BIRB LORE TIME! (the last installment of yumi's uh idkwhatitis)
here's Lea. african grey parrot (did you know all african greys look exactly the same like there's no way i can recognise her if she's with another parrot sfkdjghdf)
we got her in 2016 when she was 11. her previous owners were moving and they wanted to give her to someone who would genuinely take care of her. they knew my dad and he went ahead and said his daughter (me) has a thing for the animal kingdom 💀 (true tho) and she is prob the right person
anyways we went to their place, met her and oh. i knew absolutely nothing about these parrots right. we took her to our home and they just told us what to feed her, how she plays, what she likes and dislikes, etc.
so african greys are very intelligent and bruh. this female sounds like an absolute MAN when she speaks the human tongue (i actually got scared when she first said something LOL). the previous owners were like a mom and two daughters and her daughters were babies when she got this parrot so they didn't train lea. bc of that, she does not really know how to fly/land and since she's spent basically all life in the cage, it's her safe territory now and she does not like to come out
she was also not used to men bc she lived with ladies and then here she is with my dad and big bro (my lil bro was like 10 so she was comfy around him) but she was the type to not speak in front of men AT ALL
anyways i did my research, we all did we've come a really, really long way. her comfy zone is very wide now. she's come from only sticking to certain foods (her fav chips, a few fruits and nuts) to basically eating and trying everything (she doesn't even look at her chips anymore) (the look on her face when she first tried a mango and loved it is sth i'll never forget). she now talks in front of everyone (parrots talk when they are happy so ig she's happy here :'))
from letting us barely pet her neck to now getting full body massages and letting me preen her (I FEEL LIKE HER MOTHER). from wanting to bite us to affectionately pretending to bite me now (im her fav human, no one else can try this). from getting sick every season bc she was used to a certain temperature to thriving in every season while we get sick LOL
i think it's time i start to get her to come out her cage. it's gonna be a very slow process since i'm not a professional and it's gonna be only her and me (and she might hurt my hands beyond repair lmao i need my hands to do my job man) anddd bc i'm the only person who can do this, yet...
i'm kind of allergic to her :)
but i love suffering, suffering is my middle name. so remember how i said i got cat allergies? that happened when we got this parrot. she used to stay in my room and these parrots have like this white powder thing on their skin that can cause allergies. so my nose being exposed to these allergens long term caused some damage alright (i got allergic to literally every other thing, flu all the time for years, got no quality sleep and constant headaches) andd i finally got surgery in 2022. my allergies are almost gone now but i still have to be careful around her (a tragic love story right there)
anyways i love her, she loves me, we understand each other pretty damn well (it's almost eerie lmao). we dance to kpop together. we sing together. her avg lifespan is 60+ so we have a bet going on on who lives longer :D (bet it's gonna be her-) also we were meant to be fr bc her prev owner has the same name as me so she never had to learn to say my name :D
BIRB LORE BIRB LORE!!! omg she's so pretty :'))) well ig in that case,,, all african grey parrots are pretty 😭😭 that's actually really interesting that every one looks alike to the next ... i wonder if there's like an evolutionary mechanism to that— ANYWAYS
no cuz u literally feel like ur the animal whisperer at this point LMAO like all the stray cats and now the parrot, but ig it's also a testament to the fact that ur a good person! i feel like u can almost always trust an animal's instincts when it comes to people vibes haha 😌 unless it's like cherry, that girl is so needy and moody w everyone i can't even be too sure that she likes me cuz i picked her up this morning and she was so good abt it, and then i put her down and she turned around and tried to eat my toe 🧍🏻‍♀️
awh im so glad she's gotten so much more comfortable now 😭 that's really sweet to hear abt this progression esp ur relationship with her :'))) tbh tho why am i not surprised that she was the one where ur allergies originated from 😭 you fr are just like defying death left and right skfndkfnfk idk man TT anyways . LOL UR BET W LEA ABT WHO'LL DIE FIRST IM YELLING SJFNEKFNJR im glad ur doing much better tho now after the surgery tho 😭
also wishing u luck w slowly getting her out of her cage :')) im sure you'll prevail w patience and lots of mangos!! omg aren't there specific gloves people use for birds? like so their talons don't scratch them or sumn?
thank u for sharing tho as always, i was very excited opening my inbox this morning !! 💖

In captivity, it’s important to offer a balanced diet that includes high-quality pellets, fresh fruits, vegetables, and occasional treats.
5. Lifespan: The lifespan of parrots varies greatly depending on the species. Smaller parrots, like Budgerigars, may live around 5 to 10 years, while larger species, such as Macaws and Cockatoos, can live for several decades. They need a spacious and enriched environment, including a properly sized cage, perches of various sizes and textures, and toys to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and mental engagement are necessary for their well-being.
It’s important to note that parrots are long-lived, highly intelligent, and social animals that require significant time, attention, and care. Story working title: Angels in Pajamas
Zeke (he/him)
Tumblr media
Slightly younger than the universe. He's an angel, a Principality.
Has lived on earth almost since he was created, as a guardian. Because of that, he feels basically the same as how a human feels, physically--he can feel pain, hunger, emotions.
He is pretty much a trans guy, and pansexual/Demipanromantic. His god-given body is female, and he can't get surgery because no one on earth would understand how to do surgery on a nonhuman, and they don't understand stuff like that in Headquarters--angels who try to permanently change their manifestations/earthly bodies are basically shunned. HRT wouldn't work either. He binds (he loves modern binders) and packs.
He loves wearing pajamas and sleeping (the working title mostly came from him). He loves music (he has a hand painted acoustic guitar he loves to play, along with records, cassettes, and CDs), cars/other transportation methods (he has a skateboard, a VW bus, a motorcycle, and a ‘68 Chevy El Camino), and I think whittling, cooking, and baking. He loves working his human job (mechanic) and trying to help people he comes across, and occasionally saving all of humanity, though he hasn't had to do anything drastic for quite a while. He protects southwestern US and a portion of northwestern Mexico. He lives in a fictional (hopefully) town called Chester Lake, New Mexico.
A friend and their family own a boarding stable, where he has a horse boarded there--a buckskin mustang gelding named Maximus, or just Max. In the original story plans, he had a bearded dragon, German shepherd, and an African Grey parrot, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep that up.
He's short (about 5’3”) and stockier, has short lightish-brown hair that's usually in a wild mess, medium tan skin tone, brown eyes. He has some wrinkles and looks to most people to be in his upper 30s to mid 40s, depending on the day. He also wears glasses, mostly for the Aesthetic. He has a few tattoos, but the only one I know is his rank and group tattoo that appears on his earthly body and his celestial body. It's the only one that Won't fade all the way off after 50 years. He also has his lobes and one eyebrow pierced, as well as numerous scars from different battles.
He cannot roller skate and for some reason that he can't figure out, cows hate him. Most animals like him though, and if he is closely enough bonded to them, he can even communicate with and understand them.
As for powers, he can communicate with most living things with touch telepathy, including humans, and some humans with regular telepathy. He can heal living things and extend their lifespans, though he really only does it with his pets. He is empathic in addition to the Telepathy. Functionally immortal, and only certain things can hurt him. He has supernatural reflexes, and has two celestial weapons (sword and brass knuckles) and a shield. He can see into supernatural wavelengths, which includes seeing souls and whether something is blessed or cursed, being able to tell if Magic is pure or impure, and if a weapon is celestial or infernal whether it's disguised or not--something specific to principalities and higher. He can lightly hypnotize people (so they don't realize he and his pets are too old). He has night vision and increased sensory sensitivity. He also only has to sleep 2 hours a day and doesn't have to eat as much as a human--most angels don't have to eat or sleep at all, but he and other principalities have been on Earth so long that they have to. He can fly and possess animals as long as his earthly body is in a safe place, but he can't possess people.

African greys are so smart and cool! I wanted one for a while but honestly the bird owner life is not for me. I will stick to cuddling my dogs and watching videos of birds on YouTube.
This is the one I’ve been watching! And I’ve been doing exactly the same thing 😭 It seems like having an African Grey is like having a child prodigy that’s stuck in its terrible twos for 60+ years (what I’d give for my dog to have a parrot’s lifespan though…).
It’s really fascinating how he tries repeating and classifying things using his existing vocab. Like when he was trying to learn “Shrek” he started out saying “red” or “shrock” (because he knows “sock” and “rock”), or another vid where he ASKED what the kitchen backsplash was made of and his owner said “rock?” and he smacked it with his beak and said “glass” because that’s how they’d been classifying ceramic mugs and bowls.
OH or how they taught him to say “Wario” when they held up a Wario figurine so now he classifies all plastic figurines (Shrek, Mario, etc.) as “Wario.”

Everything You Need to Know About the Dusky Conure (Dusky-Headed Conure)
Introduction
Dusky conures, also known as dusky-headed conures (Aratinga Weddellii), are beautiful and fascinating parrot species popular among bird enthusiasts and pet owners. These small-to-medium-sized birds are native to the tropical rainforests of South America, specifically found in regions of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Known for their playful personalities and striking appearance, they make excellent pets for bird lovers. In this article, we will delve into everything there is to know about the dusky conure, including its natural habitat, physical characteristics, care requirements, and more.
Natural Habitat and Distribution of Dusky Conures
The dusky conure or dusky-headed conure thrives in the humid lowland rainforests of the Amazon Basin. These birds are typically found at elevations of up to 1,400 meters (4,593 feet) above sea level, residing in both primary and secondary forests. In the wild, they prefer the canopy layer of the forest, where they can forage for fruits, seeds, and vegetation while remaining relatively safe from predators.
Dusky conures live in large flocks, sometimes consisting of 30 or more individuals, allowing them to socialize and stay protected. The group dynamics help them navigate through their habitat as they travel in search of food and shelter. Flocks of dusky-headed conures are a common sight in the treetops of South American forests.
Physical Characteristics of the Dusky Conure
The dusky conure is a visually appealing bird with distinct characteristics that set it apart from other conure species. Adult dusky-headed conures measure around 11 to 12 inches in length, including their tail, and weigh between 90 and 120 grams. Their average lifespan ranges from 20 to 30 years with proper care, although some individuals may live longer in captivity.
The plumage of the dusky conure is primarily green, with subtle variations in shading across its body. Its name comes from its unique head coloration, which is a soft grayish-brown or dusky hue. The head contrasts with the vibrant green feathers on the wings and body, making the bird easily recognizable. They also have splashes of blue feathers on the flight feathers, tail, and wings, further enhancing their striking appearance.
Another feature of the dusky-headed conure is its bare, pale skin around the eyes, often referred to as the “eye ring,” which is surrounded by bright, expressive eyes. Their beaks are dark and slightly curved, ideal for cracking seeds and nuts.
Dusky Conure Behavior and Personality
Dusky conures are known for their friendly and outgoing personalities. They are social birds that thrive on interaction, making them ideal pets for individuals or families who are willing to devote time and attention to their care. These birds are playful, energetic, and curious, often exploring their surroundings and engaging with toys and activities in their environment.
Due to their highly social nature, dusky-headed conures bond strongly with their owners. In captivity, they require regular interaction and mental stimulation to remain happy and healthy. They are known to be affectionate birds that enjoy sitting on their owners' shoulders or being involved in daily activities. Their friendly disposition makes them easy to train, and they can learn a variety of tricks and behaviors through positive reinforcement methods.
While dusky conures are not as vocal as some other parrot species, they are still capable of producing a range of sounds. Their calls tend to be loud and high-pitched, which is typical of many conures, but they are less prone to constant screaming or excessive noise. Some dusky-headed conures may learn to mimic words or sounds, though they are not known for being expert talkers compared to other parrots like African greys or cockatiels.
Housing and Cage Requirements for Dusky Conures
One of the most important aspects of dusky conure care is providing them with a suitable living environment. As active birds, dusky conures require a spacious cage that allows them to move around freely and exercise. The minimum cage size recommended for a dusky-headed conure is 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 30 inches high, with bar spacing of no more than ¾ of an inch to prevent escape or injury.
Within the cage, it is essential to provide plenty of perches, toys, and activities to keep the bird entertained and mentally stimulated. Conures enjoy chewing, climbing, and exploring, so a variety of bird-safe toys, swings, ladders, and foraging materials should be available. Rotate toys regularly to prevent boredom.
Dusky conures also need time outside of their cage to exercise and socialize. It is recommended to allow them at least a few hours of supervised out-of-cage time each day to fly, stretch their wings, and interact with their owners. A safe, bird-proofed area should be provided for this purpose, as these curious birds may explore electrical cords, furniture, or other potentially hazardous objects.
Diet and Nutrition for Dusky Conures
A balanced and nutritious diet is crucial to keeping dusky conures healthy. In the wild, these birds feed on a variety of fruits, seeds, nuts, and vegetation. In captivity, it is essential to replicate this diverse diet to ensure proper nutrition.
A high-quality commercial pellet should form the foundation of a dusky conure's diet. Pellets are specially formulated to provide essential vitamins and minerals, reducing the risk of nutritional deficiencies. However, pellets alone are not enough, and they should be supplemented with fresh fruits, vegetables, and seeds.
Dusky-headed conures enjoy a wide variety of fresh produce, including leafy greens (like kale, spinach, and lettuce), carrots, peppers, apples, berries, and citrus fruits. It is important to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly and remove any seeds or pits that may be harmful to birds. Additionally, nuts such as almonds, walnuts, and cashews can be offered as occasional treats.
Seed mixes can also be part of their diet but should be given in moderation, as conures may selectively eat seeds and neglect other foods, leading to imbalances. Fresh water should always be available, and food and water dishes should be cleaned daily to prevent contamination.
Health and Common Issues in Dusky Conures
Like all pets, dusky conures are susceptible to certain health issues. By providing a clean environment, a proper diet, and regular veterinary care, many of these problems can be avoided. However, it is important to be aware of some common health concerns that can affect dusky-headed conures.
Feather Plucking: One of the most prevalent issues among conures is feather plucking, where the bird starts pulling out its feathers. This can be caused by various factors, including stress, boredom, malnutrition, or medical conditions. Ensuring mental stimulation, providing a healthy diet, and creating a stress-free environment can help prevent feather plucking.
Respiratory Infections: Dusky conures are prone to respiratory infections, which can be caused by poor air quality, drafts, or exposure to cold temperatures. Signs of respiratory illness include wheezing, sneezing, discharge from the nostrils, or difficulty breathing. If these symptoms appear, a visit to an avian vet is necessary.
Psittacosis: This bacterial infection, also known as parrot fever, can affect conures and other parrot species. It is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci and can lead to respiratory distress, lethargy, and diarrhea. Psittacosis is contagious to humans, so early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
Regular vet check-ups are important to detect any health issues early. It is also vital to monitor your dusky conure for any changes in behavior, appetite, or physical appearance, as these can indicate underlying health problems.
Breeding and Reproduction of Dusky Conures
Breeding dusky-headed conures in captivity can be challenging but rewarding for experienced bird breeders. These birds reach sexual maturity around two to three years of age, and successful breeding requires the right conditions, including proper housing, diet, and care.
A nesting box should be provided in the breeding cage, as conures prefer enclosed spaces to lay their eggs. The female typically lays between three and five eggs, which she will incubate for about 23 to 26 days. During this time, the male may assist by feeding the female and guarding the nest.
Once the chicks hatch, they will be dependent on their parents for food and warmth for several weeks. It is crucial to ensure that the breeding pair is well-nourished during this period, as the health of the chicks depends on the parents' condition. Hand-rearing the chicks may be necessary in some cases, especially if the parents are inexperienced or unable to care for them properly.
Dusky Conures as Pets: Pros and Cons
Like all pets, dusky conures come with their own set of advantages and challenges. Before bringing one into your home, it's essential to consider whether they are the right fit for your lifestyle and expectations.
Pros:
Affectionate and Social: Dusky conures are known for their friendly, affectionate nature, making them great companions for those willing to spend time with them.
Moderate Noise Levels: While they can be vocal, dusky-headed conures are generally quieter than other conure species, which is a plus for apartment dwellers or people sensitive to noise.
Playful and Energetic: These birds are highly active and playful, providing hours of entertainment with their antics and curiosity.
Cons:
Attention Requirements: Dusky conures need daily interaction and mental stimulation, which can be demanding for owners with busy schedules.
Potential for Biting: Like many parrots, conures may resort to biting if they feel threatened or neglected. Proper training and socialization are essential to prevent this behavior.
Long Lifespan: Dusky-headed conures can live for several decades, so owning one is a long-term commitment that requires ongoing care and attention.
Conclusion
Dusky conures or dusky-headed conures are delightful and engaging birds that can make wonderful pets for the right owner. Their friendly nature, moderate noise levels, and playful personalities make them a favorite among bird enthusiasts. However, they require a significant amount of time, attention, and care to thrive. By understanding their needs and providing a proper environment, nutrition, and mental stimulation, you can enjoy many years of companionship with these charming birds.
