Here’s my only opinion on the whole Emilia Perez movie situation - before award season, I had never heard of this movie. That’s not me living under a rock, though honestly I do. It’s just that nobody I know - even film buffs - talked about it, no YouTube channels I knew reviewed it. I didn’t see it advertised, it’s been out since last October but I haven’t seen it on Netflix, nor have any music-based TikTok accounts or YouTube channels discussed the soundtrack. I genuinely have no clue where the hell this movie came from, was it summoned from the void to win BAFTAs and Oscars? Why is it more popular with the academy than Wicked, the movie that nobody has been able to stop talking about for months? Without sounding like an awful person, I think they picked this obscure movie because it has more diverse representation, even though Wicked is an allegory for racism and acceptance.

The Oscar race is on, and as a Brazilian, I can't help but root for Fernanda Torres to secure her place among the greats. But here's the bitter truth: her path is already being sabotaged. The Critics' Choice Awards came and went, and her absence wasn’t just a coincidence—it was a consequence of Sony's inexcusable failure to campaign.

Sony’s half-hearted campaign robbed Fernanda of her rightful momentum, focusing instead on Tilda Swinton—a strategy that ultimately fell flat. This wasn’t just a missed opportunity; it was a betrayal. And where’s the accountability?

BAFTA? Same story. And now, the SAG Awards, the so-called "actors' awards," are shaping up to be another example of systemic gatekeeping.

This isn’t just a misstep; it’s a glaring injustice. SAG members—those who preach diversity, inclusivity, and the celebration of actors championing actors—seem to forget their own words when it's time to vote. Fernanda's performance is undeniable, but will they even give her a seat at the table? This hypocrisy cuts deep. How can a group so vocal about diversity and opportunity fail so spectacularly to practice what they preach? (and...) the SAG Awards are so entrenched in their Hollywood-centric hypocrisy that it has become routine to hear phrases like, "She’s not """"American"""", so she doesn’t stand a chance." It’s echoed in journalistic critiques, whispered in industry conversations, and worst of all—accepted as normal. Normal????? How is it “normal” to dismiss talent because of nationality? How is it “human” to normalize this grotesque level of injustice?

The Oscar race is more than a competition—it’s a reflection of what Hollywood values. And if Fernanda Torres isn’t given the recognition she deserves, it will serve as yet another reminder of the industry’s hypocrisy.
