just realized that it's september which means next month is october which means it's basically november and i'm supposed to write a novel in november and aaaaaaaaaAaAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

so, this is nice to see. like. sometimes it just feels like i’m not accomplishing anything, right

my ao3 wordcount for 2022, as of today:

that doesn’t include at least 120k of original stuff, if somewhat sleep-deprived memory serves. that doesn’t count the 20k oneshot rotting while i put off finishing the last scene, or the 60k fic that’s just getting started. it doesn’t include ideas i started and pushed aside halfway through.

i hate to risk sounding like i’m bragging but damn. it’s not a lot. it’s not anything, to most people, especially being that it’s free labor.

but that’s half a million words there, easy, and i know all of them are good. i have faith in my competence.

whatever else comes out of this year, i did that much. and i know wren from last november wouldn’t have dreamed of a 500k year, let alone a 500k year i wasn’t even trying to pull. the only person i ever have to impress is my former self, right?

I've never done a NaNoWriMo in-person Write-In, my old school hosted a one day, all-day writing camp, one time, when we split into groups of around 5, for brainstorming, and then each tried to write a complete story on a given theme over the course of the day.

Communal writing like that is a lot of fun. I guess we (or at least some of us) never fully outgrow our toddler enjoyment of "Parallel Play."

Facts & Questions: The Game

🍃 The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) is a Kickstarter-funded project currently in development. Due to the scope of the story, we will be releasing it serially over several years to Steam and Itch.io, and discounting it while in early access. The earlier it's bought, the cheaper it will be overall, and you'll only need to buy the game once!

🍂 Not all routes are currently available! As of Nov. 1, 2024, you can play half of Shae and Maeve's routes; both approximately 50k words. If you're not sure about paying for an unfinished game, feel free to check out our free demo first. It consists of Vol. 1, Book of the Traveller (the pre-route content). Differences between the demo's Vol. 1 and the paid game's Vol. 1 are marginal following our August 1, 2024 re-release of the demo.

🍃 The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) has a recommended reading order (Vol. 1, then 2, then 3, etc.), which will correspond to the release order of the routes. For more information on our reasoning behind this, click here.

🍂 Due to its setting, The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) will occasionally feature instances of characters speaking in Gaeilge, i.e. the Irish language. All instances of Gaeilge are linked to an internal translation tool, which is voiced by Nigel McKeon, a Gaeilgeoir.

🍃 The main character is yours to shape. At minimum, you must choose a nickname, pronouns, and one of four default appearances, the last of which can be your own artwork (instructions are included in the game's files). You may also choose to discard the True Name…

🍂 All routes, both current and upcoming, will have both romantic and platonic choice options. If you're uninterested in romance, feel free to make friends instead! No matter the nature of your relationship, you will still be able to reach the good end. Or the bad one.

🍃 Our cast consists of two men, two women, and two non-binary characters. All are romancable no matter the MC, but some characters are asexual or on the aromantic spectrum, which may impact aspects of their romances.

🍂 If you are a Mac user and are having issues launching the game via the Itch direct download, refer to this guide for troubleshooting before sending us an ask. We strongly recommend purchasing the game through Steam instead of Itch if you are a Mac user; it is the best way to avoid issues with launching the game.

🍃 NDM is very intentionally set just prior to the onset of the Great Famine, which is both thematically and textually relevant to the leftist, anti-imperialist story we're aiming to tell. If you would like more insight into this, refer to this post.

🐎 There are secrets to be found in this game, with more yet to come. Prepare yourself for a lot of horse related shenanigans. 🐎

Facts & Questions: The Company

🧵 Moirai Myths is a five-person company based out of Canada. The core devs/founders go by Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. All writing and programming are done by this collective, i.e. the Fates.

🪡 Moirai Myths has a two person in-house artist team consisting of Kazane, our Character/UI Designer, and Melinoe, our Environmental Designer. In addition to them, though, we have had a number of guest artists assist us with the creation of sprites, CGs, and an assortment of other materials. DCA Advent Calendar!

Presenting the totally spectacular idea of an calendar!

Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of chocolate, but I've personally always wished advent calendars had a bit more to them. You get me? Yes, I could buy those pricy luxury ones, but you never know if you'll end up liking them.

I want something written. A book, with chapters that release every day leading up to Christmas. But to my knowledge, something like that doesn't exist.

Until now!

Introducting, a book advent calendar! Because if I couldn't find one, I was going to make it!

Whats inside? Oh a whole bunch!

A complete, Christmas themed story containing 12-13 chapters. The chapters will be released every other day leading up to Christmas.

In the perfect world I would like to do 2 stories - each with 12-13 chapters - alternating release days leading up to the 25. However writing that many words seems impossible given the time crunch I would have to do. To make it easier on myself I am aiming to only complete one story. However if I have time I will include a second one.

This project will take a lot of work; I'll need to write around 25-50k words between Nov 10th-Dec 20th alone- 50-75k if I do a second . It will be a bit time-consuming, so I'll likely drop off the face of the earth for the time.

I may commission a few artists (If my wallet will allow it) to add a cover art and little pieces to the chapters. I wish I could guarantee, but we will see how the time goes leading up to December.

Nanowrimo

As per usual I'm torturing myself trying to write 50k words in November (though probably not through the official Nano website, RIP. Oh well there's still my best friend Microsoft Excel)

I've had a running list of projects I want to finish by the end of the year, so here's hoping some of these will be churned through in November 🤞

They include:

Michelangelo's Hands: a post-2022 meeting canon (slight) divergence about artist burnout and trauma and having your craft turn against you. And learning how to rest. (Normal Dreamling material)

Good Horses: a teen/high school AU where Dream is a sheltered--though more like caged--rich kid and Hob is the feral wild kid who helps him embrace his own self-determination and freedom. ....With a little twist.

Covetous: after Hob rescues him from the fishbowl, Dream offers him sex as a boon (though really more like intentionally misunderstands Hob's words to make himself the reward. Hob did not even ask for a reward btw). The rituals, they are intricate, etc. Exploration of greed, risk, wanting, and intimacy.

Order of Operations [The Complex Math Elopement Chapter]: Math AU Dream and Hob get spontaneously engaged and have a nice fun sexy time. That's literally it XD.

In Waking Dreams [Final Chapter]: I NEED to finish this one we're nearing the 2 year anniversary of starting it XD. Basically just the wrap up of the story, questions answered, new understandings, new intimacies, you wouldn't think it would take me this long, and yet.

Deja vu, Deja connu [Chapter 4]: the "Dream was Hob's prior lovers in disguise" fic. Ch. 4 is the conclusion of the Eleanor arc. It's an emotionally intense chapter and hard to write but I have so much planned for this fic and I need to just get back to it 😔

the better to see you with, my dear [Spy AU] [Chapter 4]: another fic that exists so much in my head and not on paper! But the chapters are short so it really should be achievable. Ack.

[Undisclosed original short story]: this is actually due Nov 15, I am behind, Help.

There are other projects as always but these are hopefully my priorities for the year 😓 though I've historically been bad at prioritizing. Watch me just write a bunch of new things and not finish any of these :| Always happens!

november writing diary

for my november challenge, i'm going to try and keep track of my writing here.

for my challenge, i'm attempting the 50k month, with 1667 being the daily goal. i'm rewriting a novel i finished the first draft of a couple of years ago. i reworked the outline oct 27 - nov 1, making minor adjustments as i go (and as jules looks through it and gives me notes)

summary: the novel follows the story of katya arrison, the princess of othusen. when an assassin comes after her, she is forced to flee the country with her maid and their new friend, valentina. valentina brings them to her home in the western country of thanavel, a country conquered by othusen years ago, their people captures and enslaved and forbidden from returning. there shouldn't be thanavels living here, but there are. and as katya adjusts to life among them and working with valentina's brother, nicholai, she learns secrets about her family, and she learns about the former thanavel rebellion dedicated to freeing their enslaved people. no one should be enslaved, katya says, so she and her new friends start scheming to make sure that their people aren't anymore. they bring the rebellion back, work together, and fight against othusen to save their people.

on nov 1, i finished the outline for this story. i wrote the prologue and part of chapter one, which came out to 2060 words.
