#AUTISM IS A SPECTRUM

It shocks me how many people don’t realise that the autism spectrum isn’t this:
Tumblr media
That is in fact a very outdated and in many ways insulting…
THIS IS WHAT THE SPECTRUM IS:
Tumblr media
And it is actually incorrect to say “well everyone is somewhere on the spectrum”
Someone may show traits that are associated with autism but that doesn’t mean they are on the spectrum but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are autistic,
Just like someone who is autistic may show traits of people who are neurotypical.
When I am speaking to friends who may use incorrect language or may have outdated information of what the spectrum is, I explain to them why it is important to change how we view and talk about being neurotypical. None of them are intentionally being offensive and are often happy to get a better understanding. It’s always important to be open to changing how we view something so that everyone is able to feel accepted and understood; therefore if there is any information or something I’ve said that is offensive, incorrect or even if you have a different perspective than me, please let me know as I only want to be respectful of others and am always willing to see other people reasons for their views.
Thank you for taking the time to read this!

It’s been said before but I’ll say it again:
autism is a disability
and while we are disabled by society, we are not only disabled by society. It’s a fairly common sentiment among low support needs autistics that “if society was accommodating, we wouldn’t be disabled.”
I think part of this can just be a step in the learning process. Maybe you just got diagnosed and are still figuring things out and unlearning internalized ableism.
But nah, I’m overstimulated in spring by the black flies and contrasting warm sun and cool wind. I’m overstimulated in summer by the suffocating heat and the feeling of sweating. Fall is the same as spring, as well as what I can do each day being super unpredictable because of the changing weather. Winter is evil and I have to stay inside for almost the whole season.
I’m overwhelmed by the sound of people chewing, a door opening unexpectedly, my own breathing sounds, my clothes smelling slightly different, the difference in water texture at other peoples houses.
Our brains are wired differently. We are inherently disabled (in my experience). And that’s not a bad thing.
Yes some are more disabled than others, but your autism wouldn’t just disappear if you have accommodations. It can get a lot more manageable, yes! But not disappear. And if it does, you probably weren’t autistic in the first place.
Also, the very fact of needing accommodations kind of negates the whole “not disabled” argument lol. Like, “if everything was different, I wouldn’t be disabled!” Sure, if everything was different, maybe we could fly too, but that’s not our reality 😅

I am angry all the time. Every time something happens to make me feel out of control, I respond with anger. Lately, it has been my sister. Whenever she does something that makes me feel out of control, I shout at her and I can't control it. Then when I get angry at her, she responds by hitting at me (shes 10) , and by that point, I feel so ripped away from my authority all I can do is hit back. In that moment, I can't stop it. When I feel out of control, I feel this burning in the pit of my stomach. It feels so excruciating. When i shout, it goes away. When i shout, i feel in control again. I used to run away from it, burying it down. I used to pride myself in that I'm never angry. But now that's who I am. That's what I do. It's like my brain is no longer thinking rational, it needs to be in control, and if it's not something needs to be done. I feel like such a horrible, selfish person.
I'm not a violent dog, I don't know why I bite.

No matter how many people I talk to,
Masking or not,
Online or IRL,
People always find me annoying,
And it hurts,
This is why I stay quiet most of my life

shoutout to autistic people that have imposter syndrome. Shoutout to autistic people who have neurotypical traits. Shoutout to autistic people who feel isolated in our own community. Shoutout to self-diagnosed autistics. Shout out to autism.

Something I think about a lot whenever people say that their children's autism just showed up out of nowhere, is that lots of autistic traits are considered normal for a while.
Picky eating, meltdowns, not picking up on social cues, and taking things literally are all typical child behaviors- up to a point. Autism is literally a developmental disorder, yet people expect it to be obvious from the get go.
Their symptoms didn't come out of nowhere, though. They were always there, they were just normal kid stuff for a while.

It seems to me that people forget autism is a spectrum.
Some people are so accepting of autism and the things it includes, but the moment someone else's autism is different than theirs, it's suddenly fake or bad representation or something.
It irks me to no end. Remember that the definition of spectrum in this case is "a wide range".
Autism is not the same for everybody.

Me: “Nah I’ll pass, i don’t like the texture”
Others:
“but you never had an issue before?”
“Your just making that up to be different”
“ugh stop making autism your entire personality”
No I’m not making it up to be different or trying to make my autism my personality, and it has been an issue before!
Only now I’m not afraid to speak up about it and allowing myself to understand that I dislike something and why I might dislike it!

Forgotten Victims of the Holocaust 🪽: Functioning Labels Origin. Memory eternal. 🕊️ 🕯️
CW ~ N@zi Germany, e@genics, ableism
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you recognize these people? Perhaps they could be your neighbor, your friend, your coworker, your cousin. Maybe they liked gardening, music, bike rides, getting ice cream in the summer. Had they gotten the chance to live, most of these people would be enjoying their golden years around a fireplace telling stories of the lives that they lived. Unfortunately, most of these people pictured probably did not survive.
In Nazi Germany, you always picture Jewish people. But Nazis also hated disabled and autistic people (some consider it a disability for themselves some do not). The guy who doesn't even deserve behind the Asperger's diagnosis sided with the regime. Now I'm not bashing on anyone that has Asperger's. I'm focusing on the functioning labels.
He ran a clinic. Anyone he considered high functioning who could mask was spared or just painfully hiding autistic traits. Anyone that was considered low functioning was killed because they were deemed unworthy of life. He sent at least 780 kids to the camps. Even today, doctors use low functioning to deny folks with higher support needs accommodations, autonomy and dignity because they don't see them as people.
This is why I don't use functioning labels. I see myself in them. They were literally erased from the pages of history and deserve to be remembered. It wasn't that long ago. Survivors from then are still alive. Very old, but still here. 🌌
