The Other Boleyn Girl (the Portman & Johansson movie)
well...let's just say i had in common what most historians reviewing the other tudor production peter morgan did (henry viii 2003), critique-wise....
that oblique critique dashed off; here we go:
eric bana as hviii...i mean, i don't know who i would've wanted instead, but this was not it.
i mean, this is kind of more attributable to the writing, but this was such a staid, somber, sullen henry (much like worsley's six wives doc, good casting, but bruh, was that personality ever not evident and he was a cardboard cutout)...not that that wasn't one of his dimensions, but he could also be giddy, life-loving, charismatic. frankly, even firebrand captured this better than tobg (altho, similar critique re: the SA scenes)
the henry percy arc was a mess. or, to be more specific, the henry percy arc thrown into relief with the other script choices was a mess (anne is actually crushing severely on hviii from the very start, and percy is her consolation prize, in the film, when it's usually the reverse, and like, i would be fine with this choice, it was at least something new and thus subversion of expectations re: the usual formula...if there wasn't that horrible SA scene with them placed around blackfriars to go with it). at turns, i'm not even sure why they used this source material as adaptation, if they were going to veer off it so severely, and the choices made here don't match the ones morgan made for his previous miniseries either (henry viii 2003, wherein she's deeply in love with percy, very genuinely frightened and wary of the king's pursuit, and has the memorable line of "as comfortable as prisons get" re: luxurious court accomodations circa 1525-6), which is weird...(considering in other places, like with the SA scene-- simply placed at different dates, but still in both-- and this exchange--he transposed excerpts of the previous script onto the new film script near, or total, verbatim...)
speaking of, actually, i think this would've just made a better miniseries, the structure of the novel would be more adaptable to that (i know it was, but like, one with a respectable budget, better casting, and six episodes, not three). there are so many scenes from tobg i would like to see adapted, it was long enough that it pretty much has an iteration of most of the ones in tudors (and sometimes, imo, better ones...like, i like the version of the scene where anne has her brat summer over catherine still making henry's shirts in the tobg novel > tudors' version, for example)
i didn't hate the relationship between norfolk and anne in this film, but i would've liked more time devoted to it and had it been more faithful to the novel, this dynamic where he's sort of (reluctantly) impressed by her... there's so few iterations with a relationship dynamic that's more of an alliance, with any affection, besides this novel i think the only other one that left an impression they even used to have an alliance or suggestion of affection was anne boleyn 2021
i have more, but, five items limit, so....tags

Been doing my annual re-read of The Dark is Rising (yes I do not read it at Christmas, I realise this may upset some of you) and naturally enough this has dragged me back to the godawful movie adaptation of it, and two things have jumped out at me this time around:
God, the Signs are boring. Like, they clearly tried to make the Signs visually distinct instead of the same circle-quartered-by-a-cross, but then they don't actually bother differentiating them in the script, so I can't tell which of their redesigns are supposed to be which. It's possibly one of the only actually creative changes they made, and the script kills it as much as it kills everything else. Also, this movie is like Dragonball Evolution in many ways, but especially in the realm of 'revealing something about the protagonist at the end of the movie that both wasn't in the source material and profoundly fucks up the timeline they've been trying to establish.
Somehow I only caught now that the Ginny Girl Stanton was named Gwen, which is... a choice. Look, there are three Stanton daughters in the book - Barbara, Gwen and Mary. I'm not going to claim any of them are especially well-developed, it's one of the problems of the Sequence, but Barbara at least has a personality. Mary has something plot-relevant to do in this book (which they can't include because for reasons lost to me they put the first beat of the most obvious character arc in the book at the end of the movie). Gwen is the literal definition of 'Just There'. I'd ask why the hell they named the younger girl character Gwen, but I think we all know it's because everything about the Stantons is supposed to be the Weasleys from Harry Potter, which is an adaptational decision that only gets worse with age.

The thing about the MCU's Peter Parker is that it's literally the story of an economically disadvantaged teenager raised by a single mother(figure) who's recruited by a billionaire war criminal to join the military as a child soldier in an attempt to secure a better future for himself, which ultimately results in him being left traumatized and penniless by the state once his usefulness has run it's course, except in this case you're meant to both side with the billionaire war criminal that recruited him and see this series of events as necessary and honorable. Things that make you go hmmm

i will never stop thinking about the winter's tale i will always be thinking about the winter's tale i will always be loving the winter's tale
#i will always be exiting pursued by a bear#tales from diana#text post#shakespeare#the winter's tale#for the longest time (and even still now) (but since i was a teenager) i used to say i had 3 firm favorite shakespeare plays#a midsummer night's dream / the tempest / antony and cleopatra#but ESPECIALLY midsummer and the tempest. and those two still are just. immovably special to me#i love every word in those plays i love every plot element. i love how they're two of shakespeare's original plots!#i love the imagination i love the metatheater i love the themes and takeaways i love the characters#but as i get older. alas i simply do not have three favorite shakespeare plays i have like 14#also relevant to how i read the wars of the roses tetralogy years ago but i cannot stop talking about them in 2023.#i have to be honest. i LOVED those plays as i read them but bc i was like 'well they dont top my favorites' i didnt think of them *as* that#but really what is it to have a favorite anyway? a rose by any other name would smell as sweet#on my first readings. my top 3 were my favorites that i had ever read (altho i had only read so many by then!)#i have now read most of shakespeare's plays. most of the great ones are not so obviously far behind those which i felt a sentimental#attachment to at an adolescent age.#i really cant imagine what the tempest or a midsummer night's dream would be like to me if i read them for the first time now as an adult#i bet id still love them! id still find them breathless. i have always been in the habit of rereading passages from them from time to time#enjoying art from them and watching the occasional adaptation etc.#BUT ANYWAY. im really straying from what i was originally going to say now. wow i just realized how much i rambled#i was going to say that i only read the winter's tale last year. when i was quite familiar w shakespeare#but i hadnt been reading him as frequently as i had when i was a teenager. was reading other authors for the first time instead.#the winter's tale was the only shakespeare play i read in 2022 actually#and even in a dry spell for shakespeare i really enjoyed that.#and of course then i went back to other things. but the more time goes by the more i'm like wow. the winter's tale#it really does equal at least the tempest in my mind w how much i enjoy it#also hamlet. i've never thought hamlet was my favorite (though ive always really liked it)#but lately ive read several great plays w similar themes and thought wow this is so good it reminds me of hamlet#(or maybe that's bc hamlet was more influential than say the tempest... well whatever!)

"The Firm" (1993) review
*Baby's first published movie review
*At least 90s Tom Cruise is the height of pretty.
Tumblr media
Right out of the gate, I can tell you that this wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen. It had a few good points for sure that I appreciated- I thought Jeanne did a respectable job as Abby, and girl was serving even at the funeral with that hairbow. Holly was also criminally underused as Tammy, who was my second favorite character in the book to Mitch. I missed queen Tammy. The autumnal aesthetic was also popping off and made me wanna eat some crunchy leaves. The jazzy soundtrack was good as music in itself, but a confusing choice for this movie that did not fit the mood and kept making me think I was watching “When Harry Met Sally.”
And that’s the extent of my praise; time to roast now. This movie is, I think, one of the most significant examples of why book-to-movie adaptations are always cause for some level of alarm. I could feel the filmmakers’ contempt for the source material emanating from the screenplay. The way that they were changing things even as minute and unnecessary as characters’ last names (Hodge/Hodges, Knauss/Krauss) and hair colors (Abby and Tammy are both magically redheads) just for the sake of changing them. And that’s to say nothing of the way the movie versions of the characters are devoid of any sense of nuance, and weirdly, sin? In the book, Mitch was a really interesting and relatable character because he was a person with flaws and inner moral conflict. He cheated on his wife (in a slimier way in the book too, I might add- no white knight scenario where he saves the girl and tends to her injuries) but never ended up confessing it to her, instead choosing to live haunted with the secret. He’s also a lot more demanding about money from the FBI and steals some extra from the firm as well, while in the movie he just gets a half a million and calls it a day. Additionally, he has a thinly veiled hatred for Abby’s parents and the book goes into much more detail about his own estranged family. Finally, his motivation for taking down the firm in the book is mostly about saving himself and the few he cares about, and less about going on some one-dimensional moralistic crusade full of monologuing about justice and the wonders of the legal system. But all of these flaws are what made Mitch human and his story interesting to follow. For me, personally, it’s not at all intriguing to watch a ~good character~ do ~good things~ out of ~good intentions~. Somewhat related but kind of opposite is also what they did to Avery- he was great in the book as the hedonistic loose cannon with no scruples who was slowly spiraling. And then in the movie they thought it was a good idea to throw in some weird redemption arc where he ~shows remorse for his misdeeds~ that felt so forced. Plus, this is me being picky, but Gene Hackman as a womanizing dilf was just not doing it for me.
Then there’s the plot, which had perhaps the most egregious of all the artistic blunders. Who on God’s green earth’s idea was it to water down all of the crimes Mitch had uncovered that the firm and the frickin mafia were accused of to… overbilling? The only thing Mitch gives the FBI proof of is that the firm was overbilling their clients? And then the mafia never gets prosecuted at all?? And this is noble and good for some reason because Mitch heroically refuses to violate attorney-client privilege and be disbarred, which in his state does not include if one’s client is committing illegal acts anyway so he could have literally turned over the mafia and still retained his damn license??? And this is also all on the premise that is trying so hard to be deep and edgy and philosophical: “well who’s really the bad guys, the mafia or the lawyers who protect them, huh?” Bro really thought he had something there but, um… both? It’s both. Oh, and then there’s no consequences for any of the information Mitch has given and the people he’s crossed, unlike in the book where he has to start all over in the middle of nowhere and leave everything behind, on the bad side of both the mafia and the government. In the movie, and I wish I was joking, he and Abby just hop right back into their old dinged-up car from the beginning and move happily to Boston like “Wow, that was a weird few months.” Ummmm... huh???
Overall, speaking of bad guys and their evil doings, the sense of dread, malice, and suspense that pervaded the book is just not there. I was constantly troubled by the feeling that something was Not Right, but didn’t know what, over the first big chunk of the book, and then once you know what’s going on, the stakes are so high and there is such a complex web of characters and their motivations and goals that you can hardly stand the stress and excitement wondering what will happen (which you do not feel sure about until the very last page). Sharing much less sensitive information and being on the bad side of fewer people in the movie, it’s hard to feel very concerned about how things are going to turn out, because the whole situation just doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. Nothing like the life-and-death risks of the constant chase from motel to motel and car to car over the last third of the book while Mitch, Abby, and Ray’s faces are also plastered all over the news.
This is all, of course, if one can even understand what is going on, which if you haven’t read the book, is really freakin hard. They tried to compress a book that’s more than an inch thick into a two-and-a-half-hour movie, which, though ambitious, is not a wise idea, especially when the book is already so convoluted with all its legal jargon and trying to keep track of all the characters and who knows/doesn’t know what. Honestly, the plot would have been much better executed with a “Fatal Vision” type miniseries, even just two parts, but preferably three-to-four. But alas.
The last thing I want to say, before I sign off of this unexpectedly long and hardass review, is: can anyone explain to me what in the fresh hell the random backflip scene was about? Because I can’t figure it out to save my life and it haunts me.

WHAT THE LADDER
A isn't working. The disadvantage of taking money from a top VC firm can be a tricky business, because delegation is endemic there. On a whim I studied Arabic as a freshman. This turns out not to be obviously incompetent or lazy, but you're not going to get rich by counterfeiting, talking about making money, instead of the angel's. When we predict good outcomes for startups, the qualities that come up in the supporting arguments are toughness, adaptability, determination. Some writers quote parts of things they disagree with to give the appearance of legitimate refutation, then follow with a response as low as DH3 or even DH0. What good does it do me to know that my programmers would be more likely to notice and complain. They'll learn a lot, and that can probably only increase your earnings by a factor of ten of measuring individual effort. DH5 we still sometimes see deliberate dishonesty, as when someone picks out minor points of an argument and refutes those. We'll bet a seed round you can't make for yourself. The structural change in the way. That's true now, and that's just as bad.
In this case, n is. That's why I'd use the word naughty rather than evil. In fact, you can't train them to be exceptional. They did as employers too. I thought I'd already put in so much time that it was the first thing we thought of. You're old enough to start a startup, what you want to go work for a couple more years, just as newspapers that put their stories online still seem to wish people would watch shows on TV instead, just as we were designed to eat are a few Birkenstock-wearing weirdos in Berkeley. But serfdom is not the only cause of variation in income would be bad for you. But here there is another layer that tends to obscure the underlying reality, the more it will suck. Let's run through an example. Professors are especially interested in people who can solve tedious system-administration type problems for them, but because the process of raising money itself can kill you. In fact consumers never really were paying for content, and publishers weren't really selling it either.
If you're among that number, Trevor Blackwell has made a handy calculator you can use to find out. Asking whether you're default alive or default dead. There is a lot of things practically all humans have in common, you'd also find they agreed on a lot. What kind of anti-dilution protection do they want? But that constraint has gone now. That was still in the future when you hear people saying that, you're golden. You're unlikely to have more than 10, and probably rarely as high as DH5 we still sometimes see deliberate dishonesty, as when someone picks out minor points of an argument and refutes those. So we've probably only discovered a fraction of what the finished product will do, but what new forms will appear. Many employees would work harder if they could skip the Artix phase and go right on to make something customers wanted. Of course, space aliens probably wouldn't find human faces engaging. Not any more. I'm right.
So while nearly all VC funds have some address you can send your business plan randomly to VCs, because they enjoy it. But while I'd spent a lot of the change I've seen is fragmentation. You're on the right track when people complain that it doesn't work so well for: the kind where it helps to have everything in one head is to focus more on their needs than your interests, and make the length of it: amateurs. When those far removed from the creation of wealth—undergraduates, reporters, politicians—hear that the richest 5% of the company so it could take care of themselves. As in software, when professionals produce such crap, it's not made equally. They lived in houses full of servants, wore elaborately uncomfortable clothes, and travelled about in carriages drawn by teams of horses which themselves required their own houses and servants. If I remember correctly, our frontpage used to just fit in the size window people typically used then. Structurally it is to an ordinary university what suburbia is to a city.
The professor who made his reputation by discovering some new idea is not likely to be true for longer. And moreover, that the cause is not some force that's pulling us apart, but rather that small groups can be select. The web is turning writing into a conversation. There is a very specialized business, as specialized as diamond cutting. Just make stuff and put it online. Money is a side effect of specialization. A surprising amount of the work done by individual employees, you can protest that you've been treated unfairly. Then you could see in the house, the herds, and the offerings at our end of the summer. I was as obsessed with that program as a mother with a new baby. But serfdom is not the only cost of hiring someone: there's usually salary and overhead as well.
This is my attitude to the site generally. A top-ranked professional chess player could play ten thousand games against an ordinary club player without losing once. A great programmer, on a smaller scale. But the way they talk about them is useless. The room suddenly got quiet. The idea that startups would do better to go off and work with a huge weight of expectation on his shoulders. Another way to be good. Some VCs now require that in any sale they get 4x their investment back before the common stock everyone else has. The reason it seems ridiculous to us to treat smells as property.
There was a lot of immigrants working in it will go to work for them long before they went public. It always seemed to us that the backing of a well known VC firm would make us breathe through tubes if they could. Now you can even hack together distribution. If people are expected to behave well. A physicist who chose physics over Wall Street in 1990 was making a sacrifice that a physicist in 1960 wasn't. It's not a coincidence. Within the office you now have to get rich, try spending a couple days in some of the fancier bits of New York or LA. He'd only been working on it. You also need to be the last to notice. If they made the experience good enough, audiences might start to prefer it to watching pirated movies at home. That's ultimately what drives us to work on your projects, he can work wherever he wants on projects of his own. But the same alarms in your head that it does in mine.

Movie recs! 1, 16?
Thank you!! :D
A film in the IMDB top 250
I have to go with Jurassic Park (1993)! It's use of practical effects is so cool and I do love dinosaurs.
16. A film whose main genre is Romance/Musical
One must wonder why these two are lumped together like this. But, I'll give you a rec that's a bit of both! The Sound of Music (1965)! I've been thinking of a rewatch lately, and the dance scene between Maria and the Captain lives rent free in my head.

Maximizing Retail Profits: Harnessing B2B Price Optimization Software
In the ever-evolving world of retail and e-commerce, businesses are constantly seeking ways to gain a competitive edge. Among the many strategies employed, B2B Price Optimization and Management Software stands out as a game-changer. Price optimisation and management (PO&M) software solutions enable businesses to oversee and optimize the prices of their goods and services. These services also provide a growing range of sales intelligence advice, such as best-next-action suggestions and customer churn warnings. In the industry, vendors either focus on back-office price management and product management roles, or they focus on providing real-time sales intelligence to sales representatives and B2B digital commerce websites, or both. Quadrant Knowledge Solutions, a leading global advisory and consulting firm, has recognized the significance of this technology in their report, “B2B Price Optimization and Management Applications, 2023”. Understanding the Retail and E-commerce Landscape
The retail and e-commerce industry is a highly dynamic and competitive space. Companies within this domain face the continuous challenge of pricing their products right to maximize profitability while staying attractive to their customers. In this context, pricing becomes a critical element of their strategy. Let's delve into some of these challenges:
Rapidly Changing Market Dynamics: Retail and e-commerce markets are highly volatile, with ever-shifting consumer preferences and market trends. Adapting to these changes in real-time is essential to stay competitive. Without the right tools, businesses risk making pricing decisions that are out of sync with market realities.
Intense Competition: In retail and e-commerce, competition is fierce. With numerous players offering similar products or services, pricing becomes a key differentiator. Setting prices too high can drive customers away, while pricing too low can erode profit margins.
Complex Supply Chain and Cost Structures: The retail and e-commerce sector often deals with complex supply chain operations and cost structures. Understanding the true costs associated with a product or service is essential for setting optimal prices. Traditional methods of cost calculation can be time-consuming and error-prone.
Customer Behaviour and Expectations: Today's consumers are more informed and price-sensitive than ever before. Their buying behaviour can change rapidly in response to various factors, including promotions, discounts, and market trends. Retailers must be agile in responding to these changes.
Competitor Pricing Strategies: Keeping a constant eye on competitor pricing is crucial. Businesses need to respond promptly to pricing moves made by competitors to remain competitive. Manual tracking and analysis of competitor pricing are arduous and inefficient processes.

B2B Price Optimization and Management Software: A Necessity
B2B Price Optimization and Management Software is the solution to these challenges. This technology leverages advanced algorithms, data analytics, and real-time market insights to help businesses make data-driven pricing decisions. It empowers retail and e-commerce companies to optimize their prices efficiently while taking into account factors like demand fluctuations, competitor pricing, and customer behaviour.

Dad!Rafe coming home to an unexpected visitor...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y/n sat on the couch, her baby gently cradled in her arms as she swayed back and forth, humming softly to soothe her. It was the end of a long day, and despite the overwhelming joy of motherhood, she was hoping that Rafe would come back home soon so she could have five minutes of ‘mommy time’. He had to leave today, much to his complaints, to go and check up on the Cameron Development office. She had encouraged him, why wouldn’t she? She knew how hard he had worked to get where he is, but it felt weird being alone with their daughter, the absence of his everyday presence for the past month was going to take a while to adapt to. Suddenly, there was a knock on the front door- a loud, insistent knock that echoed through the house. The voice that followed was unmistakable,
“C’mon, country club I ain’t got all day.”
Y/n’s lips curved into a small smile, recognising the familiar tone of Barry’s voice. She shifted the baby gently in her arms and rose to answer the door. When Y/n had first met Barry, she had been skeptical. After all, the guy was a drug dealer, and she knew well enough that people in that line of work weren’t exactly known for their warm personalities or moral compass. At first, she had kept her distance, unsure of how to navigate the relationship between Rafe's closest friend and herself. But over time, Y/n realised that Barry was a little different from what she had expected. He had never once treated her like an outsider, and while his exterior remained tough, he always showed her respect. Barry wasn’t as bad as people said.
In fact, they actually got along quite well.
As she opened the door, Barry stood on the other side, leaning casually against the frame. His eyes immediately flicked to the baby in her arms, but his expression remained unreadable.
“Hey Barry,” Y/n greeted, her voice soft and calm, “Rafe’s not back yet.”
Barry blinked, clearly surprised for a moment, then let out a low laugh. “Shi, my bad, princess,” he said, adjusting the weight of the bag he had slung over his shoulder.
“Wasn’t expectin' a welcome party.”
Y/n chuckled lightly and stepped aside to let him in. “You wanna come in? Rafe’ll be back in a bit- well I think...” Barry hesitated for a brief second, looking past her into the house before nodding.
“Aight, why not.”
Barry’s heavy footsteps filtered through the halls of Tannyhill, as he plopped himself down onto the couch getting comfortable, bag once slung over his shoulder now shrugged to the floor. Y/n navigated over to the kitchen, pulling open the fridge door, the cool air brushed past her face as her eyes scanned the shelves. She reached for a chilled pitcher of lemonade, balancing it with one hand while adjusting the baby’s position with the other. Grabbing a glass from the cupboard, she poured the liquid with practiced ease, the sound of it filling the quiet between Barry’s heavy sighs from the living room.
“Here”
She said softly, making her way back to him. With the baby still cradled in her arm, she handed him the glass. Barry took it, raising an eyebrow as he looked at the lemonade.
“No beer?”
He teased, a playful grin tugging at his lips. Y/n’s eyes narrowed slightly as she side eyed him, her head tilting just enough to give Barry a look that was equal parts warning and amusement.
“Don’t push your luck”
She murmured, her voice light but firm. Barry chuckled, throwing his hands up in mock innocence.
“Aight, aight, my bad mama”
He said, leaning back into the couch, the grin still plastered on his face. She rolled her eyes, but a small smile betrayed her as it tugged at her lips. Y/n eased herself onto the large couch, careful not to jostle the baby, who had begun to settle against her chest. Barry glanced over, taking a sip of the lemonade.
“You make this?” he asked, she gave him a glance, as she nodded, “mhmm.”
“S’good,”
He admitted, leaning forward to set the empty glass on the coffee table. As he looked to her his gaze softened slightly, he glanced at the baby in her arms, though he quickly masked it with his usual neutral expression.
“Man, Country Club got lucky with you," he muttered, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, "ain’t no clue how he did that.”
Y/n chuckled softly, her hand gently patting the baby’s back as her little hand fisted her mother’s top. “He’s lucky, all right,” she agreed, looking down at her little girl, “but I think it’s the other way around most days.”
Barry raised an eyebrow at her, his expression changing a little as he took in the sight of her with the baby, a quiet respect in his eyes that he didn't often show. He cleared his throat, leaning back slightly in his seat as he tried to keep his usual tough-guy persona intact. His voice was quieter than usual, and Y/n caught the subtle shift, the care hidden beneath his typically gruff tone,
“How she doin'? Been a lotta noise in here tonight.”
“She’s good. Just a little fussy,” Y/n replied, smiling softly at the baby, “She’s usually like this around bedtime, but I also think she just misses her daddy…”
Barry grunted, nodding as he looked down at the baby in her arms again, the similarity between the little girl and Rafe was uncanny. The baby had inherited Rafe's striking blue eyes and even her furrowed brow mirrored Rafe's intense expressions, a trait that often unsettled those around him. It was as if a smaller, innocent version of Rafe was cradled in Y/n's arms. Suddenly, a wave of urgency hit Y/n. She gnawed at her lip as she bounced the baby in her arms slightly before she sat up on the couch moving towards Barry, speaking out,
“Hey, uh, do you mind holding her for a second? I really need to use the bathroom-”
Barry blinked, eyebrows furrowing in hesitation as she now stood in front of him, still gently rocking the baby in her arms.
“Listen, princess, I ain’t ever held no baby 'fore”
He said, his voice slightly tight, clearly uncomfortable at the thought. Y/n laughed softly before shaking her head, “It’s just for a minute. I’ll be right back. Please?” She shifted the baby in her arms, her gaze imploring. After a beat, Barry sighed heavily, hand rubbing over his face, though there was no real anger in his tone.
“Shi, alright, I’ll hold her.”
With some reluctance from him, Y/n carefully passed the baby to Barry, watching closely as he took her into his arms. He held her awkwardly at first, unsure of how to manage such a fragile little thing, but Y/n gave him a reassuring smile before quickly heading toward the bathroom.
As she disappeared into the other room, Barry shifted uncomfortably, trying to find a more natural hold on the baby. His hands moved cautiously, but as he adjusted, the baby made a little noise- a content huff- and he relaxed a little. He glanced down at the little face staring up at him, and for a second, his usual bravado slipped. As he adjusted, the baby let out a soft coo and her tiny hand reached up, instinctively grasping one of his fingers.
Barry froze for a moment, his eyes widening slightly as the little hand curled around his finger. His face softened, a rare, almost tender expression crossing his features. He gently adjusted his hold, ensuring the baby was comfortable, and for a moment, he just stared at her with something close to awe in his gaze.
“Shi-,” he muttered under his breath. “You kinda cute, huh?”
Rafe walked into the living room, a bag of takeout in his hand, ready to settle in for a quiet evening. But as soon as he stepped through the doorway, he froze, his eyes widening in surprise.
There, on the sofa, sat Barry- his usually hard-edged friend, the man who’d never been the type to do anything too tender or gentle. And yet, there he was, with Rafe’s baby girl cradled in his arms like she was the most precious thing in the world.
Barry was leaning back against the cushions, completely at ease now, the baby cooing softly in his hands. His gaze was softer than Rafe had ever seen, his usually sharp and intimidating presence replaced with a strange calmness as he looked down at the little girl. Rafe’s initial shock quickly faded into a mix of amusement and disbelief. He raised an eyebrow, stepping further into the room with a quiet chuckle. Just as he was about to say something, Y/n appeared at the doorway walking to Rafe, looking over at the scene with a smile that immediately softened her features.
“Aww, Rafe, look at that,”
She said, her voice full of affection as she watched Barry with their baby. Rafe paused, his eyes flicking from his daughter to Barry, then back again. A grin spread across his face as he wrapped his arm around Y/n’s side.
“I think we got ourselves a new babysitter,” he teased. Barry’s eyes narrowed, and with his usual bluntness, he shot back,
“Shut yo bitch ass up”
“Hey! Watch your mouth in front of my daughter”
He said, his tone playful but with an edge of protection. Barry raised an eyebrow, but the tension broke when he let out a small laugh, shaking his head.
“Yeah, yeah- we best friends now, ain't we cuz?”
He muttered, turning his attention to the baby cradled in his arms. The baby blinked up at him with wide, curious eyes, her tiny mouth opening in a silent "O" before a soft, contented coo bubbled out. Her little fists wiggled, and she kicked her legs faintly, her whole body giving that jerky, uncoordinated movement typical of a baby her age. Barry’s grin widened as he pointed to her.
“See that?
Rafe shook his head, a faint laugh rising from his chest, “Man, she doesn’t even know who you are yet.”
“Nah, nah-” he replied confidently, leaning back on the couch. “She knows her uncle Barry, don't ya sweetheart.”
The baby let out another soft sound, something between a sigh and a happy gurgle, her tiny face scrunching in what could almost pass as a smile. Y/n laughed softly at the exchange, moving closer to the couch, with Rafe close behind her, his arms around her waist as they two looked down at their daughter. Y/n looked at Barry, her expression warm.
“You’re good with her, Barry,” she said, a note of gratitude in her voice.
Barry gave a small shrug, his usual tough-guy persona slipping back into place, but there was a subtle softness in his eyes as he looked down at the baby.
“She’s cool,” he said, his voice gruff but genuine, “ain’t as bad as people think.”
Rafe rested his head against Y/n’s as he watched his friend, amused. He teased, eyeing Barry with a grin.
“Just don’t get too attached.”
