The Long Good Friday (1980)
"Alan found him dying. He'd been nailed to the floor."
"When was this, then?"
"Well, it must've been just after you saw him and just before Alan saw him. Otherwise, you'd have noticed, wouldn't you? I mean, a geezer nailed to the floor. A man of your education would definitely have spotted that, wouldn't he?"
#the long good friday#british cinema#1980#john mackenzie#barrie keeffe#bob hoskins#helen mirren#derek thompson#eddie constantine#stephen davies#bryan marshall#p.h. moriarty#paul freeman#dave king#patti love#pierce brosnan#brian hall#paul barber#francis monkman#I'm late to this party but hellâ this one deserves its reputation. an incendiaryâ even prophetic film; a perfectly timed capturing of that#moment everything in the uk shifted as Thatcher took powerâ capitalism became truly kingâ and with it came the dawn of the yuppie mindset#the legitimisation of the London underworldâ gentrification and a new age of international aspirations: the USâ Europeâ and the New Britain#desperately shedding its dustyâ working man's image to appear (like Hoskins here) to be civilised and refined and (crucially) a going#concern in economic turns. but underneath it all there's still the razors and the bigotry and corruption. all time Hoskins performance here#giving it everything and absolutely killing it (the final scenes among the best of his impressive career). but there's everyone elseâ too;#every single role seems tonbe a familiar faceâ right down to mute background roles. Keeffe's script is sharp and funny but it's also#unashamedly complex; the plot is labyrinthineâ underneath the simple conceitâ and never feels the need to spoonfeed what's happening and#why. topped off with a great moody synth score that's sparingly but effectively used. happy to say this one lives up to the hype#and Derek Thompsonâ as he so often wasâ is brilliant. between this and his tv work from the era (Harry's Game and The Price especially) he#really had the makings of a true star (but if he was happy in Casualty all those yearsâ so be it)

(modern) prongsfoot!!!
hello! so, this is a multi chapter fic i was really excited about a while ago (started it, got to a few thousand works and then it fizzled out lol the basic premise is this:
muggle AU with single dad James and model Sirius whoâs fed up of his ~meaningless life (feeling someâŚennui, if u will) and ends up taking off to like. a seaside city where he runs into harry and then, james. it was such a fun premise because A. i was writing it to âhave we met beforeâ which is the perfect j/s song, B. i wanted it to be low pressure and chill, a simple meet cute romance type situation.
thereâs also aunt cassiopeia who sirius is temporarily living with and sheâs like this. âspinsterâ whoâs cut off from her family, has a pet cheetah she rescued one time, and has three blades on her at all times. a Character. i love her. she loves james. tries to match make. sirius is so baffled?? because aunty cassie doesnât like anyone??

stonathan - ten (give or take) years of purposefully forgetting the importance of saving phone numbers
stonathan sunday prompt by @stonathanweek | prompt: "what aren't you telling me?" | they're broken up, and it's been a while
"what aren't you telling me?"
jonathan is unamused by the way steve's smile drops from his face.
steve is quiet, arms crossed over the railing in front of jonathan's porch. it's strange, watching him close up after⌠everything. it's almost like watching a balloon pop; the rapid switch from full to empty, the sighing slump of his shoulders, and to jonathan, it's out of character for him.
"you come here, and you refuse to let me close the door in your face." still, jonathan insists on being told the truth. they're older now, they shouldn't be hiding hints and clues in each other's actions anymore. "you say things are 'messed up back home', whatever that means, and you-"
and still, after all these years, jonathan can't ever find it in himself to stay mad at steve, no matter the reason.
"i want to know what's up with you." jonathan's hands, which were raised and moving through each word as he talked, came back down. he crosses his arms too, eyes fixated on his porch light shining on a few strands of gray combed behind steve's ear. it hasn't been that long... has it? "can we just- talk about it?"
there was a point in time where steve was the one begging jonathan to be open, honest, vulnerable, even. as if the two of them thought of it at the same time, they both laugh shortly through their noses. jonathan runs a hand over his hair at how ridiculous this all is. the visit, the cold stare, the passive aggressiveness, the genuine joy he felt seeing steve harrington of all people at his door again. of all the things he missed about hawkins, one of them may or may not be the way steve would show up at his house whenever he wanted, unannounced, as if they had all the time in the world to be together. if they were still together, jonathan would find it romantic or spontaneous, but now he's just concerned.
steve looks back at him through a glance out of the side of his eye, and jonathan almost misses it because of his glasses. steve actually wears his glasses now, what the fuck, how long has it been. then he's shaking his head, as if he can't believe what he's about to say, as if jonathan has any grounds to judge him on.
"it's- i'm just gonna spit it out- it's the upside down again." steve is running a hand over his face, pushing his glasses out of the way, and jonathan's heart drops to the soles of his shoes. "dustin got me hooked on it, honestly, and now it's like- it's getting harder to, y'know, figure all this shit out by myself. kinda by myself, but you know what i meant."
"hooked on⌠what?" jonathan's eyebrows are drawn into a scowl.
"research, mostly." steve says it like it's nothing, like the very mention of that place doesn't make jonathan want to call nancy immediately. "hands-on research."

Carel Fabritius | Young Man in a Fur Cap | 1654 | London National Gallery
"Although there are no documented portraits of Fabritius, this is generally accepted as a self portrait. The artist didn't have any direct military connections. He has painted himself in military dress, just as his teacher Rembrandt had done in his portraits of the 1630s. The picture was painted in the year Fabritius died prematurely in a vast gunpowder explosion in Delft."

Money that went out of circulation?? Like you switched to a new currency type...?
england switched over from paper notes to plastic notes in 2020, and paper notes officially went out of circulation last year. despite that, i still get an awful lot of people (often tourists) losing their rag with me because i can't accept their out-of-date banknotes, which is sometimes funny but mainly frustrating.
#ig it makes sense if you're trying to get rid of money left over from your last trip to the uk#but sometimes people try it who are (or seem to be) average londoners and i'm like ??? where have you been#like obviously you can't tell who lives here and who doesn't but a middle-aged woman with a south london accent and a wallet of paper money?#baffling to me.

Life lately
Itâs been a while since I last posted a text blog here and I can still remember how I felt back then. The pandemic has really impacted everybody and personally, as a front liner, it was really tragic. My job as an ER nurse has become really exhausting instead of fulfilling. I can still remember going to work with heavy weight on my feet. Esp during the peak of COVID delta variant, I can painfully describe how i felt like giving up. But it was also the time I realized that the support I was receiving from my workmates and friends back then has been really helpful. The team that Iâve worked with in Makati Medical Center Emergency Department has been very very lovely. I was happy.
But I still left. Why? I believed I was trapped with something that will never be in my favor. There were times that I also thought that I was contented with whatâs being presented to me and didnât ever think of whatâs ahead. I wanted to achieve so much and even if I was happy, I will never get to reach them if I donât leave.
I moved to the UK March 2023. Itâs the scariest decision Iâve ever made in my life. I have been independent since I started working but the first few weeks living here has made me become like a toddler needing my mom everyday. Nobody taught me how to live abroad and when I got here, it felt like I had to discover everything on my own. Good thing that I have friends here from uni and previous work who guided me on what to do. It was a good decision choosing London over the outskirts.
4 months have passed and Iâm still adjusting to the weather and culture. It is very hard to cope. I thought I have figured out my life and people think that iâm so put together when iâm actually not. Thereâs still a lot to discover and to explore. One of my friends told me that he was also a mess before but things will get better and that I will love London even more.
So far it has been better: Everyday has been a learning opportunity for me. I am slowly learning how to manage my task and time in my new workplace although it hasnât been the same as the previous one and honestly, I still hate it. Whatâs keeping to stay is the team and people that i am working with. ;) I was able to buy things that I canât afford before: my dream shoes, makeup, and gadgets. Itâs not because I am splurging but I realized that I deprived myself to it and that I deserve and need it. (Char ngita og reason haha) I also got the chance to decorate my own bedroom and make it cozy as possible. And I get to enjoy my alone time.
Iâll be turning 30 in a few days and I just wanted to achieve peace of mind and genuine happiness. I just wanted to quote something from one of my favorite songs by Two Door Cinema Club:
âIt took a little time to make a little better
Itâs only going out
Just one thing then another you know
Letâs make this happen, girl
Weâre gonna show the world that something good can work
And it can work for you
And you know that it will.â

Rounding up some recent travels - and book finds!! đ
Itâs been a while since I shared any bookshopping trips, and so I thought I would catch up with a couple of recent trips which inevitably involved books⌠At the end of July, I had a lovely trip up to London thanks to the suggestion of JacquiWine. She had spotted that there was an exhibition on at the Royal Academy which featured Ukrainian modernist art and thought it might be right up my street ââŚ

Croydonâs Retro Appeal!
Croydonâs Space Age Era in the 70s was a remarkable turning point for the borough as various office and apartment blocks paved the way for retro to come full circle! #shotoniphone
Croydonâs Space Age Era in the 70s was a remarkable turning point for the borough as various office and apartment blocks paved the way for retro to come full circle! It was a peaceful evening when I produced this photo because I wanted to reflect on Croydonâs retro appeal coming full circle by bringing it back into the modern day, as everyone loves the old-school retrospective, and I love itâŚ

Johannes Vermeer | A Young Woman standing at a Virginal | 1672 | London National Gallery
"The young woman at the keyboard holds our eye with a direct gaze. The empty chair suggests she is expecting someone and the large painting of a naked Cupid, the god of erotic love, on the wall behind her may be a signal that she is waiting for her lover. Scenes of music making were a popular genre in seventeenth-century Holland. They were often associated with romantic encounters, sometimes obviously bawdy ones, sometimes apparently innocent. Here, the style of the Cupid painting derives from a book illustration on the theme of faithful love.
There has been much speculation that this picture and another by Vermeer, A Young Woman Seated at a Virginal (also in the National Gallery), might have been made as a pair. There are many similarities between the two, but also an apparent contrast. One may represent fidelity, the other a venal, mercenary approach to love."
The National Gallery Description:
"Vermeer's serene depiction of a keyboard player gazing directly at the viewer is also an idealised image of virtuous love. Behind her is a painting of Cupid, alluding to the picture's subject. Similar in size and subject matter, this is almost certainly a companion piece to Young Woman seated at a Virginal, also in the Gallery's collection."
