Happy ace week!
Known as Albanian sworn virgins or burnesha, people like Leme (left) and Haki (right) practice a traditional Albanian custom that allows someone assigned female at birth to assume a male gender role by taking a vow of chastity. This tradition has been an accepted part of Albanian culture for centuries.
While each individual would have their own experiences with the practice, several sworn virgins interviewed by academics Antonia Young and Rene Gremaux in the 80s and 90s spoke about their lack of sexual desire, or the ease with which they had given up sex, suggesting that this traditional practice could form a space in Albanian culture for people we might understand as asexual.

Ace awareness “how to be a better ally” advice of the week: “Aces are part of the queer community” only means as much as you *act* like it.
Recently the thing I notice the most is people talking about a queer adaption/reading in contrast to an ace/aroace one—it betrays the belief that only the romantic/sexual aspects would make it REALLY queer, so an ace one wouldn’t count. I had this post in draft form for half a day and *five minutes ago* saw yet another instance of this.
I feel for stories specifically this language stems from the weird way ‘representation’ and ‘shipping’ get tangled up. (See: use of ‘queerbaiting’ for canonically queer characters that people want in a ship) It doesn’t make it any less alienating.
Ace stories and aro stories are queer stories. They’re worth telling and worth hearing and don’t need to be ‘upgraded’ to ‘actually queer.’ We don’t have to justify our place in the community with whatever element of attraction.

Celebrate Ace Awareness Week with The C.O.O.!
Tumblr media
Sometimes he holds all the aces, and sometimes he’d rather just care for his favorite plants. This Ace Awareness Week, it's time to celebrate our favorite aro-ace employee, the one and only Thomas Saggs!

The "A" Stands For Aro-Ace.
Happy Ace Awareness Week! I actually made these about a month ago as a project for my social design class, but I decided to wait until now to post it.
The last slide may be a bit confusing because...there is no link in my bio. At least on Tumblr. This was made to be an instagram carousel.
BUT, I will post the link right here! It has the sources I used to make this, as well as some others that have more information than I could get into in 10 slides (instagram limits you to 10 images per post). Feel free to check those out!
Enjoy!

It's Ace Awareness Week!!!
Jon is on the surface the stereotypical ace character- completley depraved of humanity, cold towards everyone around him and too busy for relationships, but through the story we watch him grow as a person, struggle with his own humanity and his disconnection with people around him. We see not just that he cares, but that he loves all those people around him and that he latches onto them till the very end.
I'm not that good at putting my thoughts into words, but I belive it goes without saying that, to me, as an ace person myself, who has struggled for so long with my own humanity purely because I've never seen a character like Jon, and to many other ace people, having a character like this, in somewhat-popular media, who has the same struggles as many asexual people (though ours don't feature the Eldritch horror, I hope), is SO important and so humanizing.
I don't know if Jonny Sims knew what impact making a main character of a horror podcast asexual would have on ace listeners - he probably didn't. But I hope that he found out.
Representation matters, you are not alone and stay safe.
Sorry for the rant,
Happy Asexual Awerness Week!

Ace awareness week: Golden Orchid Societies
Golden Orchid Societies were communities of women around the 19th and early 20th centuries in southern China who chose not to marry, or not to live with their husbands. Some Golden Orchid sisters had a solo wedding, showing their desire to remain independent from a husband. These women were known as "self-combed women", because they would dress their own hair before the ceremony, rather than having it combed by a married female relative, as was normal in a male-female marriage.
Some Golden Orchid sisters may have been asexual or aromantic. Others may have been women-loving-women, or had other reasons to avoid traditional marriage. Nonetheless, their history provides us with an insight into ace history, and what historical possibilities there have been for asexual people.

In other news, happy asexual awareness week! 💜✨️
Also, a friendly reminder that while ace and aro have a lot of crossover, they are different orientations and to be mindful not to conflate the two, especially this week.
