Cyberpunk RED Campaign: How to Save a Life - Setting and Characters

How to Save a Life is my Cyberpunk RED campaign, set in the early 2050s. Using my 2077 weapons homebrew conversion Dark Future Arsenal, it takes place in the Brother's Shadow timeline, and helps to set up the characters of Samurai Jack and Nightowl, as well as Nightowl's daughter, Rebecca.

Setting

Night City

Night City in the 2050s is a period of transition. The reclamation efforts are well underway, and Corpo Plaza has commenced construction, with hundreds of thousands of tonnes of irradiated rubble, soil and debris, left to wallow in state since 2023, being relocated by construction crews. The megabuildings are currently the dominant structures in the sky, as they reach towards the heavens.

The familiar streets of Night City are in flux. Modern neighbourhoods and districts constantly shift locations in the grand scheme of the city.

Foster Medical Resort

Located about 100 km off the coast of Night City, in the beautiful* Pacific Ocean lies a floating resort. Constructed by Arasaka and Foster Medical, The Resort is styled as a tropical paradise, complete with cloned palm trees and lush tropical grasses. At the heart of this manmade island, the Rod of Asclepius, a 110-story highrise hospital and administration building for Foster Medical and Arasaka's R&D division, as well as exclusive VIP landing pads for Arasaka and Foster AVs.

Protected by an AI-driven defence system, The Resort is all but impervious to anything short of a fleet of warships, or an entire air force's worth of planes. The strong defence is necessary, after all, the Resort is home to the world's bleeding edge of medical research and technology. Rich and famous people from across the globe come here to have their various ailments treated. Even ageing itself is treated here.

Characters

Clarissa Gutierrez – The widow of the late Ferdinand Gutierrez, founder of Wolf Media Group, one of the fastest growing alternative media outfits in the world. Since the death of her husband, the company has fallen into disarray, and competitors are now champing at the bit. She feels that if she loses the company, she will lose the last of her husband’s legacy, now that her son has been diagnosed with a rare and terminal medical condition, that will soon take him from her as well. She is desperate, and willing to resort to the worst tricks in the corpo playbook to preserve her control over Wolf Media, and save her son’s life.

Michael Gutierrez – Michael Gutierrez was a healthy teenage boy until he suddenly fell over at school, and was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease that has left him bedridden, and with months to live. He is incapable of doing anything for himself anymore, and needs near constant medical support to survive. His only hope is an experimental regenerative treatment by Foster Medical, a medical firm that caters exclusively to the rich and famous, but it is beyond the family’s means. A desperate mother, not eager to lose her only son, is willing to do anything to acquire this cure and save his life.

Samurai Jack – Jackson Moretz, better known as Samurai Jack, is a Santo Domingo kid born and raised. He was born in Santo, lives and works in Santo, and as he says, he’ll likely die in Santo. Jackson grew up a fan of the rock band Samurai, and idolised Johnny Silverhand, believing that he was a hero who stuck it to the corpos. Moretz collects Samurai merch, and both his personal abode, and office in the upper level of the Santo Domingo edgerunner hub, the Redline, are plastered in Samurai and Johnny Silverhand memorabilia. He got his start as a fixer organising gigs for rockerboys, and gradually diversified his portfolio into mercenary work. “SJ” is not to be trifled with, he plays things cool, but has a capacity for brutal retaliation if he feels wronged, or that he’s being manipulated.

Nightowl – Nightowl is a former corporate exec and fixer who co-owns and runs the Redline, a bar in Santo Domingo, with Samurai Jack. Distinguished by his slight frame, gaunt facial features, and seeming inability to smile. Nightowl has developed a reputation for reliability and discretion.

E1fb0i – Elfboy, stylised as E1fb0i, is Samurai Jack’s netrunner of choice. Kept on retainer by SJ, E1fb0i is enamoured with fantasy, and they are a prolific player of Elflines Online. They acquired biosculpting surgery to change their appearance to that of an elf. Rarely seen out of their customised Bodyweight Suit, and even more rarely seen outside of their netrunning den in the basement of the Redline. E1fb0i is good at what they do, otherwise Samurai Jack would’ve cut them loose a long time ago.

Rebecca (no, not that Rebecca) - Rebecca Owler, known on the NET by her handle legless_egg, is a netrunner who works for Samurai Jack and Nightowl. Injured in some unspecified incident as a teenager, she was interred in a biopod, unable to afford the treatment needed to recover. Rebecca operates out of a netrunner den in the basement of the Redline, occasionally working alongside E1fb0i.

SPOILERS FOR "THE FULL MOON!!!!"

Well, the thing we all knew was going to happen happened. ;_; ;_; ;_;

I had a feeling the episode would start with the duet we were shown earlier this month and it's so funny as well as entertaining, but the heartfelt longing we get from Stolas definitely encapsulates what we were waiting for. ;_;

I had a suspicion too that this would be when we saw the cherubs and DHORK agents team up, so I'm glad to see that weird combo (which will likely happen again ;) ). My, how the cherubs have fallen into sin with Collin being the only one to still have a conscience and not be consumed with vengeance. :/ Poor Collin. It'll be interesting to see what could happen if the DHORK agents actually get the portal to fully work because they sure have a lot of weapons and manpower now; maybe we'll see them again in "Mastermind" since we didn't see Blitz meet the DHORK agents again like we saw in the trailer. :/

I do appreciate that the cherubs wind up in Lust because if there was any ring that was going to expose them to so much that they consider vile and sinful (beside Pride ;) ), it was going to be Lust. ;) XD I laughed so hard at them thinking all the sex stuff was for torturing humans. XD XD XD The thing that definitely made me so happy though was we got to see Fizz and Blitz hanging out as friends again, with them even fist-bumping (that was sooo cute) and Fizz helping Blitz find some new toys for him and Stolas. ^_^<3<3<3

It doesn't surprise me that the cherubs were dumb enough to wait to attack Blitz instead of just doing it when they had the chance; plus, they were indeed not very covert as Moxxie pointed out. ;) I thought the fight was cool and showed that even with high-tech weapons, IMP are indeed the professionals. ;) Hopefully the cherubs don't help DHORK get actual angelic materials since before they were banished from Heaven they could summon their crossbows, but who knows if they still can. :/ I do find it funny that Agent One likes to wear a Loona furry suit, but hey, if it makes him happy. :)

That ending though was so tense and angst-filled as we hear Blitz spiral and beg to keep the book, only to then be confused as to why Stolas is giving him an Asmodean crystal, and the whole time you can see the tinge of sadness in Stolas even when he's smiling because he knows there's a chance he'll be rejected, but he just wants Blitz to be free. ;_; ;_; ;_; My heart broke at Blitz dismissing Stolas's feelings for him as some kind of role-play because although Blitz's belief that no one could possibly love him is why he can be so dismissive, it's just so sad to know Stolas has been giving Blitz signs that he cares about him but that it seems like they've been ignored/don't matter. My heart then broken again into tiny splinters at Stolas crying over Blitz's harsh words towards him because damn that was brutal to hear Blitz say such things that he can't take back and ones that felt cruel. ;_; ;_; ;_; It ending with Blitz trying to apologize only to be teleported out of the palace so as to show Stolas removing him from his life/he doesn't want to talk with Blitz right now is certainly a way to leave a cliffhanger, and now we're left waiting to see how they do broken up. ;_; ;_; ;_;

Here's hoping Blitz and Stolas make some progress in "Apology Tour."

I need to finally admit that I only have so much time to write and thus need to decide & commit to writing one particular thing instead of researching everything forever in the hopes that I will one day have time to write All the things. You have no idea how nuanced my internal discussions on the topic have gotten at this point, though. The next post will be a poll on what to write or post about first.

Running a TTRPG for complete beginners is always interesting in terms of where people fall on character concepts- like, I've seen a lot of beginners whose first question is "what can you do in the game" and then make the most basic interpretation of one of the first few archetypes they grasp (scholar wizards, knight fighters, etc), but when you go "it's a game of imagination" some of them will leap ahead with huge and amazingly specific concepts that the question is then "how do we bring this to the table mechanically according to your vision." All systems are created to do certain things and to suggest certain modes of play and archetypes- I've seen big dreams for every system I've run for or tried to set up a game for. I just really enjoy seeing both ends of the spectrum with people who are new to a game or to TTRPGs in general: what do I think the entry point is vs what is my biggest dream based on the idea of the game.

Jonathan Harker in Dracula (he apparently hates wide leg pants like he brings them up 5 times in two chapters) and calls random women "pretty unless you get close to them" like bro??)

Watson in Sherlock Holmes, just straight up calls people ugly and judges them by their clothes and hair

I haven't read more books from that time but it already establishes a pattern for me and it irks me so much

Edit: just remembered C.S. Lewis does this (to a lesser extent) in Narnia, like calls people's face unfortunate and judges one character based on her freckles (seriously Clive?)

These are both characters that are pretty much kind people when they actually interact with people, but their thoughts aka the narration is so out of pocket and judgy

So to reiterate: what in the fuck is up with that

Hi hewwo hi you've activated the OC infodumping session!

Theres quite a few of them so I'll just throw the big deal ones at you as an introduction!

I will give a quick content warning for body horror and blood for some of the images. those are at the end when im showing off my favourite oc

First up are the main group from my original OC world, the very originals for my cast of many morons who run around in my head rent free 24/7 365

Aurora, Avry, Jessi, Lusikka, Amaris, and Wrath

Aurora was the first oc out of all of them! She started out as my fursona back when i was starting to be online regularly, now though im well past that since Arty borty here has well since become her own character rather than just me but furry

Aurora is a Fennec Lyotternx, otherwise known as a furred folk Chimera in the oc's world. It simply means both her parents were a mix of some form so she's roughly 1/3 fennec fox, 1/3 lynx and 1/3 otter. She come form a long line of furred folk who protect a large forested area outside of a small town called Cedar Creek. She's also a magic user! She uses Phytomancy - plant magic. Though she's not great at it.

Avry Rayne is in fact my daughter i love her so so so much she's great! one of The Big Three ocs who are constantly on my mind at any given moment (you'll see the other two soon). if I were to actually take the time to write anything out for this group of ocs she's probably the closest to a main character. In a setting full of furries, mythical creatures, modern day magic etc etc She got the short end of the stick. literally nothing magic or supernatural wise. She's just you're regular ol average person trying to survive fighting a literal demon of shadow taking over the world for her own amusement. She's got mommy issues and is head over heels for her best friend, Jessi.

Jessi is the resident shapeshifter which Ive done some worldbuilding on and posted about awhile back here and probably the most level headed of the three. She certainly has her head on straight more or less. She's strongly tied to dragons which are a critically endangered species in this world. Jess is part shapeshifter and part werecreature- specifically a weredragon. Due to the fact she can't control it, her shapechange on the fullmoon resembles more the wolfman style of werewolves than just a straight change to the animal itself. The fact she can't control it is one of her biggest fears and around the time of a full moon she'll run off deep into the forest to get as far away from humanity as possible, hoping to lessen the chance of the weredragon hunting anyone she cares about.

Amaris is the shadow demon who is causing problems on purpose for fun. She revels in chaos and wants to see the world turn to absolute madness. in this world she is the source of all your sleep paralysis demon stories. She's actually an entity from another dimension who was cast out for an attempted hostile takeover of her home realm. She has complete control over shadows, to the extent that she has her own sort of backrooms esque shadow passages she uses to get around quickly. So long as she can fit through a shadow she can essentially teleport through it. Its not that hard for her to fit through things though. the small stature of 4'9" helps a bit.

Wrath meanwhile is whats known as an Incarnate. Incarnates are the physical manifestation of concepts and ideas. So like how we imagine Death as a skeleton in black robes with a scythe would be considered an incarnate in this world. There's only one of Each emotion and as we can guess, Wrath is anger incarnate. She's found herself working with Amaris to help spread chaos and destruction around the world after the shadow demon broke her free of her confinement by the Emotion Manifestation Obtainment organization (E.M.O for short) Wrath is a living weapon essentially and can't die so long as something out there can experience anger. Her limbs can shapeshift into any melee weapon and she gets stronger the more things around her experience her emotion. This can backfire though and she can get overloaded with anger and quite literally explode, having to reform her physical body at a later point.

Lusikka is a petty thief who has a lot of issues. She's an orphan who took to shoplifting for attention and well turned out she got really good at it. She's the leader of a group known as the silverware trio and uses a giant spoon to fight with, as silly as that sounds. She and the other two (Forcella and Kiridashi) started as a team of supervillians in their own world where they had a rogues gallery of food themed heroes who kept trying to foil their plans. This is where Lusi's dislike for tacos comes from. Now its just because she can't handle spice at all. She gets better and ends up with a wife and kids and she loves them so very much.

She still can't stand Avry being obnoxious though. something something shortest temper imaginable.

moving on from that setting,

BLAIR! Blair Daniels-Anderson my beloved! Another one of The Big Three who are ever present. She's my far cry 5 player character and she has like the most stereotypically country song background story imaginable. its fitting for her and her terminal yeehaw brainworms.

Anyways, Blair's first wife divorces her, takes the house and the car and here she is planning to move back home to Calgary to pick up the pieces and then she gets stuck dealing with a religious cult and stuck in hope county Montana where she continues to have a bad time alongside @rainydaze-rhys 's OC Rook. (Rhys if you're reading this hi hewwo hi bestie!)

Meet Colby! I love her, she has many much issues and is named after 3 different cheeses!

yes THIS is the one that has my brain in a chokehold. she is the one who's CONSTANTLY being rotated in the brain like a rotisserie chicken.

Colby grew up on Saturn's moon Titan dreaming of being able to see the universe. She joins the MIRA crewmate system and works on the Skeld ship as the ship's cook. They end up infected with a symbiotic alien parasite that shows up as all kinds of body horror on them. They're inspired by The Thing from the movie... well... The THING.

so like Colby gets their want to explore the universe but it comes at the cost of being permanently infested with an alien parasite that can and will do anything to make sure it and its host survive, which includes eating people. of course the crew has a medical scanner for respawning purposes so they're fine. but there sure do be a LOT of murdering from everyone on this ship.

She also ends up dating the ships medical AI who is an evil scientist and i love her very much also. incredibly normal about both Colby and their GF, Micah, who belongs to Rainydaze-Rhys.

Lore Revamp - The Warrens

Found within the Carrion Canyon, nearly where the land splits to allow the large river through between the Shifting Expanse and the Sunbeam Ruins, sits the settlement commonly referred to as the Warrens. Carved by draconic claw into the steep faces of the canyon walls themselves, the clan living within has tunnels that spiral deep into the earth. The depths of the caverns allow all it's citizens and visitors to escape from the brutal heat of the desert sun that beat down upon the land far above, at the surface.

Despite this, there are a few enterprising individuals that make their homes outside of the caverns in order to grow what hardy crops they can. A small orchard sits upon the lip on the canyon that overlooks the town's entrance, fed by a series of pumps and pipes tapping into an underground reservoir fed by the canyon's river, allows for the trees to be irrigated throughout the driest parts of the year.

However, those that tend to the orchard still follow a similar sleeping cycle to the rest of the clan - namely, they are largely nocturnal. While this may not be strictly necessary for those individuals that rarely venture out of the caves and tunnels, for those that must venture outside to go about their lives, this can be a welcome reprieve.

As a clan intentionally founded in a location in which their neighbors are fairly distant (for the founders are not that fond of the company of others), and near where two flight territories intersect, it has become a common stop for caravans and other travelers who aim to traverse the Shifting Expanse. The clan serves as an excellent point at which to replenish supply stores before crossing the desert, and a welcome rest stop for those who are already weary.

The Warren's position means that, despite still dwelling in a desert region, the clan has plentiful access to fish. While the great body of water separating the Shifting Expanse and the Sunbeam Ruins is some distance away, the largely draconic residents of the Warrens can reach the coast and return home fairly quickly, as long as they can fly as a decent pace.

Likewise, one may believe that a desert means that there would be a lack of food for the carnivores within the clan. However, between the orchard providing some forage for livestock, and desert-adapted animals such as the ampelope being excellent at locating food from the somewhat sparse plant life means that there is a good supply of meat and furs to the Warrens by the clan's ranchers. 

However, those that serve the role tend to be few and far between, as the herds of livestock tend to be diurnal, resting throughout the heat of the day, instead of sleeping through the day as many of the Warren's residents. In order to keep track of one's herd, and protect them from potential monster threats, a rancher will frequently keep an opposite schedule from the rest of the populous. As one can imagine, between going in to town only when everything has been closed for the day, and spending a majority of one's time in the canyon, ranching can be a very isolating line of work to pursue.

The town's source for those who are insectivorous is somewhat similar - some insects are kept at livestock, carefully raised for consumption. Thankfully for those who tend to these farms, many of the desert-dwelling bugs that they raise prefer dark, damp environments, allowing the farmers to do their work within the Warren's many caves. Farmed insects are fed with food scraps and other biodegradable materials, as to not let them go to waste.

Despite the clan being able to be largely self sufficient in terms of food, that does not mean that they never trade for food with others. Some popular treats can only be grown or found in more forgiving environments, making them difficult or impossible for one to secure by themself while never venturing out of Lightning's borders. Of course, trade will also frequently include metals and ores found in other places, in addition to wood, as there are very few trees growing near to the town.

While the clan dwelling within the Warrens definitely has founders, it's residents would be somewhat hard-pressed to try and name a single leader. As the clan founders, who had begun to create a new home far from other permanent settlements, did not wish to be around a large quantity of people, let alone be in charge of all of them, had quickly abandoned the leadership duties that others who had stumbled upon the burgeoning settlement had expected them to take up. This left the few enterprising individuals remaining to try and pick up what they could, splitting many of the responsibilities between them.

As a result, most of the citizens of the Warrens have as much say over the clan's operations as any other. While this may not be strictly true is all circumstances, and those more directly impacted or knowledgeable about a situation tend to be more favored in the resolution by the community. The clan elders will frequently be consulted should issues arise, as their experience and knowledge is usually highly valued.

The Warren's original founders still live in the area surrounding the clan, but dug their own small network of dwellings in an attempt to minimize contact with others. While one of them, Dricgo, is much more sociable than his partner, Riaza, all this means in reality is that should they need something from the clan proper, Dricgo is sent to obtain needed supplies. While others occasionally venture out to try and consult with the pair, the clan usually abide by their wishes and leave them be.

While there are some shops and merchants within the Warrens, they usually primarily serve the travelers that pass through. This is largely because between clan members, money generally is never used. The main form of transactions tends to be gifts, with the expectation that some time in the future one will repay the favor and it will all balance out in the end. In some cases, one may barter for the items they need, but that is usually viewed less as a necessity and as a fun hobby kept by those who are interested.

Instead, most of the clan's money is held by those in the markets who trade with outsiders. While one can easily give items to their neighbor and reasonably expect for that to someday be repaid, many travelers who pass through the Warrens do not do so again. The coin they leave behind is usually used to purchase needed materials and distributed as required to the clan at large.

While the Warrens are, at least a little, a place of commerce for those passing through, many expect to see the guard's cavern near the entrance to the clan's tunnels. Most who have not spent much, if any, time within the many caverns may expect there to be a set of laws that the guards enforce, that is not the purpose they serve. Most of those within the clan either solve disputes between themselves, or enlist the aid of a middleman to aid in negotiations if it gets especially heated. 

Those coming into the clan with ill-will are usually quickly refused most non-necessary services and sent on their way, with the guards only intervening if absolutely necessary. The reason why they are, at some points, willing to step in is due to the fact that sometimes, there is only a small line between someone wishing others harm, and the monsters the guards are tasked with slaying.

While those in more populated areas may not need to worry about monster attacks, the Warrens keeps a force of trained warriors to keep watch and prevent the vicious beings that dwell within the desert from breaching the caverns and causing damage, or injury, to what lays within.

jung hoseok (hobi, j-hope) hyung-line: medium height tier, dancer & rapper, distinctive high cheekbones and sunshine smile, laughs a lot but has that dance practice stern face when he's not joking, often indulgent wine aunt vibes, actual pre-debut street cred like rm and suga *just recently went for enlistment

park jimin (jimin) maknae line: technically shortest, singer: clear high tenor, trained dancer like *whoa*, flirt, smooth and stylish, pretty as a personality trait, maknae gremlin but with hyung maturity (caretaker), abs, falls off chairs (and only chairs? otherwise immune to gravity)

- these are some busy, busy elite-caliber performers at the very top of the game and i definitely am in awe. like the guys who technically aren't "dancers" in the group are still leagues above many regular official 'lead dancers' in skill - as a whole they are just functioning on another level and it is impressive. i understand army a lot more now
