Ryan Goslingâs reaction to the Oscar nominations for Barbie
âI am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought Iâd be saying this, but Iâm also incredibly honored and proud that itâs for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.
But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.
No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.
To say that Iâm disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.
Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.
Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.â

Fendrix - Soundtrack for the film Poor Things (2023)
I've probably said this before but I usually don't post film music on this blog. Mainly because it's questionable how much a score for a film could be considered "classical" or of the classical tradition. On the one hand, the kinds of genre and styles used for films, and the specific function of the music as accentuating or being part of the overall finished work of the film makes it out to be its own unique genre. On the other hand, classical composers in history have written incidental music for stage plays as well as scores for films, from early / classic film scores by Saint-Saëns or Prokofiev or later in the century by Takemitsu or Glass and going through to today. Regardless I had heard this music before seeing the film Poor Things and was immediately taken in. I loved it so much that I was disappointed that it did not win the Oscar for best film score this weekend (though I won't complain much because the winning score by Ludwig Göransson for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer was evocative and intense so it was worthy of the award and praise). Still I have a soft spot for Jerskin Fendrix's imaginative and otherworldly music fitting for the equally "otherworldly" and fantastical atmosphere that the world of Poor Things tries to evoke. Yorgos Lanthimos is one of my favorite living directors and I was excited to see this film, even moreso after hearing the score. While I love the exuberant style, unique cinematography, and the dreamlike images, I will admit I was somewhat disappointed by the film overall (I didn't love it as much as I did his 2018 film The Favourite), and am still uneasy and disturbed by the subject matter and implications of an infant/prepubescent mind developing in the body of an adult woman, and all of the uncomfortable sex scenes and conversations as the film goes along. Still, I do love this score as a stand-alone album. Bella's theme is awkward, slightly out of tune and discordant, conveying the kind of naivety, curiosity, and somewhat self consciousness of being a "child" trying to understand the world they live in. The score continues with keyboard textures, detuned harps and winds, scratchy violins, vocalized oos and ahs, creating a lot of artificial and even alien sounds that disorients the listener in the same way that the wide lenses and porthole shots disorient the viewer. And later in the film (mild spoiler alert) when "Bella's" "real husband" arrives, we are made to feel sick and unsettled by the low frequency pulsing that makes us dread his arrival. A lot of textures and harmonies are unexpected in ways that make me wish Stravinsky were still alive so he could hear and share his thoughts. I especially thought of Stravinsky with my personal favorite track, "Portuguese Dance II", with violent and punchy, comically disturbed accordion chords that open into a catchy dance tune which may as well have come from one of his ballets. This same music gets its own awkward dance scene (another Lanthimos trademark) with Emma Stone's Bella and Mark Ruffalo's despicable Duncan. Again this is a bit different from my usual posts but regardless I hope you can enjoy the bizarre and wonderful soundworld that Fendrix created for this film.

the oscar nominations for 2023 are reflecting something that i have known to be true for the last few years. we are truly entering a golden age for Irish cinema.
an cailĂn ciĂșin (the quiet girl) and irish language film has been nominated for best international film. this is true amazing. it reflects not only that irish films are getting the recognition that they deserve but also reflects a greater importance being placed on the irish language. this nomination is so important as it is yet another example of the relevancy of the irish language in the 21st century. how can irish possibly be a dead language when movies like an cailĂn ciĂșin are being nominated for oscars?
there have been a lot of really good irish language films made in the last few years that havenât been appreciated properly by irish people and international audiences alike. i recommended arracht or foscad for anyone wanting to watch more irish language films.
and the banshees of inisherin. to see a movie that is so deeply irish up for best picture is a dream. and the thing about this film is that itâs so like a lot of other irish films that iâve watched in the way that the story is told, the form, and the characters. for me this is nomination isnât just for the banshees of inisherin, but for all the amazing irish films that have gone mostly unnoticed because people werenât paying attention.
another thing that i love about this film is that itâs a film about irish people where theyâre just people. their irishness isnât made into a joke, theyâre not shown to be alcoholics, or thieves, or any of the other negative stereotypes that have been perpetrated in film and on stage for years. the stage irishman is no more. the landscape is appreciated for its natural beauty, thereâs no tacky filter or editing to make it bright green and blue, because as anyone living in ireland knows, this island is overwhelmingly grey.
and what more needs to be said about the actor nominations. irish talent is finally being appreciated, and not just based on how well they could do an american accent. i remember reading an article a few years about saoirse ronan that said she had to perfect that american accent or she would have ended up on fair city for the rest of her career. striking to see how this has changed. i really hope kerry condon gets her oscar, she deserves it.
i used to think if i wanted to work in film iâd have to move to america but things are changing fast and i have to say i think the best of irish film is yet to come.
iâm proud to be irish and iâm so unbelievably happy to see irish talent being recognised at the oscars this year!!!

Hereâs an article based on your women director ask.
Following the nominations, the organization Women In Film, Los Angeles condemned the Academy for omitting women filmmakers. âOnce again, Academy voters have shown that they donât value womenâs voices, shutting us out of the Best Director nominations,â they said in a statement. âAn Academy Award is more than a gold statue, itâs a career accelerator that can lead to continued work and increased compensation. Thatâs why WIF will continue to advocate for the work of talented women directors like Sarah Polleyâs âWomen Talkingâ, Gina Prince-Bythewoodâs âThe Woman Kingâ, Maria Schraderâs âShe Saidâ, Chinonye Chukwuâs âTillâ, and Charlotte Wellsâ âAftersunâ, to be included.â
It honestly sucks so much and WIF are absolutely right for calling out the Academy.

#OTD in 1930 â Birth of actor, Richard Harris, in Limerick.
Actor Richard Harris was born in Limerick city on this date. Harrisâ career scored rave reviews (and another Oscar nomination) for The Field (1990). He then locked horns with Harrison Ford as an IRA sympathiser in Patriot Games (1992) and got one of his best roles as gunfighter English Bob in the Clint Eastwood western Unforgiven (1992).
