Since you know a lot about birds, I wanted to ask you this. Is it okay to share my own food with my parrot? Whenever I eat she gets really curious and tries to take a bite out of my food. Is there food I absolutely should not give her under any circumstances? Is it okay to give her things with cheese on them?
This is a tricky question because there's the Right answer and there's the Reality answer.
The Right answer is that your parrot should only eat what they'd eat in the wild, and pellets because it's difficult to actually provide the right balance of vitamins and minerals in captivity.
The Reality answer is that they're going to get their beaks on everything. And you're going to be tempted to share with them. And it's okay to do so in moderation.
For example, Mango freaking loves potato chips. She hears anything that remotely sounds like a potato chip bag crinkling and she loses her mind. The joy she gets from the occasional potato chip is immeasurable. I'd say she gets a potato chip once every few weeks, and she CHERISHES it. She eats it slowly, savors every little bite, even closes her eyes to (in my mind) devote all of her senses to enjoying it.
Is it good for her? Nope. Is she going to get one sometimes? Yup.
There are some things to avoid at all costs, especially including but NOT limited to chocolate. There is a lot of alarm around chocolate and for good reason! Cacao is bad for everyone, including us, in large enough doses. I will, however, admit that Mango has had an M&M before. Since it's milk chocolate, it wasn't cause for alarm—the cacao content is pretty low in a single M&M—so I didn't take it away from her. And oh boy, did she think that M&M was the greatest thing she'd ever had.
Some other no-nos would be anything with caffeine, because their hearts are already working at a high level. I've also read that onions and garlic are toxic, and I avoid them just to be safe.
Since you called it out specifically, for the record, cheese and other dairy products are going to risk giving them diarrhea because they can't process lactose. It's not going to kill your bird to have a bite of something with cheese on it! You just want to make sure she doesn't have too much.
Now, if you want to provide some fun "people" food, warm noodles are always a big hit. Birds have a poor sense of taste because they use their beak for everything, so tasting everything would be pretty awful. What they love is TEXTURE. Unflavored/unseasoned/plain rice cakes can also be a fun treat!

Saoirse did something in the actors on actors interview that she’s been doing a lot, which is to say something that sounds like it came straight out of Jack’s mouth. I don’t know if they’re very compatible or if he has had a huge impact on her. But her talking about actors that started out in theatre and bringing up Leslie Manville and Gary Oldman?? That came from Jack. Jack is the one who is constantly praising theatre actors, and the one who’s actually worked with both Leslie and Gary and praised them in multiple interviews throughout his career. She did say it was something she talked about with her husband, but to me it doesn’t sound like something they both thought about. It sounds like something he’s said and that stuck with her.
Reading this back it sounds weirdly accusatory and I don’t mean it that way 😭 but I believe her when she says she cares about Jack’s opinion, because a lot of the things she says sound like her parroting his opinions, not like thoughts she’s actually come up with herself
eh I mean I think a lot of the time someone tells us something and we’re like “yeah that’s true” - I feel like while I’ve had a fair few original thoughts in my life, I’ve also 100% “stolen” thoughts from friends and boyfriends/girlfriends and comedians I like and books I’ve read and interviews/podcasts I’ve enjoyed and actually anons on this blog lol. Like I’ve repeatedly heard or read thoughts that I’m like “now that you say this, actually…” Saoirse def stole a few friends’ thoughts on feminism in the past (Scarlett and Grace) and I think as big fans as of Jack we notice where she steals his thoughts lol. He probably does it to her too but I think it’s maybe less noticeable because he has verbal diarrhea tbh a lot of the time and she doesn’t as much.

The wind whips fast on your bare fingers, cool and quick and raising goosebumps in its wake. You blink in the haze of the early sunset, head lolled to the side of the headrest. It feels good.
“That’s where I went to high school.” Sapnap interrupts your thoughts and points a finger at a collection of tall brick buildings down a side street. The silver of the lettering is dull, but you can still feel the nostalgia.
“And you’re about to see the park that me and my friends used to hang out at after work and—actually, nevermind.” His arm drops to the middle console and he looks straight ahead with slightly pinker cheeks.
“Do what?” You ask, voice all sweet, and a grin grows on your face. You turn towards him and wiggle your eyebrows.
“Nothing. Homework.” He avoids your eye contact and hikes his hand up higher on the steering wheel. “Anyways— Do you want to get some food before we head out? I know a great place.”
You two were just coming to a close on your little trip to visit his family; it was his step-mom’s birthday and you decided to make a week of it. It was your first long-term trip with Sapnap, and also your first time meeting his dad’s side of the family. You were proud to say she loved you. His little sister took a little more effort to talk to you of her own volition, but soon enough she was on your side.
You have a couple hours to kill before making your flight back home, so Sapnap has taken it upon himself to give you a quick tour of his hometown.
“Yeah,” you decide, bottom lip popped out. “Can we get ice cream after?”
“Uh, duh.” The Neighbourhood’s Stargazing starts through the speakers and he reaches to turn it down. “I’m so ready to get home and sleep.” He stretches his neck in his seat, letting out an uncharacteristically inappropriate grunt when his bones pop. You make a disgusted face, nose wrinkling, but stretch your own back, slumping down in the seat. The day had been full of packing up and this horrible hike his dad liked to do early in the mornings, so you two were pretty beat.
“Okay, we’re here,” he announces three sleepy minutes later in his best attempt at a whisper. Lifting your head off of the corner of your seat, you blink in the setting sunlight as a yawn splits your face. “You’re so cute.”
“Shut up,” you mumble, and struggle to get your seatbelt off in that post-nap haze. You’d barely been asleep for thirty seconds, damn it. The air is a swampy heat when you step out of the car onto rocky gravel and nearly twist your ankle climbing over the curb. Sapnap catches you by the lower back, trying to hide his laugh but failing miserably. You slide him a dirty look, smacking his shoulder as hard as you can manage while limping towards the front entrance.
The door jingles when you two breach the doorway, alerting a bored-looking hostess that the circus has arrived. She looks at Sapnap a second longer than she should, eyebrows screwed together in silent confusion. But she leads the two of you to a booth near a large window, handing you sticky menus and promptly fucking right off to the host station. She nearly runs.
“Do you know her?” You ask, inconspicuously hiding your face in the search for their 24/7 breakfast menu. You feel his eyes on you.
“Don’t think so.” He leans on one elbow and slides his phone out of his jeans’ pocket. In the 25 seconds it takes for you to find their french toast and sides menu, he has browsed and closed his phone with an animatedly shocked look on his face.
“What?” You give him a weird look and put down the menu.
“I totally went to homecoming with that girl.” He eyes the hostess. You glance over at her again, meeting her gaze, and offer a polite smile. She turns away quickly, eyes wide.
“She’s cute,” you say, voice high and fake, and he drums his fingers on the tabletop as an amused look makes its way onto his face.
“Are you—?”
“What?” You reply right back.
“Nothing.”
Thank God the server comes up to your table then and starts asking for drink orders, or else you’d have to admit (sheepishly) you were a tiny eensy-weensy bit annoyed. Only a tad. But after requesting a Dr. Pepper and a water the conversation surrounding the nervous-looking hostess dies.
“I’m so hungry I think I feel my stomach shrinking.” You flop your head onto your arm on the table top and make a whiny noise into the stack of napkins your server left at the table. Sapnap rubs his thumb into the side of your forearm, touch warm and nearly dissolving the pangs of hunger and jealousy.
“You weren’t hungry an hour ago.” He lifts your hand to his face and plants a kiss on the back of it. Oh, pulling out the big guns, huh? “I would have made you something.”
You tilt onto your chin, pouting, and stare up at his cute face. His cute, scruffy, perfectly-kissable face.
“I think I got hungry staring at you for half an hour.” A mischievous grin grows on your previously-petulant face and he just shakes his head.
“I do have that effect,” he admits with cockiness in his tone, lifting his eyebrows and leaning back into the booth with his lips pursed.
The server returns with two glasses and takes your food orders onto their little yellow notepad. You chug the water down when they leave for the kitchen, getting your lap and chin thoroughly wet in the process. Sapnap just snorts at you and shoves the napkins your way.
“So,” you start, patting dry your jeans. “tell me what you were like in high school.” You cross your arms and settle into the booth, smirk on your lips.
“What I was like?” He parrots, sipping at his soda, looking thoughtful. “Firstly, a virgin.” You make a noise. Duh. Dude had a buzz cut his junior year. (You’ve seen the pictures. His step-mom particularly likes them.) “Secondly, I was actually— well, I wasn’t popular, but I had a lot of friends. We were all semi-athletic lonely band kids but we had fun. Had one girlfriend senior year but she went to Cal Tech in the fall and I didn’t. I, um, worked at a Dairy Queen in the summers and gained so much weight I had to lose all over again for Unified Track.”
“Relatable,” you comment, drinking noisily at your water. He fiddles with the paper straw wrapper and crunches it up into a ball. It goes soaring into your drink with a quiet “Kobe” and you just give him a look. He smiles toothily right back at you. “Stop being cute, I’m trying to listen to your story.”
“Oh, my bad,” he mocks. “Anyways. That’s what I was like in highschool.” You fish the paper ball out of your water and flick it wetly at his arm. It sticks and you choke on a laugh, cheeks puffed.
Two plates of warm food are set down loudly onto the table and you thank the server with a surprised smile, Sapnap mirroring you.
Two minutes of wordless chewing passes, minds occupied just by “food, me eat” instead of anything related to your previous conversation. You realize that Sapnap is one of the loudest chewers ever, and he realizes that you fail to notice the streak of maple syrup in your hair.
“C’mere,” he mumbles through a mouthful of omelet and hash browns and beckons you with his hand. You lean closer, chewing slowly, as he pats a napkin at the strands of hair trapped in syrup.
“Thanks, baby.” You take the napkin from him and pause your assault of the warm french toast before you to clean the sticky sugar out of your hair. He just watches you, half of a smile on his lips.
You two finish your food in record time. It’s borderline vacuum-like. There’s a short grace period where you just sit like two lazy cats, slumped down in the booth and holding your full stomachs. But the check comes soon after, and you both pay your way and are out of the restaurant without any mad dashes for the bathroom. A miracle, really, because of the American-like amount of butter you both consume.
“I’m a much more functional person now,” you mutter into the cotton of his shoulder, swinging your hand in his. He just hums in agreement.
“I guess we’re not getting ice cream, then,” he teases, and you just groan in response.
“I don’t feel like having diarrhea on a plane, unfortunately.” You sigh heavily when you have to split and get into your respective sides of the rental car.
The entire trip (somewhat roundabout because of the amount of side quests to show you things from his childhood) to the airport Sapnap is a chatterbox. He’s like this when he has sugar: either bouncing off the walls with energy or talking your ear off.
“That’s where my dad proposed to my step-mom. I was kinda young but I remember being surprised at how big the ring was— dude broke the bank for her.” It’s a little gazebo you catch a glimpse of through the trees in a park. It probably was an incredibly picturesque moment, and you can sense how much she must have loved it. With just meeting them this weekend, you can already see how much love those two have for each other.
You hope people can see how much you love Sapnap.
“Oh my God, it’s still there.” He points out the side of your window to what looks like a Dairy Queen that has been through World War 3. “My buddy Eric and I once spilled a gallon of that liquid ice-cream-shit all over the men’s bathroom.”
You shoot him a horrified look. “Why was it in the bathroom?”
He just smirks.
“—And that’s my Uncle Ron’s house. Had my first beer there.”
“And last, hopefully,” you add, pulling a disgusted face. The two story bungalow is cute, and one of your favorite colors: olive green. “That shit is nasty.”
He just shrugs and continues down the side street.
“Is this the park you were talking about?”
He pulls into the gravelly parking lot of a small clearing of tall trees, a picnic table and campfire sat squat in the middle. But he doesn’t respond, just turning the car off and climbing out. He reaches the passenger door without speaking, and opens it for you. You climb carefully out, confused.
“Come on.” He takes your hand and starts for a small path to the left of the picnic table. The mid-sunset shade envelopes the both of you.
“I hope this isn’t where you kill me.”
“No,” he snorts. “I just wanted to show you something.”
It’s just a few moments of stumbling through the damp underbrush before you’re coming face to face with a small, mossy pond that sits right underneath an incredibly old willow tree. He stops right on the edge of the rocky path and turns toward you.
“This your make out spot?” You ask between a grin as he snakes an arm around your waist and tugs you flush to him. Your innocent smile fades when you feel the press of his lips to the side of your neck, light and ticklish. Oh.
“No,” he murmurs, and just breathes you in. “I came here once—the night before I graduated highschool. And I told myself when I really really loved someone I’d take them here with me.” He sways with you in his grasp, a gentle and song-less dance.
You grip his shoulder tighter in your hand and lean into him.
“That’s— awfully romantic, huh?” Your voice is quiet. Almost nervous. He just makes a noise of agreement.
“So here we are.” His voice is the opposite of yours, all strong and confident.
You two just move together for a moment. The sun breaks through the tree canopy, shining bright orange down onto the glassy surface of the pond. Crickets and frogs chirp back and forth as the willow vines swing in a cool evening breeze. You watch nature come alive around you, suddenly grateful for the man in your arms.
“Don’t propose,” you whisper, breaking the gentle tension. A laugh breaks the silence and he’s pulling away to look at you. Maybe in disbelief. A strand of hair falls into his eyes and you brush it away, fingers stilling on his temple and sliding down onto his cheek. Stubble scrapes against the skin of your palm and he stares at you through those meadow eyes.
You realize in that moment that he is exactly himself. Of course he is. He’s Sapnap, and everything that encompasses that. Dark and light and fiery and cool. He always has been, and always will be.
You realize you wouldn’t mind if he proposed.

I was zoom chatting with my niece and nephew and the 9 year old asked « if O’Malley wasn’t a cat, what would he be? » (I adore little kid questions like this!! So out of the box and mind opening!) and at first my adult brain was like LOL he’s a cat what else could he be. But after just a second i instantly knew to answer « African grey parrot. » because this cat wants so much to be able to communicate complex things to the humans he would be over the moon about the ability to speak.
Like for example, two of the other cats in the house I would consider normal cat communication (the fourth cat has shared custody of a single brain cell and gets it on every other weekend. I love him and his empty skull dearly.) like they can communicate complaint, contentment, and demand, and you have to play a guessing game like « food? Walk outside? Pets? Did someone close a door? » Ect.
But O’Malley has the most diverse array of meows of any cat I’ve ever had, and understands enough human speech that you can have actual conversations with him. He has specific meows for asking where each member of the family is (well, one for each cat, mom, and then one for « where are humans? » for everyone else)
Like this (words between * are distinct meows he uses consistently. Italics are human words I know he understands so I say them slowly to him):
O’Malley: *where is apricot?*
Me: he’s downstairs honey
O’Malley: *thank you* (heads downstairs)
-————
O’Malley: *where is Harold?*
Me: in the living room
O’Malley: (heads to living room)
-————
O’Malley: *where is toy?*
Me: under the dresser
O’Malley: (heads to dresser, sticks his paws under and tries to get it out. Fails, sits up and looks at me) *help*
-————
O’Malley : *MOOOOOOMMMMM*
Me: in here baby!
O’Malley: (trots into room) *want*
Me: want what?
O’Malley: *want food*
Me: not now you just ate.
O’Malley: *NOOOOOOOOO* (dramatically flops on floor)
(I swear he must have picked this one up from the people because his « extreme displeasure » noise actually sounds like he’s saying « NOOOOOOO » lol)
-————
Me: (moves furniture around in the house)
O’Malley: (comes in the room) *NOOOOOO* (walks up to each moved item) *why* *why* *why* *why*
Me: it’s ok honey. It’s ok.
O’Malley: (hops up on my lap) *why?*
Me: (gives an explaination I’m sure he doesn’t understand but he seems to understand that I tried to tell him why.)
O’Malley: *i don’t like it* (this is a much smaller sound similar to the NOOOOO meow but he doesn’t seem to expect me to fix the problem with this noise, he’s just expressing himself)
-————
O’Malley: (hops up on windowsill) *SNOW!*
Me: yeah? (He understands this to mean « tell me more » and he usually adds more sounds to express himself)
O’Malley: (looks at me) *excited!*
Me: yeah?
O’Malley: *outside!*
Me: not now. I’m working now.
O’Malley: (sits down) *i don’t like it*
Me: I know. Later. Go play with a toy.
O’Malley: (long pause) *i don’t like it* (hops down and goes and gets his toy)
-————
O’Malley: *mom*
Me: (waking up)
O’Malley: *MOM*
Me: yeah?
O’Malley: *help*
Me: with what?
O’Malley: *sick*
Me: (sigh) did you puke
O’Malley: *help*
(He uses the *sick* meow any time he feels bad- if he’s about to puke, or did puke, or if he’s too cold or too hot or got bit too hard by another cat and it hurts later(he comes to show me his booboo and says *sick*) and he also uses it to alert me that Harold(who has digestive issues we are trying to sort out with the vet) pooped outside the litter box, which might be me reading too much into it but it seems like he is demonstrating an awareness that Harold is sick?? Like some form of empathy in putting himself in harolds place and understanding that diarrhea means Harold feels bad? That seems like a surprising amount of dots to connect for a cat but I’m trying not to underestimate animal intelligence until proven otherwise)
Vetblr and cat science people, have you seen a lot of this? I’m super curious to know how common this is. Out of the 13 cats I’ve had in my life this is the only one that communicates so clearly and consistently. Does he just have a wider range of sounds so I can understand him, and we as humans are just too deaf to understand the variation in other cat’s meows? Are my other cats trying to say this much to me and I’m just stupid?

Epilepsy is weird (and I learned something new about it)
Ok, so every now and then I post about epilepsy, specifically in parrots, because my African grey has epilepsy. Epilepsy is complicated, and difficult to treat, and there's a lot less info out there for pet owners, especially non-dog and non-cat owners. To recap, if anti seizure meds aren't working, try adding an anti-inflammatory med. Metacam is usually the first one vets go for, and it may work for you. It didn't work for us. Celebrex, the second try, did. There's research linking inflammation to refractory epilepsy, bipolar disorder, depression, and possibly other neurological disorders. I need to do a deep dive into the info and organize links for y'all, but in the meantime please Google it. It could help your pets, it could help you, it could help your child or someone else in your life.
If you notice that the skin around your pet's eyes suddenly turns blue or purple before seizures, that's constriction of the veins. My grey has that happen, it's bizarre, but epilepsy can affect literally any biological system. We use a vasodialator to manage it.
We also use three anti seizure meds: keppra, zonisamide, and gabapentin. As far as I know there are only two others that can be used on birds, phenobarb, and (maybe) potassium bromide. Potassium bromide tastes horrible, like really intense salt, and you have to limit salt intake in the diet because it counters the med's affects. It also did not work for us. Instant seizure every single dose. We don't know if the taste was so horrible it upset him so much he had a seizure, or if the med just reacted badly with his particular epilepsy. Pheno didn't work for us either, but it's the first med your vet will try and does frequently work.
For CBD, the way dosing in general for literally every med and supplement is worked out in the US is the company assumes the person taking it is 180 lbs. That's the standard. So, you divide the recommended dose of CBD by 180, then multiply that by your pet's weight. Sometimes you can stick with this dose perpetually. Sometimes you have to increase the dose by the original amount roughly every week. So if you start out giving 0.05 mL, and it turns out you need to increase the dose, you add another 0.05 mL to make 0.10 mL. The next week you add another 0.05 mL to make 0.15 mL, etc.
CBD doesn't always work. Sometimes it does nothing, sometimes it makes things worse, and sometimes it only works if you use THC as well. From what I've read online it's a 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC, but not if the CBD dose has to increase. In those cases from what I've seen you keep the THC the same and only increase the CBD. You can't overdose on CBD the way you can other meds, because CBD does not depress the respiratory system. However the dose will eventually get so high it's no longer financially feasible to maintain. If that happens the only solution I know of is to resensitize to it, aka stop taking it for a minimum of one month, preferably two. You don't need to wean off of it, but as the levels in the body drop the seizure activity will likely start to come back. Talk to your vet about a management strategy.
CBD and other oil based meds cause the crop to slow digestion. That's just what oil does to birds. Depending on how much oil your bird is given you may need to get a prescription for propulsid. The way you know you need it is that either big blobs of mucus just pour out of your bird's mouth, or their food does. They may throw it up, but with my bird the food just sort of flowed back out because the crop wasn't moving and there was no more room. Propulsid is usually a twice a day med, but we have to give it three times a day, once every 8 hours. DO NOT JUST GIVE A BIGGER DOSE.
The other thing about CBD and related meds is that they are immune suppressants, which means that your bird is going to get yeast infections, AND the gut bacteria will be thrown out of balance. You are going to need a bird probiotic. Give the recommended amount. If you give too much they get diarrhea. You will also need a prescription for nystatin. Symptoms of a yeast infection of the crop: voice change, reduced appetite, very sticky droppings that hang on to the underside, nausea and vomiting. And this brings us to the new thing I learned about epilepsy.
Nausea can trigger seizures. I don't know what the neurological mechanism behind nausea and vomiting is but part of it is apparently linked to my bird's seizure focus. The way I know that is we didn't tackle a yeast infection fast enough, he got nauseous, triggering a seizure cluster spanning two days. He had to be given a super strong anti nausea med to stop the vomiting, but even on it, every single sip of water triggered seizure activity. I could see his crop clenching and writhing every time, it was bizarre. He's doing much better now, but those were two terrible, heart breaking days. Stay on top of yeast infections. According to my vet they can be on nystatin pretty much forever if necessary, which we may end up doing instead of treating as needed.
Tl;dr anti-inflammatory meds can help, CBD can be helpful but does have side effects that need managing (see above), and nausea can trigger seizures. Also use a nose drop rescue med, not an oral one. It's safer.
Good luck, and good health. Stay calm, you can do this.

About 100 TSA agents have been sent home after it was believed they came into contact with Covid-19. The TSA will not try to track down passengers who also might have come into contact with sick people.

A former top Cigna exec rebuts Joe Biden's healthcare FUD (permalink)
In a recent and important essay, Maria Farrell wrote about the road-to-Damascus conversions that ex-techies are having in which they recant the damaging product design work they did and begin to campaign against their former employers.
https://conversationalist.org/2020/03/05/the-prodigal-techbro/
Farrell noted that these techies had missed an important step in their transformation from venal attention mercenaries to noble attention freedom-fighters: they had yet to hit bottom, to truly repent their earlier sins.
They skipped like stones over the waters of privilege, and never sank, unlike so many of their victims.
Contrast those journeys with that of Wendell Potter, the former Cigna exec turned whistleblower, who has devoted decades of his life to revealing dirty tricks and lies. Potter campaigns tirelessly – and shrewdly – for Medicare for All, and is always at pains to point out that the anti-M4A talking points his adversaries parrots were all developed by him, when he was on the wrong side of history.
Take this thread, rebutting Joe Biden's FUD about M4A, delivered in the midst of a pandemic that has been worsened by the 77 million un- and underinsured people who can't get care or screening and disproportionately work in food-service and cleaning.
https://twitter.com/wendellpotter/status/1237438497218105344
As Potter points out, Biden's assertion that M4A costs $35T is just a lie. Once you factor in the savings of not paying for private healthcare, M4A SAVES at least $450B/year.

Biden's plan to cap premiums on a public option at 8.5% of your income is more than double what M4A would cost you. The corporate plans Biden lionizes shackle good workers to bad employers, and put millions at risk of having their care arbitrarily withdrawn or limited. And, of course, private care doesn't cover much. Surprise bills, deductibles, co-pays, out-of-pockets… Our plan – a blue-chip employer's top-of-the-line Cigna plan – costs us $24K/year.
We're rationing our family's health care because in addition to the $20K/year we're paying out of pocket, Cigna refused to cover a pain procedure that my doc – the most-cited pain doc working in California, who runs a major university pain clinic – says I would benefit from. That procedure might let me get a good night's sleep for the first time in 15 years and allow me to live a more normal, pain-free life. But because Cigna won't cover it, it would cost $55K, which we do not have. So I'm foregoing it.

Ars Technica's Covid-19 explainer is the best resource on the pandemic (permalink)
I've been reading Beth Mole's outstanding science journalism for many years and I've always admired it, but even by the high standards of a Beth Mole explainer, this soup-to-nuts Covid-19 explainer is just spectacularly good work.
https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/03/dont-panic-the-comprehensive-ars-technica-guide-to-the-coronavirus/
Mole's calm and comprehensive coverage relies on the most reliable sources and turns the results of our best evidence-based studies into a coherent narrative, from the disease's origins to its spread to its symptoms to its resolution.
Just this symptom-by-symptom breakdown was enormously informative and filled in a huge gap that I had previously mentally signposted as "flu-like".
According to data from nearly 56,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients in China, the rundown of common symptoms went as follows:
88 percent had a fever
68 percent had a dry cough
38 percent had fatigue
33 percent coughed up phlegm
19 percent had shortness of breath
15 percent had joint or muscle pain
14 percent had a sore throat
14 percent headache
11 percent had chills
5 percent had nausea or vomiting
5 percent had nasal congestion
4 percent had diarrhea
Less than one percent coughed up blood or blood-stained mucus
Less than one percent had watery eyes
The sections on transmission, self-protection, and care during a social distancing lockdown or quarantine are likewise levelheaded, clear and informative.
This is a tab you should just keep open in your browser, IOW. Mole's updating frequently, too.

Boeing is even worse at financial engineering than they are at aircraft engineering (permalink)
Boeing is experiencing a potentially terminal slump. Between losses due to its 737 Max scandal (a self-inflicted injury), and the dropoff in travel during the pandemic, it has had to draw down its entire line of credit and institute a hiring freeze.
https://wolfstreet.com/2020/03/11/boeing-crashes-as-43-billion-in-past-share-buybacks-turn-into-existential-threat
Obviously, Boeing can't be blamed for the pandemic.
But you know what is absolutely the company's fault? Its financial engineering.
Since 2013, Boeing squandered $43 billion on stock buybacks, whose sole purpose was to goose its share-price.
As Wolf Richter writes, Boeing, this "master of financial engineering – instead of aircraft engineering – blew, wasted, and incinerated $43.4 billion on buying back its own shares."
The company just had to borrow $13.825B. Its shares are down 46% since March 2019.
The entire company – a jewel of American industry – might not survive, because it focused on short-term enrichment of shareholders, rather than safe aircraft or financial prudence.
Reality has a well-known anti-capitalist bias, part MMMLVII.

Senate Republicans kill emergency sick leave during pandemic (permalink)
Senate Republicans have killed emergency sick leave legislation, a move that will force millions of low-waged cleaning and food-service workers to choose between homelessness and potentially spreading Covid-19.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/coronavirus-paid-sick-leave-us-republicans-block-senate-bill-new-york-washington-a9395821.htm
The GOP says that paid sick leave will endanger the fragile bottom lines of employers and also that the feds have no money to pay for such a thing – despite finding it easy to blow $2.3 trillion on tax-cuts for the super-rich.
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/28/tax-cuts-trump-gop-analysis-430781
They also found $20 BILLION in the senate's sofa cushions to give to the Pentagon, an agency whose auditor found more than a trillion dollars in off-the-books transactions in its financial records.
https://www.defensenews.com/congress/2019/12/19/pentagon-finally-gets-its-2020-budget-from-congress/
Refusing to help poor Americans stay fed and sheltered isn't just cruel, it's lethally reckless, and it demonstrates the moral hazard of oligarchic capitalism. Subsidizing sick-leave would merely afford survival to millions of Americans, after all.
Whereas the crisis that this will produce – a pandemic that is made worse and longer – will cost billions more, but that money will go to the donor-class, the Beltway Bandits whose cost-plus, no-bid contracts will transfer even more money from the poor to the wealthy.
It's disaster capitalism at its worst. The Senate GOP is dooming you and everyone you love to the risk of disease and death because preventing that risk would help millions of poor people, whereas creating the risk helps a handful of ultrarich people.

a preview for domino effect:
“You’ve been going to the library a lot lately.”
James’s voice broke through the fog of jumbled words and idle half-formed thoughts and Kagome froze over her history book, hand stilling on the page she’d been skimming through. Her eyes flickered up to find her brother standing across the table from her, an eyebrow arched and arms crossed, and all she could do was blurt out an an unintelligible, “Eh?”
James snorted. Pulling out a chair, he dropped into without ceremony. “I said,” he drawled, plucking a book from atop a perilously stacked group of many and inspecting it, “You’ve been going off to the library a lot lately.”
She fidgeted, playing with the corner of a page from her book. “Well, we’ve been assigned a lot of essays lately,” she hedged. “Lots of researching to do,” she added, propping up her history book up for him to see as an example and mentally crossing her fingers he’d accept it as is.
It wasn’t a lie per say, but it was pretty weak as excuses went considering the time she’d been putting in the library of late was more on par to a seventh year revising for the NEWTs than a second year’s workload. Most of it was really spent on finding any information she could on basilisks and hidden chambers belonging to Slytherin’s founder. The former was easy enough but the latter was an effort spent largely in vain, hence her last ditch attempt of looking in Hogwarts: A History.
Even Myrtle’s story about her death, while interesting, didn’t reveal much more than what Kagome already knew – that she was killed by the basilisk but she didn’t know who ordered it.
She did, however, recognize a certain name when she mentioned it: Tom Riddle.
“Oh yes, Tom.” Myrtle let out an honest to Merlin giggle. “He was very dreamy. Perfect grades, all the professors liked him, even the Headmaster!” Her smiling expression turned upside down in a second flat, eyes filling with tears. “Of course, when Olive Hornby found out about my crush, she wasted no time to make fun of me and rub in how Tom Riddle wouldn’t look twice at “Fat, ugly, pimply Myrtle!” the ghost wailed, her voice rising with each word.
“Olive Hornby was a bitch,” Kagome couldn’t help but comment.
Myrtle’s wailing cut short and for the first time ever she looked at Kagome without an ounce of dislike as she fiercely agreed.
“Olive Hornby was a right cunt.”
While not exactly productive, the conversation at least seemed to warm Myrtle towards her, if only a little bit.
It still didn’t explain how Tom Riddle, a Hogwarts student from almost thirty years ago according to his special services trophy, managed to reappear in front of Harry twenty years in the future without aging a single day.
Magic, obviously, and not the good kind if he was siccing basilisks on schoolchildren.
Kagome absently rubbed at her forehead before sighing.
“You’ve been pretty quiet too, I’ve noticed.”
Kagome’s arm dropped to her side and she shrugged, eyes sliding away from James’. “Lots on my mind, I guess.”
At least that wasn’t a lie.
James hummed. The sound wasn’t very reassuring, and it made her nervous.
“Are you okay, Kagome?”
Kagome went still. Her brows furrowed as she swiveled to stare at her brother. His returning look felt heavy to bear. “…What do you mean?”
James sighed, a forlorn sort of quality beginning to bleed into his voice. “I mean, are you still having nightmares?”
“Nightmares?” she parroted almost immediately, taken aback and, quite frankly, panicking.
How did he know? Did someone say something? Did one of the girls overhear?
James was looking at her as if she sprouted a second head. “Madam Pomfrey mentioned dreamless sleep potions when you were at the hospital wing?” he slowly reminded her. “You only take that if you’ve been having bad dreams, which… would explain a lot, if I’m being honest.” He grimaced, “You look like shite.”
Kagome swallowed thickly, unable to even come up with a snappy retort.
When she didn’t answer right away, James sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “I’m just… worried, I guess. You’ve been looking, I dunno, kinda stressed lately?” he guessed. “Like… really stressed.”
Kagome pressed her lips into a tight, thin line and tried to ignore the guilt squeezing her chest. “I…” she trailed off, scrambling for another excuse.
Gods, she was so tired of giving excuses.
She sank into her chair, rubbing her face with both her hands. “I am stressed,” she admitted. “And I’m not sleeping well either. You’re right.”
“I am?”
Gods, she hated how surprised James sounded, no doubt because she actually admitted it, and once again she hated herself a little bit because she only had herself to blame.
“Super stressed and bad dreams,” she confirmed, dropping her hands away from face. James’s expression was one of deep concern, so sincere it made her chest hurt because now she had no choice to lie, even if it was only by omission. “Regulus still glares at me like I’m less than a piece of gum stuck to his shoe.”
James snorted. “Only eleven and he’s already perfected the look. Sirius tells me he learned it from their mum.”
Kagome was not surprised in the slightest. “No wonder I was getting chills,” she said, and managed a smile when James laughed. “The dreams… I’d rather not talk about them.” When her brother frowned, she waved him off, “Most of the time I don’t remember, it’s just… difficult to sleep, after.”
James didn’t look like he fully believed her, not that she blamed him because she did remember each stupid nightmare, but at least he was kind enough to let it go. “At least take Madam Pomfrey up on those potions then, okay?” he gently asked, and she nodded, not having the heart to tell him she’d already been brewing her own for a while now.
“Also, hey, speaking of the little twerp,” James scooted closer, leaning over the table towards her and his voice so hushed, she could barely catch what he was saying, “Did you know he’s been following you?”
Kagome’s head shot up, eyes going round. “What?” she said out loud.
Very loud.
So loud Madam Pinch practically materialized before them the very next second, looking very irate to match. Her eyes swung between the pair like a pendulum, heavy with warning. “No. Shouting.”
Meekly, Kagome sank in her seat and muttered an apology. Across from her, James was looking away, trying desperately not to laugh and failing spectacularly when what clearly sounded like a laugh escaped him, despite his poor attempt to smother it and pass it off as a cough.
Kagome swore she heard Madam Pinch’s jaw crack before she shouted at them to get out.
“And here I thought there was no shouting,” James not so quietly sniggered by her ear when they stepped outside the library door after Kagome had hastily collected her things.
Which, of course, Madam Pinch heard if the way the doors slammed shut behind them meant anything.
“James…” Kagome groaned, shoving him half-heartedly with her shoulder. “It’s gonna be like a week before it’ll be safe to go back there. And she’s definitely gonna be breathing down my neck when I do.”
James just waved her off. “You need the break anyway.”
Kagome shot him a dirty look. “I was gonna go look for some more books on, y’know, that thing we’ve been planning to do?”
James looked less nonplussed at that. “Ah…” he let out a nervous laugh. “Well, it’s only a week….”
Kagome sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Now what’s this about Regulus following me?” she demanded, following up with, “And why haven’t you told me until now?”
James shrugged. “I dunno, I didn’t think much of it at first?” he said, scratching his cheek. “You’d think he has a crush on you and was just being a creepy little stalker if it wasn’t for the fact he’s supposed to be royally pissed at you.”
“That is mean,” Kagome said, even as she laughed a little. Creepy little stalker was not a title she’d associate with Regulus, it was so ridiculous.
“It’s true. The last few times you’ve been leaving meals early he’s been getting up to leave too.”
Kagome pressed her lips together in thought, trying to calm her suddenly racing heart. “I mean, I don’t think he’s been making friends so couldn’t he just be leaving after he’s finished eating?” she asked, trying to be logical, because if he wasn’t, well… the times she left early were also the times she snuck off to visit Myrtle’s restroom.
She almost wanted to laugh, and only barely managed to tamp back the hysterical sound bubbling up in her chest. Gods… Would it be better that Regulus thought she was having random bouts of diarrhea or that she was sneaking off to do something suspicious in the restroom?
“Only the times when you leave alone though?” James asked, skeptically, and she grimaced. “But I mean, there’s also the fact I caught him spying on you through the bookcase in the library just little bit ago.”
Kagome stopped and stared. “Oh…” she said, her voice faint, “That’s… yeah, that’s weird.”
Concerning, actually. Very concerning.
James hummed, sounding much too smug.

Sounds That Scare Dogs — And What to Do About Them
The post Sounds That Scare Dogs — And What to Do About Them by Arden Moore appeared first on Dogster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. Dogs don’t need to see something scary to turn into puddles of panic. There are tons of sounds that scare dogs, unfortunately. Certain sounds that scare dogs can cause them to pace, drool, shake, shadow you or desperately seek a safe refuge like inside the bathtub.
Some dogs with noise phobias can become petrified with fear even before the dreaded sound arrives, because they pick up on pre-sound warning cues.
“My dog, Rusty, is terrified of the smoke detector in our kitchen,” says Nicholas Dodman, BVMS, professor emeritus at Tufts University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist and lead veterinarian at the Center for Canine Behavior Studies in Salisbury, Connecticut. “He has learned that turning on our indoor grill may cause the smoke alarm to go off, so he starts to shake and tremble with fear when he sees us bring out the indoor grill. So, I distract him in another room while my wife, Linda, works the indoor grill. Rusty has learned what we call a behavioral chain, a common occurrence in dogs with noise phobias.”
What are some common sounds that scare dogs?

By definition, veterinarians and animal behaviorists use the term “noise phobia” to describe the intense and irrational fear displayed by some dogs to certain sounds. It is important to make the distinction that fear is a normal emotional response to a real or perceived threat or situation, such as dreading the anticipated pain from a vaccination needle. However, fear can escalate to a phobia, an exaggerated and irrational response that can completely emotionally cripple a dog.
Topping the list of sounds that scare dogs:
thunderstorms
fireworks
loud trucks
gunshots
people yelling
squawking pet parrots
security alarms
smoke detectors
But your dog may develop a noise phobia to more unusual sounds based on past experience, such as the wheels of a skateboard, the buzzer on a game show on TV or the popping of bubble wrap used to pad packages.
Sounds that scare dogs are a pretty common problem

Sounds that scare dogs and escalate into noise phobia in dogs are more common than you may realize. Dr. Dodman estimates that close to 50 percent of dogs have some signs of fear and anxiety to sounds, sights and situations. But there is no study known that breaks down the percentage of dogs with fears or phobias to perceived scary sounds.
“Fear and anxiety rank as the No. 1 issue with dogs,” says Dr. Dodman, who ran the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts for more than two decades and is a best-selling pet author. “No one knows for sure, but it may have to do with their physical size, shape, structure, their temperaments and/or environmental influences.”
Most of Dr. Dodman’s canine clients being treated for thunderstorm phobia tended to be large and hairy. He has treated more breeds like German Shepherd Dogs, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Bernese Mountain Dogs for noise phobias than he has for breeds like Greyhounds, Shih Tzus or Dachshunds.
“A dog’s coat is a perfect receptacle for an electric charge, especially dogs with long-haired coats,” he notes. “Things and animals can get statically charged in a storm.”
Signs of fear

How a dog reacts to a fearful sound also depends on whether or not his best friend – you — are in the room or the dog is home alone.
“Clinical signs can differ, but if you are with the dog when the noise occurs, the typical behavior is for the dog to go into Velcro mode and be close to you, even press into you as the dog shakes and trembles with fear,” Dr. Dodman says. “But if you are not present to provide solace to the dog, separation anxiety is also usually present. These dogs are in extreme anxious states and tend to vocalize, have accidents on the floor and desperately try to hide or escape what they regard to be a house of horrors.”
Other signs of sounds that scare dogs can include: inappropriate chewing (your shoes, the television remote, etc.), drooling, excessive barking, diarrhea and vomiting, digging (including the living room rug), panting heavily, pacing and displaying “whale eye” — a panicky look in which you can see the whites of the eyes.
Tools to calm a noise phobia
While there is no one cure or one-size-fits-all solution to minimize sounds that scare dogs has or even make them disappear altogether, you do have plenty of tools at your disposal.
For starters, strive to be calm around your dog and avoid baby talk or panicky tones. Dogs are masters at reading our emotional states. And, consult a professional dog behaviorist or dog trainer to help modify your dog’s behavior. Keep in mind that behavior modification techniques build on small but steady successes, and you need to be patient. Never yell at your dog for his fear-related destructive behavior, as your dog could start to associate the loud noises with a punishment, too.
As for products, work with your veterinarian to see if these may aid the reaction in your dog: Anti-anxiety vests, ThunderShirts, anti-static jackets or even towel wrapping your dog to help him feel less anxious or frightened. If your dog is afraid of storms, you can try rubbing his coat with antistatic laundry dryer sheets.
Pheromone sprays and diffusers. These commercial products emit dog-appeasing pheromones that help some dogs calm down in stressful or scary situations.
Soothing music or white noise to help block out the source of the fear-causing sound.
Soundproof a crate or safe room for your dog to go to before a storm strikes.
Some dogs require supplements or prescription medication to help them cope with noise phobias, especially to thunderstorms. The popular go-to medications prescribed by veterinarians include clonidine, clomipramine, fluoxetine, benzodiazepine and Prozac. Keep in mind that your veterinarian may recommend a combination of these drugs or may prescribe for use before a storm arrives to minimize your dog’s response. Go to a holistic veterinarian if you prefer more homeopathic solutions like herbs, essential oils, Bach flower remedies or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Dr. Dodman shares one final key bit of advice: Don’t wait to get your pup or young dog treated for a noise phobia. “If your 10-month-old dog is starting to show signs of fear to a sound like thunder, don’t dismiss it and think you can just live with his pacing, because trust me, it will get worse if unchecked. I guarantee that. Get help sooner than later.”
When it comes to hearing, dog ears rule
Dogs have much better hearing than humans. Photography ©Azret Ayubov | Getty .
When it comes to a hearing contest, dogs have us beat, paws down. On average, there are about 12 muscles per canine ear that can be tilted, turned, raised and lowered to zero in on sounds at greater distances and wider frequencies than human ears.
Dogs can hear sounds within 67 to 45,000 hertz range as compared to people who can hear sounds within a range of 63 to 23,000. Hertz (Hz) is a measure of sound frequency or cycles per second.
That explains why your dog can be snoozing in an upstairs bedroom but hear you open a bag of potato chips in the kitchen and come bounding your way.

First week in Mazatlán
Buenos Dias! Jesús te ama!
The first week had a lot of ups and downs, but we are so thankful that God has been with us every step of the way.
Before departure: It’s been a whirlwind cleaning up, running errands, and saying our goodbyes here. It started off pretty bad as our red-eye flight to Phoenix, Arizona was the worst flight ever. We had to endure 5 hours of freezing cold with no blankets so a lot of us couldn’t fall asleep. Then what was supposed to be an hour layover ended up being a 5 hour layover. Finally we arrived to Mazatlan and we were warmly greeted with a big hug of heat and humidity. For those not familiar with YWAM, they are bases that created all over the world. Each base is different depending on what kind of building God provided. The one in Kona, Hawaii looks like a college campus since we were given acres of land, in Mazatlán, it was a hotel! So we get amazing ocean views and have access to see the skyline at night! Now it is not a 5 star hotel and it is pretty rundown, but I could feel the love poured out to this building to make it a home to any missionary who visits here. An A/C room is like heaven on earth here and although we have one in our own room, we are only able to use it from 9pm-9am, so we would have to find a public room at the base to have a/c. Another adjustments are the stairs since our base is a hotel and the elevator is small. The food here thankfully is so much better than what it was in Kona. Our dining schedule was another huge hurdle we had to adjust. Meal times were at 7am, 1pm, and 6pm. If you don’t make it on time within 30 minutes, all the food would be gone. Another hurdle was rooming situation. All 9 girls had to be in one room with one toilet and 2 showers. There have been many funky smells which are intensified with the humidity and hair balls in our room but we organized a cleaning system so we could keep our sanity. Lastly the water issue. Thankfully we have filtered water provided at the base but when we brush our teeth, we are not recommended to use the sink water. Also if we go out to eat there is a chance we could get diarrhea and many of us have already. So to sum it all, our team felt overall this week being a time of sanctification and discipline as we adjusted here.
Our schedule is super packed so our week has felt so full, but I am so thankful that our leaders prioritized carving out time for us to have alone time with the Lord and debriefing with our team. Before coming here, God really spoke to all of us the importance of unity and the debriefing session really allowed us to not only share but communicate our struggles and interceded for each other.
We had two days to do orientation and get acclimated to our living situation. Wednesday we did our first ministry which was bible distribution. We all carried 5-7 bibles in our backpacks, rode the back of a pickup truck, and walked in the heat to do house visit and distribute bibles. We split into small groups and I was with Sunny, Martin ( our spanish translator), and Grace. We were lost at first but then we found a house with a man staring at us. We gave him a bible and his mother came out with a wrapped wrist. She was 82-years-old who suffered from a multiple chronic fractured wrist, swelling in her legs and feet, and cataract in her right eye. She couldn’t afford medical care so we offered to pray for her. I’m not going to lie, it was not easy to pray for her cataract to be healed as an optometrist. It’s like asking God to reverse an 82-year-old from wrinkles and gray hair but I felt God impress my heart if I was going to dwell in my unbelief or obey. As I prayed for her, I felt the Lord leading me to share how God saw her as his darling little daughter. After prayer she teared up and shared with us how touched she was by our prayers. We asked if she knew Jesus and she said she did. We hugged and said our goodbyes. We then visited another house where we found a woman named Maria as well who was isolating herself since she had COVID. We prayed for her and Grace prayed for her since she had compassion for her situation since she herself had COVID last year. We gave her a bible and encouraged her. It’s always fun when we come home after dinner to hear everyone’s experience as we debrief together.
Thursday’s highlight was when we got to choose which ministry we wanted to be involved in that YWAM Mazatlan was already partnered within their community. There was soccer ministry, hospital ministry, bible distribution, Stone Island ministry, skateboard/surf ministry, children’s ministry, and government ministry. Children’s ministry, hospital ministry, and government ministry were canceled because there were COVID outbreaks so I ended up choosing soccer ministry. What happened to work out was that soccer ministry was actually a type of children’s ministry. We were able to play scrimmage with the local children which was great because there is no language barrier. After the local pastor shared a quick bible story and then we gave ice cream to the children. It was so fun to see the children laugh and have a great time.
Friday’s highlight was when we went to visit Stone Island’s ministry. Stone Island is not an actual island but a peninsula but looks similar to an island. There the population is majority indigenous mexicans and you have to take a 10 minute ferry from Mazatlan. There the people are living in huts with not much to live on but are one of the friendliest and humble people that I’ve met. We split into small groups and I went with Grace, KC, Bethel ( our translator), and YK. We listened to the voice of God and asked Him which way to go. It was crazy how looking at hindsight, the Lord really directed our steps to go to the specific people He has called us to meet. When we approached the hut and made eye contact with them, YK got excited because they had a lot of parrots and she had 2 parrots back at home but one died recently. She asked if she could see them and they immediately invited us. As we sat the grandfather recognized KC who played with the children yesterday so without him we wouldn’t have made a quick connection with the family there. They offered to give us food and we ate chicken and coke with them. One of the ladies there shared about her eyelid condition which she had suffered for over 10 years. She had a congenital tear duct issue and has received multiple surgeries here in  Mexico but they just made the condition worse. What was heartbreaking was when she showed us scars on her leg, neck, and forehead where they took pieces of her skin tissue to use for her tear duct surgery but ended up lying to her and selling her skin grafts. We prayed healing for her and after we prayed YK started to tear up and share what God has revealed to her..about how Jesus loved her so much and his heart grieved her situation and that He was with her. She teared up and was so touched. Her father also teared up and they asked how long we would be here and invited us to their home for dinner next time. They were so generous, pure, kind, humble, and beautiful that I felt so privileged to get to meet.
Saturday was our day of rest and it was just so nice to be able to do laundry since it gets so humid here and we can’t rewear some of our clothes. At night we went to the street market and ate mexican corn. While we were there a few children approached us and were so excited to talk to us because we were korean. They were huge fans of a korean band called BTS. They were so excited one girl started to cry and they all wanted to hug and take photos of us. We asked if they knew Jesus and we prayed for them.
Sunday we went to a local church in Stone Island and two of our members shared their testimony. I’m not gonna lie, it was so difficult staying awake during service because it was so humid and hot that day. This past week's outreach experience really has opened my eyes to see how weak I was and depending on my condition and external circumstances...it really affected me and my ability to love others. It was convicting to see how my love was conditional and a humble experience.
Prayer request:
1.Unity: We are already experiencing spiritual attacks from the enemy towards some of our members but praise God that we experienced breakthrough every single time we bring to light our issues during debrief. Please pray that we would continue to remember to love our team members as ourselves and to fight for our unity.
2. Divine appointments and salvation for the people in Mazatlan: We do believe there are many people ready to receive Jesus. Please pray that we would have a greater fear of the Lord more than man.
3. Health: Please pray for protection from COVID, stomach/digestive issues, back, shoulder, neck, and skin issues that we have been facing. That these ailments would not hinder us doing kingdom work her.
4. To focus our eyes on Jesus and have him involved in all that we do.
Praise Reports:
-We are seeing God’s promises already fulfilled in us! We are experiencing unity like never before. We have experienced supernatural healing and it’s amazing to see our team members be transformed by the love of Christ. Jesus is so so good!
Gracias!

Fic: The One With The Dog Mom and The Hot Vet
Chapter 4: The One Where Their Worlds Get Smaller
Link to the whole story on FFN | AO3  | Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
Summary: AU. Cosima is a crazy loving dog mom and Delphine is a crazy hot veterinarian. Cosima is also super gay. Other characters make pop in!
Cosima hums and taps her boots on the tiled floors of the clinic/hospital lobby. She was asked to wait outside as the doctor finishes her tests on the sick puppy, so they can finally find out what caused the illness.
Delphine walks out after Cosima finishes humming half of "Distant Travelers" by Mike Love (which in her mind she insists that the song was in no way inspired by her meeting the magnificent Dr. Cormier). The doctor takes off her gloves and addresses the pet owner as she stands.
"Well, Ms. Niehaus…"
Delphine starts before she was interrupted by the brunette.
"Just Cosima is fine."
Delphine nods and smiles.
"Yes, well… Cosima. I'm happy to tell you that it is definitely not the parvo virus."
Cosima exhales a sigh of relief, although she hasn't really been worried and upset since the doctor arrived.
"However, Pancho has some form of food poisoning. Did he ingest anything potentially poisonous, in the last 24 hours?"
Cosima's eyes widen and she racks her brain for any possible scenario that her beloved pup could have eaten anything to make him this ill.
"I, uh… I… No. No, there's just no way. His space is clear and I've only ever fed him dog food, treats, and boiled vegetables that are healthy for dogs. His sitters also strictly follows the list of things he can eat. It's just not possible."
Delphine purses her lips and also thinks of situations she can suggest to help the once again distraught pet owner.
"Well, did you change anything in his diet recently? Like the brand or type of dog food you feed him?"
Cosima looks at the doctor as if a lightbulb went off in her head.
"Actually, yeah. The grocery store at the corner ran out of lamb-flavored dry puppy food. I bought him pork-flavored ones instead. He started vomiting a little after he ate earlier."
"Ah. Pancho is most probably allergic to pork, then. Dogs, especially puppies, can vomit and have diarrhea from eating food they are allergic to and be considered food poisoning."
The pet owner slaps a hand to her face which surprises the doctor.
"Damn. So stupid!"
Delphine touches Cosima's shoulder and rubs her thumb over it briefly, trying to comfort her. This is an uncharacteristically soft gesture from the usually professional doctor.
"Well, it's not your fault. He is just allergic to pork. Like how some humans are just allergic to peanuts. You don't know it until you get sick."
Cosima nods, her scientific brain kicking in knowing that the doctor is a hundred percent correct. She still somehow feels at fault, however, because she was the one who fed her pup the cause for his illness.
The doctor hands her the prescription.
"This is the medication you need to give him and just keep him on an IV for all the fluids he lost. You can take him home soon."
Cosima smiles and accepts the piece of paper, looking down to hide another growing blush. She appreciated the doctor's attempts at comforting her.
"Alright. Thanks, doc."
"You're welcome. Bring him in again if there are any other problems. My phone number and the clinic's are also printed there. Au revoir."
Cosima thinks she has now developed a thing for french women; specifically, hot french women in fields of science. She's glad and thankful that she actually listened in French class in high school and that she doesn't sound like a cawing parrot trying to impress the doctor when she speaks french.
"Au revoir, Dr. Cormier."
"Heeeyy, Mrs. S!"
Cosima greets the Irish woman who was behind the cash register at the grocery the woman owned. The young woman moves to give the older woman a big hug. The hug is returned in equal warmth.
"Oh, hello, chicken! And hello to you, Pancho."
The older woman gives the puppy a good rub under the chin, making his tail wag and his hind leg thump. The pet owner chuckles.
"We're just here on a quick evening trip to pick up some dog food. Got any more lamb?"
"Yes, we do. I told Benjamin to never forget to restock it again. Wouldn't want to get Pancho here to get sick again, now, would we?"
Mrs. S. smiles warmly at her, looks at Pancho, then suddenly remembers something.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you, love, that Kira and I adopted a dog three weeks ago."
Upon hearing this, Cosima's eyes lit up like christmas lights.
"No way! What's his name? When can Pancho and I meet him?"
The irish woman laughed. Of course, nothing makes Cosima happier and giddier than puppies and dogs.
"His name is Babu. We rescued him actually. You remember our neighbors that moved out? Well, they left him behind, tied to his dog house, without food or water."
"Oh no…"
"We suddenly heard howling and it was so faint we weren't sure what it was. Kira told me she had a bad feeling and convinced me to check it. The poor boy was weak and hungry when we found him, all alone there."
Cosima's heart breaks for the poor dog.
"I can't believe people can be so cruel."
"Yeah. We took him to the vet immediately. He's recovering right now and has a better appetite."
Cosima smiles.
"That's great. Maybe I can drop Pancho one day and it can be a playdate."
Mrs. S. chuckles.
"Sounds like a great idea."
"Okay, Mrs. S, I better let you get back to work. A grocery store won't run itself."
Mrs. S nods and expels a breath..
"That it doesn't, chicken. That it doesn't."

Lmao I have to ask if you've heard JonTron's interview with Destiny on YouTube holy shit this guy
omg
ive had a number of asks like this on top of a posting backlog i want to get to.. i mean
fUCK
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OK so i went to check it out and:
youtube
this horsehit is 2 hours long…
i was gluing manga to a wall and cutting out lil jebs and gabs to hide on it while i listened to it because fuck (below is the cut out sheet i made lol)
Tumblr media
so i had my email open to write notes for later and this is what i wrote, no fixes or anything:
destiny is wrong -> 14 mins -14:30
both dumb at 16 mins for the commies and nazis statement. destiny is compared to commies for noooo reason?? I dont think destiny is backed up by communists???? as a bizarre kneejerk TU QUO QUe when jon tron is thrown a guilt by association argument from destiny because of the neo nazi followers of his. destiny says nazism is a race ideology while communism is an economic thing, i cant wrap my miand  around thisis. he has no idea what hes talking about. jon tron dumb cant adequently adders it either
none of them are using gaslighting right
jon tron loves saying tribalism
at 18:40 desitiny is ignorant as fuck with regards to riots. because he hasnt heard about it, therefore it doesnt exist, which is is about one of the most frustrating fucking things about this shitty clusterfuck of a debate besides jon tron asserting random made up facts and imploring destiny to look it up. Jon tron laughs and references the boiling frog analogy fittingly. Jon tron continues to bring in international examples while dentiny tries to reel it back to the USA and the USA alone. This is annoying on two fronts:
1. Jontron is merely refering to situations rather than go in depth, such as compare tibet to “displacing white perople” when what ttibet is experiencing is hardly comparable to american white flight since the chinese are engaging in conquest/imperialism/ethnic cleansing and the west just simply isnt replacing their own population enough on their own for their corporate overlords tastes, so immigration fills the economic growth hole for better or for worse in their super simplified concept of economy (see: economies stop growing when ethnic civil strife brings it to ruin). but destiny doesnt have a clue what happens outside of his boiases. ;et alone the country, to even call him out, howeever when destiny has the proper misinformation, he will assert things like how japan is dying off or worse off for its homogenity without backing up his argument as well. which is a sign of liberals generally being ignorant to world issues unless their favoured media makes it a big deal ie with japan needing immigration. It’s clear both jon tron and destiny are parroting shit in hilariously broken, scatter shot fasihion
destiny thinks america is the most diverse country in the world, which is fucking wrong. Both of these asshoelss are throwing out garbage statements that are flat wrong that benefit their respective close minded, unresearched biases. Niether of them know any better so they cant even properly dismantle eachother’s argument. Clearly jon tron, nor destiny showed up to the debate with notes or preparation, which is a given considering they are both hot headed gamer shithead youtuber Know-It-Alls becuase they heard something in passing before and just throw out the garbled memory of that soething in debate.
jon tron thinks white people are more libertarian?? for some reason? destiny throws out a garbled statement akin to that MY THING WAS MADE IN THIS COUNTRY WHICH HAD PARTS IN THAT COUNTRY DESIGNED BY THAT COUNTRY YADDA YADDA DIVERSITY IS AMAZING when all these components werent built by americans but by different nation states engaging with others/.
at 37 minutes jontron says rich blacks commit more crime than whites, with no source but smugly tells destiny to look it up, confounding the shit out of destiny and the chatroom becuase hes put the burden of researching a fact that doesnt exist on his opponent.
destiny has
at 42, destiny is called a virtue signaller by jon tron, who is running through a list of things he learned a week ago on a mr metokur video to call destiny, which is every bit as cringe and awful to watch as the australian mp who called another sitting member of government out for man splaining
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOXh5repOWI
desinty throws back a solid rebuttal that jontron side steps going “what im saying is…” and totally fuckign forgets what destiny even said 10 seconds later because jon tron is running through his recently learned, stupid diluted “”facts”” rather than listen and speak to any argument of destiny’s, especially in cases like this when destiny lands a solid question
at 45, destiny gussies globalization with how its great and necessary it is and how cutting off bringing in workers to make stuff in the usa (spoilers: jobs leave the USA, not come in) and trade would lower american standard of living since iiphones will be worth $3000 which is the most liberal, whitest fucking statement of argument because, while yes, iphones would get more expensive, but at least they arent being made in slave labour assembly plants where workers commit mass suicide in protest to their working conditions and that the west isnt pilfering the future leaders and skilled workers from these societies that need them most.
destiny, true to his ignorance, thinks cheap shit is awesome because its made elsewhere, unaware that it’s only so cheap because people die and get crippled in hot, unregulated slave labour factorys making his shitty overpriced electronics
desinty is right though that the american identity goes beyond just being white, because american culture is informed by its various ethnic gorups and peoples, for example it’s black community that does a disproportionately great job of establishing culure, music, activism and art for america as a whole
jon tron again doubles back, shifts the subject to other shit and starts talking about balkanization upon facing a solid argument
at 48 i start to lose my fucking mind because they are talking at eachother and jontron accuses destiny of deflecting when it is jon tron doing all the deflecting. jon trons smug laughter is grating
jon tron has to rely on telephone game “MUH EUROPE” over and over because he cant acknowledge that america is exceptional in how it assimilates and functionas as a melting pot in a way that europe fucking cant, which is creating the situations jon tron fumbless at with greasy game controller fingers to conflate with the USA in the first place.
desinty then claims that germany’s economy is doing great because of taking in refugees, here again he is talking out of his rose tinted ass because not only is it too early to tell if they are mkaing germany money or not, but that the reality is that they are likely a net drain on the germany given other countries and historic precedent
at 50 mins destiny thinks anti-abortion is a white christian thing, further enshrinign his white, middle class, youtuber ignorance. i guess catholic latinx or muslims are pro-choice
at 1 hour desinty says “its ok to keep a country frfom progressing as much as it can in order to maintain a rcaial identity"destiny clarifies it as “stifling growth” which is exactly what jon tron was asserting, to which he goes yeah dude, japan etc and this fucking knob destiny asks jon tron why he came to america instead of japan then, thinking his strawman homerun is about to take off - until jon tron says he was born in amerca.. destiny goes “oh… well…  y-your parents/// ijjuhhhUHH FUCK IM NOT TALKING ABOUT JAPAN IM TALKING ABOUT TEH UNITED STATES!!! which is about the best backfire ive seen all debate long considering the smug setup for it destiny had. furhtemore, what the fuck does “progressing” entail?? Neve raxplained
which is funny because when it isnt a country desinty can use as an argument against jon tron, destiny shrieks IM TALKING ABOUT AMERICA to disguise his ignorance unless it befits him (japan)
soon after though, destiny catches jontron on his shit about slowing immigration down so they can “enter the gene pool”
jontron couldve articulated around this but jontron is a moron, so, he just stutters and gets walked all over
i want to stab jon tron. laughing nervously is anot a good cubstitute for a credible argument
destiny stinks, though he fucking is destroying jon tron because jon tron is regurgitating even more  regurgitated shit arguments gleaned from someone else than destiny, who at points is arguing from his own values.
i have stopped paying attention rea
“that is what im talkibg about” -jon tron, who cant articulate what the fuck hes trying to verbal diarrhea for himself
“my oral ulterior motive is to maximize economic growth, and to maximize the slice of the pie for everybody in the united states” -destiny
destiny’s disposition is clearly and decisively about maximizing economic growth, but it rests upon ignorant hopefulness that these immigrants will arrive and abandon their cultures and become “american"this simultaneously exposes destinys humanitarianism as self serving (so long as it leads to economic growht:) ) which is partly why the immigration model in countries like sweden have completely collapsed (jontron touches on sweden but clearly has no fucking clue besides MUH RIIOTS) beause they took on an ABSURD amount of migrants and immigrants thinking it will pay for itself and transform sweden into a post-ethnic nascent economic power like a jr. america, except what the swedes have done is import a shit ton of people to be a “humanitarian superpower” and threw the lot of them into commie block ghettos and stopped caring about them, assuming they would naturally become swedes, permitting the transformation of these immigrant slums and neighbourhoods into economic and cultural parallel societies that frequently are violent toward swedish authorities and outsiders visiting their area, hence the term "no go zones” where police are instantly attacked and services like ambulances require escort.
“how do you grow an economy if the populatio n is dying off” says destiny, unaware that people can reproduce and will do so the moment people die off enough for real estate prices to collapse from housing supply outpacing demand and wages to skyrocket and make living costs manageable to have enough children to make replacement rate. You know. Naturally rise and fall and rise again. as humanity has done naturally for fucking ever and has fared PRETTY WELL without having to drive the environment and civil stability into the shitter for the ponzi scheme INFINITE GROWTH meme. Destiny argues this yet has no fucking clue what he’s arguing for. fuck destiny, fuck this argument, fuck “economic growth” that means demand from immigration and globalization that makes 600 square foot apartments cost $750,000 and ramshackle crackhouses cost $2million in vancouver. wow, im really feeling the economic growth, fucker.
jon tron brings up the disproportionate violence of black youths, but when asked to explain that, jon tron backs out and laughs about how destiny asking jontron to clarify that point is just like those shows on CNN where people are trying to “TRAP YAH”
Yah, jon tron, it’s called backing up your argument
jon tron jesterly mentions crime rates being consistent across africa when destiny addresses the court systems in america, as if jon tron’s hints toward his earnest views on race were subtle enough
destiny asks jon tron to name 5 african countries
why??
who cares
i am finding myself wishing i were arguing in place of eachotehr, because i see where they are both coming from but are too busy screwin g up their delivery to actually win a point over eachother
they are literally just talking at eachother and calling it a debate
Jon tron accuses destiny of bringing up irish and italians when its convenient
…as if jon tron doesnt bring up MUH YUROP and other whatevers when it’s convenient.
i hate this
they both suck t this. Jon tron has dug a hole through the earth and is now reaching escape velocity with his shovel and is soon to break earths orbit
jon tron brings up turks and iranians being able to assimilate into a culture than a romanian and hungarian would. If jon tron were knowledgeable to pursue this point, he couldve described how Kurds (an iranian people) and turks often fight and engage in conflict with each other in say, Germany to the dismay of germans who expected these groups to assimilate, forget their animosities from their homeland and become good forklift simulator playing germans.
i ahve wasted my hour
Tumblr media
i like how i stopped keeping track of time on the video and just started ranting, rambling at the halfway point
I loved it for moments like this tho:
Tumblr media
lmao
i feel jon tron is going through a PHILOSOPHICAL AND INFORMATIONAL BLOSSOMING which i guess is taking the red pill for some people. So he is on the same tier as a 16 year old who just discovered holohoax and bell curve graphs for the first time on a 4chan thread loaded with A. Wyatt Man drawings.
He will eventually (hopefully) research for himself these positions if only because he’s constantly being stomped and fighting people over these regurgitated opinions. Which means he is going to try and read up on them to better argue them. Which means he is going to have a hangover of sorts when he realizes what he’s done lol

Sounds That Scare Dogs — And What to Do About Them http://bit.ly/2UksOrS
