Hello! I'm a writer, and I have a question about the credited social media part of the application. While most of what I've written is SFW, I have a couple E rated works on there. Does that mean I wouldn't be able to list my AO3 account as a credited social media?

As long as any and all NSFW content is properly tagged so that all users can navigate around it if they wish, you may use your account in our credits. We just want to avoid directing our audience towards immediately available content, especially as this is a mixed-ages event!

Hi! So, I wanted to join in the zine, however, my art contains mostly a ship that most of the AA fandom doesn’t like… will that make it harder for my application to get into the project? Like, I don’t want to waste anyone’s time haha (a friend told me about this project and I’m very interested in it!)

We are not evaluating applications on personal opinion, and are not a space for discourse. We absolutely want to accept the differences in our community within the project and its contributors! However, we cannot and will not permit any proship content here: including, but not limited to incest, pedophilia, and other age-gaps. Any applications engaging with this content will be rejected. Please take this into consideration, and do what's best for you! Thank you for your interest!

For the art contributions, what does it mean that the drawing has to be in an “RGB color profile and 300 DPI in A5 format”?

While your samples may follow any format, these are the required speculations for all page art contributions to the zine! That is, your digital canvas must be created in the A5 ratio [5.8" x 8.3"] and in 300 DPI. As this is a digital zine, pieces should be done in the RGB color profile, meant for digital display— all art programs should have this setting by default, and others may have only this setting.

While this may not apply exactly to traditional artists and other creators who must photograph or scan their work, they will still be expected to do so in high quality, and resize their work into A5 sizing. But for any and all contributors who need help in getting the correct speculations, they're welcome to ask the mod team!

what is the rule on using past art or art inspired on past art? i have some old art of one of the gramaryes that i would like to rework and im wondering if that's okay

All contributions must be originally created for Magical Menagerie within our creation period— past works are not permitted for use in the zine. However, you're free to create a new piece re-imagining old concepts, if you'd like! Just be sure to let the mod team know, and we'll be happy to see it!

The stage is open for questions! As we'll be looking for all artists of any medium and experience, some traditional artists might be wondering how they can present their work. Well, we've got a few tricks for you!

🎙️ Any tips for photographing traditional art?

From one artist to another, we’re happy to help! To start, be aware that lighting is your most crucial factor. Your light source should be bright and even to avoid lighting glare and shadows, especially from yourself and your photographing device. Time of day and type of lighting will also affect your colors with a yellow or blue tint. So, we recommend photographing your work propped-up in bright, natural daylight; when working with graphite, wax, or other shiny materials, also experiment with your angle to ensure that no light is affecting them. However, even in the best of lighting, you might notice that your colors appear different in cameras and scanners than on the page: don’t be afraid to correct, or even exaggerate your colors through any preferred editing software. The Photos app on your phone often has many simple editing capabilities to start off with!

Remember to treat your work professionally, and show it off at its best! This means you should not display work that has been damaged, torn, or stained. Additionally, crop your work properly so that the content fits to the edge of the screen: do not show empty space that is not part of the work, including your workspace and surrounding objects. Rotate and edit as necessary to correct straight lines that may be affected by lens distortion. For all traditional artist applicants, we expect contributions to be scanned or photographed professionally to the correct dimensions.
