Any idea on an age?
Spalding blue, around a week old by those shoulder coverts. Major imprint/hand taming risk still, so be careful how much handling you do in case it's a male.
Needs a high-protein crumble, preferably wetted to be soft but not soupy. If it has space to run around, you can go up to 28%, if not, stick around 24%. 95-105F hotspot for keeping warm. If it's been on raw ground, check for coccidia, they are really prone to dropping dead from it by around 10-14 days if exposed that young. Toltrazuril is preferred treatment over amprolium.
#I recognize that you're probably in a vet office with that background#but also I know even well read avian vets can struggle with peafowl since they don't come up much#so just in case#peafowl#peachicks#birds#asks

i'm too tired to write a fully informational post right now, but as we're seeing more and more cases of H5N1 on the rise (in animals and humans): if you work closely with any species that have high potential to be infected, PLEASE wear proper PPE and take precautions when you get home (thorough hand washing, changing clothes when you get home from work, not wearing your work shoes inside).
as for the general public, if you come upon an injured or sick bird and can't find anyone who will take it, aside from very large hospitals, it's because of H5N1. during surges of the virus (like we're seeing now in the western US), rehabbers have to limit what they take in because of how dangerous the virus is to the other animals in their care and also in humans. a lot of rehabbers are home-based and only have themselves or a few other people to help them take on cases, and it's more than reasonable to not want to expose themselves, their animals, or their families to this virus.
as far as i know from the research being published, we haven't seen any human-human transmission of H5N1 yet, which is GREAT. we are seeing cases in humans from people who have interacted with wild birds, cattle, and swine*. H5N1 is also particularly deadly for house cats, especially those fed on a raw diet. all the more reason to keep your cats indoors and not feed them raw.
*people as in those who work on farms or those who are involved in culling infected flocks of birds.
i'm happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability, although i am NOT an epidemiologist.

Now the tweet is showing signs of a respiratory infection.
His current struggle with sickness is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to deal with. But he’s got a vet appointment in a little over a week, so hopefully we can at least address this current issue.
I am so stressed and so tired, but I’m not giving up on him!
#personal#vent#pet sickness#we’re having a hard time but !!#this time we’ll be meeting with a more experienced avian vet#so fingers crossed we get more answers and treatment#and#I’ve been reading Pale to him every day#which has been good for both of us

2023 is trying to end me.
newt started limping a few days ago so I booked an appointment
Todays the appointment- morning I wake up and Mia can’t fly and she’s bleeding bad so I rush them to the vet.
Mia’s wing is shattered. she’s in an incubator, fluids, oxygen, and pain meds. Once she’s strong enough she’ll be getting sedated for x rays and they’re hoping they can just splint it. We won’t know until she’s strong enough for x rays.
Newt goes to get x rays for his limp, blessed this boy is calm as a cucumber and loves the vet so he didn’t need to be sedated. He just laid in their hand perfectly. No visible damage he probably just tweaked it on a toy- anti inflammatory meds and rest.
Mia’s stable for now, apparently she’s started preening so that’s promising.
#been here for 5 hours so far#if she makes it through the sedation i think she’ll be okay#I’m most terrified about the sedation#bless my vet she wasn’t supposed to work until noon#but they called her and she came in early#even tho another avian vet was here

getting his wellness check today :) i have to try giving him meloxicam again for his foot joints Sigh.
he was very well behaved at the vet tho, and he didnt even have to get grabbed so he was content to hang out and preen on the vet's hand
#he looks so tiny#because he us#is*#allen#budgie#our avian vet is like 50 miles away and just under an hour drive😑 but it could be worse and even when there was one closer its worth it#cause i really like her

SIGH. Own a bird, and you too can experience such exciting emotions as "what's wrong with you what did you do to yourself" and "this would not be an emergency for any other creature but you my child are made of tissue paper" and "why do you only ever do this to me when your normal vet is closed and we have to go to the Other Vet :((( ."
He's fine now, but like. So much drama for such a little guy. Ugh.
#bird yanked a blood feather out and then kept picking at it. thank you maurice this is the stupidest possible emergency#thank fuck i have a selection of avian and exotics vets near me#i don't like my emergency bird vet but like. at least I HAVE an emergency bird vet nearby. grateful for that.#ughhhhh what a day#fsp speaks

for everyone that had me performing surgery on a chicken on their school holidays bingo card:
that's so weird why would you even put that on there
....feel free to cross it off
#worst thing about having chickens is that most conventional vets won't treat them#and avian vets are impossible to come by#so having chickens automatically means you need to become very cool with a lot of stuff very quickly

never thought it’d be ‘why can’t we just boycott usamerica’ that would lead me to be like ‘oh well guess I gotta buy lukes signed cd’ but here we are
#if I told you I’m going to bed. I am now. for the third time tonight. attempt#I do wanna close my eyes I just get the best ideas when I do#anyway be thankful with me for big girl jobs and this thing called a b corporation#plus living with parents who don’t charge rent while I’m funding all the pets’ medical expenses#who who would’ve thought surgery with an avian vet is cheaper than rent. anyway. this is why I need to sleep. too random thoughts

Another bird died. god, poor ginger. She was the most gorgeous lorikeet and such a sweet quiet lady. I just don't know man. like what do you do when the vets don't give a shit? What do you do other than be the annoying keeper who they extra ignore when shit starts getting bad? Fuckin twice a day pain meds for a case of suspected sarco like what the fuck. Like some Ponazuril was tacked on but she was only on it for like 2 days!! Like no antibiotics? Nothing to try and treat as much as possible to try and save this bird? Idk man it's so clear the vets don't know what they're doing with birds, like literally our associate vet is like "well if it's not life threatening we don't need to see them" ARE YOU INSANE??? Birds aren't like mammals if things are that bad it's literally too late!! Avian medicine is preventative!!!! The second we tell you there's a weird behavior you need to be on that shit! But no it's just whatever until we come begging up to the hospital to at least look at our birds. I hate to leave the birds but I'm so heartbroken seeing this happen over and over and over
