Many sights and sounds had impressed me since our arrival in the past, but nothing had taken my breath away like my first glimpses of London."

Matthew and Diana are strutting their stuff in the streets of 1591 London, taking in the sights and looking very happy.

I am a time spinner. I have come from the future to seek out a special teacher. I’ve seen the Book of Life with my own eyes. I don’t understand how my magic is connected to it, but I do know this. My relationship to my magic, to Matthew Roydon and to the Book of Life are woven together. One cannot exclude the other.

A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES, 2.02.

A Discovery of Witches is a great show. It has magic, intrigue, courtly politics, a dash of time travel, and overall a very solid and compelling story.

What else is great is that it’s 3 seasons and it wrapped up the story. Like they actually planned out the arcs and finished the story in 3 seasons. No cliffhanger. No stretching out the source material to wring out as much IP as they can for as long as they can.

It’s almost a damn miracle they actually told a cohesive story, and it wasn’t bogged down with greed by beating a dead horse for 8 to 15 seasons only to rush the ending and totally obliterate the characters.

I also really like to see fantasy/magical setting in the adult world and played by adults. And not just any adults, but academics and scientists.

I feel like so many stories villainize higher education by making characters snooty or outright the villain who thinks they know what the world needs. These are well educated people trying to make the world a better place through their expertise.

The show starts off with the main character presenting her research and then doing more research, while trying to make a deadline. Like, so relatable honestly.

I’m at a place where I still love fantasy settings, specifically witches, werewolves, and vampires but many shows still revolve around high school/teenagers. While those stories can be fun, I’m just outgrowing that genre.

Teen fandoms also, I’ve come to see through adult eyes, are just so toxic. There’s really just none of the BS in ADoW fandom that I’ve seen in fandoms focusing on YA/Teen IP.

I’m also fairly new to ADoW, so maybe I just haven’t seen it yet but so far I like what I’ve seen.

Me, whenever I see poc, especially dark-skinned, characters in fantasy and/or historical period dramas depicted with dignity and respect and just simply given opportunities to have happy storylines that aren't solely fueled by trauma on the aspects of their race: Someone cooked here.
