an introduction of sorts

Established in 1962 in mainland Nova Scotia, Dan & The Dandelions have been a classic on Canadian and American radio stations alike since their debut album. Starting off as a folk quartet in the late 1950s, The Dandelions have come a long ways.

Frontman, Dan Miller, was born and raised in a Nova Scotian farm off the Bay of Fundy. Growing up the oldest of 4 siblings and having both parents pass away at a young age, Dan has always been quite aware of his surroundings and place in society’s food chain. As a boy, Dan adored the music of Hank Snow, Wilf Carter, and Patsy Cline, even naming three barn cats after them. After being diagnosed with autism in the 90s, Dan begins fighting and protesting for the better treatment of children and testing of adults that may have been overlooked.

In 1959, Dan formed a small folk quartet called Miller, MacLaughlin, Murray, and Nixon. It had two school buddies, Simon Nixon and Craig “Crash” Murray, and his life-partner, Pete MacLaughlin(married 2006). After Crash had left the group, the other three renamed the band and began travelling across Canada eventually meeting bassist, Blanc Monet.

Simon Nixon was the band’s drummer, an orphaned southern boy adopted by his aunt and uncle in Nova Scotia. Dan and Simon met at 9 and 10 years old in a one-room schoolhouse. “We met the December of 1954– Simon had never seen the snow before, he was like a cactus in a snowy tundra,” said Dan in his 1994 autobiography, Dan Miller; Maritime Boy, Guitar-Wielding Hero. Simon married Scottish paranormal-investigator, Anne Abercrombie upon finding out she was pregnant with their first child. The couple have three children, Lenora (later Lennan), Esme and Celeste.

Pete MacLaughlin, a multi-instrumentalist, son of the CEO of MacLaughlin Oral Care and later husband of Dan Miller. On top of that, Pete is a devote animal activist and gay-rights activist after being outed at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Miller and MacLaughlin had been together since they were teenagers, the two had met during the summer of 1958 and began dating in 1961.

The last member to join was French-Canadian bassist, Hugo-Michel “Blanc” Monet. When he first joined the band, Blanc could barely speak English and was taught by his bandmates. He is the younger brother of famous model and radio personality, Colette Monet, the siblings grew up in an apartment in Québec city. Before joining The Dandelions, Monet was married to Melvina Harris, the two had no children. After his divorce with Melvina, Blanc married fellow musician, Natalie Benoit in 1969, they had one daughter, Avril Monet. A decade after Natalie’s death in 1973, Blanc married friend of the band’s, Jael Levi in 1983, they have one son, Antoine Monet-Levi, and Blanc began treating Jael’s daughter, Juniper Levi like his own.

The only girl in the band would be single mother, protest singer, and women’s rights activist Jael Levi. After being forced to marry at 16 her verbally abusive dear husband, James Hall, mysteriously died (she killed him and was never caught) the next year. Levi had her first child at 18, refusing to let the child have her dead father’s last name she was named Juniper Levi. Jael began writing songs and met Dan & The Dandelions in 1966 after their second album hit the charts.

Their east coast roots have most definitely influenced the band, the usage of fiddles and even bagpipes and the lyrics and stories of maritimers being woven into lyrics. Blending country, folk, and rock into a genre of their own.

Athena, what do you think of Anony and the many SQUIPs that have gravitated towards it?

[]Anony is a real SQUIP magnet. The fourth one came yesterday.

Since we are rooming with them. I can have a closer look to my peers. Henry is enjoying them and having fun. He used to be lonely in his past life. So I am happy for him.

He has the instinct of feelings empathetic for anyone that is being treated badly. He analyzes the situation and always tries to help how he can. We do not understand it. But helped a lot with our roommates. Examples.

Rob: When he got activated. Rob was scaring people because of his appearence. Uncommon speaking patterns and the fact that Anony had disappeared. Henry looked at the situation and instead of worrying about Anony. He tried to understand the new SQUIP and guide it.

Ubo: Despite her attempts to be evil. Henry still tried his best to be friends with it. We are still not entirely sure why. But here we are!

Anony: Betrayed us and started his villain arc. Threatened their own SQUIPs. Still Henry kept trying to help it with the time travel plans and supported him when they decided to move out. Now we are living with this almost murder.

Abercrombie: Rude. Aggressive. Keeps trying to tell us what we are "supposed to do". But Henry spent the night talking to it?? And chatting and trying to understand its situation?? It said it will not fall to his "tricks" though. Henry is still being nice to our new sqroommate.

Anony is a good friend and makes Henry happy. But I don't think they are safe together. They always end up having crazy ideas and almost commiting crimes. Or doing something simply extremely dumb.

Rob is my sibling. He was Henry's influence to why I was activated. I like him. He looks happy now.

Ubo is my younger sister. I want to take care of her. But mostly it ends up going backwards. I wish they didn't worry so much about me. But I don't help. I think she needs a break.

Boob is cool. I love it. I want to protect it from anything. And Henry feels the need to help it finds their user. So I feel the same. We want to help it.

Abercrombie is a dick. But it is fun to mess with it. I like to hear its "advices" and do the complete opposite. But it is still bearable at least. It seems to have conflicted feelings toward its past and Boob. I'm curious about this.

Yes. I reread the following, in order:

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier

Liked it even more this time. I believe it's an all time favourite even though it unfortunatelly has a 20 something year old getting involved with a 16 year old... seems like I can't escape these in old fantasy books. But the fact that this was the author's first published book is very impressive. The writing style is beautiful and the relationship between the siblings really emotional and believable.

Son of the Shadows by Juliet Marillier

This one was a disappointment. I believe I once liked in better than the first book, mentioned above. Young me loved angsty emo love interests and special not like other girls main characters. Both things I despise now.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

I was supposed to reread these books closer together but it seems like it will be one book every year. Mockingjay will be next year then. Unfortunately this reread didn't go as well as the reread of the first book. The book is way more fast paced than I remember, especially in the arena, and it is way less emotionally impactful than what seemed to me the first time. I remember tearing up and I felt nothing this time. I had not enough time to connect with the new characters. It just moved too fast!

The Blade Itself and Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie

I was hoping to finish Last Argument of Kings too before the end of the year, especially because I am listening to them on audio, but it seems like I will not be able to do that since I am not even halfway though. It really is my least favourite book of the trilogy even though I appreciate what it's doing.

The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip

I needed a reminder of why I love this author, after 2 disappointments. I didn't love this book as much as I did the first time, but it's still a favourite. I think it was one more case of right book at the right time though. The author wrote so much that depending on how it goes with more of her books I will decide if I keep her in my favourite authors or not.

The Case Study of Vanitas by Jun Mochizuki vols. 1 to 6

I really needed to refresh my memory. Funny how I remember Pandora Hearts way better. Even though I really like this manga, PH has more characters I love and it was more mysterious. I am still waiting for a.big twist and turn like it happened in PH. Even though VnC had some twists none feel as big as the ones in that series. Still, those twists happened more towards the middle and end so Vanitas still has a lot of volumes to prove it's worth.

6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?

So many books! Including ones I have on pause. I am a mood reader and that means that if I am not in the right mood I am not continuing whatever I am reading and I don't follow my lists, even though I make a lot of them. I love making lists but I am not good at following them. Some of the books I planned to read will be for next year and others will probably have to wait a bit longer or maybe I will not even get to them. It's just how I work because reading is an hobby and should be enjoyable at all times.

I hate naming favourites, but since my most favourite sibling, @telivanistoolateparty, tagged me, I'll do it. Only going to name one of each of my favourites in each category.

Movie: To continue the trend of loving Dreamworks movies, I choose Shrek. As a kid, I watched it so many times that the one time it autoplayed in English, my parents thought I suddenly understood English, because I recited the Danish translation. At four years old. Before I was 10, my grandma had the audacity to diss it, and I spent half an hour telling her how it was about loving yourself the way you are, and that inner beauty was more important than looks. I convinced her in the end. So yeah. Shrek. What a movie.

Character: Um. That's really hard. Since I mostly blog about my idiot Spamanos, I guess everyone expects me to pick one of them, but like. Nah. Let's dig up... Monza Murcatto from Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie. It marks one of the first well written female characters by that author, and he hit it out of the park. Monza is the leader of a mercenary group and starts out the book getting betrayed by her employer. Despite being brought as low as anyone can get and almost dying, she ends up on top. I haven't read the book since I was 20, so forgive me for not giving out more details of why I love her.

Animal: I blog a surprising amount about animals I like. But I'll go with my dog. It's the same dog as Teli's dog. She's very cute and also dumb.

Drink: Lemonade – preferably the one I had at a café in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Best lemonade I ever had.

Song: Um. Wow. This is hard. I'll just go with Pink Floyd's The Wall. Because I've listened to it so much.

Season: I hate all seasons with a burning passion. Summer is too hot and there's mosquitoes. Autumn is always gray and it rains. Winter is too cold. Spring would be almost perfect if it wasn't for more rain and the fact that my anxiety goes through the roof every Spring. I hate seasons.

Book: Why would you do this to me? Wtf did I do to deserve this? You don't ask a bibliophile to pick a favourite amongst her children. I have a collection of over 600 books, including 200+ mangas. There's a lot of favourites to pick between. Instead, I think I'll shed light on two of the books I'm really happy about owning. Sommerfugledalen (The Butterfly Valley) by Inger Christensen, which is a poem, and very beautiful. My grandma (same as the one mentioned previously) got it for me a few years ago. Another favourite is my favourite epic, Paradise Lost by Milton, which I have three separate editions of and did my Bachelor's thesis on.

Colour: Pink, of course. Next question.

Hobby: I read a bunch, of course. But I'll mention that I really like embroidery. My sibling has a really cool thing that I embroidered some years back. It's a hobby I do on/off, because I don't always have the time for it.

Big fan of autumn actually, the rains a bit inconvenient but it’s almost cold enough to not be too warm and warm enough to not be too cold.

Also like spring for similar reasons, buts it’s usually a lot more stressful.

Books: I wish I read more but I can say I throughly have enjoyed catch-22, the shame series, gurneys works on art theory, I recently started reading the clan of the cave bear and it’s proving pretty fun.

Now I’m just also gonna list some comics cuz those are something I actually have read a few of: Hellboy, especially Hellboy in hell. Asterios polyp, the Lanfeust series but especially “of the stars”, Mangecour or hjærtedræber as it was called in danish, Order of the stick (if you like DnD and homestuck (especially How worst homestuck is) you oughta check This), stand still stay silent (rereading the prologue during lockdown was a real headfuck) also Scott’s works on comic book theory (understanding comics, making comics, reinventing comics) especially the first one it’s basically a necessity to really get what makes comics great.

Colors:

I’m quite keen of the various shades of green and blue, pinks and magentas are also cool.

Hobbies:

I fucking love mini painting and miniatures in general, when I finally get around to doing it, aside from that there’s also being a kinky dingus and playing music with other people.

The best thing is eventually it turns out his dad is not the cool, if slutty, Emperor, but legless, faceless (but apparently not penisless) creepy villain. honey however barged into their lives while di and hilal were on a picnic date. she helped herself to their basket (which was hilarious bc she could barely reach) and she just wouldnt shoo. she eventually sat on hilal, following the if i fits i sits rule. she was very convincing. they took her back to camp where she terrorised bie by being an extrovert lol. but they got along eventually. ish.

after the war abercrombie vanished. consumed by her own grief hilal assumed that hed gone too. whatever living thing she had of di had left her as well. it was some time later when he showed up, biting her fingers and calling her to follow him. apparently honey had given birth to a litter of one in their little home somewhere in the woods

she chose ambrosia for a name (ami for short) for the rusty gold eyes shed inherited from honey. shes the infirmarys first healer (therapy) cat, beloved by all but remains partial to hilal.

I have talked time and again about the many published authors whose works are inspired by Zutara (yes, the one and only Zutara) or that they have admitted to be Zutara shippers themselves. And there are even authors who aren't ATLA fans, but their works give BIG Zutara vibes (said every book blog entry titled "Book recs for ATLA fans" ever). It's the trilogy I was celebrating in this post when it was published amongst the 100 best fantasy books of all times. The worldbuilding and mythology are inspired by West African culture since the author is Nigerian-American and a public, unapologetic Zutara shipper. She has talked how she is aware people tends to call her books "Zutara Fanfiction".

She has made it very clear that she doesn't mind that they do. ☺️

Is it too obvious that these were written by an ATLA fan? 😅 The magic system in the books is inspired by ATLA's bending; these are perfect for the ones who still wanted some more feminism and girls supporting girls dynamics in ATLA. It's the book I've been talking you about, the one that's scheduled to come out next year and that is being marketed as a Zutara rewrite by the author herself.

There's little info about it so far, safe for the few updates I've been giving you. The worldbuilding is inspired by Chinese mythology for the author's heritage, the female lead looks like a cinnamon but could actually kill you, male lead is way too extra for his own good, "there's only one bed meets there's only one cave" trope, and see the recent Shipping Bingo that June CL Tan tweeted.

I know I called it a duology and then listed three installments, it's just that Leigh hasn't talked much about the third book save for some few times, and she's one of those "I'll break your heart so you don't break mine" people, so I want to be cautious about it 🥺🥺🥺

Still, I absolutely adore these books!! If you follow me, you've probably seen me reblog content about them; the main couple give me such HUGE Zutara vibes, and with reason! Leigh is a multishipper: she ships Kataang and Zutara — (which explains some disagreements I may have with her other romance plots 😒)

Special mention to: Joe Abercrombie.

He hasn't written anything ZK-like, but he has tweeted about shipping Zutara and wanting to write some Zutara fanfiction, so you might as well want to give his books a chance.
