Quirks: Or how not to tokenized your characters
(Disclaimer: this guide doesn't replace research. You still gotta put in the work to portray a culture respectfully and without stereotypes)
When I want to write a character who's from a different background than me (sexuality, gender wise, race, etc) I find that in order to not make that a character a token. I give them two quirks for start, one informed by their identity, but that seems random. And a random one thats actually informed by their identity.
Take my character, Anissa. She's black and Muslim. Moved from the US to the UK for work. OK? I got the foundation. Now let's give her a sorta... strange quirk informed by her background... let's say uhh... she keeps a small bug camera on her shoes.
How's that informed by her background? Well, when she was a kid, she always got her shoes stolen at the mosque by kids who bullied her, and so she started putting sort of prank traps on them and never quite got over that?
That's a good informed quirk cause it tells me something about her (she's kinda distrustful and has baggage from being a bullying survivor) and it's tied to how she was raised, in a Muslim household.
That gives me three character building stuff I can work from:
Backstory
Cultural background
Personality
That's good. Now, for a random, that a first glance seems identity influenced. She wears a black hijab. Cause of her religion? Sure, that's a part of it, she's quite devoted. But her family is rather reformist... but they're also kinda boring. So Anissa has this punk vibe going on: ⬇️
Tumblr media
. And she's much more alternative than say, her twin sister, Aisha. Who's always been the golden child. Dressing punk rock is her way of standing out. Again with the three major pillars of a character: Backstory, Personality and Cultural background.
Is this an infallible rule? Nah, I'm just some guy. But like... it kinda works. You know how having a prompt to limit you makes creativity flow better? Well, having a quirk to limit you makes it easier to build a backstory. At least for me.

🌙 Good morning, bookish bats, and Eid Mubarak to those who are celebrating. Eid al-Fitr ("the feast of breaking the fast") marks the end of Ramadan, an Islamic holy month of fasting and sacrifice. [ 📹 Scenes from the massive destruction left behind after Zionist air forces bombed a residential home belonging to the Issa family northeast of Rafah City, in the southern Gaza Strip, killing and wounding a number of Palestinian civilians.]
🇮🇱⚔️🇵🇸 🚀🏘️💥🚑 🚨
THE ZIONIST ENTITY CONTINUES MASS SLAUGHTER OF PALESTINIAN CIVILIANS IN THE GAZA STRIP ON DAY 166
On the 166th day of Israel's ongoing war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) committed a total of 10 new massacres of Palestinian families, resulting in the deaths of 104 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and wounding another 162 others over the previous 24-hours.
Zionist forces continued launching multitudes of air raids targeting various Palestinian residential buildings, homes, workplaces and vehicles across the entirety of the Gaza Strip.
Zionist occupation air forces repeatedly bombarded Gaza City overnight, and again beginning at dawn, targeting the Al-Rimal neighborhood in particular, west of Gaza City, especially in the vicinity of Al-Shifa Hospital as the IOF siege of the medical complex continues with mass arrests.
Similarly, according to Palestinian news agency WAFA, a "large number of families are besieged," in the Al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, while undergoing "tragic circumstances" as the Israeli occupation army continues bombing the neighborhood around them.
Local medical sources told the Palestinian news agency that the Israeli occupation has removed patients from Al-Shifa Hospital, at least some of whom were transferred to the Baptist Hospital under "difficult health conditions."
According to both Palestinian and Zionist media, more than 50 Palestinians have been killed during ground operations at Al-Shifa medical complex, while between 200 and 300 others have been kidnapped or detained by the Israeli occupation army. Hundreds more patients and displaced civilians, many of whom had been sheltering in the hospital, have been forced out into the streets as occupation bombing and shelling continues around them.
This isn't the first time Al-Shifa has been raided since the beginning of the genocide. Previously, IOF soldiers stormed the hospital; killing, wounding and detaining hundreds of Palestinians in a siege that began on November 15th, 2023. Several instances of torture during interrogations were also recorded during the previous raid.
As the siege of Al-Shifa continued, Israeli fighter jets bombed the surrounding neighborhood, including the bombing of two residential homes near the medical complex, one of which belonged to the Aisha family and the other belonging to the Hamouda family, killing dozens of civilians and leaving large numbers of victims buried under the debris and rubble that are all that's left of the two buildings.
At the same time, IOF warplanes bombed several residential buildings on the outskirts of the Al-Shati Refugee Camp, located just west of Jabalia, north of Gaza City, killing a number of civilians and severely wounding several others.
Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation army fired several missiles targeting residential buildings in the Al-Sidra and Al-Daraj neighborhoods, west and east of Gaza City respectively, killing at least 20 Palestinians and wounding a number of others.
Zionist artillery forces also bombarded residential apartments in the Mushtaha building, opposite the Shawa Hosari Tower in Gaza City.
As if the wholesale slaughter of Palestinian across Gaza weren't enough, occupation aircraft launched a series of firebelts targeting the Al-Kanz Mosque square, also in Gaza City, demolishing several homes and martyring at least 10 civilians belonging to the Al-Badda family. The attacks wounded multiple others as well.
Elsewhere in the Gaza Strip, the death toll from last night's Zionist occupation bombing of a residential building in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp, in the central Gaza Strip, belonging to the Al-Habbash family, has risen to 27. The majority of the victims were displaced families that had been taking shelter from Israel's bombing and shelling of the surrounding neighborhood.
In a previous attack, occupation aircraft bombed a vehicle in front of UNRWA headquarters in the Nuseirat Camp, killing five Palestinians, including local police official, Mahmoud Al-Bayoumi, and wounding a number of others.
Simultaneously, occupation aircraft also bombarded a residential house in the Al-Bureij Refugee Camp, also in the central Gaza Strip, killing at least six civilians as the slaughter goes on seemingly endlessly.
The Israeli occupation army also fought fierce clashes with local Resistance forces in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, with intense exchanges of gunfire between the Resistance and Zionist military vehicles, killing and wounding a number of civilians who were caught in the crossfire.
The Israeli occupation forces also bombarded local tribal committees organizing the distribution of humanitarian aid near the Dawla roundabout, south of Gaza City, with Zionist fighter jets and artillery shelling killing at least 24 civilians and wounding several others.
Local ambulance and civil defense crews in Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip, also managed to recover the bodies of five citizens from neighborhoods previously occupied by Zionist forces.
As a result of Israel's ongoing war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the infinitely rising death toll has now exceeded 31'923 Palestinians martyred, more than 25'000 of which being women and children according to the United States Pentagon, with another 74'096 civilians wounded since the beginning of the current round of Israeli aggression beginning on October 7th, 2023.

Aisha reported: After the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was miraculously taken by night to the furthest mosque in Jerusalem, the people began to talk about it. Some of them renounced their faith and belief in him. They sought Abu Bakr and they said, “Have you heard that your friend imagined he was taken by night to the sacred house?” Abu Bakr said, “Did he say that?” They said yes. Abu Bakr said, “If he said it, he has spoken the truth.” They said, “Do you believe he went by night to the sacred house and returned before morning?” Abu Bakr said, “Yes. Verily, I believe what is even more astonishing than that. I believe he has received messages from heaven for everything he does.” For this reason, Abu Bakr was named the Truthful, al-Siddiq.

The mosque is located on the southern part of the Temple Mount or Haram al-Sharif, an enclosure expanded by King Herod the Great beginning in 20 BCE during his reconstruction of the Second Jewish Temple. The mosque resides on an artificial platform that is supported by arches constructed by Herod's engineers to overcome the difficult topographic conditions resulting from the southward expansion of the enclosure into the Tyropoeon and Kidron valleys. During the late Second Temple period, the present site of the mosque was occupied by the Royal Stoa, a basilica running the southern wall of the enclosure. The Royal Stoa was destroyed along with the Temple during the siege of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 CE.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Temple
The Temple was on the site of what today is the Dome of the Rock. The gates led out close to Al-Aqsa Mosque (which came much later). Although Jews continued to inhabit the destroyed city, Emperor Hadrian established a new city called Aelia Capitolina. At the end of the Bar Kokhba revolt in 135 CE, many of the Jewish communities were massacred and Jews were banned from living inside Jerusalem. A pagan Roman temple was set up on the former site of Herod's Temple.

You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant.
https://quranx.com/5.64
And the Jews say, "The hand of Allah is chained." Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say. Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills. And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. And We have cast among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindled the fire of war [against you], Allah extinguished it. And they strive throughout the land [causing] corruption, and Allah does not like corrupters.

Narrated `Aisha and `Abdullah bin `Abbas: When the last moment of the life of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came he started putting his 'Khamisa' on his face and when he felt hot and short of breath he took it off his face and said, "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of their Prophets." The Prophet (ﷺ) was warning (Muslims) of what those had done.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

Narrated `Aisha رضی اللہ عنہا :
Abu Bakr رضی اللہ عنہ came riding his horse from his dwelling place in As-Sunh. He got down from it, entered the Mosque and did not speak with anybody till he came to me and went direct to the Prophet, who was covered with a marked blanket. Abu Bakr رضی اللہ عنہ uncovered his face. He knelt down and kissed him and then started weeping and said, "My father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Prophet! Allah will not combine two deaths on you. You have died the death which was written for you." Narrated Abu Salama from Ibn `Abbas رضی اللہ عنہما : Abu Bakr رضی اللہ عنہ came out and `Umar , was addressing the people, and Abu Bakr told him to sit down but `Umar رضی اللہ عنہ refused. Abu Bakr رضی اللہ عنہ again told him to sit down but `Umar رضی اللہ عنہ again refused. Then Abu Bakr رضی اللہ عنہ recited the Tashah-hud (i.e. none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)) and the people attended to Abu Bakr and left `Umar رضی اللہ عنہ . Abu Bakr said رضی اللہ عنہ , "Amma ba'du, whoever amongst you worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever worshipped Allah, Allah is alive and will never die. Allah said: 'Muhammad is no more than an Apostle and indeed (many) Apostles have passed away before him ..(up to the) grateful.' " (3.144) (The narrator added, "By Allah, it was as if the people never knew that Allah had revealed this verse before till Abu Bakr رضی اللہ عنہ recited it and then whoever heard it, started reciting it.")

The Life of The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh): Calling the Tribes to Islam, the Allegiances of Aqaba and Migration to Madinah
Masjid An-Nabawi is Built
(1st year of the Hijrah / AD 622)
When the Honorable Messenger honored Medina with his coming, the city was lacking a place where they could perform salah together, and gather together to discuss their issues. They needed a mosque which would be a center for these important duties.
The first thing the Prophet started in Medina was to build this mosque.
When they entered the city for the first time, the Prophet’s camel kneeled down in a plot where two orphans named Sahl and Suhayl, from the Sons of Najjar tribe, dried dates. These two orphans were under protection of Muadh bin Afra, who was a Medina Muslim. The Honorable Messenger told Hazrat Muadh that he wanted to purchase this plot.
However, this renunciant companion said that he wanted to donate the price of the plot, in order to have this distinct honor, to two orphans under his protection.
However, the Prophet declined it. Then, he sent for the two orphans, who were the owners of the plot, and asked them the price of the plot. Two young orphans said: O Messenger of Allah! We can only ask its price from Allah! We shall give it to you for the sake of Allah!”
The Honorable Messenger did not accept this proposal of the orphans, either and purchased the plot for ten shekels of gold, which was its price. Hazrat Abu Bakr paid this price to them right away as the Honorable Messenger told him to do so.
The plot was cleaned up by self-sacrificing Companions in a short time, and with the order of the Messenger of Allah, adobe bricks were made.
Hazrat Abu Bakr, Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Uthman and Hazrat Ali were present there when the Honorable Messenger was about to lay the foundations of the mosque.
A Muslim who was passing by asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Are there only those few people with you?”
The Prophet said in response: “They are the ones who will manage after me.” Following him, Hazrat Abu Bakr, Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Uthman and Hazrat Ali put down a stone in the base in this order. Therefore, in addition to the foundations of the Masjid an-Nabawi, the foundation of four caliphs era was also laid metaphorically.
The Prophet worked in building of the mosque actively without having a rest. While carrying adobe bricks in his blessed hands, he was also saying the following words, in order to cheer up and encourage Muslims:
This load we are carrying, o Lord!
More decent and purer than Khaibar’s load!
O Lord! Blessings, yet otherworldly blessings!
May Thou mercy the Ansar and immigrants!
Masjid an-Nabawi was built in a short time as a result of non-stop working. This divine temple, which was made of four adobe brick walls, free from all kinds of ornamentation, did not have a roof. Its qiblah was towards Jerusalem, as the Kaaba was not appointed to be the qiblah at that time. It was tetragonal in shape and had three gates and a mihrab. Date tree trunks were put in line in place of mihrab. There was no mimbar. Only was there a date log which the Messenger of Allah leant on while reciting sermons. Later, a mimbar with three steps was built as the Companions wished to do so. Masjid an-Nabawi took its final shape, having gone through restorations at various times.
Masjid an-Nabawi was used not only for collective praying but also for meeting religious needs of Muslim population. Moreover, lessons were taught in the mosque and, messengers and tribe chiefs were received (as it will be seen later) there.
Rooms for the Prophet’s Wives are Built
Two rooms, one for Hazrat Sawda and one for Hazrat Aisha, were built of brick next to Masjid an-Nabawi. The top of the rooms were covered with date logs and branches. Later, more rooms were built when the Prophet married other wives. Four rooms were made of brick and the other five were made of stone. Their roofs were made of date branches.
The Prophet moved into the rooms built next to Masjid an-Nabawi from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari’s house, after they were built.
HANIN AL-JIZZ MIRACLE
Masjid an-Nabawi did not have a mimbar when it was first built. The Honorable Messenger used to lean on a date tree log when he recited a sermon.
This continued for a long time. Later, a mimbar with three steps was built as the companions wanted. From then on, the Prophet started to give talks on this mimbar.
When the Honorable Messenger got on the mimbar for the first time to recite the sermon, a sorrowful sound and crying resembling the crying of a pregnant camel was heard. They looked around but there was neither a pregnant camel nor a camel cub. It was that deadwood crying!
Both the Prophet and his companions heard the log crying like a camel. It would not stop crying. The Prophet climbed down the mimbar and went up to it. When he put his hand on it to console, it stopped. Even the companions who heard the date log crying like a camel could not help but burst into tears.
Yes, the deadwood log was crying because it was away from the Messenger of Allah. It was weeping like a pregnant camel because it was deprived of the dhikr which was said on it.
After consoling the deadwood log, the Honorable Messenger turned to his Companions and said: “If I did not embrace and console it, it would continue crying until the end of time because it was separated from the Messenger of Allah.
The log was buried in a hole dug under the mimbar, by the order of the Honorable Messenger. Later, Ubay bin Ka’b brought it home and kept it until it decayed, when the mosque was pulled down to restore in Hazrat Uthman’s era.
It was a bright miracle of the Messenger of Allah that the dead date log cried before the eyes of the community. Yes, just like the Jinn and the humankind recognize the greatest Prophet, deadwoods too recognize him, know his duty and uphold his cause in their own way.
What did Hassan al-Basri say?
While narrating this miracle to his students, Hazrat Hassan al-Basri used to say in tears:
“Wood shows affection and aspiration for the Honorable Messenger! You are much worthier of showing affection and aspiration for the Messenger!”
Would we not be lower in rank than that deadwood if we the conscious and intelligent beings behaved in a carefree way towards the Prophet while dead, dry woods showed him affection and aspiration?
It is only possible to show him affection and aspiration through abiding by his sunnah.
Another Narration
According to another narration, when the deadwood cried, the Honorable Messenger put his hand on it and said: “I shall send you to the garden where you were before if you like, there you will take root again and refresh with leaves and fruits. And if you like, I shall plant you in Heaven so that dearest slaves of Allah will eat your fruits.
The deadwood said:
“Plant me in Heaven so that Allah’s dearest slaves will eat my fruits. And Heaven is such place that there is no decaying there; let me live forever!”
Upon this, the Honorable Messenger stated that he made its wish come true and then he turned to his Companions and said:
“It preferred the everlasting world to the mortal world!”

THE FEMALE COMPANIONS OF THE PROPHET (PBUH): Part 21
ASMA BINT YAZID (radhiallahu anha)
The era of the Prophet was an era of knowledge. The Companions who were around the sublime Prophet learned many things from the source of knowledge. They asked the Messenger of Allah about the problems they encountered in daily life and asked him various questions. Not only men but also women went into the presence of the Prophet to ask them about their problems. For, they knew that modesty did not prevent learning one’s religion. There was no need to feel ashamed while learning one’s religion.
One of the women who caused many issues, especially those about women, to be clarified was Asma bint Yazid (r.anha). Hz. Asma was a woman of Ansar.
When the Prophet migrated to Madinah, the women of Ansar paid allegiance to him and promised that they would not
“cry out loud as if they were screaming after a dead person, follow a funeral, associate any partners with Allah, steal, commit adultery and kill their children”.
One of those women was Hz. Asma. She kept her promise throughout her life. Like the other female Companions, Asma loved the Messenger of Allah very much, served her and treated her some food whenever she could. She was not rich but she was generous. She took spiritual pleasure when she shared her food and drink with the Messenger of Allah. Once, she saw that the Messenger of Allah was performing the evening prayer at the mosque. She went home. She prepared some bread and raisins. She waited for him outside the mosque and invited him to her house. The Messenger of Allah did not want to break the heart of this self-sacrificing Companions. He went to her house with some Companions. Hz. Asma put the food she had prepared in front of the Messenger of Allah and said,
“O Messenger of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you! Help yourselves.”
The Prophet said to his Companions
“Help yourselves! Bismillah!”
They ate the food. After narrating this incident, Hz. Asma said,
“I swear by Allah, in whose hand is my existence, that I saw with my own eyes. The group of 40 people could not finish the bread or raisins. After eating, they drank water and left. When the people in my family got ill, we would drink the water that was left in the water-skin by the Messenger of Allah and the Companions and got well. Our sustenance increased thanks to it.”( Tabaqat, 8: 319-320. )
Hz. Asma sometimes went to the house of the Prophet and listened to the talk of the Prophet with the other women.
When the Prophet married Hz. Aisha, Hz. Asma was there with some other female Companions. After the Prophet drank some milk, she gave the bowl of milk to Hz. Aisha. She did not want to take it because she was feeling very shy. Thereupon, Hz. Asma said,
“O, Aisha! Do not refuse the offer of the Messenger of Allah. Take it and drink it.”
Hz. Aisha took the bowl drank some milk and gave it back. This time, the Prophet gave the bowl to Hz. Asma. She took it and drank from the milk that the Prophet had left.( Musnad, 6: 458. )
Hz. Asma was distinguished among the female Companions due to her straightforwardness and eloquence.
Therefore, she was known as “the Orator of the Women”. When the women of Madinah wanted to ask the Prophet something and learn from him, they would send her as their representative. She would go to the Prophet and tell the Messenger of Allah clearly about the issue.
Once, the women chose her as their representative and sent her to the Prophet to ask about an issue that occupied their minds.  Hz. Asma appeared before the Prophet; when she was given permission to speak, she said,
“O Messenger of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you!”
After expressing her respect, she spoke as follows:
“I am the representative of some women. There is no doubt that Allah Almighty sent you as His Prophet for all mankind – men, and women. We believe in you and your Lord.  We, women, live within our houses and fulfill the legitimate wishes of our husbands. Men are superior to us in that they perform Friday prayers and attend congregational prayers in the mosques, visit ill people, take part in the janazah prayer and go to hajj many times. The most virtuous of all is taking part in jihad. When men go to hajj, umrah or jihad, we to protect their property, clean and repair their clothes. We look after their children. Are we going to be given the same rewards as men?”
After listening to Asma’s talk, the Prophet appreciated her intelligence and eloquence; he said to the Companions who were there,
“Have you ever heard any women asking a religious question to speak more eloquently than her?”
Then, he gave the following glad tiding to Asma and all believing women:
“Listen and tell the other women whom you are representing! If a woman gets on well with her husband and attains his consent, she receives the same rewards for the deeds that you have listed.”( Usdu'l-Ghaba, 5: 398. )
Hz. Asma left joyfully after the answer of the Prophet. She wanted to give the glad tiding to her friends. She told them what she had heard from the Messenger of Allah. All of the women became very happy when they heard the glad tiding. From then on, they regarded housework as worshipping bringing them rewards not as a burden.
Asma, who sometimes listened to the talks of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) and learned from him, narrated 81 hadiths. One of them is as follows:
“The Prophet said to his Companions, ‘Shall I tell you who are the best ones among people?’ They said, ‘Yes! O Messenger of Allah!’ He said, ‘The ones you see mentioning Allah (dhikr).’ Then, he said, ‘Shall I tell you who are the worst ones among people? They are the ones who drive a wedge between people who gossip and act as talebearers.”( Musnad, 6: 459. )
Another hadith is as follows:
“When Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet, died, the Messenger of Allah wept. Hz. Abu Bakr or Umar said to him, ‘You are indeed the best of those who glorify Allah with what is due to him.’ Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: ‘The eye weeps and the heart grieves, but we do not say anything that angers the Lord. O, Ibrahim! If the death was not something that inevitably comes to all, and that the latter did not join the former, we would be sadder than we are now.’“( Ibn Majah, Janaiz: 53. )
Hz. Asma, who was known for her braveness and heroism along with her intelligence, participated in the Battle of Yarmuk in order to take care of the wounded people and to give the mujahids water. Once, she grabbed a tent pole and went to the battlefield.  She killed nine Byzantine soldiers. ( Hayatu’s-Sahaba, 1: 442. )
It is not known where and when this great Islamic woman, who did not hesitate to sacrifice her life in order to spread Islam and to punish those who wanted to eliminate Islam, died.
May Allah be pleased with her!

What answer should we give to those who say, "Do not think deep; excessiveness in religion will make a person go crazy"?
Unfortunately, the world is like that today. Allah makes this factory of the universe work for us all the time and mobilizes everything for us; therefore, we need to allocate all of our time to Him but we live in an age that regards performing five daily prayers, which hardly lasts an hour every day, extremism. They act as if we will do very important things if we do not perform prayers.
The midway, way of ease, moderate way, the way that can be followed is ordered in our religion. The Prophet (pbuh) said,
“I advise you the midway because the religion will overcome any person who makes tiny distinctions.” 2
As a matter of fact, the following is stated in the Quran:
“We have not sent down the Qur'an to thee to be (an occasion) for thy distress.”3
The following is stated in another verse of the Quran:
“Allah intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties.”4
“On no soul doth Allah place a burden greater than it can bear.”5 Acting upon the verses above, Badiuzzaman Said Nursi attracts attention to the fact that a person cannot be loaded a burden heavier than he can carry in the religion.
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) interprets the verses above with the following hadith:
“Indeed, this religion is easy, and no one will ever overburden himself in religion, except that it will overcome him. So seek what is appropriate, and come as close as you can, and receive the glad tidings (that you will be rewarded), and take it easy; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights.”6
To go to extremes in the religion does not mean to persevere, to live based on taqwa and to live in accordance with the obligations of the religion. To go to extremes in the religionmeans to pay much attention to the orders of the religion that are of less significance and to neglect the orders of the religion that are of great significance by not establishing a balance between the decrees of the religion. It is imbalance. For instance, a person makes a lot of efforts, efforts that are beyond his power, and wearies himself for nafilah (supererogatory) prayers – he becomes too tired due to this extreme meticulousness – and he neglects sunnahs, wajibs and even fards.
In fact, the Prophet (pbuh) worshipped at night until his blessed feet swelled and performed prayers. For instance, once Hz. Aisha asked him, “O Messenger of Allah! Why do you tire yourself so much? Were your previous and future sins not forgiven?” The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “Should I not be a slave that thanks Allah more?”
However, the Prophet (pbuh) performed this worshipping within the boundaries endurance; and this night worshipping never caused him to neglect - God forbid - the morning prayer, his family and the people. Taqwa starts at this point.
If a person who performs a lot of nafilah worshipping at night in order to revive a sunnah becomes very tired and neglects the morning prayer, his wife and children, his guests and his health, he will have gone to extremes and acted contrarily to the Sunnah.
* Hz. Anas narrates:
When the Prophet (pbuh) entered the mosque, he saw a rope stretched between two columns.
“What is this rope?” He asked. The Companions said,
“This rope belongs to Zaynab bint Jahsh. She holds it when she gets tired.”
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
“Remove it. Perform prayers with pleasure. When you get tired, go to bed and sleep.” 7
* Hz. Aisha narrates:
There was a woman I was talking to in my room. When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) entered my room, he asked,
“Who is this?” I said,
“She is such and such a woman.” Then, I started to mention her prayers. Finally, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
“That is enough. Do what you can do. By Allah, Allah Almighty will not be tired of giving you thawabs but you will be tired of worshipping.“ 8
* Hz. Anas narrates:
A group ofthree men asked about the worship of the Prophet (pbuh). When they were informed about it, they considered it little and said: "Where are we in comparison with the Prophet (pbuh) while Allah forgave his past sins and future sins". One of them said,
"I will perform prayers all night long and will not sleep." Another said,
"I will perform fasting continuously and will not break except on days of eid."Another said,
"I will abstain from women and will never marry".
When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) came, he summoned them and said to them,
“Are you the people who said such and such things? By Allah, I fear Allah more than you do, and I am most obedient and dutiful among you to Him, but I sometimes perform fasting and sometimes break it. I both perform prayers and sleep at night. This is my Sunnah. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me.” 10
* Abu Muhammad Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As narrates:
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was informed that I said, “I will perform fasting every day and perform prayers the whole night as long as I live.” He said to me,
"Is it you who said this?" I said to him,
"O Messenger of Allah! That is true." Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
"Do not do that. Observe fasting for few days and then leave off for few days; perform prayers and sleep at night, as your body has a right upon you, and your eyes have a right upon you. Your wife has a right upon you; your visitors have a right upon you. It is sufficient for you to perform fasting three days in a month, as the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times, so it will be like fasting the whole year." I said,
"O Messenger of Allah! I can do more than that." He said,
"Then, perform fasting of Dawud. Do not add more.” I said,
“What is fasting of Dawud?” The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
“Fasting half of the year. You will fast one day and eat the next day.” I said,
“I can do more than that.” The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
“There is no fasting more virtuous than that. The most virtuous fasting is that of Dawud.”
Afterwards when Abdullah grew old, he said, "I wish I had accepted the three-day fasting the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) advised. It would have been lovelier to me than my family and wealth. However, it is too late now." 11
There is no compulsion in the religion. There is moderation, balance and harmony. It is essential to live in the religious balance, not to abandon fards for sunnahs, not to leave wajibs for nafilahs, and to live the religion as a whole based on our strength.
