The friends couldn't have asked for better weather for their little escape. The plan was to meet downtown and then head out in one of their cars to their line dancing class. Heather had started to worry that she and Adrian weren't going to get on as they once had. They'd been friends forever, but Heather hadn't actually seen her friend in some time. The last time Heather had seen her was at Adrian's wedding. They'd had a blast, but Heather didn't much care for Adrian's husband. He was fine, but Heather felt like Adrian had settled. None of that mattered as soon as Heather saw Adrian she ran up and enveloped her in a huge bear hug.

"It's definitely been too long!"

"I'm so glad you called! It's definitely been too long!"

The friends headed off for the first part of their adventure. Dancing had always been one of Heather's favorite activities and as she sashayed around the dance floor she remembered all the fun she used to have before she moved out on her own. There was a picnic lunch after the class, but Heather spied a water balloon tub and decided some childish fun was called for. Adrian was more than happy to oblige. Neither one was very good at throwing the but the laughs they shared more than made up for their lack of skill. They wandered towards the equestrian center where Heather was keen to talk to everyone, while Adrian was distracted with all the horses. They agreed to meet up at the bar later that evening.

Writing tips for long fics that helped me that no one asked for.

1.) Don't actually delete content from your WIP unless it is minor editing - instead cut it and put it in a secondary document. If you're omitting paragraphs of content, dialog, a whole scene you might find a better place for it later and having it readily available can really save time. Sometimes your idea was fantastic, but it just wasn't in the right spot.

2.) Stuck with wording the action? Just write the dialog then revisit it later.

3.) Stuck on the whole scene? Skip it and write the next one.

4.) Write on literally any other color than a white background. It just works. (I use black)

5.) If you have a beta, while they are beta-ing have them read your fic out loud. Yes, I know a lot of betas/writers do not have the luxury of face-timing or have the opportunity to do this due to time constraints etc but reading your fic out loud can catch some very awkward phrasing that otherwise might be missed. If you don't have a beta, you read it out loud to yourself. Throw some passion into your dialog, you might find a better way to word it if it sounds stuffy or weird.

6.) The moment you have an idea, write it down. If you don't have paper or a pen, EMAIL it to yourself or put it in a draft etc etc. I have sent myself dozens of ideas while laying down before sleep that I 10/10 forgot the next morning but had emailed them to myself and got to implement them.

7.) Remember - hits/likes/kudos/comments are not reflective of the quality of your fic or your ability to write. Most people just don't comment - even if they say they do, they don't, even if they preach all day about commenting, they don't, even if they are a very popular blog that passionately reminds people to comment - they don't comment (I know this personally). Even if your fic brought tears to their eyes and it haunted them for weeks and they printed it out and sent it to their friends they just don't comment. You just have to accept it. That being said - comment on the fic you're reading now, just do it, if you're 'shy' and that's why you don't comment the more you comment the better you'll get at it. Just do it.

8.) Remove unrealistic daily word count goals from your routine. I've seen people stress 1500 - 2000 words a day and if they don't reach that they feel like a failure and they get discouraged. This is ridiculous. Write when you can, but remove absurd goals. My average is 500 words a day in combination with a 40 hour a week job and I have written over 200k words from 2022-2023.

9.) There are dozens of ways to do an outline from precise analytical deconstruction that goes scene by scene to the minimalist bullet point list - it doesn't matter which one you use just have some sort of direction. A partial outline is better than no outline.

10.) Write for yourself, not for others. Write the fic you know no one is going to read. Write the fic that sounds ridiculous. You will be so happy you put it out in the world and there will be people who will be glad it exists.

Trying to find a decent place to live within a reasonable commute of Pentagon City and absolutely SCRUTINIZING every aspect of each potential elementary school’s GreatSchools.org profile. It’s really helped me eliminate a lot of areas outright. Like, I’m willing to be open-minded about schools. I never went to any school with a lower rating than 7/10 but given the right mix of not-completely-terrible test scores, improvement over time, and positive parent reviews, I’m entertaining possibly living in areas with schools that have 3/10 ratings.

But like. There are so many schools where the rich white and Asian kids are testing AT LEAST an entire standard deviation BELOW the state average and a modest townhouse is still renting for $4000/month. What the fuck is happening at these schools?? How are they not absolutely slamdunking the stereotypical “set it and forget it” successful student demographics??? Why the fuck does this mediocre townhouse with shitty schools cost $4000/month???? The rental market is out of control!

And don’t get me started on buying, which I’m not going to do. $650,000 minimum for any place that has a garage AND a yard, plus the current 7% interest rate… no thank you.

All these places are so isolated too. Like I walk five minutes away from my current house and there are three playgrounds, two parks, a forest preserve, and I can also go to the pharmacy, get three kinds of takeout, have a meal at the diner, buy groceries, and get my car tuned up. Meanwhile all these townhouses are like “We have SIDEWALKS and we’re NEAR a COUNTRY CLUB!!” because you can’t get anywhere worth going without driving at least 15 minutes to get there.

Anyway I used to think “I’d be happy living anywhere! Home is a mindset and what you make of it! People are basically the same anywhere you go since we’re all so atomized and mobile now!” but the more elementary school reviews and GreatSchools profiles I read and the more obviously-flipped townhouses I see, the more I wonder if I have actually become one of those Chicago people.

Sso from that day onwards Gotham had a new little cafe in a quiet little nook. The prices are super cheap. And it by far has the best fudge in all of Gotham. If you exclude Alfred's.

The gothamites love it. It's a favorite college hangout. Everyone is pretty sure the cafe is a front. Everyone is 100% sure of it. But in this economy who the hell cares. At least it's not nfts.

People can actually benefit from this because we can get like a whole breakfast for like 4 dollars ( an au where like Danny's 2000s world is like super cheap compared to the modern Gotham city and nobody taught the poor boy common prices of this world. Danny's thinking like how do I keep accidentally going into these rich people stores with their ridiculous prices, Ughh guess I'll have to buy this I don't want to go farther) and the quality is good too. The scrawny little twink owner sure as hell does not know much about ingredients prices or did the bare minimum study of business.
