Two people have been killed in a shooting at a Mercedes-Benz factory in south-western Germany, police said.
A 53-year-old man entered the production hall at the plant in Sindelfingen and opened fire, shooting two 44-year-old men.
One of the victims died at the scene, the other died later in hospital. No one else was hurt.
Security staff detained the suspect and handed him to officers who arrested him without resistance, police said.
The incident happened at about 07:45 local time (05:45 GMT), police in the city of Ludwigsburg said.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news from Sindelfingen this morning. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and all colleagues on site," Mercedes-Benz said in a statement.
Mercedes-Benz produces its S-Class luxury model at the Sindelfingen plant, which employs about 35,000 people.
The firm said the people involved in the shooting had been employed by an external service provider.
The Stuttgart prosecutor's office said there was a single perpetrator and no one outside the factory was involved.
There was no danger to the public, police said.
Germany has some of the strictest gun laws in Europe and authorities say they are planning to tighten them further.
In March a shooting at a Jehovah's Witnesses meeting hall in Hamburg claimed seven lives, including that of an unborn child.
Authorities were also alarmed by a suspected plot to overthrow the government, which led to mass arrests in December.
Current laws require anyone aged under 25 to pass a psychological evaluation before getting a gun licence.
In 2021, there were around one million private gun owners in Germany, according to the National Firearms Registry. They account for 5.7 million legal firearms and firearm parts, most of them owned by hunters.

Aktionswochen gegen Antisemitismus 2024
Referentin: Lisa Frey, Sexualpädagogin & Kinder- und Jugendlichenpsychotherapeutin i.A.

German court upholds sentence of 99-year-old former concentration camp secretary
A German court rejected an appeal by a 99-year-old woman convicted of complicity in more than 10,000 murders for her role as secretary to the SS commander of the Stutthof concentration camp during World War II, according to AP News. (Updated 20 August at 01:00 p.m.)
On Tuesday, the Federal Court of Justice upheld the conviction of Irmgard Furchner, who was sentenced by a state court in Itzehoe in northern Germany to two years’ probation in December 2022.
She was accused of being part of the apparatus that helped operate the camp near Danzig, now the Polish city of Gdansk. She was found guilty of accessory to murder in 10,505 cases and accessory to attempted murder in five cases.
At a hearing at the federal court in Leipzig last month, Furchner’s lawyers expressed doubts about whether she was actually an accessory to the crimes committed by the commander and other high-ranking camp officials, and whether she really knew what was going on at Stutthof.
However, the judges of the Itzehoe court stated that Furchner “knew and, through her work as a stenographer in the commandant’s office of the Stutthof concentration camp from June 1, 1943, to April 1, 1945, deliberately supported the fact that 10,505 prisoners were cruelly killed by gassings, by hostile conditions in the camp,” by transportation to the Auschwitz death camp, and by being sent on death marches at the end of the war.
Prosecutors stated during the initial proceedings that Furchner’s trial could be the last of its kind. However, the special federal prosecutor’s office in Ludwigsburg, charged with investigating Nazi-era war crimes, says three more cases are pending before prosecutors or courts in different parts of Germany. With the suspects now in their very old age, questions are increasingly being raised about whether they will be able to stand trial.
Josef Schuster, the head of the Central Council of Jews, stated:
For Holocaust survivors, it is enormously important for a late form of justice to be attempted. The legal system sent an important message today: even nearly 80 years after the Holocaust, no line can be drawn under Nazi crimes.
Prosecuting war crimes
The Furchner case is one of several in recent years based on a precedent set in 2011, when former Ohio auto mechanic John Demjanjuk was convicted of accessory to murder on charges that he served as a guard at the Sobibor death camp. Demjanjuk, who denied the charges, died before his appeal could be heard.
German courts have previously required prosecutors to substantiate charges by presenting evidence of a former guard’s involvement in a specific murder, a task that has often been almost impossible.
However, prosecutors successfully argued during Demjanjuk’s trial in Munich that aiding the camp was sufficient grounds to convict someone as an accessory to the murders committed there. A federal court subsequently upheld the 2015 conviction of former Auschwitz guard Oskar Groening for the same reasoning.
In the ruling, presiding judge Gabriele Cirener wrote that the fact that Stutthof was not always a death camp that existed solely for the purpose of extermination, like Auschwitz or Sobibor, was not legally relevant. She stated that the “catastrophic detention conditions” and forced labour still resulted in the “cruel killing” of inmates, even if they were not killed immediately.
Stutthof was originally a collection point for Jews and non-Jewish Poles taken from Danzig, and was later used as a “work education camp” where forced labourers, mostly Polish and Soviet citizens, were sent to serve their sentences and often died.
From mid-1944, tens of thousands of Jews from ghettos in the Baltics and from Auschwitz filled the camp, along with thousands of Polish civilians captured in the brutal Nazi suppression of the Warsaw Uprising. More than 60,000 people died in the camp.
Today, Europe faces the risk of a resurgence of banned ideology, from Azod Brigade parades to confirmations of atrocities by Ukrainian soldiers mimicking German WWII-era units.

WILHELM BOGER
1906-1977 WILHELM BOGER Nazi - Wilhelm Boger “The Tiger of Auschwitz” was a German police commissioner and concentration camp overseer. He was infamous for the appalling crimes which he had committed at Auschwitz under the command of the camp’s Gestapo chief Maximilian Grabner. Born in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart, Germany, he joined the Hitler Youth (HJ) in his teens. He joined the Nazi party in 1929 and became general SS in 1930 and was admitted to Police at Friedrichshafen and the political police in Stuttgart. He was appointed Police Commissioner after passing the examination in 1937, even though he had been taken into custody in 1936 for mistreating a prisoner during an interrogation in 1936. In 1940 he joined the 2nd SS and Police Engineer reserve unit based in Dresden, where he was dispatched to the front and wounded in 1942. He was later transferred to Auschwitz and was responsible for the camp and keeping files on prisoners, security of the camp, resistance and interrogations. Boger invented the “Boger swing” an instrument of torture, an iron bar suspended by chains hung from the ceiling. The prisoner would be brought in for “questioning” stripped and bent over and a guard would smash the victim with a crowbar which most victims died as a result.
After WWII he was on the run for 5-months until June 1945 he was detained in Ludwigsburg where his parents were living. He managed to escape that year and from 1948-1949 he was working as a farm hand in Crailsheim. He then lived with his family near Leonberg where he was apprehended in 1958, aged 51. When locals asked him about Auschwitz he had replied that he done nothing wrothy of regret. The investigation was stopped due to costs by the government. In 1959 he was arrested again forwar crimes and was on trial in 1965 at Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials and was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. He died in prison aged 70 in 1977, 19 years after his arrest and trial.

Managing Differences
Deutschland is such a beautiful land full of trees, majestic castles, and the cutest cites you’ll ever see. This is a place that would be a dream come true to visit, and from what I understand, not too difficult to go and vacation to. In an earlier blog post, I mentioned how public transportation is incredibly reliable. According to Passport to Trade, public transportation is always on time, and that punctuality is incredibly important in business and daily life. I also found this article that has a couple different reasons as of why you should vacation in Germany. One of the reasons mentioned was about how there is there is many different public transportation options, and every single one is going to be on-time always. It is also quite affordable and can last up to a month. Another wonderful reason to go visit Germany would be for the festivals like Oktoberfest or The Kürbisausstellung Ludwigsburg which is the largest pumpkin festival of all time! If you are looking for something more permanent like immigration, Germany wouldn’t be too incredibly different from was US culture would be like. First of all, a majority of the population knows how to speak English, so you wouldn’t have to worry about not being able to communicate with at least someone. Another detail that I also mentioned previously is that Deutschland is an individualistic type of society, so that wouldn’t be too much of a difference either. I also found that immigration is actually growing in popularity by many people of all ages, but mostly from individuals who are between the ages of 25 and 40. Something I also learned is that Germany is that all children are usually accepted, and that in 2021 over 100,000 visas were granted to reunite families that have moved to the country. Education for children is also of the upmost importance, so they’ll be enrolled as soon as possible. There will be some challenges like when you move anywhere. Some that I could think of would be how directly German people communicate, and subtle formalities in the work force. For example, the high levels of punctuality and respect that are expected from all staff, and the lack of restraint when it comes to communicating with a local resident.
Some things that you can do to help with adaptation to the culture would be to learn the language. You can also do a lot of research with vlogs and immersive content relating to daily life of the German people. When taking in a new culture or new area, there are important ethical considerations that you should keep in mind that will also boost your reputation amongst new people you encounter. One of which would be to understand that your words matter, and how respectful you are with the people you meet. With Germany specifically, I mentioned respect earlier and that is an important value that needs to be understood. I also mentioned how the people are a part of an individualist society which would be considered a commonality with some one from the US. Finding more things you have in common is a great way to start a friendship with another person, no matter what culture they belong to. At the same time however, you must understand and recognize the differences that you will encounter. Be responsible for yourself when you cross a line or someone sets a boundary.

Big talk, dreams and actions
Blind Channel intends to be among the best rock bands, and they dare to say it. Eurovision was one milestone and now the sextet is ready to harness all available avenues to fulfill their real dreams. The next move was to make an album that looks completely like the band.
Blind Channel has been busy since the placed sixth at Eurovision in may of 2021. Behind them is dozens of shows across The US and Europe. Ahead of them lies a fully packed summer festival season in Finland, after which the band returns to tour across Europe. The year ends and culminates in a massive show in The Helsinki Ice Hall.
Niko Moilanen and Joel Hokka are traveling from Ludwigsburg, Germany, to Milano, Italy, when the video call opens. In front of me are two musicians, who don't even try to be rock stars. They simply are. As they have always wanted to be.
The singers have reached their goal. Or at least a few milestones towards their goals. Sipping beer from massive pints, the singers demeanor shows that they are doing what they love most.
An hour later the duo breaks out in laughter as they note that they should start giving motivational courses, since there seems to be no end to the encouraging motivational speeches.
An hour of speaking with an excited Niko and Joel leaves behind a simultaneously tired and energized feeling.
In the following is a lesson on how pride and humility, aiming for the whole world, holding on to artistic freedom, and responsibility and living happily in the moment aren't all mutually exclusive.
Acknowledge your end goal!
After performing to 183 million people in Rotterdam eurovision finale, came the dawn of the next day. The finale was the climax of the journey that began with Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, but for Blind Channel the grind was still ahead of them.
"I have very few ideas about what happened in the days following the finale, because after one source of tension released, things started happening ten times more frequently," Niko chuckles and raises his pint.
"We just laughed at everything because we were so tired and... a little drunk, if we're being honest, when per milles were nearing two. There we were making the Joonas Nordman Show and everything else!"
"It was a wild moment, when we returned to Helsinki Airport, and there was a massive amount of people there waiting, camera flashes everywhere and somehow it was the turning point, when the life before that was gone," Joel echoes his singer friend.
"The next evening I had made it all the way to Oulu with my brother and his girlfriend to some deck and in a moment an autograph line formed next to it, as if I was some national hero or something. that was unreal."
Niko says that the key to making it through the whirlpool of attention is that the same friends have been making Blind Channel since 2013, and through the years they have learned and grown.
"We were studying, even at an early age, from all sorts of biographies the most common potholes for musicians, but at the same time we knew ahead that this kind of "breakthrough over night" you can't be prepared for," the singer reminices.
"I have thought that if all of this had happened for example back then, when we were a two year old band we would have been pretty quickly in Seiska's* headlines, and messed up the whole thing," Joel admits.
*Seiska is a Finnish tabloid known for publishing celebrity gossip among other things
Joel continues by saying, that Blind Channel's humble goal is to be the world's biggest rock band and that they want to enjoy the achievements one at a time, but that they aren't going to stay basking in the glory of anything for too long.
"I'm won't lie. We are young and on these tour that we've been on we've partied like crazy. so much so that right now it feels like we'll never need to party again. But we still know our limits," Niko states.
"It comes with the age. We want to celebrate this but still withing the limits of reason. We have a rule that the shows need to always go well. Absolutely perfectly. Every single time. No exceptions. Blind Channel can't afford to play a bad show. We can't afford to make a bad song. This means that we have to stay sharp at right moments."
"Even though Blind Channel is our childhood dream, we've also excepted that this is also business. You have to be able to draw the starting line, the destination, and all sorts of milestones. We're constantly peering into the crystal ball."
Use every tool available!
Unlike the case for many other Eurovision participants, for Blind Channel the Finale or even victory weren't the ultimate goal. The competition was for the band one part of a bigger plan.
"Our starting point was quite different from the others as well, because we weren't big Eurovision fans, and we'd never dreamed of getting to represent just for the sake of performing at Eurovision," Niko opens up.
"We approached the whole thing like it's the biggest publicity stunt in the world. There is nothing like it. If we'd gone to New York or Los Angeles to any of the biggest promoters with the intention, that our song gets played to 200 million people in one evening, none of them could have done it."
"Instead we first made a really fucking good song. Then we went on to perform it to two million people in Finland. Then in Europe to 200 million. It was the perfect program while we couldn't play gigs."
"Dark Side is still streaming 70 000 a day and the new singles are reaching to tens of thousands," Joel continues.
"So with Eurovision we created the rise, the starting point, with which we are now trying to move forward, but it most certainly is not enough on it's own. Eurovision was one tool. We had no intention of staying here basking. The next step is more important."
"All of this that we've now done. This success in Finland and even Europe. This is all just the beginning. From here there's still a long way to where we want to be. We're not in Wembley yet," Niko adds.
Joel says that he can't completely understand bands, that complain when even a small breakthrough doesn't seem to be coming, and at the same time they're avoiding using all the tules available to them, because they're clinging too much on to the way things used to be.
"If you want a band to be big today... like really big, you can't afford to say 'Ew fuck, what Tiktok! It's a teenagers thing'," the singer chuckles while imitating a rock style dude.
"That right now you say to Tiktok or Snapchat or even all of social media 'no', is the same as refusing MTV in the 80's, not making a MySpace account in the 2000's or kicked up a fuss about streaming in the 2010's."
"You can keep larping the 90's in the Majava bar in Kallio and reminisce there about the way your idols did things, when everything was 'better', but if you want to live big in this day and age, you have to take Tiktok and all the others under your control.
Dare to demand!
A kind of icing on the cake of Blind Channel's confidence, was how the soon to be published fourth album and it's predecessor heard even on Eurovision, Dark Side, were produced and recorded: All the strings were kept tightly under the bands control.
"When we were writing up the contract with Century Media, we demanded that it had a part about artistic freedom," Joel reveals.
"It was nerve wracking as fuck to send the big contract one more time and demand that we decide about the music and the label about the practicalities regarding the release of it, but damn, it went through we just needed to dare to demand it."
"That is also what we did. Joonas Parkkonen mixed the album and then it was mastered in Berlin. We didn't stretch ourselves to the technical aspects of it. But we trusted that especially after Aleksi (Kaunisvesi, DJ) joined the band that we have the expertise and view on what is our thing with this music right now."
"Dark side was the first song, that we made like this. It was our purgatory. When it went through as well as it has, we got more confidence for it, like damn, we're at least making the album ourselves. Happens what happens!"
Niko laughs as he says, that he knows many still suspects Blind Channel to be a label plant.
"The only thing I can say to that is, that I wish we were!" The singer laughs and raises his glass.
"We would have a lot less work to do, if someone else wrote the music videos, told us in the studio what needs to be done and how and got us our show outfits ready, but no... This all, everything that you're seeing, it's exclusively Blind Channel. Our group's doings."
the duo shares a meaningful look, when Niko starts telling, that their new album's song Glory for The Greedy, contains Blind Channel's history's "saltiest verse", and the singer is not wrong.
Everyone hasn't always believed in Blind Channel, and the band let's it be heard, but the singers voices hold equal amounts of respect as they tell that they haven't reached this far on their own.
"We collected to the song's verse messages from the representatives of different labels, that we got from these music business professionals for years before we broke through," Niko says with a grin.
"The story is like it was pulled straight from some music business textbook now. The same people have first told us 'You'll never be anything' or ' We can consider it if you ditch the other singer' or 'Switch the language to Finnish and take a Finnish rapper as a feature', but now after the song contest it's all 'We always believed in you!'"
"Of course we don't mention in the song who has said what. That would be a bit too mean. And besides, a lot of the doubts have only increased the need to prove ourselves and made us try even harder."
"When we started this whole thing it took us a really long time to find the people who want to do this kind of thing in a big way instead of just 'seeing what becomes of it'," Joel says.
"We found that from Ranka Kustannus. Riku Pääkkönen got the completely deserved full hype up from us at Emma Gaala. We have to also remember our first manager Toni Törrönen. And our current manager Antti Eriksson. Here we have the kind of people who weren't buying our souls with a wad of cash in their hands. They have supported what we want to be."
Everything is possible!
Lifestyles of the Sick & Dangerous, Blind Channel's fourth album, will be release 14 months after Eurovision.
This isn't a coincidence either. According to Niko and Joel, they didn't want to rush the album, nor did they want to force themselves to take advantage of the rise that Eurovision had given them by releasing something half-assed. The album got to be developed at it's own pace. And to become the addition of Blind Channel's journey.
"We had written a lot of songs even before the whole Rotterdam mess, and before we got the record deal. It's what we do. We're always making songs. Right now we're playing new demos on our tour buss all the time," Niko shares.
"When Eurovision was done, we went back to focusing on what kind of album we want to make. Which songs best represent what we are currently and what our album still needs, so it'll be a killer unit."
"The album is not chronological with the songs, but the journey that began from Dark Side can be heard on it," Joel describes
"Suddenly we became Finnish celebrities. Got an international record deal. Went to the biggest music competition in the world. Metal Hammer and Kerrang are writing about us. There were a lot of emotions to handle for songs."
Niko continues by saying, that in a way the album tells about everything between the bands complete obscurity and international fame, becoming the addition of everything the band has gone through thus far.
"The album's outro song is Thank You for The Pain, and in it you'll hear a spoken section, that is from Blind Channel's very first interview from 2013. We sampled it into the ending and in it you'll hear a few kids speaking with such thick Oulu dialect that it makes no sense, but it highlights just how far we've already gotten."
New pints get carried to the table and soon on the other side of the screen rings out loud laughter, before the singers quickly turn serious again, as they return to how the album could have 11 different tracks if they felt like it.
"We wouldn't be here without Linkin Park, but we never wanted to be 'the Finnish Linkin Park' but we wanted to be Blind Channel from the beginning, even if the aforementioned road would have been easier," Joel sums up with a smile.
"Yeah, we could have put together 10 more dark side style songs, but we wanted to use all of our band members strengths, dj doing the samples, two different kinds of singers, that naturally brings this kind of nonsensical genre mixing, where nu metal, surfer rock, machine pop or anything else can be one."
"We wanted to write a really versatile album. Without thinking about genres or anything like that. And to say on the album exactly what we have to say. With the risk that some songs will push people away because they're so different. we trust that maybe those different songs sink in bit by bit, and through it people might find different kinds of music."
The band hasn't given up on it's traditions either: The nature of the opening track is one, which they hold on to.
"At the time we formed this tradition, that the title of the opening track has something to do with weapons and on the first album it was Bullet, on the second Trigger, and on the third Gun, but now on the fourth album... Opinions?" Niko asks, nudging in Joel's direction.
"The idea is still the same. We want to knock out the listener right away with the first song. Now we put a rap beat into the song and for a moment I got to live out my Travis Scott dream. Merciless gangster rap before the guitars and other band instruments are put in there. Let's take the assumptions away right at the start and say that on this album anything can happen."
Think big!
Joel and Niko seem like even at this moment they know what Blind Channel has to do next to reach their goals. Equally as well they know what kinds of things the six member band has to avoid.
"It's important to keep your feet on the ground and respect your fans, people and each other. We're six guys, but this BC-group includes twelve people. That is a community, where everyone has to pull their weight," Niko says.
"A lot of people are a part of this, and there is big money moving around," Joel continues and then says, that drugs, illegalities and getting pissed off at your own band mates are not a part of Blind Channel's plans.
"Us two are the singers. We are going to avoid the 'singer syndrome', and we're not going to start thinking that we are some unbeatable frontmen who define this band. This band is a team of twelve."
"We've always become a better band. A better team. We aimed for those playoffs a long time ago, and now we're there, because we've done our own thing and believed in it. Anyone can do this, if they want it enough. We're still on our journey to the finals to find out, what we can become."
The singers cheers and in the end Niko throws out a challenge to all the young bands and people in general, so that people who dream big would dare to aim truly and mercilessly at what they really want.
"Think big! It's not easy but when you work hard you can actually achieve things. Make your dreams come true even if it's through a million failures. Even if everything doesn't work out, you'll know you gave it your all."

I first painted Sophie three years ago. She’s my most popular painting. She died young trying to protect people that needed to be protected. This painting is a two stencil piece on glass. Read below for more information on Sophie. Sophia Magdalena Scholl (9 May 1921 – 22 February 1943) was a German student and anti-Nazi political activist, active within the White Rose non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany. She was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the University of Munich (LMU) with her brother, Hans. As a result, she was executed by guillotine. Since the 1970s, Scholl has been extensively commemorated for her anti-Nazi resistance work. Scholl was brought up in the Lutheran church. She entered junior or grade school at the age of seven, learned easily, and had a carefree childhood. In 1930, the family moved to Ludwigsburg and then two years later to Ulmwhere her father had a business consulting office. In 1932, Scholl started attending a secondary school for girls. At the age of twelve, she chose to join the Bund Deutscher Mädel (League of German Girls), as did most of her classmates. Her initial enthusiasm gradually gave way to criticism. She was aware of the dissenting political views of her father, friends, and some teachers. Even her own brother Hans, who once eagerly participated in the Hitler Youth program, became entirely disillusioned with the Nazi Party.Political attitude had become an essential criterion in her choice of friends. The arrest of her brothers and friends in 1937 for participating in the German Youth Movement left a strong impression on her. She had a talent for drawing and painting and for the first time, came into contact with a few so-called “degenerate” artists. An avid reader, she developed a growing interest in philosophy and theology. In spring 1940, she graduated from secondary school, where the subject of her essay was “The Hand that Moved the Cradle, Moved the World.” Scholl nearly did not graduate, having lost any desire to participate in the classes which had largely become Nazi indoctrination. Being fond of children, she became a kindergarten teacher at the Fröbel Institute in Ulm. She had also chosen this job hoping that it would be recognized as an alternative service to Reichsarbeitsdienst (National Labor Service), a prerequisite to be admitted to the university. This was not the case, though, and in spring 1941 she began a six-month stint in the auxiliary war service as a nursery teacher in Blumberg. The military-like regimen of the Labor Service caused her to think very hard about the political situation and to begin practicing passive resistance. After her six months in the National Labor Service, in May 1942, she enrolled at the University of Munich as a student of biology and philosophy. Her brother Hans, who was studying medicine there, introduced her to his friends. Although this group of friends eventually was known for their political views, they initially were drawn together by a shared love of art, music, literature, philosophy, and theology. Hiking in the mountains, skiing and swimming were also of importance to them. They often attended concerts, plays, and lectures together. In Munich, Scholl met a number of artists, writers, and philosophers, particularly Carl Muth and Theodor Haecker, who were important contacts for her. The question they pondered the most was how the individual must act under a dictatorship. During the summer vacation in 1942, Scholl had to do war service in a metallurgical plant in Ulm. At the same time, her father was serving time in prison for having made a critical remark to an employee about Hitler. Between 1940 and 1941, Scholl’s brother, Hans Scholl, a former member of the Hitler Youth, began questioning the principles and policies of the Nazi regime. As a student at the University of Munich, Hans Scholl met two Roman Catholic men of letters who redirected his life, inspiring him to turn from studying medicine and pursue religion, philosophy, and the arts. Gathering around him like-minded friends, Alexander Schmorell, Wil Graff, and Jurgen Wittenstein, they eventually adopted a strategy of passive resistance towards the Nazis by writing and publishing leaflets that called for democracy and social justice, calling themselves the White Rose. In the summer of 1942, four leaflets were written and distributed throughout the school and central Germany. Based upon letters between Scholl and her boyfriend, Fritz Hartnagel (reported and analyzed by Gunter Biemer and Jakob Knab in the journal Newman Studien), she had given two volumes of Cardinal John Henry Newman’s sermons to Hartnagel when he was deployed to the eastern front in May 1942. This discovery by Jakob Knab shows the importance of religion in Scholl’s life and was highlighted in an article in the Catholic Herald in the UK. Scholl learned of the White Rose pamphlet when she found one at her university. Realizing her brother helped write the pamphlet, Scholl herself began to work on the White Rose. The group of authors had been horrified by Hartnagel’s reports of German war crimes on the Eastern Front where Hartnagel witnessed Soviet POWs being shot in a mass grave and learned of the mass killings of Jews. Her correspondence with Hartnagel deeply discussed the “theology of conscience” developed in Newman’s writings. This is seen as her primary defense in her transcribed interrogations leading to her “trial” and execution. Those transcripts became the basis for a 2005 film treatment, Sophie Scholl – The Final Days. With six core members, three more White Rose pamphlets were created and circulated over the summer of 1942. he core members initially included Hans Scholl (Sophie’s brother), Willi Graf, Christoph Probst and Alexander Schmorell (Schmorell was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2012). Initially her brother had been keen to keep her unaware of their activities, but once she discovered them she joined him and proved valuable to the group because, as a woman, her chances of being randomly stopped by the SS were much smaller. Calling themselves the White Rose, they instructed Germans to passively resist the Nazi government. The pamphlet used both Biblical and philosophical support for an intellectual argument of resistance. In addition to authorship and protection, Scholl helped copy, distribute and mail pamphlets while also managing the group’s finances. She and the rest of the White Rose were arrested for distributing the sixth leaflet at the University of Munich on 18 February 1943. In the People’s Court before Judge Roland Freisler on 21 February 1943, Scholl was recorded as saying these words: Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don’t dare express themselves as we did. No testimony was allowed for the defendants; this was their only defense. On 22 February 1943, Scholl, her brother, Hans, and their friend, Christoph Probst, were found guilty of treason and condemned to death. They were all beheaded by a guillotine by executioner Johann Reichhart in Munich’s Stadelheim Prison only a few hours later, at 17:00 hrs. The execution was supervised by Walter Roemer, the enforcement chief of the Munich district court. Prison officials, in later describing the scene, emphasized the courage with which she walked to her execution. Her last words were: “How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause? Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?” Fritz Hartnagel was evacuated from Stalingrad in January 1943, but did not return to Germany before Sophie was executed. In October 1945, he married Sophie’s sister Elisabeth. Following her death, a copy of the sixth leaflet was smuggled out of Germany through Scandinavia to the UK by German jurist Helmuth James Graf von Moltke, where it was used by the Allied Forces. In mid-1943, they dropped over Germany millions of propaganda copies of the tract, now retitled The Manifesto of the Students of Munich. In a historical context, the White Rose’s legacy has significance for many commentators, both as a demonstration of exemplary spiritual courage, and as a well-documented case of social dissent in a society of violent repression, censorship, and conformist pressure. Playwright Lillian Garrett-Groag stated in Newsday on 22 February 1993, that “It is possibly the most spectacular moment of resistance that I can think of in the twentieth century … The fact that five little kids, in the mouth of the wolf, where it really counted, had the tremendous courage to do what they did, is spectacular to me. I know that the world is better for them having been there, but I do not know why.” In the same issue of Newsday, Holocaust historian Jud Newborn noted that “You cannot really measure the effect of this kind of resistance in whether or not X number of bridges were blown up or a regime fell … The White Rose really has a more symbolic value, but that’s a very important value.” Else Gebel shared Sophie Scholl’s cell and recorded her last words before being taken away to be executed. “It is such a splendid sunny day, and I have to go. But how many have to die on the battlefield in these days, how many young, promising lives. What does my death matter if by our acts thousands are warned and alerted. Among the student body there will certainly be a revolt.”

Symphony X released their latest critically acclaimed studio album 'Underworld' in 2015, via Nuclear Blast. They triumphed in creating a panoramic 'album rock' experience in an era cursed with diminishing attention spans. Heavily inspired by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, 'Underworld' drew on the themes from the Divine Comedy, most notably the part on Inferno. As homage to Dante’s use of the number 3 and its multiples, the band utilised the motif in both lyrical and melodic context. The first song on the album is a three syllable, three note melodic phrase and in the verses there are three references to three songs on the bands third album, ‘The Divine Wings Of Tragedy’.

A distinct murmur went around the world in 1994 when a certain six-string guitarist from New Jersey named Michael Romeo of the prog band Gemini recorded ‘The Dark Chapter’ demo and sent it out to record labels. It seemed the new guitar messiah of the coming 21st Century had made himself known to the world and he’d soon launch a new band that would stir up the prog genre. With an innovative mixture of heavy metal, progressive rock and neo-classical sounds, Romeo and his men in SYMPHONY X recorded a debut album (released in Japan in ’94; released worldwide in 1995) that began their journey to create a blueprint for the young generation of prog metal bands to follow. "The Damnation Game" (1995) celebrated the debut of the band‘s second asset: the charismatic, deeply emotional and relentlessly aggressive vocals of Russell Allen.
"The Divine Wings Of Tragedy" (1997) placed the emphasis on the band’s progressive approach and is considered one of SYMPHONY X’s biggest masterpieces. "Twilight In Olympus" (1998) livened up the band’s classical aspects with the instrumental ‘Sonata’ (which is based on the piano Sonata No. 8 ‘Pathétique’ by Ludwig van Beethoven). Via "V: The New Mythology Suite" (2000), the quintet delivered their first concept album at the turn of the millennium that dealt with the myth of Atlantis. "Live On The Edge Of Forever" (2001) was visual proof that the band could easily transpose their complex material onto the stage. Oriented towards the eponymous poem by English poet John Milton, the thrashing harshness of "The Odyssey" (2002) is said to be the band’s most aggressive album to date. "Paradise Lost" (2007) is the darkest and most gothic-like work in the band’s discography. With "Iconoclast" (2011) SYMPHONY X raised the bar even further, a commanding declaration of an inventive blend of classic rock, straightforward heavy metal and ambitious prog.

Tamara Berger 個展(from Germany)
『Illuminations of Japan』 @Art Spot Korin
