There has been an insane proliferation of AI written scripts turned into youtube videos for WWII content that are at best, lacking context or generally just hazily okay I guess you're not wrong into outright UH NO THIS IS NOT RIGHT
pro tips if you're someone who likes watching videos on youtube to learn more: 1. THEY SHOULD ALWAYS LIST THEIR SOURCES. ALWAYS. (and you should always check their sources. "A diary of a (nationality) (soldier)" and you can find absolutely no record of that person ever existing? 🚩 2. If it is read by an AI voice (you will be able to tell at a point - they don't follow normal phrasing through sentences and sometimes they will pronounce things - especially cities and people's names - strangely) that is another 🚩
I've blocked like 4 channels in the last 24 hours alone that I am like 99% sure are all AI and it's really frustrating.
There are so many good channels who do such a good job with research and script writing and fact checking, seeing channels using AI to "research" and "write" is deeply disturbing - especially when they're missing the mark with accuracy.
To try to turn this around into something positive, here are some youtube channels that I've found very informative and have really enjoyed over the years: The Operations Room (this is a great one if you are a visual learner and want to see placement on maps & live-time movement) (They have a sister channel, The Intel Report, which I also enjoy.) The Armchair Historian (this is a great channel for comprehensive overviews of events or situations, and generally does a good job being balanced in how they narrate) (Extra History is not affiliated with The Armchair Historian but it does videos in a similar way: animated, although more short-form but they will do multiple videos in a series to go more in-depth on topics.) American Veterans Center (this channel takes the middleman out - it's interviews with veterans, in their own words)
Honorable mentions: Tasting History (I love the way he contextualizes culture and history into food) and Oceanliner Designs (because we were all Titanic nerds for at least a week this year.... but, he does more than just the Titanic!)
Anyway when in doubt: Check their sources. If they don't list their sources: ask. If they don't provide sources when asked: don't believe them unless you can independently verify. In general, look for another corroborating source even if a video seems well researched/legitimate, if it's introducing a claim that's new to you/you're not sure about.
(Do you have informative/documentary channels you like? What are they? I'm a dilettante with historical topics so even if it's a themed channel about something other than WWII, give it a share! I'd be curious to see. A day in which I haven't learned anything new is a day I've wasted.)

Finding out that ALL of my works, including those that are on-going and some that were deleted, have been uploaded to some random "Archive" without my information or consent is definitely not how I wanted my day to go

The first time disciple Shen Yuan/Shen Qingqiu meets Liu Qingge, it is during a Bai Zhan peak raid. And what ends up happening is that Shen Qingqiu gets kicked in the jaw with such force he feels his teeth clack together unpleasantly. And frustrated with his situation, the system, and quite frankly a ton of other little things that have been building up over the course of the last few weeks, he feels something snap in the back of his mind like that of a rubber band after being stretched too far.
What ends up happening is that Shen Qingqiu turns and locks onto the very first figure he can see that is dressed in grey-and-white like a homing missile, and then with the force of a twin-tailed mountain tiger, lunges towards said figure with an equally menacing snarl.
He ends up taking the Bai Zhan peak disciple by utter surprise, and they both collide into the ground in a tangle of angry yelling and limbs. What ends up happening is that Liu Qingge gets the subsequent wind knocked out of him and pinned into the dirt by a Qing Jing peak disciple who is filled with the might and fury of a scholar having their peaceful afternoon interrupted and a once-grown-man re-experiencing puberty.
It is with that might and fury that Liu Qingge meets the wild, frenzied eyes of Shen Qingqiu, with his lips pulled back into a truly ferocious scowl. Shen Qingqiu hisses out, with such force it makes his voice rasp, as if he might as well sink his teeth into Liu Qingge's throat and rip it out; "Get the fuck off my mountain."
Liu Qingge is so shocked by -- well, quite a many things, but most importantly the fact that he has been pinned, and the way the sun is bouncing off this boy's face, -- that his brain needs five seconds to reboot. It's five seconds too long, because by the time he registers what just happened, Shen Yuan has clambered off him and disappeared. Gone and thrown himself into the closest dust cloud scuffling in order to unleash the rest of his fury on the other Bai Zhan Peak kids.
Qing Jing Peak experiences an unfortunate uptick in Bai Zhan disciple visits -- specifically of the Liu Qingge variety. Specifically Liu Qingge, actually. Who very much wants to find the boy that managed to get one over on him and demand a rematch. (Or maybe kiss him.)

So with AO3 recommending locking your fics to help prevent scraping for AI use, I know a few people (myself included) who have locked down their fics. But it’s made me curious how many people are locking so…
Also reblog this and tell me in the tags why you do or don’t plan to lock your works.
For those of you that want to lock your works but don’t want to do each fic individually, here is a tutorial for how to lock all your fics at once.

Mulder stirs when Scully slips into bed beside him – a pleasant surprise, though not a wholly unexpected one. They’ve been slipping into each others’ beds for a little while now.

Sobbing, screaming and throwing up cause half of the fic's you recommended haven't updated for a very long time or are discontinued 😭 I'm so scared to start any of them cause I can't handle a cliff hanger 😞
- (^_^) anon
aww that is understandable. you can filter by complete works in ao3, you just have to go down to 'completion status' in filters. however... i implore you to think about it this way:
there are entire stories you are missing out on when you avoid reading something that isn't complete! those incomplete and discontinued fics deserve just as much of a chance as the complete ones. they are just as important and they are always worth it in the end. even if the author may not finish it, i think having read something is better than having not read it at all, you know? because there could be one of the best plot points or scenes or interactions in that fic that you'll never get to read elsewhere.
being scared of cliffhangers is valid! i've found that they tend to dull with time, which makes them more manageable. in the end, a fic you read with a cliffhanger will get pushed to the back of your mind with the everydays of life. and it's always nice to speculate with the author via comments/asks! that kind of fandom interaction is integral to keeping art alive. and even if there is a cliffhanger in a fic, i think everything that comes before it is always worth the read.
and also--just because a fic has not been updated in a long time, does not mean it's discontinued or never will have another update again! it doesn't matter if it's been months or years. i've seen authors update after ages, myself included! you just never know. a comment also goes a long way. sometimes authors just need a push of inspo or motivation! i've read so many stories about readers leaving comments on fics that haven't been updated, the author seeing said comments, and then updating bc it gave them a push of motivation!
so don't be scared to read those incomplete/discontinued fics. they matter just as much!

Ao3 and AI
They made a short blog post here and I dearly hope you read it, but the most important thing is:
1. Most AIs are trained off one dataset, the Common Crawl dataset.
2. Common Crawl can be be blocked in two lines of code.
3. Ao3 implemented that code in December 2022.
4. Fics that were already scraped will remain scraped and there's nothing we can do about it, but any fics posted after they put in that code will not be used to train AI unless the AI-makers make a new data-scraper.
5. Ao3 has also put code in place to slow down scrapers and they check their traffic for signs of abuse.
In short, you do not need to set your fic to members-only to stop it from being part of the Common Crawl dataset, though it will add another layer of protection for other scrapers if you feel really strongly about it. Please note that the blog post says locking your fic "will not block every potential scraper."

Johnny finds Neil high out on the balcony and confronts him about his apparent uptake in kalif use, causing Neil to spiral further. Weighed down by visions and signs, he shuts down, leaving Johnny to care for him in a moment of vulnerability.
After three months, I'm finally finished. Apparently, I just needed to be trapped inside for three days straight with nothing else to do.
Anyway, if you click through, mind the tags.

ok i've done some light research. if you want a software engineer/fic writer's inital take on lore.fm, i'll keep it short and sweet.
my general understanding of lore.fm functionality:
they use OpenAI's public API. they take in the text from the URL provided and use it to spit out your AI-read fic. their API uses HTTP requests, meaning a connection is made to an OpenAI server over HTTP to do as lore.fm asks and then give back the audio. my concern is that i wasn't able to find out what exactly that means. does OpenAI just parse the data and spit out a response? is that data then stored somewhere to better their model (probably yes)? does OpenAI do anything to ensure that the data is being used the way it was intended (we know this probably isn't true because lore.fm exists)?
lore.fm stores the generated audio (i am almost certain of this because of the features described in this reddit post). meaning that someone's fic is sitting in a lore.fm database. what are they doing with that data? what can they do with it? how is it being stored? what is being stored, the text and the audio, or just the audio?
i find transparency a very difficult thing to ask for in tech. people are concerned with technological trade secrets and stifling innovation (hilarious when i think about lore.fm, because it doesn't take a genius to feed text into AI and display the response somewhere, sorry to say). and while i find the idea of AI being used to help further accessibility on apps that don't yet provide it promising, i find the method that lore.fm (and OpenAI) chooses to do this to be dangerous and pave a path for a harmful integration of AI (and also fanfiction in general -- we write to interact, and lore.fm removes that aspect of it entirely).
we already know that AI companies have been paying to scrape data from different sources for the purposes of bettering their models, and we already know that they've only started asking for permission to do this because users found out (and not from the goodness of their hearts, because more data means better models, and asking for permission adds overhead). but this way of using it allows AI to backdoor-scrape data that the original sources of the data didn't give consent to. maybe the author declined to have their fic scraped by AI on the site they posted it onto (if the site asked at all), but they didn't know a third-party app like lore.fm would feed it into an AI model anyways.
what's the point of writing fics if i have no control over my own content?

To all of my readers who follow me both here and on ao3, I've decided to lock down my works with this whole new AI scrapping crap that's going on. I hate doing this (and it's the first time i'm actually doing it normally i wouldn't) but I'm sick and tired of people scraping ao3 to train their ai so...works are now locked down. If you want to read my stuff but don't have an account, please dm me, I have a few invitations left (or ask other ao3 users, I'm sure they have invitations to spare).
I know this is inconvenient (believe me, it's bullshit) but I'm protecting my work cuz I worked fucking hard on it and I'm not letting it be scraped

Block This AI-Tool Account On Fanfiction Dot Net ASAP
If you are still using FFnet like I am, block this AI Tool Account That Pretends to be a Fic Writer who randomly leaves reviews in a very ominous way that bothers me. I got a barrage of emails informing of sudden reviews and follows. Each review is a copypasta, and I felt like my fics were being branded. SO BLOCK IT IS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Log in, choose the account option, find the block users option like in the screengrab below, then add this FFId: 16123984 into the slot and select save.
Tumblr media
I honestly don't know if this app can data scrape or not, since we don't have an option to lock or private our FFnet accounts, keep blocking anything that you think is suspicious.
Here is the Link to the account. They have one AI-Generated so-called Naruto Fic, which literally has nothing to do with Naruto.
