alright it's time to find smth out
please note that with labels like flexitarian especially it's not about 'oh i never eat these things'; it's a sliding label with things like vegan and vegetarian and pescatarian where you can identify however you feel comfortable. some people just eat meat etc on special occasions or when they go out or when they don't have time/spoons to cook something nutritious, and that's perfectly valid!! whatever you're able to do has an impact that's felt and there's no pressure to do it to whatever standard we have of 'perfect' in our heads <3
#bringing gender labels to vegetarianism#kind of. we need a lot more validation in these spaces#again want to stress so much. literally no judgement based on what you choose. the important part is if we can we do smth#and if you can't then i believe you and you don't need to worry bc those of us who can are doing what we can#vegan#vegetarian#pescatarian#flexitarian#climate action#climate justice#food security#antibiotic resistance#bird flu#biosecurity#public health#human rights#feminism#biodiversity collapse

Angsty Shit: Pt 3
Fairies don’t belong in the city or suburbs, do they?
Life is not easy when you’re two-to-three inches tall and resemble a little moth or butterfly. If the natural world already having it out for you, you mouse-sized little creature, wasn’t bad enough- you look like a bug. Humans hate bugs.
Jon, by all logic, shouldn’t be anywhere near humans- if he had his way, he’d be right back out in his nice little field, terrorizing the other fairies and hiding in his cozy little home. But, this year, the local farmer decided he wanted that field too, and Jon has now found himself evicted. Unintentionally, granted, but when they started spraying bug-killer, Jon the bug-adjacent fairy had to flee, quickly.
So now he’s fled to the human city, and so far it’s been… mixed. He’s safe from that awful shit they spray the air with, but now he has to contend with the humans themselves. Indirectly, they’re a threat- their huge feet could crush him before they even realized he was there, or he could get clipped by a car, or kicked as they walk. He could get slammed in a door. He could get trapped. The human world is so, so big.
But that’s indirectly- directly, they’re monsters. That’s all he can think, watching them frantically rush kill spider, beetle or bee whenever it treads to close to them (Jon doesn’t like spiders either, but come on). Mouse traps are absolutely terrifying- they could snap his arm or leg in an instant. The poison ones probably would have gotten him, whatever was inside it had smelled good, and he was hungry- but the mice got to it first and he watched them die from it, so now he knows better.
The sticky ones… the sticky ones are nightmares. He’s seen the bodies on them- in a morbid way, it makes them easier to avoid. Those, he understands and can spot early, simply going around them- he doesn’t want to know what would happen if his wings got caught in such a thing.
However, sometimes he isn’t really looking where he’s going- particularly when he’s being chased by a cat. Fucking cats. They’re terrifying, their claws like daggers, their teeth like swords- he’s dodged them before, but there’s so many here, and they cluster around the human dens looking for food and shelter too. Unfortunately for Jon, they think he’s a perfectly fine dinner- he managed to get out of the cat’s teeth, thankfully (he bit it right on the nose) but now it’s chasing him and he’s hurting and oh fuck- now they’re both caught. The cat squalls, caught by the paw, and Jon flails around to avoid it- but he’s smaller and lighter and he gets stuck. Really stuck
The cat’s wailing is what brings the humans, and when they see it caught they hurriedly shout and try to grab it- Jon is dragged right up with it as they frantically try to get it loose. He can tell by the collar it must be theirs, and maybe that’s why they’re so worried (some humans like cats, he’s learned, and keep them in their homes, he’s mocked them from outside the windows often enough- maybe this is karma).
Somehow, they manage to get it loose, and the cat runs off limping with its fur bushed out, to hide- but then they spot him, frantically trying to tear himself loose, little wings beating, entirely stuck. And their tones change- ‘bug’, they call him. ‘Pest’. The insult of it makes him want to scream.
They freed the cat, but he doesn’t get the same treatment- perhaps because he is a ‘pest’, perhaps because a paw is one thing, and Jon, caught by the entirety of one side of his body, is another. Either way, they talk amongst themselves and Jon just has to sit there, trying to get loose and failing miserably.
They put him outside. Still stuck. On a pile of their human trash. The indignity- he’s not fucking trash!
The more he tries to get loose, the more it hurts- he’s tearing his skin, already wounded from the cat. He doesn’t even know how he’ll free his wings, because those will surely rip, and then he’ll be flightless in the human world, which is no doubt a death sentence. This whole trap might be a death sentence, actually, because he can’t get free and it’s cold outside and he’s hungry and he’s thirsty and-
Someone picks him up. Or, they pick up the trap, with him on it- Jon hisses, as best as he’s able. He can’t really turn his head to see them, but he hisses anyways, because what else can he do? He’s put in a box and put in a car. Some small part of him is a little awe-struck, actually, by that… he can’t help but be fascinated by their machines. Sure, he can’t really see it, but the purr of its engine sounds nice.
He’s taken home and put on a table and suddenly there is a very bright light being shone on him- he wants to hide so bad. All the rage has bled out of him and now all he wants to do is run away and die his miserable little death somewhere dark and warm.
The human pours something on him, something gross and oily, and starts messing with him, gloved fingers poking and prodding him, at the seam between his wings and limbs and the adhesive. Jon’s too tired to bite him, or do much- he chirps a little, but that’s about it.
And, gradually- he starts to come unstuck, little by little. The human holds him so he doesn’t slump right back into it, carefully freeing his wings, sore and damaged, but mostly whole. He didn’t break any bones, at least. The human lets out a sound when he sees Jon’s injuries, and the little, shivering fairy finds himself tucked up in a dish towel while the sink warms up.
He’s washed off- Jon at first thinks he’s being drowned, and struggles a bit. Then he tires out, and the human goes back to cleaning all the oil off of him, carefully scrubbing his wings and his hair to make sure he’s cleaned up. He’s dried off, and something is dabbed onto his wounds- Jon chirps, and tries to twist around to scrub it off, but they’re covered before he can manage it and he gives up the effort. It’s not too bad, really- Jon wonders why this human is being gentle, and what he’s doing.
The unpleasant bit is when he’s picked up, a syringe shoved towards his face. Jon snaps, hisses, and sinks his teeth into the human’s thumb. Then he finds himself caught by the jaw and he becomes frightened again, chirping with alarm. Whatever the first stuff he’s given is, it’s bitter, and he wants to spit it out but can’t quite manage it. The second, thankfully, is easily recognized- water. Water and sugar, and that, at least, he takes without a fight.
After that, he’s not really sure where he winds up, only that it is indeed dark and warm, set on a pile of soft things. Jon doesn’t have the energy to question it- instead, he just curls up to sleep, absolutely exhausted.
#hahaa tiny fairy angst. this time ft. Jon! ngl I based a tiny bit of this off of the amount of cat attacks we get in almost daily.#- small birds small rodents- the glue traps haven’t come in yet but I’ve heard they will. imagine how frightening that would be for a little#- fairy… but yeah. in a world in which little fairies were common I got to wondering if they would be labeled ‘pests’ or not and here we go.#but at least there’s a nice ending- thank heavens for Butler#tiny fairy AU#angsty shit#fun fact- any cat attack patient that gets brought in with even the tiniest puncture gets antibiotics. no hesitation. because cats have#- some pretty toxic stuff in their saliva if you’re a little mouse or bird.

Artistic rendition (from memory) of my cockatiel Matey's patient profile picture because it cracks me up
(His vet has informed me he's actually pretty good with being handled and medicated, but he just has to make a big show of being mad about it)
#he's on antibiotics for a crop infection but his blood test results are otherwise good!#he's had a bit of a rough health history because of a previous owner keeping him poor conditions#and he's rather timid and afraid of hands because of a lack of socialisation on said previous owner's part#but he's gradually coming out of his shell and he's now brave enough to commit dinner theft#my art#art#artists on tumblr#original#digital art#procreate#bird art#cockatiel

It's not great, exactly, given the possible chance of the spread of these strains of bacteria from wild birds to animals on poultry farms intended for human consumption. The potential risk right now is unclear.
…i guess this is good? at least they’re surviving?

Anyway while we're on the subject of public misconception towards living things (which is completely understandable because have you SEEN living things? There's like dozens of them!) here's a fresh rundown of some common mistakes about bugs!
Arachnids aren't just spiders! They're also scorpions, mites, ticks and some real weirdos out there
Insects with wings are always finished growing! Wings are the last new thing they ever develop! There can never be a "baby bee" that's just a smaller bee flying around.
That said, not all insects have larvae! Many older insect groups do look like little versions of adults....but the wings rule still applies.
Insects do have brains! Lobes and everything!
Only the Hymenoptera (bees, ants and wasps) have stingers like that.
Not all bees and wasps live in colonies with queens
The only non-hymenoptera with queens are termites, which is convergent evolution, because termites are a type of cockroach!
There are still other insects with colonial lifestyles to various degrees which can include special reproductive castes, just not the whole "queen" setup.
Even ants still deviate from that; there are multi-queen ant species, some species where the whole colony is just females who clone themselves and other outliers
There is no "hive mind;" social insects coordinate no differently from schools of fish, flocks of birds, or for that matter crowds of humans! They're just following the same signals together and communicating to each other!
Not all mosquito species carry disease, and not all of them bite people
Mosquitoes ARE ecologically very important and nobody in science ever actually said otherwise
The bite of a black widow is so rarely deadly that the United States doesn't bother stocking antivenin despite hundreds of reported bites per year. It just feels really really bad and they give you painkillers.
Recluse venom does damage skin, but only in the tiny area surrounding the bite. More serious cases are due to this dead skin inviting bacterial infection, and in fact our hospitals don't carry recluse antivenin either; they just prescribe powerful antibiotics, which has been fully effective at treating confirmed bites.
Bed bugs are real actual specific insects
"Cooties" basically are, too; it's old slang for lice
Crane flies aren't "mosquito hawks;" they actually don't eat at all!
Hobo spiders aren't really found to have a dangerous bite, leaving only widows and recluses as North America's "medically significant" spiders
Domestic honeybees actually kill far more people than hornets, including everywhere the giant "murder" hornet naturally occurs.
Wasps are only "less efficient" pollinators in that less pollen sticks to them per wasp. They are still absolutely critical pollinators and many flowers are pollinated by wasps exclusively.
Flies are also as important or more important to pollination than bees.
For "per insect" pollination efficiency it's now believed that moths also beat bees
Honeybees are non-native to most of the world and not great for the local ecosystem, they're just essential to us and our food industry
Getting a botfly is unpleasant and can become painful, but they aren't actually dangerous and they don't eat your flesh; they essentially push the flesh out of the way to create a chamber and they feed on fluids your immune system keeps making in response to the intrusion. They also keep this chamber free of bacterial infection because that would harm them too!
Botflies also exist in most parts of the world, but only one species specializes partially in humans (and primates in general, but can make do with a few other hosts)
"Kissing bugs" are a group of a couple unusual species of assassin bug. Only the kissing bugs evolved to feed on blood; other assassin bugs just eat other insects.

i'll tell you what converted me to being all-in on keeping cats indoors only:
living for a year and a half in a rural area with a sudden feral cat colony explosion on the property.
i moved in with my folks for a bit and at that time, one (1) stray cat mama had taken up residence on the property, but was too feral to let my mother anywhere near her. but especially after she brought three kittens around, mom fed her and the kittens in hopes they'd grow trusting enough she could catch for spay and neuter at the minimum. momcat stayed mean and hella wary, but the kittens would hang around a little nearer and play with my mom via long stick, but still wouldn't come close enough to touch or catch.
unfortunately, two of the three kittens were girls and started having kittens of their own before further progress was made, shortly after i moved in. and that was pretty much instant doom.
there were so many kittens. SO MANY. multiple litters. every time we turned around, more kittens.
we fed them. we hunted for and located the kittens every time anywhere on the property and would move them to a repurposed doghouse anytime a mama cat had them somewhere else, so that they could grow up human-socialized and we could spay/neuter them when they were old enough. (also it was a handy tactic to push the issue of the mamas getting more used to/trusting of us themselves. only really worked with one of them, though.)
and we watched them die.
we watched litter after litter of kittens never make it to the age they could be spayed or neutered. the moms stayed, for the longest time, too skittish to more than briefly touch, much less catch and crate for a vet visit.
it sounds like a silly joke to say i have kitten-related ptsd, but i absolutely do.
too many goddamn times i'd walk out of the garage and find the carport and gravel drive strewn with tiny bodies. others simply went missing, never to be found.
one in particular, i wish i hadn't found, and the visual literally haunts me still, almost a decade later.
i saw so many kittens die of snake bite, spider bite, wild dogs, birds of prey, hit by cars, respiratory illness, covered in fleas and eyes crusted with infection.
and we loved them all. scrimped for antibiotics if the vet could be convinced to give it to us despite our being unable to bring them in. bought flea collars and ointments. we cared for them and fed them and petted them and played with them, brushed their fur and cleaned up their little faces, put ice in their water in hot summer, rigged a heating lamp in their house in the winter.
and they died. horribly. that property is pocked with unmarked graves of kittens and cats.
all the best intentions, not enough resources, and it didn't matter anyways because the population went from three to almost twenty (at times, over thirty) in the blink of an eye.
they died and died and died. our hearts broke over and over again. the stress and anxiety wore us down like sandpaper. i think, by the end of it all, we managed to find less than 10 of them all homes, including batman the disabled kitten i found a home across the country through tumblr.
it was carnage and tragedy, frankly. and we were helpless.
it only ended because they started dying faster than they could be born, and because we finally caught the two remaining mom cats in traps and got them spayed.
the points about outdoor cats being invasive predators devastating to local wildlife populations is true and valid and important.
but i know cat people, and cat people who don't know better than to let cats outdoors. what matters to you is the cat itself, generally. the cat being happy and taken care of.
keeping cats outdoors, letting them outdoors, is not taking care of the cats. it's not protecting them. it's not giving them any happiness or invigoration that couldn't be provided to them as indoor-only pets with just a little research and effort.
they die. they get ill. they get hurt. they're at risk of predators, and cars, and disease, and carelessly cruel children and deliberately cruel adults. they're at risk of disappearing on you because someone else saw a cat outdoors and intervened to give it a better, safer life not in conflict with the local environment.
and if that offends and angers you that someone would just take a cat they saw roaming outdoors, even collared, and that it sounds like i'm endorsing that, i am, but not if you intervene and be that person yourself for your own cat.
if what matters to you is doing right by your cat because it's family and a living creature whose happiness and health and safety is important to you,
keep them indoors. not part time. always. exclusively.
edit: since apparently i need to clarify this, i'm saying cats should live inside, that they should not live outdoors, even part time. visiting the outdoors supervised on a leash or in an enclosed catio is not the same as even part-time living outside, and i am certainly not advocating against it.

first day
boss wanda maximoff x college student reader
about: y/n, a college student starts her new internship. she is off to a rough start but don't worry it gets better.
secrets untold au
You loved the fall, watching the leaves fall to the ground. The quiet simplicity of birds chirping, how they’d wake you up each and every morning. Every morning was a good morning in your head.
You were in on your way to work, a part time job as you were a college student. This “job” as you called it, was a paid internship with one of the most well-known film companies. Today was your first day there, you still couldn’t believe it.
Your heart raced as you approached the bold red stairs that led up to the tall building. You stood there for a moment, was this really happening? You thought to yourself as a woman with auburn hair bumped into you, causing you to stumble. You fell to the floor, your knee bleeding slightly. You groaned softly, looked at your skinned knee.
Your eyes glance up towards the tall woman in heels who had a frown on her face, you could tell she didn’t mean to do that. “Oh, I am so sorry honey.” She spoke, helping you off of the ground.
Her eyes trailed down to your bloody knee, she winced. “I have a first aid kit in my office, if you want?” She asked. You nodded, following behind her as she led you into the building.
Your eyes scan the room, there were a bunch of cubicles and a break room. This building didn’t feel like professional place of business though, the decorations felt homey in a sense. There were a bunch of pictures in frames, a lot of scenery and sunshines.
One photograph really caught your attention, you stopped in your tracks when you saw a picture of a really beautiful red-headed woman with green eyes. The woman hovered behind you, smiling at your interest in that specific image.
“You like that one?” She husked, her voice startling you slightly. You nod in response, “It’s such a good photograph, not just the quality but the woman in the picture as well.” Your eyes focused on all the little small details that could be missed by another’s eyes. Like the sparkle in the green eyes or the small grin in the photo that is hidden by an obvious frown.
“My wife. That’s my wife, I took that photograph myself. You think she’s pretty?” The woman smirked at you, your eyes notice the very obvious wedding band on her finger that you had not seen before.
You turn red, slightly embarrassed that you were fangirling over her wife, and her photo. You were impressed though, because it was such a good photo. “Aw, you getting shy on me sweetheart?” Her eyes burned into yours, it felt like she could see right into your soul.
Her eyes fall back onto your bruised knee, “Ah right, let’s go get that cleaned up.” She nodded, leading you to her office. Her office was huge, she had her own leather couch, fairy lights and even a wall mounted television. Your attention fell onto her shelf of cameras, which made sense since she said she took that photo from earlier.
She pulled a first aid kit out of her desk, “Come over here, will you dear?” She asked, digging through the bandaids and such. You sat on the couch, near her. Her hand brought your leg up, on top of her lap.
“This is going to sting a little” She hummed before wiping your knee with an alcohol pad. You groaned, feeling the intense sting. You were never one for pain, even the slightest amount would send you spirling. Which is why you were surprised that you were able to remain your composure before. But it’s like the woman could see right behind your wall, as tears started to form in your eyes.
She placed a bandaid on your knee, sealing the bruise after putting antibiotic cream on it. “All better.. Do you want me to kiss it better?” A warm smile creeped up on her face. You nodded shyly. That didn’t sound too bad, you thought.
The woman gently removed your leg from her lap, placing it back onto the ground. Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion, as to how she was going to kiss your knee if it was on your ground.
That’s when she stood up from the couch, crouching right in front of you as she made direct eye contact. As she got on her knees and kissed yours.
You could feel her warm lips on your knee, her hot breath tickling your knee. You groan softly, your heart fluttered. You couldn’t lie that she didn’t get you all flustered. She arose, helping you up.
“Well, you’re all fixed, sweetheart. Excuse my matters, I didn’t catch your name earlier? My name is Wanda Maximoff.” The auburn haired woman smiled.
You felt your heart drop when you came to the realization that this was THE Wanda Maximoff, as in your BOSS, Wanda Maximoff? This was not good..
“Y/N…. Y/L/N.” You mumbled softly, your eyes fell to your floor as you felt your gut drop.
"Oh? You’re Y/N, ah I was wondering where you were. You are my new intern. I bet we’ll be having a lot of fun together.” She chuckled, taking a seat at her desk.
Your eyes read her gold name plate on her desk. It read W. Maximoff.
