silly Izzy situation: he gets a parrot.
HE GETS A PARROT OH THIS GAVE ME BRAIN WORMS
-Stede is the one to get him the parrot- something about how hes got the wooden leg he has to complete the look? honestly izzy wasnt listening, stede was using his excited voice and izzys learnt he can zone out a bit when he gets like that. there was a hat too but that went to someone else Real quick (the parrot was trying to eat it anyway)
-i know nothing about parrots but im gonna say stede gets him an African grey. it's the goth-est parrot and they're Friends Now, hes got to give a gift that fits in with izzys Look
-when stede gives it him he protests LOUDLY but when stede gets all sad and says he will return him izzy draws a knife. wtf you can't return my gift Stede
- the parrot learns to say fuck REAL quick
-izzy learns bird care from buttons, obviously- izzy is Rules autistic he needs to know How you look after his pet. he is super rigorous with following the rules and at least one crew member has faced a tirade for feeding him something bad
-the bird rides everywhere on his shoulder. frenchie makes him a little pad so his claws don't scratch izzys leathers and so he can grip better
-he starts stroking the bird as a comfort (in Correct places, thank u buttons) he doesn't notice hes doing it but everyone else does. lucius has a sketch
-you know how some pets are like? exactly like their owners? yeah. this is the grumpiest fucking parrot and they are perfect together. he only likes izzy. after a while he mimicks izzy yelling at the crew and nobody knows what to do they all just. stare. izzy laughs.
- the parrot spends a little too much time with the swede somehow (jackies? izzy & jackie friendship my beloved i will force you in anywhere) and picks up his singing. its. something. they end up using it on raids as part of a fuckery. two haunting tones to create a sense of unreality, of being surrounded.
-i didn't give the parrot a name here because i genuinely believe izzy wouldnt give it a name, hed just call it 'the parrot', occasionally 'my parrot' when drunk. the crew call it mini Izzy.
(buttons asked the parrot its name)
-someone once gave the parrot a knife because they thought itd be funny. we do not talk about the parrot knife incident.
#i kinda wanna elaborate on more of these but this is already so much#izzy ignoring stede is not in a mean way! theyre buddies izzy has learnt when stede is Talking and when he just wants to ramble#hes still half listening but most of it just. went out the other ear. hes already planning all the things Stede didnt pick up#theyre autistic to autistic communication. to me#god this was so fun i LOVE thinking about izzy situations#nyxtalks#ofmd#izzy hands#israel hands#ask

I present yet ANOTHER atsv au:
the bird companion au
in which at the age of 10, every person is given a bird companion that signifies their purpose, character, and destiny by the Canon itself in a large ceremony.
Miles Morales was given the companion of a cockatiel, Gwen Stacy was given the companion of a swan, Pavitr Prabhakar was given the companion of a bluebird, and Hobie Brown was given the companion of a cockatoo.
Miguel O’Hara was given the companion of an African Grey Parrot, Jessica Drew was given the companion of a bald eagle, and Peter B. Parker was given the companion of a pigeon (hear me out here).
All of these symbolize their character and even their role in the multiverse. Cockatiels (Miles’s bird) symbolize the important of socialization and creating bonds with others, as well as holding your loved ones dear to your heart. Swans (Gwen’s bird) symbolizes grace and beauty. The swan is also seen in the famous ballet Swan Lake and it deals with the character of Odette being cursed, which is similar to Gwen Stacy and her curse of dying in every other universe.
Bluebirds (Pavitr’s bird) represent joy, happiness, and harmony, which is similar to how in the face of disaster and dangerous threats, Pavitr is still able to shine through with unwavering optimism that doesn’t feel faked in the slightest. Cockatoos (Hobie’s bird) don’t have one definite symbolism, but they are known for their seed dispersal to help regenerate the forest, and are often seen as “pests” to most farms. This can reflect on how Hobie gives to the community while screwing over the authority that wants to keep all resources to themselves.
African Grey Parrots (Miguel’s bird) are regarded as one of the smartest birds in the world, being the smartest parrot in the world as well. This, along with them symbolizing royalty through its tail feathers, emphasizes on the isolation Miguel goes through with his unique knowledge on the multiverse and the consequences of meddling with the Canon, as well as the grief and guilt that comes with knowing what will happen in the future.
Bald eagles (Jess’s bird) are seen as symbols of bravery and strength, which Jess perfectly represents. She works in one of the most elite and strict societies with prestige and a sense of professionalism that no one can deny is present. Yes, while this bird is also seen as specifically a symbol for the United States of America, this is what they symbolize on a broader level.
Now you may think I did Peter dirty by giving him a freaking PIGEON but the symbolism behind this particular bird fits his character arc a lot. Pigeons are seen as symbols of peace, love, and tranquility (calmness). His arc of learning to being love (MJ) back into his life again and a sense of peace with his new family emulates this bird perfectly. Also, I just see him with a pigeon especially with his attire, okay?
Here’s one more snippet for my OC Mariano O’Hara from the Mariano O’Hara au hehe
—-
Mariano O’Hara, if he were in this au as well, would be given the companion of a mockingbird. Mockingbirds, especially in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, are symbols of innocence. To kill a mockingbird then, is to destroy innocence. Mariano, while he does have some of the qualities of getting a cockatiel, bluebird, and even a pigeon, he gets a mockingbird because his innocence of the world highlights everything else in his personality. His abundant kindness and love for the world is a direct result of being kept away from it by Miguel, who is extremely adamant on making sure he doesn’t face the horrors of society that are unfortunately present. They parallel each other in a way: Miguel’s bird represents the burden of having the most knowledge and intelligence out of anyone and Mariano’s bird shows both the ups and downs of being completely innocent, by being both ignorant of everything bad, but also vulnerable to those evil forces.
—-
So you can tell I have a lil obsession hehe
lemme know what you guys think and add your own thoughts to this!!!

do have any hcs for your au + what time does it take place in ?
Yes, MANY. The au takes place around 2004 and it's set in Idaho. Idk why lmao.
Joe is in his early thirties and Luke in his mid thirties. Jack and William are like 28-29. for some reason I want Averell to be a bit younger so he's like 25.
I also wanted to make Joe's relationship with his brothers a bit more healthy, like his not always beating them up😭. He's still a little mean, but it's clear he loves them.
Joe's relationship with his mother isn't that good though (she was abusive😬). So Joe doesn't want to see her anymore.
Joe's is the type of person who's afraid to let anyone in. He's also not used to receiving physical affection. He's only really close to his brothers. He does have friends, but they aren't like "friend friends" yk.
Joe has a pet parrot (African grey). Joe loves her to death. Her name is Varpu.
Joe is bi. Like he's the most bisexual man I've ever seen.
He owns a LOT of guns. Which Luke is suspicious of.
He owns a motorcycle, bc "it makes him look cool".
This is already very clear but Joe is a juggalo (Insane Clown Posse fan). His fav song is "The juggla".
I wanna give him a tattoo, but I don't know what or where.
It just made sense for Luke to be a cop. And bc he's a cop and nothing bad has happened to him yet, he has this "I'm invincible" mentality. He has some prejudices towards Joe (he thinks Joe might be up to something illegal) Mainly bc of the people Joe hangs out with.
Luke is gay (duh).
He sometimes smokes weed (yikes Luke).
He and Jane are besties. Naturally, they do the dumbest shit together.
Luke is 6'2 (oh and Joe is 5'3).
He likes Joe for some odd reason (another yikes).
Luke loves going outside and to be in nature. He goes hiking too.
I'm sorry I really don't have that many hcs for the rest of the Dalton bros. They might as well all be queer lmao. They at some point befriend Luke, to Joe's dismay. They live a bit farther away from Joe, but they're always hanging out at Joe's place.
I have many more but this is already a lot gaah dammnn. Thanks for the ask!
I love this panel sm.

We haven’t slept in two days, which is not awful but does give us the sense of humor of a 12 year old.
I want to clean up our wheelchair so that we can go places and exercise the same day, and someone keeps parroting every question abled people ask like ‘what happened 🥺’ ‘how did you get hurt 😰’ ‘what’s wrong with yer legs 🤠’ and someone else went ‘Bear,’ and the one who wouldn’t shut up went ‘the gay kind 🤗’ and that’s been a snapshot of what d along with these fuckers is like.
Also I think we have factives of African Grey parrots, which are not unlike the other critters but only talk in that mimicry voice. This is the highlight of my week, they did form from new trauma and they are literal birds. And they keep alternating between high-pitched screams and ‘rat rat rat’. Weeeeeee

Best Pets for Home: Top 5 Pets and How to Choose the Right One
Finding the best pet for your home involves considering factors like space, time commitment, family dynamics, and personal preferences. Pets can bring joy, companionship, and responsibility to a household. Whether you're looking for a furry friend, a feathered companion, or a low-maintenance pet, there's something for everyone. In this article, we'll explore the top 5 pets for home and offer insights on how to choose the best one for your lifestyle.
1. Dogs
Dogs are often considered the ultimate companions for families and individuals alike. They are loyal, loving, and provide a sense of security. However, owning a dog requires time, effort, and patience.
Popular Breeds for Homes: Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Beagles, and Poodles.
Behavior: Dogs are social animals that thrive on interaction and activity. They require regular exercise, mental stimulation, and companionship.
Weight: Varies widely by breed, ranging from 5 lbs (2 kg) for small breeds like Chihuahuas to 100 lbs (45 kg) for larger breeds like Great Danes.
Food: Dogs require a balanced diet of protein, vegetables, and grains. High-quality dry dog food is a good base, but some dogs may benefit from fresh or raw food diets.
Advantages: Loyal, protective, great companions, encourage exercise.
Disadvantages: Require a lot of attention, training, and regular exercise. Some breeds are prone to health issues.
2. Cats
Cats are independent, low-maintenance pets that are perfect for smaller homes or apartments. They can be affectionate without being overly demanding and don't require the same level of attention as dogs.
Popular Breeds for Homes: British Shorthair, Siamese, Persian, and Maine Coon.
Behavior: Cats are curious, playful, and generally independent. While some cats are very affectionate, others may prefer solitude.
Weight: Typically between 8-15 lbs (3.5-7 kg).
Food: High-protein, grain-free dry or wet food is recommended. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their diet should primarily consist of meat.
Advantages: Low maintenance, independent, ideal for small spaces.
Disadvantages: Can be aloof, may scratch furniture, litter box cleaning is required.
3. Fish
For those looking for a low-maintenance and visually pleasing pet, fish are an excellent choice. A well-maintained aquarium can add beauty to any room, and fish are quiet, peaceful pets that require minimal interaction.
Popular Species for Homes: Betta Fish, Goldfish, Guppies, and Neon Tetras.
Behavior: Fish are calming to watch and can be mesmerizing with their graceful movements. However, they do not offer the same level of interaction as other pets.
Weight: Varies depending on the species, but most common household fish are small and lightweight.
Food: Specialized fish flakes, pellets, or frozen foods based on the species.
Advantages: Low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing, quiet.
Disadvantages: Require regular water changes and tank maintenance, no physical interaction.
4. Birds
Birds can be wonderful pets, especially for those who enjoy animals with personality and intelligence. Birds range from low-maintenance species like parakeets to more demanding species like parrots.
Popular Species for Homes: Budgies (Parakeets), Cockatiels, Lovebirds, and African Grey Parrots.
Behavior: Birds are social and often form strong bonds with their owners. Some species can even mimic human speech and sounds.
Weight: Varies by species; small birds like budgies weigh around 1 oz (28 g), while larger parrots can weigh up to 3.5 lbs (1.5 kg).
Food: A balanced diet of seeds, fruits, vegetables, and specialized pellets is necessary to keep birds healthy.
Advantages: Intelligent, interactive, can be trained to talk or perform tricks.
Disadvantages: Can be noisy, require social interaction, and may become destructive if bored.
5. Rabbits
Rabbits are great pets for families or individuals who want a soft, furry friend that is relatively low maintenance. They are quiet, social animals that can be litter-trained and kept indoors or outdoors.
Popular Breeds for Homes: Holland Lop, Netherland Dwarf, Lionhead, and Flemish Giant.
Behavior: Rabbits are social animals that enjoy being around people. They can be litter-trained and love to hop around in open spaces.
Weight: Depending on the breed, rabbits can weigh anywhere from 2 lbs (1 kg) to 15 lbs (7 kg).
Food: A diet consisting mainly of hay, fresh vegetables, and rabbit pellets.
Advantages: Quiet, can be litter-trained, good for small spaces.
Disadvantages: Require regular grooming, need space to roam, can chew on furniture.
How to Choose the Best Pet for Your Home
Choosing the best pet depends on several factors:
Time Commitment: Some pets, like dogs, require a significant amount of time for training, exercise, and attention. If you have a busy schedule, consider low-maintenance pets like fish or cats.
Living Space: Consider how much space you have. Larger animals like dogs and rabbits need more space to move around, while fish and small birds can thrive in smaller areas.
Allergies: If you or a family member has allergies, hypoallergenic pets such as certain dog breeds (like poodles) or hairless cats may be a better option.
Family Dynamics: Pets like dogs can be great companions for children, while smaller pets like fish or birds may be more suited to families with older children who understand how to handle animals gently.
Budget: Some pets require more financial investment than others, not only in terms of initial costs but also in terms of ongoing care, food, and veterinary expenses.
Experience: First-time pet owners may find it easier to start with low-maintenance pets like fish or small birds, while more experienced owners may opt for dogs or rabbits.
Final Thoughts
Owning a pet is a rewarding experience that comes with responsibilities. Whether you choose a loyal dog, an independent cat, a peaceful fish, a chatty bird, or a soft rabbit, ensure that you are prepared to meet their physical and emotional needs. Researching the specific requirements of each species and breed will help you make the best decision for your home and lifestyle.
FAQs
What is the best pet for first-time owners? Cats and fish are excellent choices for first-time owners due to their relatively low maintenance needs compared to dogs.
Are rabbits good pets for small apartments? Yes, rabbits can be kept in small apartments as long as they have space to hop around and plenty of enrichment to prevent boredom.
What is the most low-maintenance pet? Fish are considered one of the most low-maintenance pets, as they require little interaction and only need regular tank cleaning and feeding.
Do birds require a lot of attention? Some species of birds, like parrots, require a significant amount of social interaction and attention, while smaller birds like budgies are more independent.
Can dogs be left alone during the day? Some dog breeds can be left alone for a few hours, but most dogs require companionship and exercise throughout the day. Consider hiring a dog walker if you have a busy schedule.

As promised, we got here exactly what daemons the characters from POI would have
First: John Reese is a wolfhound. This man is the most dog-coded character I've ever seen in my life. I'm of the opinion that people default into assigning dog daemons too easily, and partly that's because none of the characters I've seen given them have been anywhere near as dog as Reese is. My sister and I first started coming up with these almost five years ago, and this was the very first we landed on.
The next one we landed on was Shaw. We waffled between panther and cougar for a bit, but panther is a little... fancy for her. Dressing up isn't exactly one of her highest priorities; she'd prefer to be on the roof with a gun. Or in a tree with a mouthful of teeth, so to speak.
Our next stop was Joss Carter and damn, but the second we came up with it, we were sold. She has a peregrine falcon. Bird of prey endemic to NYC, something beautiful and fierce.
After that, we tossed around a few ideas but didn't settle on anything until now, years later. One walk through the rain and suddenly we put all the pieces together
First, we had ideas about a serval for Root, but it didn't quite fit. We were trying to parallel Shaw with a cat, but in the end, it makes more sense to parallel Finch. So of course she has a bird! An African grey parrot, something brutally intelligent and honestly, often mistreated. And since she's paralleling him by having a bird like his names, that leaves us free to pick what the hell ever for his daemon
I had insect vibes for him, but I couldn't think of anything known for intelligence. We floated a bee or an ant, but. He's not exact social. Then my sister suggested. Well. Why not an entire colony of ants. And you know what, yeah. Hell yeah. Finch's daemon is an entire colony of ants. Pullman isn't exactly gonna show up to tell us no.
Elias is next, and he gets to parallel both Finch and Carter! Like Finch's names, he has a bird, and like Carter he has a bird endemic to NYC. He has a rock dove, otherwise known as a common pigeon. He needs something innocuous that can fly (ha) under the radar
His right-hand man, Antony aka Scarface, gets a fisher. It was my sister's first thought for Elias, but it fits better for him. Something small and extremely vicious.
Lastly, we debated over Fusco for a long while. He kinda has dog energy, but. Well. No one can match Reese on that front. Eventually, we settle on a very large, kinda scraggly grey tabby cat. Sorta like a Maine coon, but without the pedigree.

Okay as a proud parent of a parrot, most people draw Grian with scarlet macaw wings. This makes sense; they’re recongised as parrots, they’re mainly red, and they’re also recongised as one of the parrot types in the game
The majority of the parrots in the game actually are macaws, this excludes the grey parrot, which is recongised as a cockatiel (which is a type of parrot but is much smaller then the macaws)
There’s lots of parrots! They come in all sizes in real life, from little budgies (from Australia, who are easy to care for and frequently found at stores), to the larger lovebirds (who have several morphs, my favourite being the peach-faced lovebird morph and are from Africa), to the African grey which is well-known for mimicry (but is specifically not in the game as they are entirely grey, not just mostly), all the way up to the hyacinth macaw (largest by size alone and the template for dark blue Minecraft parrots) and the flightless kākāpō from New Zealand (adorable idiots that can’t be kept as pets but who look like moss chickens and are the heaviest)
I saw some art of winged Grian you did and had the urge to tell you all about parrots
Lovebirds can’t have avacado; it’s toxic to them. Only male canaries were brought into mines because they sing much more frequently then females. Budgies have the largest recorded vocabulary (might have changed since but at one point recently they did). Much like snakes, we call different colouring morphs, but it’s also common to just say “blue budgie” instead.

~Griffis Supspecies Height Comparison + Info~ ------------------------------------ Just doing this for fun~ I made this so I can use this to design more griffins oc if I want to save time. Also explaining the differences. Not just for these that I show here, also included for other bird species. Of course, I can't filled all in here. Just try and use common senses, if you can.
There's a few things that I explained based in my universe world, so, just want to make that clear.
If the pic is kinda hard to see here, you can view the full and close up image on DA: https://www.deviantart.com/greenmaneheart/art/Griffis-Supspecies-Height-Comparison-Info-in-des-978901373
I will explain more details of what features they had. have fun reading~ ------------------------------------
Very small - HUMMINGBIRD
This also included other small bird species such as kingfisher, kookaburra, cockatiel, parakeet, parrotlet.
They have a certain natural ability based on what bird species they are; kingfisher griffins can catch fish. Kookaburra griffins can make loud and chaotic cry. And more.
Their small size makes it easy for them to fly swiftly or hide in small spaces. ------------------------------------
Medium small - OWL
This included all types of owl species out there.
They can fly without making a slightest sound of their wings flapping while flying.
Their common traits are usually quiet, watchful, sly and deep-thinkers. They seem more active hunting during night time, making them nocturnal creatures.
Owl griffins are considered as the calmest griffin compared to other subspecies griffins.
They are not usually aggressive and only do so when it's necessary like defending their home.
Despite also being considered as a predatory kind, they're pretty calm. ------------------------------------
Medium - MACAW
This included all types of macaw and medium-sized parrots species such as cockatoo, African grey parrot, scarlet macaw, black palm cockatoo and more.
Their habitats are usually in the jungle or rainforest.
Some have the ability to mimic sounds. Their special beak is for macaws, able to crack open any hard nuts easily, without any tools.
Their common traits can come in pretty friendly, intelligent, crafty and creative. They're considered as the smartest and creative subspecies of griffin. ------------------------------------
Large - NORMAL GRIFFIN
A common griffin, half eagle, half lion. However, this also included all types of eagle species, including hawk and falcons. Usually predatory birds.
This type of griffin has the biggest wingspan of all other griffins. A strong flier and the fastest flier than all other griffins.
They are also considered the strongest griffin subspecies.
They are also common subspecies and the most populated compare to other subspecies griffins.
Most of these griffins are very well known to hunt any certain food or animal easily. ------------------------------------
Medium Large - PEAFOWL
Male peacock griffins are usually a bit bigger than female peahen griffins.
However, this size can come from other types of bird such as Lyrebirds and birds of paradise.
Usually the royals are a bit bigger compared to it's average size.
Peafowl griffins are considered as the most beautiful creatures in Griffonia due to their unique pattern and colorful feathers.
Peacock griffin can fly but not as fast as other griffins. Peahen griffin cannot fly properly and can only glide.
Certain peafowl families will wear a certain gem on their forehead to easily identify their close relatives and family. This also to show off their beauty and high quality of themselves.
This has been going for many generations and now considered as their tradition.
Most peafowl are from the royal family. They live in a high ground place called The Proud Tree Kingdom.
They're usually very graceful, elegant, and well mannered. They always try to maintain their appearance to stay clean and beautiful to show that they are more superior than other griffins. ------------------------------------
Very tall and large - OSTRICH
Ostrich griffins are considered as the largest griffin subspecies.
They are also one of the griffins that cannot fly.
Females can have pale, pastel, whitish or brown color feathers, while males have dark coloring feathers.
However, as a normal ostrich would have, they're able to run fast compared to other griffins. Their highest speed limit is almost the same speed as the normal griffin's flying speed.
Most ostrich griffins participated in a racing sport game, and so were considered as professional racers.
These griffins can usually be found in many populations living somewhere in the desert western land, which is where the racing stadium for ostriches is located.

Hi, i’ve been looking at your post, talking about it, and sharing it with some friends. Honestly i’d even say i’m a fan of you and your work despite how little of it there is right now. I have a couple question.
First, I was wondering if you had any other accounts that I could follow your work on, like twitter and such.
Second, I saw that you took classes in etholgy and talked about advocating for the personhood of animals. I mean, I know they’re smarter than we sometimes give them credit for. Take for example the recent study with scientist communicating with whales with their own language for the first time. But I was hoping to get your insight in what you mean by personhood of animals and thoughts on the topic. (And also table napkin thought on how anthropomorphizing can harm or help our understanding of animals)
Third but a little more obscure, is that you use humanity, personhood, and the being of « more human » a lot. I was hoping if you could expand on the differences of these terms and how they interact with one another.
Sorry for all the questions, just honest to god fascinated with your perspective of things and the topic in general.
Here’s the whale communication study I mentioned: https://globalnews.ca/news/10182116/humpback-whale-conversation-talking-to-aliens/amp/
Oh my gosh thank you so much for your kind words! This, AO3, and YouTube are actually my only accounts online that I post anything on, and I just use my YT account to reupload other people's deleted videos. I used to use Reddit but I'm trying to distance myself from that account since half a decade of hot take type comments starting when I was 15 isn't exactly the best look for anyone.
Your last two questions are linked so I'm going to address them at once. Human is simply the term used to refer to a member of the genus Homo. There's nothing all that special about it philosophically when separated from personhood, which is more or less the description of what beings do and don't fully matter morally. Speculative fiction and philosophy tend to equate it with sapience, which is more or less a meaningless term made up to separate humans (or worse, specific groups of humans) from other animals and make ourselves feel superior. There have been attempts to give it meaning, but nearly every definition uses traits that are found in at least one other species of animal and/or are not universal to every group of humans (with the notable exception of artistry but I frankly find it absurd to discount something's moral worth over that). As such, if we're going to approach the topic logically, then some animals at the very least have traits of personhood.
Language, for example, isn't exactly common in animals, but it isn't unheard of either. Bats, cetaceans (whales and dolphins), pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), elephants, songbirds (a group that contains crows btw), hummingbirds, and of course parrots all learn different "words" that they apply meaning to and then use. Cetaceans, parrots, and some songbirds even use something akin to grammar.
Ritual behavior has been shown in chimpanzees, dolphins, and elephants as they grieve for their dead.
Self-awareness, the trait most commonly held up as making humans special, is hard to measure due to the language barrier, but there is still some evidence for it in certain animals. The mirror test isn't perfect when it comes to discounting a given animal's self-awareness, but if an animal can identify itself in a mirror, it's hard to argue with the idea that it has a sense of self. Animals that passed include various dolphins, great apes, elephants, magpies, and even certain fish. Furthermore, an African grey parrot named Alex once asked a question about himself, being the first recorded instance of an animal asking anything, and bottlenose dolphins use names for themselves and others in their pod.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. I don't really have a definitive list of animals that I believe should be considered "people", especially given all the legal implications of that sentiment, but you've probably noticed that same groups of animals showed up again and again. Dolphins were there in all of the different categories, and elephants only failed the grammar category because they largely communicate using vibrations which work so differently from regular sound that they're hard to meaningfully compare to human languages. Parrots, corvids (crows and relatives), and great apes all have stand out members that showed up in two or three of the categories in the African grey, magpie, and chimpanzee respectively, and the other members of those families as well as whales are all intelligent and social enough that I am of the opinion that they all deserve certain philosophical rights and even legal protections. It's so easy for us to see personhood as a black and white thing that something either has or doesn't have, but like most things, it really is more of a spectrum.
To answer your "table napkin thought", while I won't deny that anthropomorphizing real animals can often lead to a lack of true understanding of them, the harm done by people trying to avoid doing so is both more common and so, so much more horrific that I hesitate to critique it too much. I mean, I have straight up seen very influential people say that acknowledging the extremely well supported fact that other animals are capable of feeling pain is "anthropomorphizing" them because one specific area of the brain that is partially responsible for processing pain in humans is only present in primates, and that of course can, and historically has, lead to horrific abuse.
I really don't mind all the questions! I love talking about things I'm passionate about, and this topic is certainly up there among the the things I care most about.

☕️ intelligence/emotional capacity of animals (do you think our current understanding over or underestimates which creatures are capable of complex thought, self awareness, etc)
Okay this is something I am super passionate about. So for a long time researchers were in the underestimating category. However I also think some people, like the ppl with the talking buttons are in the overestimating category.
So for the first one science wasn't interested in animal intelligence for a long time bc it didn't seem like something worth studying. Many religions and philosophies will say humans are distinctly special from animals, and I have heard ppl say this a fair amount in biology and psychology classes. Which is just something that annoys me because it is a statement with no backing, and often times the line in the sand of what separates humans from animals will be surpassed by some animal and then ppl will come up with a new one (we've been "beholding a man" for a lot of human history now 🥱). One famous example is when Jane Goodall recorded Chimpanzees using sticks to fish for termites, which was evidence of tool use (considered at the time a unique and defining trait of humans), her mentor, paleontologist Louis Leaky said, “Now we must redefine tool, redefine man, or accept chimpanzees as human.”
However the beginning of a lot of animal intelligence research still involved testing animal's ability to act like humans, such as trying to get chimps to talk and act like humans. The most horrifying example being Gua who was a baby chimp raised by the Kelloggs at the same time as their own human child, to see if they could essentially raise a chimp into a human. I think a lot of studies about whether animals can talk have this issue. Even beloved ones like Koko the Gorilla, her signing is about as scientific as a Rorschach inkblot test, it often requires a lot of interpretation that cannot be confirmed in an experiment. We decided that something we do is the marker for intelligence, but just bc other animals don't communicate like we do or even think like we do does not mean that they aren't intelligent. Some people discount certain displays of animal intelligence as not intelligent bc they are seen as "intrinsic behavior", but we are social animals and count emotional intelligence as a type of intelligence. Is recognizing the emotions of others not intrinsic to social animals?
Each species has their own umwelt, which is the way they experience the world. We can't do some things such as sense electrical activity or see in infrared, inversely animals aren't going to talk or even display intelligence like we do. So researchers will have to get a little creative with their experiments of testing what animals do and don't know by taking a species' umwelt into account. Also somethings are just hard to define, like what is the line in the sand for complex thought? Self awareness also has that same issue. We inherently trust that other humans have self awareness and thoughts because we do. Behaviorists, scientists from a specific field of psychology will say that other people having thoughts or a mind is not something you can test in an experiment so we should not believe in it. You can't say other ppl have a mind bc you do, what if you are the ONLY person who has one (I'm not making this shit up my mentor in grad school was one of these ppl and this shit was unit one of the learning class). Cognitive psychology is the science of uncovering thought processes and while psychology has shifted in their direction, behaviorists still argue it's dumb. So yeah if ppl say that shit about humans you can imagine how hard it is to test in animals.
Anyways, some cool examples of potential complex thought are:
Moray Eels and Groupers working together to hunt: video of moray eel and grouper communicating and hunting together
Ravens can use water displacement to get something they can't reach: video
Irene Pepperberg's studies with African Grey Parrots are basically the best I've seen in terms of using human language to understand animal intelligence. Alex was taught various colors, shapes, material types, and count small thing and can then tell you about certain objects when prompted. What makes her interesting is the method for teaching the parrots was based not on humans but what parrot's umwelt and social behaviors. It was not recorded on camera but Pepperberg says one evening Alex asked her what color he was, implying self awareness: a long video on Pepperberg's experiments experiment comparing parrots to small children
There are also other phenomena observed in the wild such as animals such as apes, elephants, and cetaceans displaying mourning/funerary behavior over deceased animals they knew.
Another thing that people used to say is that humans were the only animals that had culture. Also, now being proven not to be true. I taught an animal behavior class and the textbook had an entire chapter on cultural transmission. Here's a cool video on one form of cultural transmission, whale songs
So, I don't think humans will ever sit down and have a conversation with a chimpanzee like a human, or they'll invent a way for dogs to speak to us in full sentences like the movie Up. However animals are more intelligent than they are often given credit for, there isn't a lot of evidence for animals being stimulus response machines as (especially behaviorists) previously thought.
Some good books if you are interested in the subject:
Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are and Mama's Last Hug by Frans de Waal (he has more books that are probably good but those are the two I've read)
Through A Window by Jane Goodall
Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin
What a Fish Knows by Jonathan Balcombe
Beyond Words by Carl Safina
Inside a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz
The Emotional Lives of Animals by Marc Bekoff
#sorry if this is a lot but you hit a special interest of mine anon 😅#also i love getting to shit on jon bc i'm 90% sure he argues humans don't have aind not bc he believes it#but bc he LOVES playing devils advocate he will do this with literally anything#asks#animal behavior#animal intelligence#*mind

Journey Through the Animal Kingdom at Odin Birds & Reptile Park, Surat
On a recent venture, I, Surat’s avid avian enthusiast, Zia Saiyed (Surat Birds Lover), had the pleasure of immersing myself in the vibrant, lively world of Odin Birds & Reptile Park nestled in Dumas, Surat. This sanctuary of exotic fauna offered a mesmerizing array of winged and scaled creatures that captivated my senses and curiosity alike.
As I roamed through the park, I marveled at the kaleidoscopic plumage of splendid Macaws, the playful antics of Sun Conures, and the lively chatter of Budgies. The park teemed with life; majestic African Grey Parrots showcased their intelligence and charm, while serene fish glided gracefully in aquariums, bringing a calming contrast to the vibrant avian energy.
What intrigued me further were the rare hand-tamed Iguanas and Pythons, gentle giants handled with care. Also, hedgehogs and sugar gliders added a unique charm to this enthralling collection of creatures. Among these, I encountered towering ostriches and other breathtaking species that one would rarely find gathered in one place.
The visit left me spellbound, and I must say, Odin Birds & Reptile Park truly embodies a haven for the exotic, providing a surreal escape into nature’s marvels here in Surat.
