

"Good to know."

This just came to me bc I've read some Batfam-hallucinating-Jason-post-death fics and I couldn't help but think of how would it work with your neglected!Batsis series. I've also been binge-reading some Batfam stuff and rereading Undoing Fate (and a lil bit of your Batfam Febuarary bc help your writing is contagious aaaa), and I can't help but think of a lil prompt: Hallucination!Batsis. Have some rants about my fav Sonic ships

Trust me when I say this is not what I intended to do for Valentine's day, but my access to the proper materials for my next big project is currently fairly limited, so instead have this (I didn't think I had so much to say I got a bit carried away 👉👈). This is heavy with aro/ace/aroace discourse because as an aroace myself I cannot help it, and huh, reminder that this is just for fun and everyone's opinions are accepted around here as long as it's respectful :3

Espilver is so wholesome I am willing to temporaly remove the aromantic label I put on both these guys. And when an aroace person is ready to drop this label for a ship you know it has to be good. (They're still both asexual idc tho)

I am prone to shipping Sonic with pretty much everyone (elligible for that at least) while thinking he's the biggest aroace mood ever (but I know I am not alone on that one)

Since I've started posting Sonic fanart, there has not been a SINGLE sonadow ship art, but I still really love this ship. Like it's mostly what got me into Sonic in the first place but I don't want to draw it (honestly I think my mind is just drawn to less popular things, I mean sonadow is already everywhere on my dashboard)

Because (except for espilver) my top ships are sonjet and surgamy, I'm basically shipping your two main hedgehogs who are sometimes implied to have feelings for eachother in a gay relationship with a green person with spiky hair and an attitude, and I thought it was funny because it was NOT on purpose xD

Speaking of sonjet I have like three different timelines existing in my mind with this, because I love the "they never dated but they are definitely exes now"/"they tried smt some time ago it didn't work out" narrative, but also the one where Sonic can be the perfect boyfriend and respond to Jet's needs and issues I imagined for him, and also the one where Jet is a total girlfailure of a man who tries to rizz up someone who has zero clue.

I have thought over and over about Blaze ships and my mind just blocks it. At first I thought it was just Silvaze because I was overprotective of my Silver's orientation (when I first saw it I thought "yeah he's aroace", and I'm not a fan of shipping a guy and a girl just because they interact with eachother and are close). But it's everything. Sonaze? I mean she blushed around him on several occasions, so what? I feel like she's just not used to social interaction. Blazamy? I see the fluff, I see the awesome lesbian couple (and I'm an Utena fan, I gotta love the pink/purple yuri), but it doesn't light up anything in me. Are they any other Blaze ships? Idk, but I can't see her with anyone romantically. Never has a character given me so much aroace vibes that the very forces of nature are preventing me to ship her.

Vectilla activates my brain chemistry like crazy. TF you mean the only "sega-approved" ship is between two grown ass people who are not even part of the main character group? And one is a single mother too? Like it's very simple but it's already a norm breaker in my opinion. Though usually a bunch of male characters have their own personally-crafted love interest, they fall in love for no reason and the love is immediately reciprocal because of course it is (*cough* looking at you ninjago). I think it also work because both Vector and Vanilla have their own things going on, and the romance is just a nice plus. And since Team Chaotix is already the peak of Sonic found family, it's also cool to think about the shenanigans with the children (aka Espio, Cream and Charmy). I am a strong Vectilla shipper and I will make you care about them >:)

Lizzie spends her "good days" pretending that she's still home, indulging in a delusion. She mostly hangs out with Joel and Jimmy, or she sits in the Practice Room doing various activities (The Practice Room is a space where subjects can exercise their various skills to make sure they don't get worse from underuse. They have things like workout equipment, cooking equipment, artisan equipment, and computers) She has memory problems, and has introduced herself to subjects several times in one day before. The only people she seems to remember are people that she knew before she came to the lab (Joel and Jimmy were the closest to her, but she also knew Scott and Oli)

On the "bad days" she's more self aware. She lays around in Joel's bed, or clings to him. She talks about how much she missed him while he was gone. She talks about how she wants to go home. She misses Meri. She's sorry she let the Watchers take her wedding ring (it was taken from her forcefully. She didn't have a choice)

Lizzie is not often rented out, but when she is, she tends to be very compliant. The Watchers have sometimes bribed her with permission to redye her hair, and that's enough to get her to do almost anything.

Her favorite renter is a man in a city about an hour away who likes the way she paints. He is in charge of keeping uptown clean and pretty, and he has her paint these massive murals across buildings and walls. These murals take several days to do, and he buys a hotel room for a week. According to the Watcher's policy, none of the subjects can be left alone for extended periods of time, so he stays in the room with her. Every few months he will rent her again and have her paint something new. Lizzie spends those weeks painting outside, and it's enjoyable. It's an escape. The Watchers can taste the dread on her when she eventually has to return.

But not everyone is that nice.

Some people take her to hotel rooms for other reasons. She has no wedding ring and she's too small to fight back. What can she do?

When she comes back to the facility, crying, Joel takes her silently to his room, red rage for the Watchers burning in his eyes. He lays helps her on his bed, and he works her into a clean new change of clothes. He gets an ice pack from the kitchen, presses it carefully against the red marks on her neck and chest. Eventually they subside.

She clings to his shirt, sobbing apologies, as though any of this was her fault.

She calls it cheating.

Joel calls it assault.

Gem is no stranger to comforting Lizzie. She's been in that place too. Not everyone is kind, she knows first hand.

"It's not your fault. You couldn't have stopped it. You didn't deserve it." She repeats as she soothes Lizzie. She is reminding both of them.

(oh, it seems I've word-vomited all over my post, oops. I didn't mean for it to be this long, but honestly I've been thinking about this for a while. Got this ask just a little bit before I posted that Capril post so I suppose that answers your question about Casey and April lmao. At first they don't get along, basically exactly how it is in canon, until after season two which is when they start getting to know each other properly and then get all gay for each other lol.

Donnie thinks Casey is very very (that's two verys) annoying. She's loud, impulsive and way too hot-headed. Casey thinks Donnie is annoying cause he's a condescending know-it-all who is also way too hot-headed. Needless to say, they fight a lot XD. They start getting along better eventually and honestly become very close friends, but they still bicker all the time, that's just their dynamic now.

Mikey initially hates Casey purely because she's human and he thinks she's a bad influence on Raph (which maybe she is a little bit sometimes lmao let's be real) but he starts liking her more after he let's go of the whole hating-all-humans thing. I'm not 100% sure what Mikey's or Leo's dynamic with Casey looks like after they all start getting along better honestly. I think they both like Casey's craziness in limited amounts, but can quickly grow tired of it too. They do eventually both befriend her, but they're not as close to her as Raph is.

Casey's dynamic with Splinter is basically the same as what we see in canon honestly. With Draxum however it's different, they kinda bonded a bit in canon when Drax was working with The Foot, but Raph kinda steals that role in the AU so Draxum and Casey never really interacted much, if at all. After Raph and Casey starts to properly hang out as friends around season 2, then I'd imagine he gets to know her a bit better. Similarly to Mikey, he kinda views her as a bad influnence, but eventually starts appreciating her and Raph's friendship.

Then we get to Junior! In the bad timeline, while Casey does still die before CJ is sent back in time, she survives quite a long time. I'm thinking she dies when CJ is around 15-16 or something? A few years before the resistance falls but she's around for most of CJ's childhood. Which you know, it's nice for CJ to have his mom around, until she dies, and because she's been such a big part of his life before then her death arguably effects him more. By the time CJ travels back to the past, he's had a few years to deal with his mom's death, but by "dealing" with it I mean he's mostly been ignoring his grief cuz he straight up didn't have time for all that in the middle of the apocalypse. So when he ends up meeting the present timeline's Casey it's uh, it's a lot, and he's suddenly forced to confront all of that unresolved grief. I still need to figure out more of the details of exactly what their dynamic looks like, but needless to say is that CJ acts VERY awkwardly around Casey in the present timeline initially cuz that's just straight up his dead mom but also she's his age and also doesn't know him and it's weird XD I will say though, as soon as Casey figured out who CJ is she immidietly goes "FUCK YEAH that's my SON" so there's that

When do you think choreman started becoming friends?

Define friends, lol.

Maybe S7? It's surprisingly hard to say.

Foreman openly and loudly dislikes Chase for the first three seasons, and makes no secret of it: he thinks Chase should lose his job in Control even before Chase goes to Vogler, and later backs it up to House, he tells Chase in S3 that he doesn't like him, and Chase tells a patient in S1 that Foreman hates him. They have some moments of coworker friendliness (teasing Cameron together, mostly; there's some off-screen sharing of gossip back and forth), but there's absolutely no indication they like one another or even respect one another much. We even see them both try and reach out to the other (Foreman to Chase in Socratic Method, Chase to Foreman in House Training and Family), and these efforts be summarily rebuffed.

It's useful to compare their relationships to Cameron to see what I mean: Foreman and Chase are just fine at pretending to get along for the sake of their jobs, but that's baseline coworker stuff. By contrast we see Foreman repeatedly engage Cameron in philosophical debates he really seems to enjoy; he gets a bit protective of her about her crush on House; they have several real, sincere conversations — his calling her out about her commitment issues in Insensitive, for example, is very much Foreman being sincere with her and kind. He apologizes for being a jerk. He tries to frame his critique as a good thing.

The same goes for Cameron and Chase. She talks to him about her crush on House, apparently in some detail; he's the first one she tells, and is already in the loop when Cameron starts pushing her feelings. They're also quick to defend one another, professionally and over personal issues, and, while their eventual relationship kind of obscures their "friendship," they always spend time together, there's entire episodes where Chase is just found in the ER: they clearly enjoy one another's company.

Another thing I find interesting (we'll return to Choreman in a second, I promise) is a throwaway line of Thirteen's in S7. Finding out House said she was in rehab, she complains it really limits her social options with the guys. In particular, she complains, without being able to go out drinking, she and Chase will no longer be friends. Obviously she is joking, but Thirteen is also implying she and Chase do go out drinking sometimes. Nice for them. Not all that deep. More than Choreman ever gets. Sure, we see in S1 they go out for a hosted dinner and drinks… but Cameron is there. We never, ever hear of the two of them hanging out as friends.

This trend continues through S4-5: Foreman has a brief stint in S4 convinced Chase is wildly jealous of him and running the firing betting pool as some sort of revenge plan, which is a) funny as hell and b) still not friends. S6, Foreman hires Cameron and Chase back on the basis of I know I can work with you, not friendship; he fumbles the ball pretty fucking hard with Chase post-divorce, and is no more successful (arguably less) at reaching out to him than any of the others. He takes no interest in Chase's obvious depression except to tell him to get over it. S7, they continue to clash: Chase seems to develop a new hobby of trolling Foreman on purpose, which he's actually been doing since S1 and is quite good at. There's no indications the two kept in touch during the S8 gap, and when they have a personal conversation at the end episode five, the most we get is Foreman calling Chase "one of my best doctors," which is so funny, I love that he can't even compliment Chase without making it a compliment towards himself first.

I sound like I'm focusing more on Foreman here, like I think Foreman hates Chase and Chase is innocent. I actually don't think Chase likes Foreman any more than the reverse! It's just that Chase is a more passive person by nature. He's not as overt with his disrespect, because that's just not his style. But we see that as late as S7, Chase really doesn't respect Foreman much: he calls him out pretty thoroughly in Massage Therapy, and generally delights in undermining Foreman's authority.

For another tangent, let's look at Taubman. I wouldn't say the two particularly get along in S4-6; they have a similar we're coworkers vibe, and that's perfectly fine. But by S7, we really see them become friends. It isn't subtle. Taub and Foreman like one another a lot. They are good friends, unlikely as it seems. They enjoy living together and playing video games and spending time. Just like the earlier Cameron examples, there is none of this from Chase and Foreman. We never hear about them hanging out without a buffer.

I said I thought S7 was the turning point. I was kind of lying, because there's not really any moment or evidence for this. But it's also true that after a while, Foreman lays off the animosity and stops blaming Chase for every error or conspiracy against him. Interestingly, they still never get any "bonding moments:" we see, say, Chase and Thirteen get a whole half episode in After Hours, and a friendship subplot in Now What and Private Lives; Foreman and Taub get a whole lot of bonding in Lockdown but also S7 generally. Foreman and Thirteen get subplot episodes; Chase and Wilson even get one in Private Lives. Chase and Foreman have the occasional shared subplot (Changes), but the focus on those is always them at odds or not getting along, not bonding. Did they ever become friends?

I think they respect one another. I think they have the sort of bond that comes of 8 years in the trenches of an incredibly difficult and demanding job. I also know they blatantly don't care about the things important to the other (Big Baby is a very funny and unsubtle example, where Foreman is worried as hell about Thirteen's drug trial, Chase is very interested in his relationship with Cameron, and neither could care less about the other's issues), don't socialize outside work unless there's a buffer, and continue to pretty fundamentally misunderstand one another for years of the show.

I know you're reading this and thinking "what about Dibala?" And I'm going to give my hot take here: I really don't think it was a huge gesture of friendship and love and trust. If anything, kind of the opposite.

Chase spends most of the Dibala arc pushing Foreman pretty hard to let him get away with it. You have to figure this out, you have to speak before the M&M, you have to lie. He drags Foreman way deeper into the coverup instead of taking any responsibility (or any active role in it — Chase does try, but he's not very good at it, and the burden lies mostly on Foreman's shoulders). Chase also lowkey throws Foreman under the bus for his marriage, using Foreman as an excuse to Cameron for why he's avoiding her, can't talk to her, etc: he also guilts Foreman into helping in The Tyrant.

Foreman helping anyway was a very kind thing to do, but I don't know how much choice he had. He was the one who signed off on treatment and charts. He was running the case. If Chase goes down, he's going down too: maybe Foreman doesn't go to jail for murder, but he absolutely loses his job and license. The episode is actually fairly quiet on what, if anything, Foreman believes about Dibala: where Cameron and Chase spend the whole thing debating morality, we don't really know if Foreman thought killing him was right or not. But by protecting Chase, he protected his career and ambitions… and, to be frank, if I'm Foreman and I think Chase is a lazy coward without morals already, I am not convinced Chase wouldn't try to pin the murder on me if I didn't help. Was helping Chase get away with murder still an altruistic (for a very given definition) thing to do? Sure. But it wasn't selfless. It wasn't love.

So when did Choreman become friends?

I don't know. Define friends.

Min nodded back at her friends who gave her thumbs up as she went over to you with a box of chocolates behind her back

"H-hey y/n what's up?"

"Hi min, everything's great......."

You tilted your head noticing that she was sweating bullets

"Wanna talk to me?"

"Oh really? What is it?"

"D-do you.........do you......."

Min suddenly pulled out the box of chocolates she was holding and looked down scared to see your reaction

"Do you wanna be my valentine?"

"S-so you like me?"

"I think like isn't strong enough"

Min's pale skin became almost completely red at your request, but she still gave you a silent nod to make you understand she agreed.

You used your hand to lift min's bangs away from her face and were met with her beautiful purple eyes

Min blushed even more as you retracted your hand and wrapped it around the box of chocolates again

"So now we are officially a couple, do you mind going on our first date today? I bet they do some cool stuff for valentine's day around town"

You once again got closer to the student and kissed her cheek, making her explode into an even redder color than earlier, before turning around and waving at her

XAVIER

Okay the love I have for Xavier is all Madi and Rori's fault, we'll start there and it only grows with his recent branch story. I was going to bite through solid steel when he actually started to open up! He's good! I love him!

Initially he was someone I struggled with. Him, Rafayel, and Caleb are characters I see having their feelings deeply linked to MC that it was hard to envision a relationship with anyone who wasn't MC for them, but it's starting to come into focus.

A lot of it has to do with Oliver's admiration for Xavier, initially as a very accomplished, but subdued Hunter. Does Xavier know how effortlessly cool he comes off as? Like he's out here doing insane missions, cutting down Wanderers with ease, Ollie is a little starstruck, yet he's been nothing but nice to Oliver. Distant, but nice.

This might be the calmest of the ships to start with until Oliver starts to notice bits of Xavier's stories don't match up and hey, wasn't that a photo of him? It was from 20 years ago, how is that possible? Suddenly Oliver is neck deep in another mystery and his infatuation is broken because he doesn't know who exactly he's talking to.

If Xavier trusts him enough to open up, they can start to mend their relationship and Oliver would fall hard. How could he not? Xavier's got a good sense of humor, they share a lot of common interests, he makes Oliver feel special, and Oliver is also just a big gay dork who wants nothing more than a sweet boyfriend to help look after him. Xavier's like a warm security blanket.

Of course, Xavier might be astonished by the sheer amount of trouble Oliver is in and he might become immensely protective of him, but hey, Oliver can sleep at night a bit better. Ever's going to have a very hard time touching a single hair on Oliver's head with Xavier there.

I also know this is a couple where the afternoon after-work nap is sacred. They've yet to miss a single session. They're cute! They're like an unspoken favorite of mine. <3

RAFAYEL

Woof. Rafayel is on a mission to eliminate folks who hurt Lemurians, Oliver is in the nexus of both having hurt a Lemurian and also having saved a Lemurian, so there are complicated feelings there. I was talking with Rori about a comic idea touching upon this. I have 0 drive to get it started, so let me post the outline here so you can kind of grock where I was going.

Text is available upon request. (I know it says Haydes, I use Oliver here for clarity so Oliver is the muse, Haydes is the mun, I use both names. It's complicated, I know)

So yeah on the surface, it can be very cutesy. Both are the type to tease each other and to have fun being little drama queens to each other, but Rafayel has a lot of complex emotions towards Oliver and once Oliver knows who Rafayel is, he is going to feel a bit out of sorts. Not quite betrayed as he knows why Rafayel would keep that hidden but more as a "Oh god, I don't know what to do with this information and I'm so sorry about my involvement with hurting someone you care about".

If they can work past it, that's a bond stronger than steel and Oliver could learn a lot about survival and working under the table from Rafayel. Ultimate spy couple truly. Otherwise, it's a romance that is doomed for tragedy. Rafayel likely really did love Oliver, but he can't stop his goals part way. He'll be taking that heart, dearest, and I don't think Oliver would refuse him.

However, it's the universes where Rafayel and Oliver work together that interest me. They would be the type of folks who are overlooked together. An eccentric artists picks up a weird hunter, yeah that's usually how these things go. Oliver is Rafayel's more buff arm candy to keep him company at these long galleries Thomas has put together. They work in tandem, so don't mind them when they're in place they shouldn't be. When they know a little too much about you. When they're sticking the knife to you. Everything is exactly as it should be.

ZAYNE

Originally Oliver was written with Zayne in mind which is why their stories echo each other in a way.

Both ended up generating research that they ultimately destroyed because the implications of the results were troublesome. However, Zayne had much more stable backing and was able to leave and resume his life as a cardiac surgeon. Of course, there are consequences now with Carter hounding him, and there are the lingering consequences, like his trauma with killing William.

Oliver is more complex because he is more entrenched in Ever. His backstabbing was more direct and his consequences are more severe. It caused him to have to uproot his life and stay on the run. As a result, Oliver is a very paranoid man, but it also gave him a goal to work towards of trying to destroy Ever. It is an impossible goal solo, so he's learn how to ally himself with more powerful structures to try and achieve that goal, hence him becoming a hunter to get in with the Association.

At first, of course, their meeting and their relationship is that of a patient and a doctor. Oliver's Evol is suspected to be causing him heart issues, but it more likely the man is so stressed it's making his heart freak out. Eventually Zayne would be tipped off to this and he has to ask himself why?

Zayne is not a snooping man, but he knows when there is greater trouble than what he can see on the surface, so he would eventually dig his way in, which would freak Oliver out because hey! Zayne is nice! He's cute! But people who get too close have a habit of winding up dead, so maybe step back a bit.

Zayne doesn't listen to that kind of warning and once he gets the whole picture, he grows protective of Oliver. He won't do anything rash, he knows he cannot stop Oliver because he is right that if he stops he may very well be a dead man, but he can at least cover for him and provide him sanctuary. He agrees with his goals and wants to make sure Oliver can finally breathe.

Zayne, ultimately, is a safe haven for Oliver. Here, he doesn't have to perform. He doesn't have to be brave, he can just be Ollie in the purest sense. In return, Oliver helps Zayne explore new things, new worlds around Linkon. Not all of them are Zayne's thing, but he has a greater perspective on the art and music scene in Linkon. He also finds himself trying new things that he never would have guessed he liked, such as his new hair cut. It's nice to have someone who knows how to push you just right!

SYLUS

Oliver would hate that he's fallen for someone like Sylus, and yet it works so well.

Listen, Sylus is a new pathway for Oliver. He is someone who is very stuck in his morals and what he views as right versus wrong, Sylus doesn't work within that paradigm. He exists outside of the law and he does work that Oliver ultimately would consider good, just perhaps the wrong way to go about it.

The biggest thing though is that Oliver already has a foot in that door, whether he views it that way or not. He works with folks in the Nest when necessary to get information, he steals, he lies, he does things he would normally consider to be "bad" actions because the end justifies the means. He can be forgiven for these actions because ultimately Ever shouldn't exist and be allowed to hurt people and if he eliminates Ever, then it was all worth it.

Sylus is someone who can directly challenge that notion and get Oliver to relent and in a way even forgive himself now. He also is a deeply powerful man who has more means of challenging Ever directly, a contact that Oliver really needs.

And then there is the fact that Sylus is smooth, he's charming, he knows exactly what Oliver desires. Sylus likes a lot of the same things that Oliver does. He is the perfect man to orchestrate Oliver's downfall here. He's going to be lying awake in his bed looking at gifts that Sylus gave him and realize that not only is he ready to break away from life in Linkon for this man, but that he actually likes if not loves Sylus.

It's messy and I fucking love it.

CALEB

Asking about the guy I'm currently super unwell about is such a dangerous game, I hope you understand you're getting an essay here.

Okay so like, no matter what, there is no way Oliver has any chance of knowing Caleb prior to him being Colonel. He's not MC but make her trans (though believe me, I have thought about this as an AU for Oliver and I have so many brainworms on that too), so he didn't grow up with Caleb. This actually makes it very difficult for him to have a good in with Caleb.

Difficult, but not impossible.

The way I see it, Oliver at this point is likely to go rogue if we follow the in game story. He's going to quickly come to terms with the fact that the Association is not going to be able to make any direct moves against Ever and now he's starting to hit walls and that makes him nervous, so he's going to start making more desperate moves and associate himself with shadier and shadier people to get things does - again, while Oliver is very strict with his morals, he's an "ends justify the means" kind of guy.

Viper has already shown his hand in game as someone who is willing to double deal, so he makes a very lovely in for Oliver to start getting information on Ever. Some legit, some... not so much. His snooping will eventually catch the eyes of one Colonel who is definitely not going to take kindly to someone playing spy directly under his nose. (You can see this idea kind of playing out with the rp I had planned with apple-caleb).

Now, based off my read of the situation, I see Caleb as someone who is still resisting Ever, albeit in a more subdued way. They have him on a leash, there is only so much he can do and most of his actions revolve around keeping MC away from Ever's hands. This means Caleb and Oliver are more or less on the same side.

I think Caleb would see Oliver as someone who is trying too hard and is going to get himself killed. He may push him away, try to convince him to go a different route, but Oliver isn't going to stop because he doesn't want to wind up dead because, well, he's in too deep. If he shares what he knows, he's a dead man and he can't stay quiet. That's just not who he is.

Now here is where I'm going to be jumping off of the deep end and I apologize in advanced because there are two ways I can see this playing out and it really depends on how I read Caleb and how he views gender specifically.

If we view him as someone who buys more heavily into gender roles, then he doesn't need to protect Oliver. He's a man, he can stand on his own two feet, so it's more working together and finding convenient ins to let Oliver sabotage work here and there and find ways to get to higher members of Ever. Very high risk, Caleb is much colder here, but he still looks out for Oliver. This is a much more comradery based relationship and I'd argue this one is probably more platonic than romantic because well, I mean Caleb's not gonna let MC go and Oliver has 0 chance with him and he can accept that.

Now, if we go with more of Caleb viewing himself as a sole protector for those he grows to care about, then Oliver is going to find himself in similar situations to MC where Caleb's going to do whatever he can to get Oliver out of trouble. He doesn't need to be in this fight, he doesn't need to risk his neck, everyone he knew from his time with Ever is gone and he'll only lose so much more if he keeps going. He needs to keep Oliver safe, he needs to lock him away, too so he doesn't get himself killed, if he would just let Caleb look after him, everything would be fine, right? This is more romantic but watch out!

In short, I've become deeply unwell about Caleb and have thought about this in great length. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

The Many Illustrators of A Tale of Two Cities 7: A. A. Dixon

"'Collins' Clear-Type Press, let me ask you a question.'"

This is a very long post.

This week's edition has, in my research, become quite the edition.

Sadly, this image is the best source for the cover wrapper illustration that I could find.

You are likely familiar with Arthur Augustus Dixon's illustrations for the 1905 Collins Pocket Edition of A Tale of Two Cities. Several of them are very common to find in Internet searches and articles about the book, if not other editions of the book itself.

But the question raised by my research for this week's edition is: Are you familiar with all of them?

Thing is, as the source above states (read the whole article if you have the time, it's very interesting!), Dixon created twelve illustrations for this novel.

And sure enough, this source from the Internet Archive and this source from @oldillustrations (hello!) both have eleven of the same illustrations - with the twelfth presumably being for the wrapper, as seen in this source (previously cited) from the Victorian Web.

Alright, so that's three separate sources, all with (effectively) the same set of elaborate illustrations from 1905. Neat!

...

...but if you start counting...

...you'll notice that this seems...

...like a lot more than twelve!

Basically, there are five illustrations by A. A. Dixon that are completely unaccounted for in any of the three sources previously cited.

For the purposes of this post, the cover wrapper is considered #0 and is not pictured in these banners.

In full-size set of illustrations in this post, this source from Google Books is the source of four of those mystery illustrations:

#3: "'He stared at her with a fearful look.'" #6: "'Drive him fast to his tomb.'" #7: "He said, 'Farewell!'" #12: "'She appeared with folded arms.'" #9 ("'Patriots and friends, we are ready!'") and #11 ("'You are consigned to La Force.'") are sourced from Google Books in the full-size versions in this post simply because the Internet Archive versions of those two illustrations had cropping issues.

To me, this is mystery enough on its own. Why would another version of the book suddenly have more than the originally-stated number of illustrations by this artist? Especially considering that the Google Books source does not have #13 ("''I know you, Evremonde!''") - why would it be missing one of the "main" set?

It gets even more interesting.

As you'll notice in the banner, we're still one off: Keen-eyed observers of the full-size set of illustrations might have already noticed that #14 ("'Carton and the spy returned.'") looks a bit different than the rest of them - a bit like what happened in the previous edition of this series!

That's because that Dixon illustration comes from this completely random source - a post from a blog called the Paperback Palette dating back to 2018 - that I happened across on Google Images of all places while sitting on an airplane trying to set up this post last week!

And to top it all off, that source is missing #6!

At this point, if your first instinct is, reasonably, that perhaps Dixon didn't actually illustrate these extra five and that it was someone imitating him for later editions, then know that that was my instinct too - until I (dare I say it again) checked those signatures!!!

(I edited the colors to prevent flashing.)

All five of those illustrations bear Dixon's signature, so it's safe to assume that they are A. A. Dixon originals - from 1905, even.

Interestingly, #s 1, 10, 13, 15, and 16 don't have signatures! Does this mean anything? Probably not - as an artist myself, I often forget to put my own signature - but still, I can't resist mentioning it!

So the most likely explanation here is simply that the publishing house originally commissioned A. A. Dixon for more than twelve illustrations and then held on to some of them, eventually choosing to publish them in other editions. Still, we can't say for sure.

And as to why some are missing from the more "complete" sets - human error, most likely!

If you scrub through the Google Books source, you'll notice that #s 11 and 12 actually repeat (one even changes color, which I have no explanation for) - it's most likely either that the book was accidentally printed with repeats of #s 11 and 12 where 13 and 14 were supposed to go or that the person scanning this edition made a similar error.

As an aside, it's so interesting that the illustrations are evenly spaced throughout the book - I had not noticed that until now!

And as for the Paperback Palette source, it's most likely that the blogger accidentally skipped over an image while combing through their edition or just glossed over it when posting the batch (I understand that from experience!) We can see this by adding up the letters in some of the illustrations' captions - doing so reveals that the letters are meant to go to P, the sixteenth letter of the alphabet.

Thus, one must be missing! Case closed!

Except... It's actually (going by both the chronology of the book and the order in which this set was found in Google Books) missing the wrong letter! Here, it seems that In the Google Books source, #7 in the full set is given the seventh letter in the alphabet, G - whereas in the Paperback Palette source, "#7" is labeled as the sixth, F:

This implies not only that #6 is absent from the Paperback Palette source but also that there is a missing mystery illustration located between this source's H and K - that is to say, before or after #9!

EXCEPT... For one, this isn't the only inconsistency I've noticed - there are several places where the letters seem shifted in a strange way. I've seen #2 listed as "C" and #9 listed both as "H" and "I2i" (???), just as two examples. (My theory is that the cover wrapper and the frontispiece may be at play here, but who knows?)

More importantly, though, it seems that, for some mysterious reason, all of the sources with relatively consistent use of these letters (i.e. all but the Victorian Web) - even the sources with only eleven interior illustrations - still give #15 in the full set the fifteenth letter, O. Which, of course, may make all of this pretty moot anyway.

Dare I say..."Oh."

Suffice it to say, just as much as major sources like the Internet Archive and Google Books are vital to this sort of research and preservation work, so are smaller websites and bloggers! After all, without the Victorian Web and the Paperback Palette, we as collective netizens likely wouldn't have ever known about the cover wrapper or illustration #14 (not to mention that the versions of the illustrations from the set posted by @oldillustrations have by far the best image quality and standardization that I've found! Please go check them out if you haven't yet!).

As for the reasons behind Collins' Clear-Type Press not publishing all of the illustrations from the beginning (if that's the explanation we're to go with here), I suppose the question I'd like to ask is:

why? why would you put us through this?
