War was a place for many things to the Illyrians.
Inner group fighting, fucking the young female healers, swearing, drinking, and brotherhood.
What it wasn't a place for, though, was princesses. Cassian was almost shocked as he watched Beron pull his daughter up onto his horse and begin leading her down to the Autumn Army. She looked so out of place in her dark olive green dress, long red hair falling into waves of fire down her back.
He had her dresses immaculately, makeup flawlessly laid to highlight her soft features, not a hair out of place around her crown of golden leaves and amber gems. Beron held her by her waist as if she were his prize, his pride.
Cassian supposed she was. An unmarried daughter of Autumn. She was untouched territory. An unmeasurable force. Unknown power. It was clear she was not treated as her brothers were, as her mother was. Not a bruise, scar, or mark was in sight on the skin he could narrowly see.
Her brothers walked next to the horse, armed and clearly charged with her protection. Rhysand seemed almost shocked as he spoke, “He's using her to lift the spirits of the soldiers,” he explained. “Reminding them of what they are fighting for.”
“By bringing an untrained, tiny, vulnerable female into a war camp? That's-”
Azriel interrupted Cassian by pointing to where soldiers from all courts had stood to greet the Princess of the Vanserra brood, “Exactly what the Autumn males were needing.”
Cassian watched for what felt like hours as the princess was dragged to each court's warriors, as her hands were kissed and touched by male after male. Something in his stomach began to bubble at the sight of it. Something he'd so rarely felt before.
Cassian didn't chase. He didn't long. He found his needs and wants in the closest willing female who met his standards and moved forward. This should have been no different, but it was. For some reason, it was. He took a deep breath, calming that side of him as he watched her like an animal, ready to pounce if someone so much as touched her.
Eris now took his sister up to Rhysand, and as if his brother felt Cassian's tension, he glanced at him, eyes smirking as he kissed her hand. “I was hoping you would allow me to see my brother,” even her voice was small and sweet. It set a protective fire alight in Cassian's stomach.
“If he were here, Princess, I would,” her face fell into a little pout at Rhysand's words, making him and the High lord laugh. “Still handle not getting your way well, I see.”
Her smile may have well been a healing tonic, something light and guiding in the darkness surrounding all of them. It was infectious, spreading to Rhysand and Cassian. “What can I say, I rarely hear the word no,” she admitted with a shrug.
“3 minutes,” Eris warned. “I need her back in 3 minutes or Father will come searching.” Rhys only nodded, offering the Princess of Autumn his arm and smiling as she took it.
Cassian had heard rumors, whispers of her beauty, her full curves, of the way she could bring courts to war with nothing more than a lingering glance, but seeing the only daughter of Autumn in person made the stories fall in comparison.
It was rare for an Illyrian male to stand in silence to observe a female, yet the camp grew quiet as Rhys walked her to Devlon. She was passed with him and Rhysand as guards between the Illyrian camp leaders. Her words were delicate, stroking every ounce of pride she knew a male had. Their strength, their dedication, their sacrifice.
Cassian watched as she worked magic, healing the mentality of the warriors, healing their souls with words of kindness and admiration as she thanked them on behalf of the females waiting for them at home.
The strange feeling came back and began to eat at Cassian as she then moved to praise him, “General and commander,” a soft boon, a call to home. “Prythian will never be able to show the gratitude you deserve for the time you are giving to protect our lands and families.”
“I am just doing my job, Princess,” he tried to keep a straight face as he looked into those eyes. Eyes reminded him of his favorite bourbon.
“Perhaps, but the job is thankless, tiring, and I can see your hurt,” she pressed her hand against his chest above his heart. “War is a heavy burden. To send males you care to face death is not a task one should take so lightly.”
“Y/n!” The voice from the distance had her hand dropping just before her magic was able to do more than kiss Cassian's soul. “Get up here, now!” Beron stood at the hill top, finger tips blazing as anger set in.
“Coming father!” She bowed her head to Rhysand. “High Lord, General.”
Cassian couldn't help but make the joke quietly, “Running off when things were getting romantic, Princess?”
She only smiled as she turned back, “Perhaps things between us can get romantic another time?”
As she turned away, he felt it. Watching helplessly as Beron's hands went out, lifting her onto a horse again as he lectured her. It was a new life line. A new sparkling compass. It pulled at him as she shot him one last smile, almost pleading with him to follow her.
But he couldn't. Not yet, at least.

Written with permission, this is the third of three stories based on the heartbreakingly beautiful comic created by @kurakura0-0.
"It doesn't make sense!" Madara-sama complains, slapping the table in frustration. "Happiness is a thing we just are! Why does he have to be so determined to be happy?"
"Because he does?" Hikaku sticks his head though the door, completely sick of the argument that's been going on for months. Twin expressions of incomprehension stare back at him and he sighs. "Because you married the man he's in love with."
"I married the man he's in love with?!" Madara-sama's voice reaches a volume that Hikaku hasn't heard since the war, and he instantly knows this conversation is going to be all over the tower in a day.
Probably less.
