Something I've been thinking about is how Patrick O'Brian manages so skillfully to write characters whose actions contradict their beliefs, which I think is honestly a big part of why his characters feel so real. Mostly with Stephen and Jack—e.g., and perhaps most notably, Stephen has notably leftist sympathies (honestly I have no idea how to characterize his politics in period terms) who nonetheless becomes very comfortable with his rise to the landed gentry, while Jack is a card-carrying Tory who much of the time sympathizes far more with working class sailors and farmers than with the upper classes—but I'm sure he does it to a lesser degree with some of his minor characters (James Dillon, while perhaps not precisely minor, comes to mind), and I love that he's able to do that, especially the way in which he embeds it in the narrative. We see how they're all unreliable narrators of themselves; we understand how they want to be seen and how that does and doesn't coincide with the reality, but most importantly, this isn't presented as something reprehensible, just as a part of their own humanity. They are not their expectations for themselves, but they don't need to be those expectations to be beloved.

At least James fucked with people his own age. He wasn't a 30 year old man bullying 11 year old children. He wasn't a teacher with power over the students he tormented. He had zero power to expel or academically punish anyone. At least the people James messed with had the chance to fuck with him back. I really don’t think we talk enough about how much Sir John by virtue of being the symbol of (british) empire, intrudes and encroaches on everybody so much. Literally takes me aback every single time I watch the Terror.

He always treats Francis as a subordinate, even on his own ship. He takes the head of the table (when it should be Francis’), he leads every interaction with Francis with superiority- always subordinates him even when he’s trying (so SO fucking poorly) to apologize for them getting iced in. He dictates the menu. He poaches even from JFJ for his journal. He just takes and takes and takes- and is it any wonder Francis resented him so much considering how much of it is absolutely related to the fact that he’s Irish? To the very thing that likely has put him in a subordinate position with most of the navy for most of his life? Something that shouldn’t continue considering his accomplishments and tenure as a captain? It’s absolutely vile.

Selkies are not born with their pelt, they are given one very early in their life and they inprint on it. In exchange, the pelt takes on its owner and changes to fit them.

Half-selkies do not work on one specific rule. Some can inprint on a pelt and shapeshift, some can only inprint on a pelt but not shapeshift, and some cannot do both. You basically just have to give the baby a pelt and see if it works

James has never been given a pelt, not even as a baby. This was an attempt at making him pass as a 100% human, and he grows up trying to be as human as possible after that. Even if someone clocks him as a half-selkie, he'll pretend he isn't bothered by the fact he never got to learn what he can actually do and who he actually is. But he is, he yearns to know more. (Add to this that selkies' rule on gender is more accepting than humans'. He wishes he could just be like them and be who he really is)

However, I don't think he passes as completly human either. Even in human form, selkies are different to humans in some points and James has some. I'm still unsure what these differences are but they are both physical and in behavior.

So you could add another layer to this : James doesn't even know what animal he could be, and tries to piece it together by analysing his own self without the mask he hides behind.
