Chihiro nodded, swallowing thickly, “Alright, well… I’ve been working on something. A project for hope. Of course, you already knew that…”

You didn’t respond, just stood there blankly staring at him, waiting for him to continue.

“It’s an AI, one that can learn and evolve beyond the programming constraints of binary thinking. It’s designed to understand and feel, without falling into the traps that…” he swallowed again, not wanting to bring up the past that had led to you becoming an unwilling member of the Future Foundation, “...well, you know.”

“And you’re telling me this because…?” you sounded wary.

Chihiro’s fingers twitched nervously, “Because, you can help me test it. With your rejection of both hope and despair, we can make sure the AI can run without biases if needed.”

You shrugged, “I’m not allowed to turn down anything you guys ask, but what do you even get out of this?”

Chihiro’s heart hammered in his chest, “I… I admire you,” he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper, “Everything about you.”

You gave him a disgusted look, “I’m not interested in any of you hope-filled tree-huggers. Fuck off with that mushy-gushy shit.”

Chihiro’s heart shattered into a million pieces and tears filled his eyes. He felt a surge of anger, “Why can’t you just like hope? It’s such a good thing, how can you hate it?”

You shrugged again and turned away, “If that’s all, then I’ll take my leave.”

Chihiro suddenly had a thought. One that was awful, terrible, and so tempting.

Virtual social apps from the past

Even if we only discuss the products HE Tuber that provide “virtual scene + Avatar + displacement + real-time social” functions, we can clearly feel the turning point of the market.

Putting aside some attempts at virtual social interaction in the original products, the author selected 10 products that have been dismantled in the past two years, including oasis, BUD, May, Party Island, Slow Planet, WithMe, Highrise, Avakin Life, ZEPETO, and IMVU. products and briefly tracked their development status.

Cyberpunk RED Campaign: How to Save a Life - Setting and Characters

How to Save a Life is my Cyberpunk RED campaign, set in the early 2050s. Using my 2077 weapons homebrew conversion Dark Future Arsenal, it takes place in the Brother's Shadow timeline, and helps to set up the characters of Samurai Jack and Nightowl, as well as Nightowl's daughter, Rebecca.

Setting

Night City

Night City in the 2050s is a period of transition. The reclamation efforts are well underway, and Corpo Plaza has commenced construction, with hundreds of thousands of tonnes of irradiated rubble, soil and debris, left to wallow in state since 2023, being relocated by construction crews. The megabuildings are currently the dominant structures in the sky, as they reach towards the heavens.

The familiar streets of Night City are in flux. Modern neighbourhoods and districts constantly shift locations in the grand scheme of the city.

Foster Medical Resort

Located about 100 km off the coast of Night City, in the beautiful* Pacific Ocean lies a floating resort. Constructed by Arasaka and Foster Medical, The Resort is styled as a tropical paradise, complete with cloned palm trees and lush tropical grasses. At the heart of this manmade island, the Rod of Asclepius, a 110-story highrise hospital and administration building for Foster Medical and Arasaka's R&D division, as well as exclusive VIP landing pads for Arasaka and Foster AVs.

Protected by an AI-driven defence system, The Resort is all but impervious to anything short of a fleet of warships, or an entire air force's worth of planes. The strong defence is necessary, after all, the Resort is home to the world's bleeding edge of medical research and technology. Rich and famous people from across the globe come here to have their various ailments treated. Even ageing itself is treated here.

*May include: sentient AI attack submarines, mutant whales, sea nomad pirates and dangerous levels of pollution.

Characters

Clarissa Gutierrez – The widow of the late Ferdinand Gutierrez, founder of Wolf Media Group, one of the fastest growing alternative media outfits in the world. Since the death of her husband, the company has fallen into disarray, and competitors are now champing at the bit. She feels that if she loses the company, she will lose the last of her husband’s legacy, now that her son has been diagnosed with a rare and terminal medical condition, that will soon take him from her as well. She is desperate, and willing to resort to the worst tricks in the corpo playbook to preserve her control over Wolf Media, and save her son’s life.

Michael Gutierrez – Michael Gutierrez was a healthy teenage boy until he suddenly fell over at school, and was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease that has left him bedridden, and with months to live. He is incapable of doing anything for himself anymore, and needs near constant medical support to survive. His only hope is an experimental regenerative treatment by Foster Medical, a medical firm that caters exclusively to the rich and famous, but it is beyond the family’s means. A desperate mother, not eager to lose her only son, is willing to do anything to acquire this cure and save his life.

Samurai Jack – Jackson Moretz, better known as Samurai Jack, is a Santo Domingo kid born and raised. He was born in Santo, lives and works in Santo, and as he says, he’ll likely die in Santo. Jackson grew up a fan of the rock band Samurai, and idolised Johnny Silverhand, believing that he was a hero who stuck it to the corpos. Moretz collects Samurai merch, and both his personal abode, and office in the upper level of the Santo Domingo edgerunner hub, the Redline, are plastered in Samurai and Johnny Silverhand memorabilia. He got his start as a fixer organising gigs for rockerboys, and gradually diversified his portfolio into mercenary work. “SJ” is not to be trifled with, he plays things cool, but has a capacity for brutal retaliation if he feels wronged, or that he’s being manipulated.

Nightowl – Nightowl is a former corporate exec and fixer who co-owns and runs the Redline, a bar in Santo Domingo, with Samurai Jack. Distinguished by his slight frame, gaunt facial features, and seeming inability to smile. Nightowl has developed a reputation for reliability and discretion.

E1fb0i – Elfboy, stylised as E1fb0i, is Samurai Jack’s netrunner of choice. Kept on retainer by SJ, E1fb0i is enamoured with fantasy, and they are a prolific player of Elflines Online. They acquired biosculpting surgery to change their appearance to that of an elf. Rarely seen out of their customised Bodyweight Suit, and even more rarely seen outside of their netrunning den in the basement of the Redline. E1fb0i is good at what they do, otherwise Samurai Jack would’ve cut them loose a long time ago.

Rebecca (no, not that Rebecca) - Rebecca Owler, known on the NET by her handle legless_egg, is a netrunner who works for Samurai Jack and Nightowl. Injured in some unspecified incident as a teenager, she was interred in a biopod, unable to afford the treatment needed to recover. Rebecca operates out of a netrunner den in the basement of the Redline, occasionally working alongside E1fb0i.

New Escape From Tarkov Map Streets of Tarkov is a Little One-Sided

An updated Escape from Tarkov map The multiplayer first-person shooter survival game has added Streets of Tarkov, allowing players to explore one of its most detailed settings ever. Many players are taking advantage of the chance to check out (or return to) the game that was most widely acknowledged as the inspiration for Call of Duty Warzone 2's DMZ mode thanks to the success of that title. Although some players express concern that a little biassed design favours specific spawning, others love making large cash runs in Streets' urban combat. The empty, devastated streets and highrises found on the Streets of Tarkov map make for a fantastic hotspot to engage in the tense, high-octane loot runs and shoot-outs that make Escape from Tarkov one of the most heart-pounding thrills in PC gaming right now. It has a real feeling of a warzone, with plenty of distinct locations around the ruined city streets to scour for gear and loot. However, it’s not all good news – along with reports of notable performance issues on the map, some players are a little disappointed that for how much verticality and interactivity the map promises, a lot of doors that seem like they should be interactable are actually not, making a lot of the map feel somewhat flatter and more full of dead ends than its initial appearance. Likewise, most attempts to move upstairs stop at the second floor, being blocked by locked doors or furniture and rubble-filled staircases. In addition, players on the Escape from Tarkov Reddit seem to be largely in agreement that the map feels a little too one-sided. Many report finding much better loot drops on the Chakannaya Street side, which houses the grocery store, Concordia, and shopping quarter, along with handy extraction points on the same side. On the other side, the Pinewood Hotel and abandoned factory offer pretty unremarkable rewards, with spawns around the damaged house and theatre offering less accessible extraction points. YouTube ThumbnailIt’s not all entirely one-sided though; some players do report finding good drops in the Pinewood hotel compound, so don’t write them off completely. Developer Battlestate Games has already said that this form is just “the first part of the work on the city and later the location will be expanded,” so hopefully we’ll see it evolve and fulfil the promises that its design suggests. In other news, the latest Escape from Tarkov patch also introduces a nerf to AI-controlled Scavs, giving them a little more weapon spread and hopefully making them feel a little less overwhelming to go up against. So if you’re looking to jump in and explore the Streets of Tarkov, you should have a slightly easier time tackling things. And still, despite the ultralight building method, it looks heavy, substantial, solid, and firm - determined to stay in place and radiate its presence to its environment. Synopsis- Val and half of the team are hired by Trans Global International Finance to test out a new AI security system in an LA skyscraper. However, bad guy Nero and his team have also broken into the building.

Entirety or episode?- Episode

Overall verdict- So, of all of the many, many (well, 66) shows I’ve watched during this project, VIP was the one that proved next to impossible to get hold of. It’s NOWHERE, guys. There are episodes up on Sony Crackle, just not the ones with Mr S in. There’s a DVD, but only of Season 1. There’s the odd episodes on Youtube and Daily Motion, but not the ones I was after in English. I even messaged all the Pamela Anderson fan sources I could find (not a single one got back to me…) So, I ended up having to watch AI Highrise on Youtube, with a really loud Russian voice-over (48 ½ Hours is literally nowhere to be found). This resulted in me probably not having the best grasp of this episode, however, I also get the strong impression that this show is far from rocket science. It’s silly, camp and fun, with Pamela Anderson trotting around on spike heels in a see-through shirt, solving crime (or something). PI Vallerey Irons has a team of really quite adorable-seeming comrades, and the whole thing comes across as weirdly cute and wholesome, despite that it’s evidently mainly trading off, well, cleavage. Even the poison darts that the rogue building AI fires at the team (really) are fluffy. Also, this has one of the most batshit plots I’ve ever encountered – they ultimately defeat the AI (spoiler alert) by Val getting off with a Hot Shirtless Random (he’s shirtless because it was really hot when him and Val were crawling through the air ducts to escape the bad guys… right) so the AI decided it was in love with her too, and when told that it couldn’t be in love with a human because it’s a computer, it got so sad it shut down, thus overriding the self-destruct bomb. Guys, I did not remotely hate this, and I have no regrets having taken the time to watch it, even though I caught about one word in twenty, and I would very much like to watch a version that I could hear properly.

Mark’s character- OK, so from what I can gather from what I could make out despite obscuring voiceover, Nero is a typical Sheppard baddie, who breaks into Trans Global to steal piles of cash and then blow up the building to cover his tracks (as you do). He’s obviously a grade-A turd (he injects Trans Global guys with poisoned truth serum in his first scene to get what I presume were the building/safe codes) but he’s cool, competent and collected. If you’re prepared to watch something with the sound off just to see Mark look all smirky and sleek in a white boiler suit, then this is the Youtube offering for you. Heads up, he also gets to ride a motor bike in this one.

Also, I realise Hot Shirtless Guy is technically a goodie, but there’s just something intensely satisfying about watching him get his arse completely handed to him by Nero (until Val somewhat unsportingly tasers Nero in the head.)

Rewatch?- If I can ever find these two episodes in English, I will be delighted to watch them properly, because this show looks hilarious.
