ok in all seriousness. And ill try to keep this as short as i can. theeee lz experience is hearing them play live, rather than the studio recordings. This may sound weird to hear from a guy born 20 years after lz stopped doing shows lol but theres a LOT of material out there that u can watch/listen to if u wanna get (what i assume is a fraction of) the experience. Probably the easiest thing to find and in best quality (though in my exp the quality of online streams is still atrocious, maybe theres some hq torrents though?) is “the song remains the same”, a concert film of three dates they played at MSG in 1973. but theres also videos floating around of their concerts at Royal Albert Hall 1970 and Earls court 1975 (you can check yt for these) plus a few odds and ends here and there (im a big fan of this tv appearance in france 1969, though this was super early on so their performance “style” isnt yet well defined, esp wrt plant, but the actual playing is still peak imo)

as far of audio-only live recordings go, theres of course the album version of TSRTS, the BBC sessions album (of various radio appearances they did through the years), and the album called “how the west was won” with live versions of many of their more popular songs taken from a couple dates in california in i believe 1972. These are all on spotify or yt or wherever else u listento music. Theyre also really well mastered (and remastered, and re remastered…) bc Jimmy Page is anal like that. So even if theyre live theyre great quality and u can hear every instrument distinctly.

ALSO theres like a million lz bootlegs out there, which is like its own niche subfandom(?). A bootleg is an illegal recording that fans made back in the 70s and then spread around and/or sold for money. the digital versions of many of these are available on yt and archive.org but theres also a huge marked of selling them, the og 70s vinyls are especially prized. idk much about lz bootlegs bc i never could listen to a single one all the way through as all the noise bothers my brain lol so if anyone reading this does and has tips please share<3

I spoke about live stuff bc in my opinion, and also according to members of lz, fans, various music critic type people, basically everyone agrees lol lz studio songs were just kind of the first iteration of what would then mutate and stretch into a more loose, longer, live experience. Imo lz, studio or live, is some of the best music ever made point blank period, but its definitely not for everyone, in that you have to be able to get in that classic rock/prog rock* type of mood of songs lasting anywhere from 6 minutes studio to 35 minutes live, and taking you on this weird journey with ebbs and flows, rather than having a tight structure that is easier to follow and listen to like all pop music ever. i mean this in an entirely value neutral way: a pop song, whether from 1965 or 2015, is easy to listen to bc IT carries YOU through the listening experience, whether you want to or not, whereas for instance a 20 min version of dazed and confused live requires you to willingly be there. Its not work or effort, exactly (at least not to me) but it definitely requires a different type of attention.

ANYWAY, of course theres also the actual studio albums. i dont think theres any specific way you should listen To them, like my friend has been going thru them chronologically but back in the day when i was just getting into lz i just jumped from one song or album to another as the mood struck me (which is how hoth ended up being the first lz album i ever heard… i think itd finished torrenting first and i liked the cover and took it on my ipod on holiday with me, and now its my favorite album of all time & engraved on my very soul lol). Actually speaking of, do u have any writing tips?? I might start writing fanfics when I'm bored idk

Sure, I can give some writing tips! Just keep in mind that these are tips that work for me. What works for one person might not work for another. 

My first general tip is one I hated hearing when I was younger: read a lot! Read the sort of stuff you want to write, but also other stuff as well. There’s literally nothing that will help you write more than reading. The tip I was always given as a teenager was “to be a good writer, you must first be a good reader”. I thought this was bullshit lol. I only read comics and manga. I rarely ever read actual books. But an online friend gave me the same advice, and encouraged me to read more. I did, and actually enjoyed it, and it’s made a huge difference in my writing. Now I consider myself an avid reader.  

Secondly, decide on a writing method that works best for you. For me personally, that’s writing in the Notes app on my phone. When I used to write on my laptop, I struggled to find time to actually sit down and write. But once I switched to doing it on my phone, my output increased dramatically. Maybe the opposite is true for you, but it’s important to try different methods and find what works for you. I know people who hand write their stories and type them up later. So any method is valid. 

Now these are a bit more personalized to me but they might be helpful to others:

If you’re writing anything longer than a short one shot, have a plan in mind for where the story is going. It doesn’t have to be a detailed outline, you don’t even have to write it down. But have a general idea of the main story beats before you begin, so you know what you’re working toward. Even if it’s just a smutty one shot, it’s a good idea to know the main things you want to include and the general vibe of the story and what the ending will be like. You can of course change this as you go if you need to. 

For smut in particular, I like to focus on the emotions of the characters, not just the physical sensations. For me, this just makes the smut more interesting and stimulating. 

For dialogue, don’t get too hung up on sounding like a “real conversation”. People who tell you to listen to real conversations to help with dialogue are crazy. Real conversations are a mess! People start and stop sentences out of nowhere, say the wrong words and correct themselves, lose their train of thought, etc. They would not be fun at all to read! Instead, you want to give the illusion of a real conversation. You write it out in a way that sounds interesting and serves the plot and is fun to read, but make it seem natural. Don’t forget to use contractions! I see a lot of beginning writers forgetting to use contractions in their dialogue. Unless it’s a character who speaks very formally, use them! 

Now this is probably the most important one, especially for writing fanfiction (but it applies to all writing): make some writing friends! Make friends with other writers here on tumblr who are writing in your fandom. Having a buddy to bounce ideas off of and just talk about your stories with is so so helpful. It keeps you motivated and excited to write, and you can inspire each other. And luckily it’s super easy to make friends with fanfic writers on here. The vast majority of them are very sweet and happy to talk to you. Literally just message them saying you enjoy their work and would like to be friends. Anyone who has a negative reaction to that isn’t worth having as a friend anyway.

Updates 12/1/2024: oh wow its december

1. I got Clozemaster lifetime. It was expensive. I think too expensive. But it was half as expensive on black friday compared to the rest of the year. I HATE paying monthly subscriptions so it was Lifetime 1 time payment, or nothing. Thoughts? They have a new Fluency Fast Track with 10 collections of 1000 sentences each.

The positives of the new Fluency Fast Track: they said they used real japanese translators instead of MTL (however I am still seeing some weird situations in sentences, but less than before), they are using the same 10,000 base english sentences to translate for each language (I see this as a positive and a negative - good because it means they can do more different language translation pairs like spanish-arabic or french-japanese - negative because using english for base sentences means some Key Grammar or Sayings in certain languages could get totally missed in all 10k words... this is an issue Glossika has cause it also uses one set of english sentences it then translates to all other languages), the split into 10 collections of 1000 words each is GREAT for motivation (you see 10-20% of a bar completed a day if you study 100-200 sentences and for someone like me it can really motivate me to push to do 500-1000 sentences a day and see bars completed).

They still have the Legacy Fluency Fast Track, and a benefit I think it still has is that because the sentences are from Tatoeba, they're more like real language you run into online and in media to be honest. された and rera type verb forms show up so much more in real life than in most beginner study materials. In Glossika, they show up earlier which i think is a good thing as theyre quite common to actually hear or read. In the clozemaster Tatoeba sourced sentences they also show up often. But in the new Fluency Fast Track I have seen very Beginner Textbook type sentences so far, so its artificially easier than real life sentences... meaning you're less prepared for real life sentences - at least earlier on.

2. I'm still doing Glossika Japanese, wondering if I stop paying if I could keep the sentences I've studied to review for free... I'm in B1 module, 5462 sentences studied, 113 hours studied.

The thing with Glossika is... I DO think it helps a lot with everyday go shopping/small talk language. Maybe a tourist would get a lot of benefit from it? I also think it prepares well for listening skills (especially if like me you don't read the sentences much). I play Yakuza Like a Dragon and understand in listening almost everything in the side stories Ichiban walks into. And maybe its helping my comprehension of video games or anime... fuck it I should go test that by watching a lets play I'll be right back...

Alright, based on a Final Fantasy VIII lets play I just saw for 10 minutes... glossikas helping me understand the lets players comments (oh in a school, he doesnt say much, this guy doesnt know what happened) but the game script is about as understandable/confusing as it was a year ago.

Anyway. I will give a full review on Glossika once I finish the japanese course. And future me: you either use Chinese Spoonfed Anki audio deck (free) or Clozemaster (which I never have to pay again) if u want to intensively study Chinese more. Glossika is too much per month I shouldnt keep paying for it.

3. It is so FRUSTRATING being at this wonky intermediate level lol! (I'd guess my Chinese is just plain intermediate and Japanese is upper beginner/lower intermediate somewhere... probably upper beginner because that's when you can start reading and watching shows and playing video games but your brain feels fried after a few minutes to an hour because its so draining to focus and figure out whats going on).

I know I need to study a few hundred more hours to see progress in either language... and that takes so long lol!

And I have neglected chinese reading, so some hanzi are vaguer in my head (I can still mostly read around the same level though just I cant read ALOUD because I forgot pronunciations). And I have a friend from china and she likes checking out my books so if i ask what a hanzi is she will tell the pronunciation and then this full dictionary type explanation of all the things a hanzi means... and it'll remind me how BASIC Summary gist my understanding of MANY hanzi i can read are. How much more I need to know about each individual hanzi I already recognize, but dont know nearly as thoroughly. Its not a huge surprise... because I often learn to read as fast as possible and neglect deeper-meaning stuff and nuanced small details until later once Reading Itself is solid. (Thats why in french I can read anything but my produced grammar is Shit its Bad and my listening skill is like A2). But yeah... I not only need to listen more, read more, I need to in-depth study each word I already know more... at some point.

Goal for chinese is still just to listen more. But I only did like 10 hours of audiobook that month... that is too little time spent studying, when I need to study like 200-600 hours to see noticeable progress. I'm not changing the study plan though... listening focus is still critical.

My japanese is less good, which means I see progress Faster at least, but im still looking at like 200 hours to see noticeable progress and like 1000 hours to see it get to aby point closer to my Chinese comprehension level.

I'm toying with the idea of doing Clozemaster when done wirh Glossika for Japanese, as it has 10,000 words to learn so at least 4000-6000 of them should be new words once I'm done with Glossika. And it'll give me some reading practice. Yes Satori Reader is better... so maybe I'll do that, if my vocabulary feels big enough (like around 5000+ words) after Glossika.

4. I'm impulsive I'm a book collector I LOVE old language learning textbooks so... uh. I bought "All Spanish Method first and second book by Guillermo Franklin Hall Aviles." It was first published before 1923, its got a lot of interesting quirks of its time like teaching to the Spanish Academy standards and in a Spain accent (but explaining a Mexico accent once and the one I'll try to focus on). It's a direct method and Nature Method book with pictures and ALL IN SPANISH. And you know me... I love learning a language IN a language. So I may just learn to Read Spanish just like how I learned to Read French... and yes I still think the dreaming spanish youtube videos are cool... and I still have no free time.

I'm supposed to learn to code and repair technology this year in my free time...

I still do not know how to NOT overwork it seems

Ok so I'm sat on a train reading a book & listening to music (note: it has to be a book matty likes or has mentioned before, so he can be all pretentious about it lol, so maybe like a Kerouac or Didion or Burroughs - you get the gist) and it also has to be in a foreign country, well Austria specifically cause that is where I am from and it is foreign enough for him I think? (We will get to why that is important later) Cause who the fuck goes to Austria (even tho it is a super amazing & pretty country but that's not the point). Anyways, he asks to sit next to me because I'm sat in some sort of hidden corner of the train and he wants his peace and quiet in case somebody recognizes him and I let him, but we just don't talk, don't look at each other. But thennnn he asks about my book, if i like it, what i think about it whatever and we start talking and at some point i'm like: you look so familiar, but we cannot possibly know each other (playing it cool lol - also i don’t think he would get recognized that much in Austria, this is the important part as to why the story works out) and then he says that he is in a band. I ask about it and also want to know why the fuck he is in Austria and he tells me he is here alone on some kind of journey of self discovery and he heard that it's a nice & quaint country. So then we both get off at the same stop in my city cause that is where he is staying. His hotel is also conveniently very close to where I live and he asks me to keep him being in the city a secret, I tell him that i will obvs do that and ask what he's gonna do here to which he responds that he doesn’t really know yet. So OF COURSE I show him the city and all the hidden places in it and then in the end we have sex lol and it is the best and dirtiest sex of my life and then i never see him again.

something thats interesting to me is that i've spent more time on czech this past year than ukrainian the year previous... and just on duolingo, somehow?! There's no way I'm 2 months away from finishing the czech tree!!!

I suppose the courses could have been different lengths to start out with, but I do blame the redesign they did... I still don't like it, lol. (Other factors could be: czech has No Cyrillic so i cant read it as well)

As far as the other languages go — I really can't believe it was only this year I finished 50languages?! Year so long... but anyways, after that i will be honest with you: most of my active belarusian studying has been solely anki and (mostly) daily search of the wordle. The other most is People I Follow On Tumblr and tiktok (theres belarusians on there)

Russian is about the same as I've been doing. Slogging through 5,000 words of top 10,000 on memrise still. Probably about 2,500 of the way through. Probably at LEAST 2 more years of slog...

Maybe it doesn't serve much of a purpose, but i'd feel weird having the extra time. Like, no, i'm supposed to be Doing Something at 14:45,,, and, yknow, sometimes i encounter these words in the wild. (Not so much anymore though)

Doing my best to keep up with polygloss for russian, too! It's fun but I never know how to describe the images so a lot of matches get sent into the ether... oops 😅

As for marathi, well................................. nanowrimo happened. Is putting it shortly - actually, I started doing something else in november, and with that, languages, and nano... it was a lot! So I did not do much marathi in november specifically because of that. The rest of the year, well... hmmm. The less said the better?

Well, anyways, it's because of having to spend the same amount of energy almost on czech at the same time, *and* because of the Something Else i've been doing. So - I do want to learn it! Spending time on marathi would be great, actually! I am just Busy. And thus it has been relegated to anki only for the better part of the year if i remember right 😔 someday...

Sidenote, at the rate I'm typing this will be posted after midnight..... well, i wanted to put it out there yesterday night, but i couldn't decide what to say, lol. January 2nd is still New of new years, right??

To be honest, I haven't really thought about any language plans for this year... i know russian and belarusian well enough to read posts & such, and I have the mental fortitude to read books i understand maybe 25% of, but listening and talking I'd say are probably where I need the most improvement. (Writing, well... I'll get back to you once i can learn grammar effectively). With everything as it is now, I'm not sure there's much to be done about that, but maybe I'll figure something out here sooner or later... maybe.

I know I want to finish the czech tree on duolingo, and then I'll pick another language from my duo list and the cycle shall begin anew... and then in 12 years either duo will be dead or i will not wish to learn languages any more (a scary thought). OR i will speedrun every language on my list to the best of my ability and then never touch duo again (no streak, no badges... i think monthly badges are like the Only duo thing that actually works on me because i Need To Collect. ah, fomo...)

As for marathi, if I can manage to pull it out of hibernation alongside all that duolingo nonsense, then by god i'll do it 🫡 if i learned* one language by being exceedingly slow at it I can do it again!!

*referring to russian so perhaps its not accurate to say "learned" still but my point stands

It’s a long story of circle of abuse, I used to save her from my father hitting her and few years later I had to save myself from both of them hitting me

I truly believe she’s evil, not what she does to me but to others also, she beats and humiliates not only me but the maids too, the other siblings are not beaten, the brother sometimes rarely but he’s her worshipper so i don’t think he minds.

that is fucking awful and yes, i dont even believe in the whole concept of evil (i was raised without religion in a completely secular country + im very into psychology so good vs evil is not part of my worldview lol) but some behaviors even i just have to describe as evil and ur mom fits that pretty well like abusing ur own children is fucking evil. i have empathy for her to some extent since her behavior is clearly the result of her being abused herself like u said but it gets clouded by the absolute disgust and hatred and rage i feel for her for letting herself become the abuser herself and keeping the circle of abuse going by passing it on to her children. its one thing to not have the strength or power to stop ur husband from abusing ur kids, but straight up joining in on the abuse is a whole other level of disgusting and im so sorry u have to experience this.

I LOVE Greek Myth stuff. I've read Elektra, Galatea (short story by Madeline Miller, didn't love it tbh, but anyway), Ariadne (Theseus is a D-BAG idk why I was surprised but still), I also have A Thousand Ships on my shelf as well as Pandora's Jar (which is actually looking more like a book describing all the greek myths in terms of why men suck and women get blamed for it anyway). I liked Circe more I think--been a while since I read it so I don't remember why, but I did. SO good.

PLEASE tell me what you think of Love & Other Words. I just got it back from my sister, I was rereading parts of it--it is my favorite of theirs so far 💕

Listened to japanese for 6+ hours - 2 hours Final Fantasy X let's play, .5 hour listening to TTS audiobook while reading along, .5 hour watching Dracula musical, 3 hours listening to glossika japanese (on audio 10)

Dracula Musical: i watched this maybe 2 years ago and I remember it motivated me to want to get back into learning Japanese. Because I could follow the main idea (which to be fair, its based on Dracula so of course I could guess mainly what was going on based on the Dracula scene it looked like). Well I watched some of it again tonight: MUCH better grasp of specifics now lol. I'm relying on Kanji words heavily (because I can guess them faster), but the overall effect is still wooh I can follow some lines completely and other lines the main idea at least. Which is a lot more than the last time I watched this! I found it on bilibili with Chinese and Japanese subs if any of you want to watch. Notable features: its a rock musical, Dracula is played by a woman, the 3 brides of Dracula are played by men, Dracula is in love with Mina (like the Coppula Dracula movie). It also has my favorite Dracula ending of the various versions I've seen of the story.

Guardian TTS with kindle ebook: so if anyone else wants to go on this journey, amazon.co.jp has a lot of ebooks for fairly cheap prices (I think I literally got like 10 of the guardian ebook installments that come in chapters of 4, for free, today, just from points). I think you have to register with a Japanese address, and make sure you either use a different email than your amazon.com/other account OR you use a different password, so that when you log into kindle app you can log into your Japanese account (because if email used AND password are the same, you can only log into your first account you made - I ran into this issue until I just changed my password). To use TTS in Kindle app (on android), go to settings, accessibility settings, Talkback. Enable it. Pick where you want Talkback icon to be, I personally like putting it on my navigation bar so I don't accidentally tap it when browsing. Click Talkback settings, languages and install all the languages you need talkback to be able to do text to speech for. Pick the voice version of each language you most like the sound of. For language detection I suggest you pick Aggressive so it automatically reads the correct language when it runs into text in a new language (such as a web page with english then Japanese text). If you pick conservative, the audio may stay "English voice" even once other language text is encountered. If Talkback stops being able to read multiple languages (or any other app on your phone suddenly no longer can), then you'll want to to BACK into Talkback, back into Google language services settings, and re download the languages you need. For some reason Samsung likes to delete language data every so often if you aren't using it frequently. When Samsung deletes it, suddenly apps that use TTS on the phone have NO audio for non English languages (or non-whatever language your default is on the phone) and the phone will either NOT play audio for other languages at all, or attempts to play the audio with the default language voice (on my phone the English Voice) and it sounds absolutely awful and makes gratuitous mistakes.

Anyway. Once you have the japanese ebooks to your hearts content on kindle app, feel free to read. If you want TTS while reading, then open the ebook in Kindle and flip to the page you want to start on. Click Talkback icon. Then double click the ebook page. Once you've selected the page, Talkback should give directions on turning on Text To Speech (click twice, click twice to confirm). Then you should get a TTS voice from Talkbacks voice option you downloaded.

Actual progress while reading? Well I got through the prologue and chapter 1. For the prologue I just tried to follow the speed of audio (which was brain fryingly fast for me). For the first chapter, I read through it first and looked up unknown words. I confirmed my guess, which is that a lot of the Kanji words (in combination with me being familiar with these chapters plots already) means I'm guessing these words correctly for the most part. The major new words I need to learn: hiragana words! And the "helper" words that use Kanji (and tend to be 4 characters, Kanji hiragana Kanji hiragana). Words like just, suddenly, at the same time, drew back/fell back, and (4 variants for and used!). I also noticed a few grammar patterns that i guess I never studied a grammar guide High enough to either study or understand. 1. Adjectives (or maybe it's adverbs the way they were used?) Were used actually quite similar to the -ly in English or -de in chinese. Id see a descriptive word then a regular grammar pattern and it'd be describing the thing after it. After a few pages it got a lot more obvious when I was looking at a descriptive (which makes life easier). 2. I have had a rough idea of japanese sentence grammar for YEARS at this point. But actually reading I think made it clearer how to rely on the particles, and how much SHITA, DATTA, DEKITA, and SHI after verbs in the middle of sentences, crop up! I mean yeah they're all basic beginner class words. But just like English, do, was, did, doing are real fucking useful. Idk it wasn't like learning something new so much as reading enough I am able to notice This common pattern, which helps make it easier to single out and isolate hiragana only words that ARENT these and combination words that are HELPER words (like in the end, concluded, and then, just, suddenly) that I still need to learn. So basically, brute force making myself read IS Helping with improving my ability to parse words (which again is critical for figuring out hiragana words from conjugation and helper words from descriptives). 3. Word order was not actually as big a deal as... I guess ever? Maybe I've just listened to enough japanese I'm used to it. There was only two sentence where order confused me and it was a long ass descriptive sentence of Da Qing looking like a flattened fat persimmon and denting the car hood and saying it smells like a bomb dropped how did yunlan not notice, and the long ass description of Zhao yunlans messy room including all the items and how even a pig would be offended by being compared to its level of mess. Because I've read the novel I knew those parts so it wasn't too confusing, but they were very long sentences and I think I'd have been lost if it was a brand new novel to me.
