Random Thoughts on a Very Specific Thing: When Companions Choose Companions
Okay, so, off the top of my head, this has happened four times in Doctor Who's televised run. I'm not familiar enough with EU companions to say anything about what happens there.
Companions have become companions for a variety of reasons. The new series has this idea that the Doctor only travels with "the best" and they usually choose their companions. The classic series had a lot of Companions via Circumstance. Dodo and Tegan thought the TARDIS was a real police box and just walked in at the wrong time. Ben and Polly saw the Doctor enter the TARDIS, got curious, followed him, and then he took off before noticing that they were there. Victoria and Nyssa both lost everyone close to them and became companions because they had nowhere else to go. Ian and Barbara were straight-up fucking kidnapped.
There have also been several stowaway companions. The Doctor didn't invite them, but they Insisted. There are very few classic series companions the Doctor chose. In Logopolis, Four even goes on a rant about it. It's actually a big stand-out moment when One invites Vicki to join him and this would go on to be a bit uncommon. Three had Liz and Jo basically assigned to him by UNIT. That's why companions were often called assistants back in the day. They were basically lab assistants. It was literally their job.
I could go on and on about this, but this thing is supposed to be about the four companions that were chosen by another companion: Jamie, Peri, Ace, and Adam.
Yes, I'm counting Adam for this, not because he completely counts as a companion, but because he was invited to be one and basically failed his test run.
Here There Be Spoilers for the episodes these companions debuted in and probably more.
It's funny how the four examples here are split down the middle. The blondes, Polly and Rose, chose companions to come with them, while the gingers, Turlough and Mel, chose companions to replace them. It also splits down the middle in that Jamie and Ace became the definitive companions of their Doctors, while Peri and Adam didn't work well with the Doctors the joined, with Peri not having much time with 5 before constantly bickering with 6, and Adam just failing completely.
I think some of the reason for this seems to be based on the mindset of the companions that picked the companions. Polly and Mel were mainly thinking of the new companion when they chose them. Polly realized that Jamie was in a rough part of history and maybe it would be nice to take him out of it. Mel spent a while bonding with Ace and realized that she could use a Space Dad.
Rose wasn't really thinking when she invited Adam along. She basically did it because she thought he was cute. 9 was never into it, just humoring her, and then they both sort of ditched him on his first trip to the far future. Look, Adam made his own bad decisions and shouldn't have been a companion, but he also shouldn't have been left completely unsupervised in an unfamiliar time period. He got that stupid computer thing in his head because it was basically required to do anything around there, and then decided to be stupid with it.
Meanwhile, Turlough was thinking of the Doctor. 5 didn't handle Tegan's departure well and admitted to being depressed. When he realized he was going to have to leave, Turlough was aware that the Doctor shouldn't be left alone while already feeling depressed and abandoned. So, he assigned Peri as a replacement.
The actual scene where Peri becomes a companion has 5 clearly reluctant. Either he's decided that he wants to be alone or he's just not that interested in her specifically. Turlough telling Peri to keep an on him probably factored in to him accepting her. Strangely, like with Adam, the Doctor took on a new companion whom he didn't like to humor another companion. The difference was that Turlough chose a better companion than Rose did, so Peri stuck around and the Doctor warmed up to her. That also connects to motivation. The reason Adam was the only truly bad choice is that it was made for stupid reasons. Polly and Mel were thinking "the Doctor would be good for this person". Turlough was thinking "this person would be good for the Doctor". Rose just didn't think.
This isn't me bashing Rose, by the way. Everyone's allowed to make bad choices. But, I admit, comparing her to three random classic companions in this situation doesn't make her look good. Rose was a good companion for 9. Her relationship with 10, no matter how much one might enjoy it, might not have been the most emotionally healthy for them. But, she still was a good companion for the most part. She just doesn't have very good judgement when it comes to who makes a good companion.
Also I did sort of accidentally parallel 9/Rose and 5/Turlough. I did not actually mean to do that.

[after The Long Game] Nine: Adam, I want to say something. I started this day disgusted and embarrassed to have you as my companion. And then later I thought we were going to die because you're a loser... Adam: Is there more? Nine: No, that's all I wanted to say [from Rick & Morty]

Not Far From the Truth (ten/rose) by kcchameleon
Rating: G
Summary:
“Left Mr. Broody, then? I knew you’d come to your senses about him eventually and-”
“Oh, yes. She most certainly did,” a voice cut in— the Doctor’s. She hadn’t seen him coming so she was even more surprised to feel his arms wrap around her waist from behind and his body melt into hers like it belonged there. She turned her face just in time for him to lower his chin to her shoulder. He definitely saw the question in her eyes as he turned his face into her neck, hiding a smirk. As he regained his composure he continued to spin the yarn. “Left that sorry, old sod in the dust, didn’t ya, Rose? Gotta be two years ago, hasn’t it? That’s about how long you’ve been with me.”
~~
Rose and the Doctor run into an old acquaintance.
For @doctorrosebingo prompt: "Self Sacrifice" (i posted this on ao3 on the 20th and totally forgot to post it here. opps)

I’m gonna say it, it’s pretty wild that Kate Stewart, a semi regular character since 2012 in numerous episodes and spin-offs hasn’t had her own Wikipedia page yet…
But Adam Mitchell with only two episodes and a disgraced actor gets one because he’s the ‘failed companion’

The Magnus Archives wiki describes the Extinction as
“The fear of catastrophic change, destruction of nature, destruction of human skin and tissue, the destruction of humanity itself and its replacement by something different; all of this especially via mankind's own causing. Manifests through human technology such as computers, code, and radio, and seems to present horrifying visions of what humans could become, or what could become of humans.”

cris watches dr. who: s01e06 - "Dalek"
Tumblr media
"E-le-vate!"
They're in 2012! It's funny how when the episode aired that was ever-so-slightly into the future and now it's ever-so-slightly into the past. 2012 wasn't so different from 2005: there were fewer LiveJournals and more Lady Gaga, maybe
Sometimes, I'm a little sad that I haven't seen the old episodes of Dr. Who, because I'm betting Van Statten's alien artifact bunker is filled with all sorts of callbacks that I don't understand
A Dalek! Even I know of Daleks!
Huh. I never realized it was Da-lek, not Da-lek
Hoo-boy the Doctor v. much does not like Daleks. Normally he's sassy but all in favour of a peaceful solution, but this odd li'l appliance robot makes him absolutely froth with rage
Aw, Emo!Dalek
So the Time War was a mutually destructive conflict between the Time Lords and the Daleks? Something tells me these two last vestiges of their races won't end up in an unlikely friendship
Stop torturing the murder robot, you goons
Stop touching the murder robot, Rose, you goon
I love how the Dalek is so obviously a relic from seventies sci-fi design - the way it looks, the shrill electric way it talks, the weird bumper tires - but he still feels menacing when he advances through the army base
I know I'm not supposed to be on the side of the depressed toaster oven, but I still kind of cheered when the Dalek managed to overcome the previously insurmountable object of the staircase
Once again, Rose's empathy is instrumental in saving the day
Alas, poor Dalek; alas, poor Doctor
8 out of 8 Tardes. New depth and history for the Doctor; absolutely chuffed with an episode that makes you feel both afraid of and sorry for a washer/drier-combination from the seventies. Also, Adam, so new character dynamics within the Tardis next episode! Kudos!

Eye of the Burning Hunter
Eric Carr's Eyes of Love (1989) is one of those fan favorites that unfortunately didn't make it onto a Kiss album. The indignation about this should be all the greater because in this case we are talking about the completely overloaded and somewhat indecisive Hot in the Shade (1989) of all things.
What the exact reasons may have been within a hopefully objectively functioning exclusion procedure is something everyone is welcome to think about for themselves, but hopefully not without at least taking a closer look at the music first. And why should you do something like this alone when it works just as well together and in the best of company?
So, Eyes of Love sounds admittedly less like Kiss in itself, or rather its somewhat unwieldy overall picture doesn't quite, but the individual parts it contains all the more. For the intro and main riff, for example, I can think of two reference sources that can both easily be assigned to Animalize (1984), the album that probably best musically manifests Gene's estrangement from the band at the time.
If you were now to hybridize Burn Bitch Burn (1) and Lonely is the Hunter's riffs, we'd almost have it, the point is just that Eyes of Love does somehow sound better than the other two both together (2), with a little more vibrant swing, which, once it gets going, gives it something quite nasty and monstrous. Unusual when something like this doesn't come from Gene, but certainly not unwelcome on my part.
But if you want to give it a little extra thought, you could ask yourself whether Eyes of Love isn't rather based on Killers' (1982) Down On Your Knees and tries to make something better out of its riff, which itself wasn't really able to do. A certain additional proximity to Down On Your Knees' middle part (3) would certainly speak in favor of this. But let's just leave it at that.
Apart from that, I can think of a few isolated bits and pieces that are reused here and there, serving as pads or whatever. Something that sounds like a higher swinging Plaster Caster (1977) riff, a certain The Elder (1981) touch as we know it from Only You, or a fill segment of When Your Walls Come Down (1987) and one of those rock n' roll standard licks that usually ends Rock and Roll All Nite (1975) live (4).
And although all the segments seem polished, the transitions flow smoothly and interlock like clockwork, it's still the not-so-simple song structure that, from my perspective, perhaps refuses to fit into Kiss' much smoother arrangement ratio of the time, thus naturally standing out quite a bit; and thus in some people's eyes, one looks in the direction of the two HITS, uhm… producers, might seem unfinished, or even useless. For their purposes. And not just to my regret.
Anyway, perhaps Eyes of Love only got in the way of Gene's and Bruce's not entirely dissimilar but much, muuuch more polished Prisoner of Love, but I prefer to continue to harbor my very own doubts about this idea. Basically, I'm only surprised that Gene didn't take it on and that it didn't fall into his clutches.
Probably because of the too many song credits. You know, less dough to share.
Wink emoji?
Side Notes:
(1) I mean even Eric's verse vocal sounds like the Burn Bitch Burn riff, with a slight biker rock and a AC/DC Highway to Hell feel.
(2) And I say that even though I like those Gene songs, especially Burn Bitch Burn. And I guess so did Eric Carr, because I happen to know that he loved to play Burn Bitch Burn live with its pumping drums and bass.
(3) Who remembers this part of Down On Your Knees, which bears an unmistakable resemblance to a song from Destroyer (1976)? You can refresh your memory of it right here, by the way.
(4) And no, I'm not going to highlight any of the links. That's too much fiddly work for me today. I'll probably cobble together some detailed Reprise entries out of this some day, or something.
I've limited the links to Eyes of Love, Burn Bitch Burn, Lonely is the Hunter and Down On Your Knees for the love of simplicity. Trust me, nobody loves too many links:
