Since people are talking about Olympic women’s boxing for all the dumb reasons, let’s try to talk about the cool stuff going on this year.
The best boxer on the women’s side at the 2024 Games is arguably Busenaz Surmeneli. A 2020 Olympic gold medalist, the 26 year old from Turkey is looking to join Claressa Shields and Nicola Adams as the only women to repeat gold medals at the Olympics. She’s a 2x world champion, a champion at the Euro Games, and Euro boxing champ. She’s set to fight in the quarterfinals against Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng.
I said Surmaneli is the arguable best fighter at the games because there is another elite boxer competing - Ireland’s Kellie Harrington. Another gold medalist from the 2020 Games, Harrington is the heir to Katie Taylor’s amateur dominance for Ireland. Harrington is an accomplished amateur with world championship medals, euro championship medals, and euro games medals. She’s got wins over people like professional world champions like Caroline Dubois, Maiva Hamadouche, Beatriz Ferreira, and more. Fantastic boxer. Set to face off with Beatriz Ferreira on Saturday (Aug 3) in the semifinal for women’s 60 KG. Which is a fantastic fight.
This year, the Refugee Olympic Team’s flagbearer was a woman named Cindy Ngamba. Originally from Cameroon, the young woman lives in the UK. She was forced to flee Cameroon as a teenager and picked up boxing in the UK at 15. She’s been unable to secure citizenship or a VISA. After coming out as lesbian at 18, it was determined they couldn’t send her back to Cameroon because it is illegal in the country. While Cindy wasnt considered a big favorite, she won her round of 16 bout against 3rd ranked Tammara Thibeault of Canada. One more win would secure her a medal at women’s 75kg!
Over in women’s 57 kg, we have Ashleyann Lozada. Lozada is the first woman to make it to the Olympics from Puerto Rico! Nesthy Petecio became the first woman to ever medal at the Olympics for the Philippines in boxing (and 2nd ever) when she won silver back in Tokyo. She’s announced she will retire after this Olympic cycle and is looking to give the Philippines only its 2nd gold medal ever! There are so many personal stories that I could go into. Hell, everyone is talking about Imane Khelif but not her story. She grew up rural village in Algeria, selling scrap metal so she could get bus fare to make it to the gym. Marcelat Sakobi, of Congo, used her exit in the round of 32 to remind everyone that there is an ongoing genocide happening in Congo.

Part 1 Epilogue
AO3 Version
My AO3
Masterlist
"Shit, it's brick out here."
"You're telling me." The difference in temperature from the sweltering venue to the city almost made Hobie want to go back inside and fuck her in the bathroom instead. But Y/N did say that she had a blunt at home and she seemed very eager to smoke it. Or fuck him. Either one was good.
He took a moment to admire her. He was right about her Demonias. They were long with lot's of large buckles and he loved that he still towered over her even though they were platforms. Now that they were out of the dark building, he could see the various tattoos that littered her arm and thigh. Fuck him, he was going to have fun with her.
She told him that she didn’t live far and they could walk there. That was fine with him, he didn’t want to get on a cramped train anyway. He did wish that he could just swing them there, but then he wouldn’t see the way her ass moves while she walks.
He would be lying if he said she didn’t intrigue him. From his knowledge, Atlanta, Georgia was considered the Deep South of America. It had to have been hundreds of miles away. And this area doesn’t seem like a place someone who was swimming in money would be living in. Not that it was terrible, more so humble. Like where he lived.
“So, tell me,” he calls out to her. She was walking a little ways ahead of him, courtesy of Hobie wanting to ogle her. She turned around when he spoke. “How does an Atlanta babe find herself at a Rico Nasty concert in Brooklyn?”
She waits for him to catch up to her then starts walking by his side. “Huh, it’s a…long story.”
“I don’t mind.” He answers honestly. Since they’ve left the concert, Hobie has felt a strange pull towards her that exceeded his feeling of lust. He wondered if she felt the same.
She went quiet and opted to look thoughtfully towards the ground. Hobie began to backtrack. “Or, I could shut up and let you sit on my face instead. Whichever one you want.”
She squealed and hit his chest making him laugh. It wasn’t really a joke, but Hobie’s glad to see that he didn’t make her uncomfortable. “Nah, your good,” she reassured him. “I can do both.”
“Oh?” Hobie raised his eyebrows and gave her his full undivided attention. She takes in a deep breath, let’s it out, and begins to tell him her story.
“Well, you seem like someone who can appreciate a rebel.”
“Yeah?” Hobie bemused. What would this girl be rebelling against? “So, what your like a runaway? Parents, maybe?”
She looked away. Ah, he read her like a book. Then she dropped a bomb on him. “Eh, kind of. More so the Atlanta Police Department.”
He froze. She giggled to herself pretending to not notice and turn around when she was some feet away. She knew he wasn’t expecting that. No one does. She could count on her hand how many people up here she’s told and he was one of them. She trusted him, and she doesn’t know why. She hoped he felt the same.
Hobie couldn’t take his eyes off of her. When he realized how far she was, he ran to catch up. “You're on the run from the Atlanta PD?” She couldn’t contain herself enough and she let out a snort and nodded her head. Hobie shakes his. “No. I don’t believe it. You’re having a laugh.”
“I’m deadass.” She answers still laughing. Hobie drops his head in utter disbelief.
“Well what in bloody hell did you do?” The both of you start walking again.
“...You might not know but, a couple years ago there was a huge uproar of protesting here. In the US, I mean.”
Hobie did not know. He assumes something terrible must have happened, and he’s sure that something like that would have reached London. Maybe it didn’t happen on Earth - 138.
He gingerly shook his head. “I was a part of them. I would organize with some close friends and hand out water and snacks while we were there.” She explained.
“My parents weren’t too happy about that. I had just graduated and I wasn’t going to college. I had a job at a tattoo parlor so…they thought I was a failure.” Hobie listened intently to every word she said. “They would say I just love to bring trouble and always used me going out as an example.”
“They were afraid an officer would come to the door next. And then one day shit went left and we were getting sprayed with tear gas. My stupid ass picked up a can and threw that shit. I guess it hit one of them in the face, I don’t know. I couldn’t see shit.” She giggles and he laughs with her.
“I was pinned down and put in a holding cell for about a week.” She continues.
“Shit.” Hobie knew a few people who that’s happened to. Every story shares the same thing, it’s fucking terrible.
She nods. “Yeahhhh…then my parents kicked me out.”
“Shit,” he exclaims. She continues to nod. “So is that how you got here?” She shakes her head. Hobie gasps. “There’s more?” Nod. He gasps again making her laugh at him. “Tell me.”
“Okay, Okay,” She waits to calm down a bit. “I was just staying with friends after that. Then, maybe some months ago, there was this project announced for the city.” Hobie frowns noticing how much more dejected she had become. “They were going to cut down a forest to create a ‘training ground’ for emergency services.”
“What the fuck…?” Hobie was appalled.
“You can imagine how that sounds to civilians, right? A mock city for law enforcement to play cops and fucking robbers.” She spits out. “I was part of the groups of people who stayed in the forest to prevent construction.”
Just like before, he stopped again. This time, in complete and utter admiration. She smiled at him. “That’s…amazing.”
“Thank you.” She nods her head back to the path so they can continue walking. Hobie stands just a little bit closer to her now.
“So...did shit go left again?” He asked only half joking. She grimaced.
“It was bad. There were a lot of gunshots, and screaming. And fireworks.”
“Fireworks?”
“Fireworks.”
He stared at her expectantly. “And what did you do with them?”
She looks around cutely while smiling. Hobie knows that whatever she did, she didn’t regret it for a second. “Maybe I lit up and threw it at one’s foot. And then it lit the leaves on fire.”
He can’t hold back the laugh that kept from his throat. “Ha!” He clapped his hands and looked at her. “What happened after that?”
“I think he recognized me from the protests or maybe I’m just a hot topic, because the way that man came at me and mowed me down.” Hobie jerked his head back.
“What?”
“Boy, yes. That man tried to beat me with his baton.” The story just kept getting wilder and wilder.
“How did you get out of that?”
“I stole his taser and shot it at his chest.”
“No, your taking the piss,” he shouted excitedly. “No you didn’t.”
“Hold on now because he was still holding me so I got shocked too.” Hobie cackled at her. “It worked though. He let me go and I ran away with some of the others. Only a few people stayed behind. I went back home and woke up to my face on the news the next day.”
The the emotional rollercoaster that Hobie was one was something for the books. He had never felt such quick changes in such little time. He was shocked, then sad, then impressed, then elated, then sad again. What is this girl’s life?
“Man I had to get the fuck out of there. My friend took me up to Maryland where her family lived. Then they brought me here. I got a lil’ ugly ass apartment and a new tattoo job. Made a couple friends, and now I’m here. With you.”
That last part wasn’t expected for either of them. It just came out. But it felt nice.
The two of them looked at each other and basked in their presence. She could feel the pride and admiration for her coming off of him in ways. She could see it in his eyes just as brown as hers. Good. He wanted her to.
A car pulled up from down the street. The both of them were released from their trance and looked. They recognized those kinds of headlights anywhere.
Hobie fought the urge to try and hide before the cop car got to them, as he didn’t want to scare her. There was no reason for her to run from NYPD, right?
Wrong. She grabbed his hand and slipped into the alleyway.
Hobie just let her pull him along. She clearly knows what she’s doing. After coming out on the other side of the street, she begins to keep her eyes alert. She lets go of his hand and continues walking. She just won’t stop giving him reasons to want her, huh?
“And what was that about?” He teases. She smirks at him.
“I didn’t come to New York to be a good girl.” And it was as simple as that.
She walks a few more feet then turns wondering why he’s not saying anything. But when she meets his eyes her heart start beating in anticipation. He was staring her down hard. His smirk was small and his eyelids were low. She couldn’t think of anything to say.
Hobie uses her surprise to his advantage. He walks up to her and pulls her into a tiny space between two buildings. It wasn’t much of an alley, but it did enough to shield their bodies from the street light; it only shining his wicks as he towers over her body and presses her against the wall. He nudges her chin up, winks at her, then meets her lips. Her hands rest on his shoulders as his arms trap her in. He resists putting his tongue in her mouth, as she still had her makeup on and this sweet but desperate kiss would turn sloppy.
He’s the one who has to pull away, her eyes were still closed when he did. “How much longer do I have to wait before I can have you?”
She catches her breath and tells him, “We’re only a couple minutes away, Hobie.”
Hobie leans down again and kisses her neck. She shudders and moves her hands to the back of his. Hobie gives her soft smooches, one lick, and a bite. Then, one more kiss, before he finally pulls away. He tugs her back onto the street and nods his head down the path. She starts to pick up the pace.
~
Her building wasn’t too shabby. At least the walls looked freshly painted. The inside of her apartment looked very cozy. She had rugs wherever it made sense to put them and low beam orange-yellow lights. She was walking ahead of him and turned around to speak. “Get comfortable on the couch. I’ll be right back.” Then she disappears down a hallway.
Hobie pulls off his boots and places them against the wall. Then he takes off his jacket and a few extra accessories that were a bit uncomfortable now that he had no adrenaline. He walks into her living room and plops himself onto the comfy, leather couch. Faux, he hoped.
He rests his arms and hangs his head backwards over it, eyes closed. Before Y/N disappeared down the hallway, she had flicked a little device on the wall. It must have been the heater since Hobie had just heard something blowing air in the walls. He lifts his head up and takes in his surroundings.
It was a bit small, but perfect for one woman living alone. There were unlit candles on almost every surface, and a beats pill sitting in the side of the room. His favorite sight, by far, was a fat bong sitter right on the coffee table. He chuckled to himself. She could probably live here with a significant other.
It was times like this that he wishes he was normal. He wishes he could wake up to a beautiful face, smoke something, leave home to work, dismantle corporations, or just spend time with his friends, then come back home to that same face, light some candles, and enjoy the rest of his night in her arms. He doesn’t understand why he’s thinking of her when he imagines this, but he invites it.
She comes back with a burner and a small Bic lighter. She uses the burner to light the various candles and Hobie admires her. She still had her clothes on except her shoes which he was happy about. He really wanted to see her tits in those fishnets. Her makeup was off. Her skin was glowing. Her Bantu knots were still in her head. He wondered if she would let him help her take them out, but he’s sure she just wants to fuck and get it over with.
He stops watching her to think about it for a second. When they’re done smoking and having sex Hobie would leave. Not just leave, go back to his own dimension. The thought that he couldn’t keep tabs on her, maybe follow her Instagram or even get her number hadn’t even crossed him. He didn’t like it.
His face must have seemed troubled, because she stopped and looked at him in concern. “You good?” She asks getting his attention.
Hm? I’m fine, love.” She nods and reaches into her pocket and throws a condom onto the table, then behind her ear to take the blunt out. Then she sits next to him on the couch.
“Want some music?” She asks. Hobie nods. “I’m all punk’d out. Can I play RnB instead?”
“Please do. I feel like chilling right now.”
The pill begins to play soft drums and a bass before Erykah Badu starts singing. He liked music from Miles’s universe, regardless of the genre.
It’s like an unspoken agreement that they would be hanging out for a while. She lights it up, takes a couple puffs, then hands it over to him. He does the same. He takes longer drags producing a much larger cloud then breathes it all in. She looks at him incredulously.
“Ay? Problem, love?”
Her eyes narrow. “You think you’re so cool?”
He takes another drag. “I am.”
She grabs it from him and does a French inhale. Hobie couldn’t stop looking at her. He reaches his hands behind her back and pull her even closer to him. Her legs rested on his. She hands it to him.
“I told you everything about me. What about you? Did you travel to America just to see Rico?”
Hobie shook his head, trying to rack his brain for a proper explanation. “I travel around a lot. Had a pen pal who lived here and I came to see him. He told me about the concert so I went with him. Not as interesting as your journey.” He takes a drag. “Although I’ve had my fair share of trouble with cops.”
“Is that why we click so well?”
He smirked at her. “Yeah.” Another drag. “But, as banging as you are, you’re not on my level.”
Raising her eyebrow she sits up. “And why the hell not?” She jokes.
“Haven’t killed a cop yet.”
It was her turn to be shocked. She gave him the same fascinated look he had. “You’ve killed a cop?”
“Check the laces, innit?”
She stretches her head over the couch to look at his shoes and sure enough, his laces are blue. Speechless and filled with admiration, she freezes. Her neck is exposed, and Hobie doesn’t stop himself from licking it then giving it a smooch. She gasps and shudders. Slowly she smiles as she sits back down and stares at him.
“Does that excite you?” Hobie asks. She nods. He shifts, his pants beginning to get uncomfortable. He puts the blunt down on the side table, grabs her and pulls her into his lap. Her center collides with his crotch and they both groan. Hobie picks up the blunt, puffs on it to light it up again, then hands it to her. “Hit it nice and slowly. And lift your head up.”
She does as he asks. Hobie pulls her neck down to his mouth and his begins to bite and suck on it. She whines and takes the blunt out of her mouth, not being able to focus on it. Hobie hums in desperation when she starts grinding on him.
“You’re a proper sket, aren’t you?” He whispers. He’s sure she has no clue what he means, so he brings her face down to look at him. “Just a big fucking slut.”
She bit her lip and nodded. Hobie smirked, takes the blunt and drags, then kisses her. The smoke escapes their conjoined mouths as they explore them with their tongues. She starts to suck on his, making him hold her tighter to his body. Hobie makes a sound of pleasure in his throat that ripples through his chest. He pulls his face away from hers and they pant while staring at each other.
“Take this shit off.” He lays her down onto the couch and stands up to pull his shirt and jeans off. She takes off her shorts and fishnet bottoms at the same time. Before she could take off her top, Hobie holds her thigh and squeezes it. “Only take off the shirt.”
She nods and pulls the crop top off. Her tits fall in unison constrained by the fishnets. Hobie could moan at the sight of them. He was right about how good they would look. He doesn’t waste anytime in getting between her open legs and grabbing them. He lets his thumb flick her nipples, enjoying the feeling of fabric and skin. Her small moans go straight to his member, and he decides to take his underwear off completely. She braces herself.
He is long and curved. She knew he would ruin her when she got him home, but she underestimated how nice his dick looked.
“Don’t get scared. I’ll take good care of you.” He tells her.
“Yeah you better,” she tells him. She begins looking around. “Hey, where is it?”
“This?” He pulls out the blunt from seemingly nowhere then the lighter lighting it up once more. He hands it to her then leans over and takes a nipple into his mouth. Her moan was lethal, and Hobie loses his resolve. He was going to tease her, but he couldn’t deny the pleasure shooting through his body as he licks her nipple through the small diamond hole. She begins humping the air.
“You’re desperate to be played with aren’t you, love?”
“Uh-Huh” she says breathy. Her eyes are red and lidded. Hobie gets an idea.
“Hand that over,” he takes a couple more puffs giving her a kiss afterwards. She reaches out for it and he smirks at her. He holds it away from her, rubbing her thighs. She lets out an exclamation.
“Excuse you. That’s my weed.”
“What’s yours is mine.”
“Um, what’s mine is mine.”
Hobie trails his finger to her wet center, playing with her thong before pushing it to the side. He puts his thumb on her clit and she flinches. “Oh…”
“Yeah. Stop talking all that shit.” He begins to rub his thumb around it, his finger getting wet with each pass over. She’s whimpering and jerking her hips into his hand. “You like that?” All she can do is nod.
Hobie slows down and switches fingers. He smokes while inserting his middle finger into her. As it sinks further and further, she lets out a satisfied moan. He pumps it in and out of her pussy, a squelching sound filing the air.
He leans down and puts his tongue on her clit not letting up on fingering her too. She lets out a loud moan. Hobie puts the blunt on the floor, obsessed with the way her pussy gushes in his mouth. She starts to hump his face. Hobie watches her hand begin to reach out to him, then he grabs it and puts it on his head, wrapping her fingers around his wicks. He moans when she begins to pull him further into her pussy. He pulls his drenched finger out grabs her thighs and grips them tightly. He shakes his head back and forth, sucking and spreading her juices across her vagina.
“Ooo, I’m gonna cum.”
When he hears that he lifts his head and wipes his mouth. She whines but he shushes her by taking the blunt, holding it to her mouth, and she takes a drag from it. She is completely relaxed as she breathes it out, her eyelids lidded and eyes fluttering into the back of her head. He thought it was the sexiest thing you had done that night.
“Fuck, you’re peng.” Shit, he has got to start learning American slang. “That was sexy. I want to see you do it with my dick inside you.”
He takes the condom and rolls it on his dick, groaning under his breath from how it feels. He aligns himself with her hips.
“Ooo,” she lets out. “But wait, you don’t want some head?”
Hobie shakes his head and jerks himself. “I want you now, beautiful.” He keeps the blunt in his mouth and slaps his dick on her pussy. Her juices splash onto their thighs. Hobie grunts.
Keeping his head down, he looks at her face. Her eye lids are still low, but he can see her beautiful brown cornea staring at him full of lust and want. With the blunt in his mouth, he talks out the side of his mouth. “Beg for it,” he says.
Her eyelids widen, but the promiscuous look on her face doesn’t change. “What, baby?”
“Mm,” he says pleased by the pet name. He takes it out of his mouth and smiles at her. “Beg me to fuck you like a whore, love.”
She scrunches her shoulders up and tries to close her thighs, but she smiles and bites her lip. She liked the degradation and embarrassment of it all. Hobie liked it too. He pulls her thighs apart again. Placing his dick on top of her pussy, he waits for her to follow his instruction. “Come on, I know you can, pretty girl. You want this dick don’t you?”
“Yes, baby.”
“Call me baby again.”
“Please fuck me, baby.”
Hobie pumps his dick even more. He places the tip right at her hole, becoming evermore impatient. “Fuck, now say my name.”
“Hobie…mmm…” he slowly sinks himself into her.
“Fuck, say it again.”
“Hobie…” They sigh together when he’s fully sheathed inside of her. Her walls are already clamping around him. She’s so wet, and ready for his dick. Hobie keeps himself inside her and lights the blunt again reveling in her desperation. He takes his precious time to smoke some more while she begins to whine and grind herself onto him.
“Hobie, please fuck me.”
“Wait.” She whimpers for him, tears begin to form in her eyes from the depravity.
“Hobie…”
“If you keep saying my name like that I might stay inside you like this.”
“No, please don’t. I need it so badly.”
He inhaled a ghost. “Yeah?” He slowly unsheathes himself then slams back into her. She yelps.
“Yes, daddy,”
Hobie whistles. “Oh, I didn’t know you had that in the vault. You wanna keep calling me that, Atlanta babe?"
“Start fucking me and I’ll call you whatever you want.”
Hobie chuckles. “You got a mouth, don’t you?” He holds the blunt to her mouth again, grabs her hips, then starts fucking her. "I like baby a little more." She blew out the smoke the same way, it coming out in puffs from Hobie’s humping.
“Shit, love. You’re amazing.” He takes the blunt away and places it on the side table. Hobie grabs both sides of her hips and begins to fuck her harder. Their moans fill the apartment. Hobie stares at her beautiful breasts bouncing in her fishnets. Hobie’s too tall to lean down and suck on them, so he grabs one instead and squeezes it. She looks into his eyes and grabs his face. She smiles at him. Hobie’s eyes fill with curiosity.
“You can smack them if you want.”
Hobie slows down in disbelief. Then he smiles and starts fucking her harder. Hobie takes his hand and smacks one, as she requested. She moaned with a permanent beam on her face. Hobie is completely and totally enamored. He stops fucking her and pulls himself out.
“Come sit on me.”
“Okay, baby”
Hobie sits upright on the couch. She climbs on top of him and grabs his dick, loving the little grunt he let out She inserts him back inside her. They moan together while she sinks down onto his curved length. She pauses when he’s fully inside, his dick hitting places she didn’t even know could feel so good.
She grabs his face and pulls it up to meet hers. They stare into each other’s eyes for what felt like forever. Hobie lost himself in hers. He couldn’t move or speak or think. All of his emotions were portrayed in the way he looked at her. He wanted her, badly. In this moment she became everything to him. Then she started to rock.
“Oh, shit,” he muttered embarrassingly. The sounds that left his love’s mouth were lilted and pleasured. It didn’t take long for her to go faster. “Just like that, babe.”
Hobie’s breaths are loud and raunchy, while she lets out small pleasured hums. He takes his hands and rubs up her torso. Hobie wraps his arms around her waist and embraces her tightly. His head rests in her neck as he shifts down the couch the begins lifting his hips up into her. She doesn’t sound so quiet anymore.
“Oh…Y/N…” he whines.
Something inside of Hobie broke and he felt completely vulnerable. If she were to ask him anything, he would answer truthfully. He wanted to tell her everything. About the spider society, him being a spider man, the multiverse and everything within it. He wonders if she would accept it. Hell, he felt as though he could, she reacted better than he imagine she would when he told her he’s killed a cop.
For some reason, he felt like he could trust her. He thinks if he did tell her the whole truth, she wouldn’t even bat an eyelash. How would she react if he opened a portal right then and there and brought her to his own apartment in his own universe? Would she be okay with it? Would she even come in the first place?
He liked the idea of keeping her with him. He liked the thought of seeing her all the time without the risks of inter dimensional travel. Just coming back home, after the most tiring and troublesome day of working for Miguel, and seeing her beautiful body and even more gorgeous face.
Mm, he really liked it.
“Ngh…fuck, Y/N,” he whines into her ear, holding on to her body for dear life.
“Hobie, I’m gonna cum,”
He smacked her ass then pulled her face towards his. "Call me baby."
"Baby, I'm gonna cum." He bites down on her shoulder and begins to really pound into her forcing quick breaths from her lungs.
When the both of them come undone, they stare into each others eyes, not saying a word. She slowly grinds into him, and it overstimulates the both of them.
“Fuck, doll,” he whimpers looking between their stomachs. He was completely seated inside of her, and made him want to go for a second round. It normally would take him a minute to get himself back up, but with the way she was yearning for him with her eyes, it won’t take him long before he flips her around and takes her from behind.
As the both of them were coming down, Hobie began to feel an overarching sense of anxiety. This wasn’t Spidey-sense as there wasn’t any feeling of danger. No. Hobie was feeling…grief.
Grief from what? Why is it that he didn’t want to stop humping into her? Making her whisper curses into his ear? Was it because if he did, that would mean what they were having was over? If he pulls out of her, he’ll put on his clothes, find an alley, and travel back to Earth-138. Hobie can’t see or contact her. He would be gone forever.
Did she feel the same? Is that why she refuses to let go of him? Why she sounds like she’s on the verge of tears as she continues to milk his dick?
He could use some rest. He wanted nothing more than to finish smoking and fall asleep. But, when he thought of his bong at home it felt…wrong. As if there was a question and that wasn’t the right answer.
Why is he instead thinking about finishing what they were smoking then falling asleep on her bed? He needed to get a fucking grip. So he knocked out of his stupor. It felt like a bucket of cold water splashed over him and he came back to reality
She felt the shift. The thought they both shared that it was time to stop. Their time together has come to an end. The toll of a bell rings through her chest, and she fights the tears as she climbs off of him, kissing him sweetly before she goes.
Hobie sits there and looks at her standing up. He enjoyed that kiss. He wanted another one. He needed another one. He swallows his spit and asks her, “How was it?”
She smiles at him shyly. She was just the prettiest thing he had laid eyes on. “Amazing, Hobie.”
He smiled in content and relief. “I live to please,” he joked. It was otherworldly for him.
She giggled and walks by him, but before she could go, Hobie grabs her arm and pulls her down towards him. He captures her lips in a blissful kiss, then lets her go so she can walk to her room for a minute. Hobie isn’t sure what she’s doing, but while she’s gone, he lets his mind run. Tonight, he had found a perfect woman. She was beautiful and disruptive, not performative in anyway. All the qualities of a superhero in one civilian body. If anyone deserved the spider bite, it was her.
This…can’t be the last time he sees her. And why does it have to be? No one cares about the casual travel rule; everyone visits each other’s worlds all the time for whatever reason. The only thing was doing it sparsely so Miguel doesn’t catch on. Hobie could pop in here and there, right?…but would she want that?
How could it even work? He has no way of contacting her, so she’ll never know when to expect him. Is she just supposed to wait for the one day he can finally show up?
This was frustrating. Hobie always breaks the rules. He does what’s not supposed to be done, but he can’t figure out how this relationship would ever work. He can’t bring her with him, lest her particles stretch, bend, and spread across space and time, and he can’t stay here. His people need their spider man.
Damn, he wants to keep her so bad. She is perfect. Even if he could get to America back home, he would never be able to find her. The story is different in every universe. Hell, she probably wasn’t even in America.
She comes back into the living room adorned with pjs to see Hobie standing with his clothes back on. The condom had long been thrown away. Some of his belts and accessories were off as well as his jacket, but he looked as though he was ready to go. She felt…broken. And she didn’t know why.
This wasn’t her first one night stand, but she doesn’t think she’s ever clicked with someone like this before. Definitely not a stranger. Definitely not a fine stranger like him. He was perfect to her, in every sense of the word.
And she to him. Certainly, this was his Gwen Stacy. “You goin’?” She whispered. She cleared her throat and held up the roach. “Thought you would want to finish this.”
Hobie could feel that she was just as desperate to get him to stay as he was inclined to. He looked into her longing eyes with some of his own feelings, and considered a possibility. If Miles can have his Gwen from a different universe, why can’t he have the same? It worked for Miles.
And he knows the answer. It’s because she’s a regular person. Hobie is Spider Punk. He doesn’t belong here, and she doesn’t belong with him. But it wouldn’t hurt to dream of getting what he wanted.
He clears his throat. “I, um…” he couldn’t find the words he wanted to convey. How does he say, “I’m a spider man from a different universe and we will never see each other again.” without scaring her from how clinically insane it sounded?
Luckily, she speaks for him. “I’m saying…you can stay the night.” She finishes confidently. “If you wanted.”
He did. He did want to. He wanted to stay with her so bad. But he shouldn’t. He’s spent way too much time here, and he has no idea what would alert Miguel…he should go. He should go. He really should go.
Hobie…
Go.
“I would love too.”
Her beautiful smile makes its appearance and the doubts that Hobie had melted away. He drops his things and start to take off his shoes. When he walks towards her, he notices how badly she’s struggling to contain her excitement and he knows he made the right choice.
“…Just for the night,” She says, giving him the roach.
“Yeah.” He takes it from her and grabs her hand to walk down the hall into her room. “Just for the night.”
He’s gone before the sun is up the next morning.
ending a/n: I hope y’all liked this. I love writing angst so much y’all don’t even understand I had to put some in here. And yes, he takes her hair down for her.
I am cursed with writing way too much and I apologize for all that reading. I hope you still enjoyed it. It was very fun to write and it’s probably one my most favorite things I’ve ever written. I love Hobie so much, maybe I’ll write for him again idk chile. Maybe I’ll write these two again in an unrelated fic. Or maybe I’ll continue this and y’all can get y’all’s happy ending. Maybe. I don’t rly write those lmao.

Surprised Jenna - like many other Latino/Latina people with influence have already - hasn’t come out to endorsement Kamala after Tr*mp and his supporters made that Puerto Rico garbage comment
HEY.
SHE'S 22 YEARS OLD. AND SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO DO SHIT. YOU CARE MORE THAT SHE DOESN'T FIT YOUR PERCEPTION OF A YOUNG WOMAN WITH A POSSIBLE INFLUENCE ON HER FANS WHO DOESN'T "USE" THAT POWER. LEAVE THE GIRL ALONE AND STOP INSULTING HER INTELLIGENCE, INTEGRITY, AND TAKE ON THE WORLD. YES, SHE IS A CELEBRITY BUT SHE DOESN'T OWE ANYTHING TO ANYONE.
🤭
Yes, m'dear.
I expressed the same sentiment of yours that earned me the ire of the shitbird anon I just quoted verbatim a few days ago.
I hope that everyone remembers how silent Ortega is being on this, especially when she's made a big shit about "wanting to be the Puerto Rican Dakota Fanning" (even mentioning this in newer interviews, still), whining about not having/seeing representation, etc. My critics here hate seeing me crit her up, but she's the one who puts herself and some of her views sparingly out there; but this Puerto Rico thing is just as big as the insults that happened in 2017 after Hurricane Maria (the paper towels, the lack of response from that POS orange fuckface). That ugly ass diaper wearing motherfucking imbecilic rapist from Hell wanted to trade it for Greenland. Our baby girl here was only 15 then, but she is now old enough to fucking put her platform where her mouth is (yeah, as the days have gone by, my anger about it has only risen, especially since we're even closer to Tuesday).
I'm not Puerto Rican, but I am Mexican and Spanish on my father's side. I'm a full on burrito with extra rice (my mother is Southeast Asian)
If I were famous and had a platform like she does, I'd have been begging my fans to vote blue since Day 1, because 1) we know Trump hates us brown people to begin with and has been saying horrific things since the 2016 campaign and 2) Project 2025 is terrifying and facets of it are already cutting into our lives and making a huge mess of it for women, trans people, and people of color. I mean for fuck's sake, Tennessee (our Jairo's home state 💕💔) ratified a law earlier this year that brings back Jim Crow era-like anti-miscegenation discrimination regarding marriage (it was targeted towards 🏳️🌈 marriages, but if an officiant objects to solemnizing the marriage of a mixed race couple, they're legally allowed to do that per the law...even Jon and Cairo [if they were real] wouldn't be able to marry if the officiant objected to Jon marrying an obviously not white Cairo). It's exactly what the Heritage Foundation wanted, and it's only going to get worse if the orange fuckface is let back in.
As usual I digress, but this shit is serious.
Anyway, all of the most famous contemporary Puerto Ricans have spoken up about the floating island of garbage and the whole "Latinos love making babies"/have no pullout game (which yanno, Ortega should really be on top of too, it was a DOUBLE insult to her and her family), but she's ✨busy✨. Too busy to stand up for her mother's peoples, but not too busy to make TikToks with Thing. Fuck that, and y'all should keep it in mind the next time she does say shit about politics.
But here's a celebrity who has (another Puerto Rican who has a massive, massive number of 🏳️🌈 wlw fans, even though she too is into guys and married), and I love her for it:
"Oh, but Tor, that wasn't an endorsement!" — Okay babies, 4 years ago vs. now
Bonus "Like" from Johnna Dias-Watson that Imma take for soft endorsement, so even freaking Divina has a tiny voice here...and she's queer. 💕 🏳️🌈💖✨
Once more, if Ortega finally does come out for Kamala, I will issue corrections and apologies, but it's almost too fucking late — the election is only five fucking days away — and it'll likely be too little. There are already a good handful of kids her age who think that it's okay to either vote 3rd party* or sit it out, spouting rhetoric that is well-observed and intended but impractical.
*Psst: No, it's not okay to vote 3rd party in our solidly 2 party system in our general election. The last two times a crapload of people voted 3rd party, it gave us Bush & the Iraq War and Trump & his maelstrom of domestic destruction. Republicans adore 3rd party candidates for the general election because they fucking know the kind of people who will choose them are mostly sanctimonious, ignorant and/or unhinged leftists whose votes would otherwise be unfavorable to them. Cut the shit and get serious if you're one of those 'but Republicans and Democrats are the same!' crap à la Chappell Roan (the elder Gen Z whose attitude about our politics is influencing other Zs). They are not the fucking same. Just looking at the SCOTUS picks should tell you that it's fucking laughable every time someone says this. Democrats are also not the ones who are passing misogynistic anti-abortion and phobic anti-🏳️🌈 and anti-🏳️⚧️ laws that affect everyone at their state level. Do your due diligence AND your civic duty towards your fellows and pick the one who isn't intent on destroying anyone who isn't a white (male) Christian nationalist.

Academy (Manhattan), 2022.
I’ve never patronized a business so much in six month’s time. That business was Academy Records / LP’s. I had the urge to buy one single record that was on my mind (Boulders’ Rock And Roll Will Never Die) and pulled the trigger on that plus much more. I found more city-centric records and tapes on its’ other Discogs handle and in the turn of the year made two online purchases with them. For the final day of this past Winter, I took an impromptu visit to Academy’s Brooklyn (Greenpoint) location and bought more of that magic in person. Why? City stores have that specific charm that none of the other local stores on the island have. By that, I mean types of artists and sounds easily found there and nowhere else. Last year’s visit to Williamsburg’s Rough Trade made the best example of it and explains why I spent almost $420.00 there.
I read that they had another location on the lower East side of Manhattan (L.E.S.) which I’ve been meaning to go. After my check-up on Lexington Av., I could not miss the opportunity. I’ve already visited six island stores with four to go, so consider Manhattan’s Academy a ‘bonus round’ - one of two to be exact.
It wasn’t far from Lexington Av. taking the crowded ‘6’ line downtown to East 12th Street. It was a leisurely trek under the canopies, scaffolds and tree, walking past the everyday city life and numerous groups of people standing around waiting for the ride to take them to their next event. Across the street from Academy was the playground hopping with urban youth of all colors shooting hoops and getting loud with one another. Another few feet across the street and here I finally am. What I noticed on the front door before entering was a sign that said “masks required”. Luckily, I saved mine from the clinic.
I walk in and Academy’s Manhattan space isn’t as ratty and dingy as its Brooklyn spot. No crusty carpeting but a concrete floor partially painted blue and walls only in slight decay. There’s shelves and white boxes of stock all along the right side up until the cassette racks. More shelves opposite the entrance and over the small island of wooden crates. Walk past the counter on the left and opposite that was a listening station of two of three working turntables. More shelves and white boxes on each side in the back section of the store before reaching their office. Good news: $1.00 and $3.00 hip-hop / rap, rock, soul, synthpop and new-wave records were all for the taking.
I pick a spot, any spot to start digging. That was their small used-industrial section. Right off the bat I find Test Dept.’s “Machine Run (Compulsion)” e.p., a true metal-on-metal attack and one of my all-time favorite industrial works. I was happy to pay $12.00 for that one. Ω+ followers know that I always make my way to the used-jazz section and they didn’t disappoint there. That copy of Hank Crawford’s Tico Rico, the one with his ‘I-could-care-less’ face on it, was a win. Hubert Laws’ Then There Was Light Pt. 1 on CTI featuring Bob James, Ron Carter, Steve Gadd, Richard Tee, and brother Ronnie Laws was another must-have because of them. And I got my first Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes record Dancing In The Sun. No Onsaya Joy, but that song which still stayed in my head all these years was enough for me to pull the handle on him.
Though Academy wasn’t Riverhead’s Sunday Records, they had a small but great used-synth-pop / new wave section with many shelves of soul sitting next to them. That lead me to their hip-hop / rap bins and $1.00 records, where was never a shortage of obtainable low-cost 12” singles. I found plenty of golden-era scores from Kool Moe Dee, 3rd Bass’ Prime Minister Pete Nice & Daddy Rich, and Spoonie Gee’s Godfather Of Rap ($5.00). A few flips later and I find Original Concept’s Straight From The Basement Of Cooley High for only $1.00. Featuring Yo! MTV Raps’ T-Money and Dr. Dre, it was an essential piece of Long Island history I had to take. I was floored in finding Antexx’ “Understand Me Vanessa (Vanessa Yo)”, a single I remember hearing once on WBLS during my Brentwood era and which absolutely no one talks about. But for $5.00 for four different versions of the same song, did I really need it? Nah. Give Academy more points for having some real old-school artifacts such as some Z-3 MC’s and T.A.P. records.
I still had a thirst for used 7” records so I had to sift through their four-by-four formation right next to the counter; where marked boxes of punk, rock, soul, reggae, oldies, and even French lyricists were fair game. I took some singles from my Atari childhood (read, Eighties hits) and bought some gambles in punk and d-beat. Get this: the Vagra 2016 demo LP that I bought blindly from Academy’s Discogs mail-order? They had their Refuse 7” e.p. in-store. How funny life fucks with you like that. And without even looking for it: Shizuo’s “Sweat” b/w “Stop It”. It’s one of the very few DHR releases I don’t have since I already had those songs. Well, for old time’s sake…
Then I strayed off the beaten path to find another marked box of punk rock and d-beat 45’s under the bins where I scored some self-titled platters in Soaker (because Wharf Cat), the super-CMYK saturated Strutter, and Glam. That one was my first-ever find from the La Vida Es Un Mus label and I am all the happy for it.
I sifted through more LPs both new and used in all categories. That’s where I scored even more major wins. The Men’s Devil Music, one of the few not released on the Sacred Bones label, was mine. Speaking of fantastic New York City labels, there was Institute’s Readjusting The Locks on clear / bourbon swirl vinyl. Why not? And I had to take the biggest hit for one of my favorite artists: an unwrapped copy of Boy Harsher’s Country Girl (Uncut) for $18.00. I won’t complain.
Academy had plenty of used LPs in other categories. They had a section devoted exclusively to the Numero Group. A little to the right was more classic rock LP’s and even further were their Detroit techno, electronic and jungle / drum-and-bass sections. I had a laugh when I found a copy of Give Up’s self-titled e.p. on the Ambush label; the second Shizuo-based release I came across. I do have it in my library since I bought it from The Port Jefferson Music Den during DHR’s heyday.
CD’s? They barely carried any. They had only two columns of it tucked away deep in a corner before their tape section, and that they didn’t disappoint. Though they carried the usual universal duds, they did have some exciting finds in punk and golden-era hip-hop. It was the first time in ages that I bought a cassingle. That was Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz’ “Deja Vu”. In fact, they did have a few dusty cases of them where they were five for a dollar. For $7.00, Who’s The Man (motion picture soundtrack) was a must-grab.
But the real good stuff was kept behind the counter in a glass case. The girl dressed in black denims noticed I was eye-ing them. Of course I was. There were a few that caught my eye. One which was Ata Kak’s Obaa Sima; a personal Summer jam and the very album that kicked off the Awesome Tapes From Africa label. I asked her to get me the price on that, Subhumans UK’s 29:29 Vision, and Health’s Disco4::Part I.
“That’s fifteen, fifteen, and that’s thirty.”
I really wanted Ata Kak so I took it, but passed up on the Subhumans UK tape. And as much as I like Heath, I sure as fuck on a rainbow-winged pegasus on a golden horn won’t pay $30.00 for a blue cassette. To be fair, Academy had a case: Discogs’ sellers priced it at $35.00. Put that back.
She added up my purchase. It was a great $177.00 and two-and-a-half memorable hours spent in the city. I walked out the door and looked across the street to see an empty playground. All the yelling and camaraderie was over for the day. I turned the corner to catch the next ‘L’ and ‘C/E’ line to Penn Station. No rush, no fuss, no danger. I had just enough time to catch the Central Islip train for what would be another hour-and-five-minute ride east home. Do remind me never to board a peak train ever again. For four dollars more, you can play musical chairs competing for cramped seats and be packed like a twist-can of Iberia sardines with almost no leg room.

Living Dangerously - Chapter 31
Jurassic Park’s animal handlers: none of them ever mentioned by name in Michael Crichton’s original novel. Who were they? What were their lives like on Isla Nublar? Did any of them survive the disaster?

Separate Ways - Journey
“Oh my God.” Lizzy’s hand went to her mouth.
“I’m fairly keen to contain the situation.” Muldoon kept his tone matter-of-fact. “You can imagine.”
Ed Regis had finally noticed something was awry and was shooting agitated glances in their direction. Lizzy chose to ignore him. “How did this happen?”
“Esteves managed to let it out.”
”What?!” It couldn’t possibly be true. “Rico knows better than that!”
”My thoughts exactly. Don’t worry, he’ll get the bollocking of his life once I’ve retrieved the blasted animal.” He turned to see her still following him. “What the Hell do you think you’re doing?”
“Uh, I think I’m coming with you!” Lizzy made to push past him so she could beat Regis to the door. “That’s my blasted animal!”
”Not a chance. Stay inside.” He blocked her escape. “You certainly aren’t going anywhere dressed like that.”
“Oh, really? Well, you clearly know best. I’m sure I’ll be just fine, left alone with all these strange, lonely men.” She deliberately adjusted the neckline of her dress. “Uh-huh, perfectly safe.”
Silence. Lizzy could practically see the cogs turning.
“I’ve changed my mind.” He decided. “Keep up, Armstrong.”
***
“Seriously, boss?” Tom despaired. “She can’t even walk in that monstrosity, never mind run if something chases her!”
“Let me just go change!” Lizzy chewed him out. “Oh, wait. We don’t have time!”
Her hair was already doing its damnedest to escape the updo Kathy had painstakingly donated her entire collection of bobby pins towards. Stray curls were popping free all over her head. Tom tossed Lizzy his bone-handled folding knife that he’d kept tucked down the side of one of his leather boots. “At least sort your dress out, would ya? You’re gonna hold us up.”
He had a point.
She fumbled, only just managing not to drop the blade in the dark, and began hacking away at the hem.
“Sorry, Ed…” The cheap material began to rip nicely, and then stopped after a few millimetres. She was no better off.
“Christ’s…sake…” Lizzy struggled, grunting. What the Hell was it made from? Her palms were sweating and she couldn’t get any purchase on the material, infuriatingly it kept slipping straight through her fingers.
“Leave it.” Muldoon took pity on her, bending down.
“But-“
“Don’t read into this too much.” He told her as he took hold of her dress and tore it from mid-thigh to hip as easily as if it were made of paper.
“Steady on.” Lizzy’s heart about near stopped.
“Just get in the Jeep.”
”Right!” Lizzy hurriedly tore off her heels and flung them in the back of the vehicle, wincing as the gravel dug into her soles. It was a welcome relief, far less painful than the shoes.
“Was that good for you, Liz?” Tom muttered as Muldoon slammed his door shut. “Quick work.”
”Enough, Kennedy.”
Lizzy smacked the back of his headrest in retaliation. “Oops.”
“Hey! Watch it!” Tom protectively reached upwards.
”They even make cowboy hats large enough for your big big head?” She couldn’t resist giving him back just as hard. “Or is that a custom?”
”Stetson. Stetson. How many times?” Tom clearly took serious offence. “It’s a goddamn stetson!”
***
They were following the raptor on her journey across the island, Arnold giving directions over the comm link, trying to stay parallel to her trail using the roads. They’d been driving for a while, but were drawing ever closer as the animal tired.
The air was getting heavier, no stars to be seen that night, obscured by the black thunderclouds closing in on Isla Nublar.
Lizzy was fully invested in the raptor hunt, keeping an eye on the road ahead from the safety of the Jeep, but her mind was unhelpfully wandering to other matters.
Against what Muldoon had warned her about, she was reading into the dress-ripping situation, heavily.
She couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Her longing wasn’t helped by the man in question shooting her glances in the rearview mirror now and again. Like he knew exactly what was rumbling around in her head.
“Bring your glasses?” Muldoon finally spoke.
”I refer you to my earlier answer, when you asked about my radio.” Lizzy reminded him. “If you can’t see it, then I don’t have it.”
“Just as well, I only brought two guns.”
“Boys hunting trip, then.”
In fact, looking at the pair of them in the front seats, it could almost be father and son setting out into the woods for a game shoot.
Lizzy nearly opened her mouth to taunt Tom about it, but thought better. She wasn’t that much of a dick, to bring up what was likely a very sore subject for him. Hell, she was one to talk, she had enough family issues of her own.
“She’s stopped.” Arnold announced to the Jeep. “Fifty feet to the south-east.”
“Radio silence then, please. Over and out.” Muldoon confirmed, putting the car in neutral and turning the ignition off. “Don’t suppose you have a plan?” Tom drawled. “Or are we free-styling this, as per usual?”
“She goes to a marker now.” Lizzy interjected. “I’ll have to get close, but let me try.”
”She does what?!” Lizzy heard Tom mutter incredulously.
“Get close?” Muldoon wasn’t sure if he’d heard her correctly. “I don’t bloody well think so. That’s Sarah Harding levels of stupidity!” Fair enough, if Armstrong could make the raptor behave when there was a fence separating her from danger, and the dinosaur from a possible meal. But her bold proposal confirmed what Muldoon had suspected for a while.
Unless she’d made unbelievable progress in a few short weeks, the ethologist had been coming to study the raptor without him.
“Just-“
“I’m not having you do that.” He thought of the grisly photograph he’d seen of the Ruso woman’s mangled fingers. And the animal was much, much bigger now.
”Uh, guys-“ Tom tried to get their attention. “It’ll work!” Lizzy persisted.
“Still no, Ar-“
”Guys!”
“What?!” Muldoon and Lizzy replied at the same time.
”There.” Tom pointed in a whisper-yell. “Shit, she’s right there.”
Lizzy squinted, then sure enough, she saw the eyes.
All three of them got out of the vehicle, Lizzy silently passing the men the tranquilliser guns that had been propped up beside her on the back seat.
The ethologist couldn’t help herself, she was drawn in. She edged closer, marvelling at the way the dinosaur just disappeared amongst the vegetation. Seeing her without an electric fence in the way or other obstacles in the way, she was stunning. The ideal predator. As Lizzy watched, the raptor’s nostrils flared and she snorted sharply, catching a scent on the wind.
Her head jerked around, with a few irritable snaps of her jaws. Her third eyelid slipped across and then back again in a white film. Then the raptor fixed her stare on Lizzy, and the young dinosaur’s entire body stiffened.
All three humans heard a faint sound, it took Muldoon a moment to realise it was a low but constant snarl, coming from the raptor. It invoked memories of Africa deep in his bones, it sounded remarkably similar to the noise that came from the undergrowth when a big cat decided it had an issue with his limbs being firmly attached to his body, and was going to do something to rectify that.
He had no idea why the raptor had suddenly taken issue with her handler, but a more pressing issue was that Armstrong had nothing to defend herself with.
“Get in the car, now.” Muldoon pushed the ethologist behind him, blocking Lizzy from the raptor’s penetrating gaze. “Slowly.”
Thankful for her bare feet, she obeyed. She slipped like a shadow, shifting her body in reverse behind the door, then back into her seat with barely a sound. Lizzy left the door ajar. Impossible to shut it quietly.
The raptor had hunkered down in the bushes. Waiting for the humans to move first. Daring them.
Just try it. See what happens.
No such thing as a clear shot anymore.
“Damn, if she bolts, we’re back to square one.” Muldoon muttered only just loud enough for Lizzy to hear, the pair of reptilian eyes reflecting amber back at them from the darkness.
“She wants to get to me. You square up to her, draw her attention, then Tom takes the shot from the side.” Lizzy suggested.
“I know what I’m doing.”
“Broadside is a bigger target.” She pressed. “Front on, she’s too narrow. And Tom can’t cover you at close range, the Jeep’s in the way.”
“I won’t miss.” Muldoon’s words were clipped, he wasn’t happy with her plan.
“Listen, the three of us have zero experience stalking this animal.” Lizzy pointed out. “Even you. We haven’t seen her hunt in the wild, I don’t have a gun to cover you. So let’s cut down the error margins.”
“Suppose.” He reluctantly agreed. “Kennedy-“
”I got it. Flanking now. Keep her engaged.”
The Texan simply disappeared, his tall form melting into the darkness without a sound, and the two of them just had to assume he was carrying out the plan as agreed.
The raptor stood like a statue, still rumbling viciously. Then she fell silent, and that was somehow more chilling. The eye of the storm. Her head cocked to one side.
Lizzy realised the velociraptor could likely hear Tom’s footsteps, even if they couldn’t. The wind caught her hair and she realised they were upwind, shit- He could be in real danger.
“Close your door.” Muldoon clearly had the same thought.
Lizzy blinked, unsure she’d heard right. ”It’ll make a noise.”
“That’s the idea.” He didn’t take his eyes off the raptor. “Draw the bugger out.”
“If you’re sure.” Her stomach flipped from the thought of the dinosaur rushing at him.
”Do it.”
Okay, you asked for it.
Lizzy slammed her door shut and the raptor snarled at the disturbance, getting more agitated as she took a few steps forward, unsure now her attention was split two ways.
Muldoon snarled back. ”Come on. Face me, you devil.”
Lizzy could practically see the crosshairs zeroing in on the side of her body, unobstructed by branches.
Now, Tom.
The raptor’s shining eyes dropped low to the ground and she was hunkering down to charge-
Take the shot take the shot taketheshot-
Her breath quickened at the incoming attack, then the pop to her side as Tom’s gun went off made Lizzy jump.
The dinosaur screamed and turned away into the undergrowth, racing off with barely a rustle.
“Stay there, Armstrong.” Muldoon was already striding forward to check.
”Honestly.”
”Do I need to lock the damn door?”
No she murmured grudgingly.
There was a muffled thump from outside the bright pool of the Jeep headlights. The raptor was down.
Tom materialised out of the darkness, grinning happily. “I got her behind the ear.”
”Good lad.” The park warden clapped him on the shoulder as they went to find where the raptor had fallen. “Risky shot.”
“My favourite kind.”
“Show-off.” Muldoon nudged the dinosaur with his boot, then finally lowered his gun, calling to Lizzy, still in the Jeep. “Suppose you want to give it a once over?”
“Yes!” Lizzy was practically hanging out of the window with desperation.
“Get out here, then.”
The ethologist piled out of the car and ran over to examine her animal. Muldoon should have been ordering the raptor loaded into the back of the Jeep as soon as possible. But he knew what she wanted. Lizzy appreciated being given a even few moments with the most intriguing creature she’d ever had the pleasure of studying.
She checked the raptor‘s pulse with two fingers under the jaw, watching her sternum rise and fall, marvelling at the animal she admired from afar but was never allowed to touch. She squinted and ran her palm over the crest of the dinosaurs neck. Were those pinfeathers coming through?
“Oh, rad.” She murmured, tempted to pull one out to show Henry Wu over breakfast the next day, but she resisted.
“We’ve discussed how clever these ones are.” Muldoon stated, standing over her.
“Many times.”
“Hm.” He nodded. ”I wouldn’t be surprised if it remembers all that.”
***
“That worked out rather nicely.” Lizzy was relieved. Situation contained.
“Could have gone worse.” Muldoon agreed, pausing. “But we need to have a word, about you coming to visit it without me.”
”Oh, someone’s in trouble…” Tom whispered gleefully.
Lizzy looked extremely guilty, but didn’t have an answer. At least, not a convincing one.
“I should have known.” Muldoon continued, trying to sound more annoyed than he felt. At this point, he wasn’t even fazed anymore. “Always forging ahead.”
“Sorry, I just-“ Lizzy ducked her head, knowing there was no point. “-I really want to give her the best chance possible. I truly believe she can be managed.”
”Well, that’s alright then.” The sarcasm was laid on thick.
”The breakout wasn’t her fault.”
“Not this time.” It was the same story with every zoo in the world, and there were always repeat offenders. The odd animal that just seemed naturally disposed to break everything. “That won’t be the last.”
Silence hung heavy in the cab of the Jeep.
“You’ve been training the raptor?” Tom asked dubiously. Was Lizzy imagining it or did he sound almost impressed?
She groaned out loud. She knew she couldn’t exactly count on the Lone Ranger to be discrete.
“I suppose it’s not the best-kept secret ever.” She grudgingly admitted. “But, yes, we-…well, I have.”
Tom started roaring with laughter. “You got a death wish, lady?! That’s insane!”
“Tell me about it.” Muldoon agreed.
“You let her do this shit?” Tom incredulously asked.
”She does what she bloody well pleases.”
”He doesn’t let me do anything!” Lizzy rolled her eyes. “You don’t own me, Muldoon.”
He glanced back at her again in the mirror. This time Lizzy was ready for him, she was chewing on her knuckle as she stared out of the window, and let slip a full-on grin.
And whose fault is that?
She could see the smile in his eyes, even in the letterbox sized rectangle of glass.
Tom was oblivious.
“I’ve heard some crazy stories on this island, but man…you gotta show me that! Sit, stay, lie down!” He started guffawing again.
“Alright, it’s not that funny.” Lizzy said moodily, quickly tiring of being laughed at.
“Play- play dead-“ Tom abruptly stopped laughing and sat up straight. “Oh my God, is that what she’s doing right now?”
He hurriedly turned around in his seat to check the raptor was still sound asleep in the back.
”I like to keep her brain busy, she’s all by herself.” Lizzy explained. “It’s gonna pay off someday…though apparently not today-“
“We are not doing a test run when it’s already up here with stress.” Muldoon tapped the roof of the Jeep. “If you’re going to do that, get your affairs in order first.”
“She’s always stressed, what difference does it make?” Lizzy countered. “Being free range for an hour probably did her a world of good.”
Muldoon scoffed. “Well, I’m certainly glad you’re just as concerned about my stress levels.”
***
“I’m going to walk the fence. Check for damage.” Muldoon nodded at the dinosaur in the back of the Jeep. “You two deal with that.” “Hurry up and help me, Liz.” Tom was already sliding the raptor forward. “Before she wakes up for real.”
“Jesus, she’s big now.” Lizzy’s voice was strained as she lifted. “And solid.”
“Come on then, Miss Raptor Expert.” Tom huffed as they carried the dinosaur with awkward, shuffling steps. “She could have attacked us at any point, why didn’t she? She rushed me, I’da been screwed.”
”She knew she was outnumbered.” Lizzy said simply. “She didn’t have back-up.”
“They ain’t stupid, then?”
“Not at all.” She grunted, adjusting her grip.
”Which begs the question-“ Tom “What happens when she gets the friends they’re so desperately trying to breed?”
Lizzy fell silent. “Better hope these fences are up to spec, that’s all I’m gonna say.” Tom muttered under his breath.
The gate was still wide open. It was unsettling, difficult not to imagine an animal charging out of the darkness and nailing them both where they stood, though the only occupant of the paddock was unconscious right in front of their eyes.
“Hey, Liz. She’s got into something while she was out.” Tom was staring at the raptor’s jaws. “Look.”
”It’s fresh.” Lizzy frowned, her upper lip curling. “Really fresh.”
The blood hadn’t yet clotted. The odd fleck of bright red dripped off and spattered on the ground, leaving a gory trail as they moved the dinosaur back into her enclosure.
”Probably just a rat. Won’t need feeding tomorrow, even with the extra running around.”
”Yes, she will.” Lizzy pointed out something that never ceased to bother her. “Tom, she’s always hungry.”
”Growing still, ain’t she?” He seemed nonplussed. “No big deal.”
”It’s more than that. I know this animal. She would eat until she burst. And then look for more. She’s constantly hunting, it’s like a compulsion.”
”You think they ever starved her, as punishment?” He suggested. “That’s why she’s obsessed with food?”
The thought honestly hadn’t occurred to Lizzy before. “That’s horrible.”
”They do things differently over on Sorna, don’t they?”
Lizzy recalled what Muldoon had told her. The production line. The mortality rate. Thousands of dead. InGen’s legacy built on the blood of infant creatures.
“So I’ve heard.” Lizzy felt fiercely protective towards the raptor. Defensive in the same way that Tom had jumped in when she herself was threatened earlier that evening.
Nobody messes with her but me.
It’s measured in rounds.
“Shit, I can see her eyes moving.” Tom complained. Sure enough, the raptor was letting out faint croaks as she slowly woke. ”Hurry up, dickmunch.”
”Huh, that’s a new one.” Lizzy grunted.
Muldoon had reappeared by then.
“Double and triple check that gate, both of you. Then check it again.”
Tom ironically saluted, rattling the gate hard once he and Lizzy were satisfied it was firmly closed.
“Hop on.” Tom turned around, offering her a piggyback to the Jeep. “Mud’s pretty deep. At least, you’d hope it was mud.”
“What a gentleman.” She hadn’t minded until then, carrying on stoically with no shoes, but her feet were starting to get cold.
”I do have my moments.”
Lizzy winced as she heard the stitching in the dress creak and pop as she clambered on, despite taking a few moments to roll it up over her thighs. She wondered how long she had before it gave up entirely.
“Shit, no-“ Tom realised his stetson was in the process of toppling off, headed straight for the sludge under his feet.
Lizzy deftly caught it before it tumbled further downwards and propped it atop her own head.
”Thanks, Liz.” Tom muttered. “Mom got me that hat.”
”Stetson.”
She heard him rumble in humour against her stomach. “Yeah, right, stetson.”
When they got back to the Jeep the park warden seemed to be in a remarkably upbeat mood. Lizzy reminded herself he considered going out and finding things in the dark to be a good time. She knew from her own experience.
“Am I dropping you two off back at the party?”
“Please, no.” Lizzy couldn’t find her heels in the pool of darkness that was the Jeep bed. She gave up and resigned herself to staying barefoot. “I’m done. Take us home.”
“Don’t you want to give Regis an aneurysm? I’d say this is an improvement.” Muldoon smirked at the state she was in.
Lizzy could imagine what she looked like, covered in mud, make-up smudged. Hair beyond saving.
“Enough leg for you?” She wasn’t in a terrible mood herself.
”Too much for me, in every single sense.” Tom groaned. “I already regret those oysters but I don’t think it’s them making me feel green. Gimme my stetson back.”
“No, I like it.” Lizzy ducked out of his reach.
“Then get your own. You’re gonna bend mine all out of shape with your stupid big hair.” Muldoon just shook his head, knowing it was pointless to intervene, and reached for his radio.
“Baker, we’re done, over.”
“Great job, guys.” Lizzy picked up that Kathy didn’t sound as relieved as she should have been. “Turning in.”
“Uh, Muldoon? We do have another problem, over.”
”What now?” He turned to Lizzy and Tom in disbelief. “I’m knackered.”
“Nobody can find Rico.” Kathy replied. “He’s gone.”
***
“What did you say to him?!” Lizzy was furious, she demanded to know as she stormed through the control room door at Muldoon’s heels. “Tell me!”
“I told him to stay out of the way.” He replied calmly. “Esteves, come in-”
Lizzy snatched the radio straight from his hand, taking over the transmission.
”Rico, it’s me. Please let us know you’re okay. I’ll come find you, if…if you want me to.”
”Over.” Muldoon reminded her.
”…over.” She glared up at him.
The radio crackled in response. “Shhhh!” Lizzy gasped in relief. “Guys, listen up! Rico, is that you?”
The overhead speaker was giving a constant weather report in light of the storm, it sounded like the shipping forecast, Spanish version.
“Rico?” Lizzy strained to hear before swinging around to the rest of the room in anger. “Jesus Christ, somebody turn that thing off!”
Isaac dealt with the overhead while everyone waited, collectively holding their breath. Only barely audible in the silence, the garbled words ”-izzy…help-“ finally came through.
Then nothing but static.
“Rico? Rico! Shit!”
”Folks-“ Arnold looked up from the security monitors, his face ashen. “Someone should call for Harding. I think I’ve found him.”
”Ray?” Kathy began to move around to try and see what had spooked him so badly.
”Nuh-uh, Kit.” The engineer hurriedly covered the screen with his hands. “Trust me honey, don’t look.”
Lizzy turned, searching for Muldoon in the crowd. “We’ve gotta-“
The park warden nodded at her, before turning to Arnold.
”Where?”
***
They found him quickly.
Gerry Harding took one look at Rico and demanded the helicopter pilot make ready to fly to the mainland. The investors, and Hammond, wouldn’t be leaving soon, anyway. The weather conditions were declining by the minute.
The rain was thrashing down, it looked like the pilot might be navigating through a storm, but there was no other choice.
Lizzy had ridden in the back of the Jeep to the site of the accident with Harding, tight-lipped and silent, clutching his equipment bag to his chest. Muldoon was driving right on the edge of reason, road conditions worsening by the second.
The manhunt began, following Arnold’s garbled directions, and she had been the one to find Rico, slumped face down, unmoving against a tree-trunk. He’s dead.
That was her first thought. Her breath had hitched, the rest of the world falling away.
No.
She swallowed down the bile pooling in her mouth and forced herself to move closer. She nearly cried in relief when she saw he was breathing shallowly, still clinging to life.
Then she and Harding had turned him over carefully, and the veterinarian had sworn loudly, rocking back on his heels in disbelief and denial when he saw what he was up against.
Lizzy felt like she was detached, watching events unfolding from outside her body. The state of Rico’s front, more outside than in, made her wish he was already dead, that she had never found him. A small, irrational part of her brain wished she had covered him over with a branch and left him, as if he were sleeping.
Anything would have been better than the impossible task ahead of them.
What’s that noise?
Jesus, it’s coming from him…
Sucking chest wound-
It’s flail chest, shit-
Looks like a collapsed lung too-
Internal bleeding-
Where’s the fucking chopper?!
Lizzy reached down, searching for his hands to hold-
His hands.
God, his hands. They’d been sliced to the bone, flesh ragged and chewed at the fingertips. She knew these wounds, she’d seen them before. He’d been slashed at, then grabbed and shaken as he’d tried to keep his arms up to defend himself.
Lizzy glanced up at Muldoon, he caught her eye as he urgently spoke to someone on a second radio channel.
He had considerably more experience with animal attacks, he would know better than her if the kid could possibly make it out alive.
Muldoon paused talking, and gave a her small shake of his head.
Lizzy’s insides froze solid.
“Gerry-“ She’d started sobbing and panting in desperation.
”Pick a God and start praying, Liz.” The veterinarian interrupted grimly. “Because I can’t do this alone.”
“What do you ne-“
”An operating theatre. This is too big a job for out in the field.” Harding spoke quickly. “Talk to him, keep him awake. Do not let him fall back asleep.”
“Okay.” Lizzy replied shakily.
“There’s a good girl.” “Stretcher! Now!” Kathy was yelling orders. She sounded so far away. “Isaac, help guide the chopper down!”
“Mama, mama…” Rico moaned, reaching out for Lizzy’s face, leaving a smear of fresh blood and foamy raptor saliva on her chin. She nearly retched at the rotten stench, directly under her nose.
“Si, si, niño. Esta bien.” Lizzy regained her wits and reassured him in her weak Spanish, trying to find a part of his arms she could gently rub that wasn’t cut and bloodied. She wished she could hold his hands, she so badly wanted to.
Lizzy did her to best to comfort her friend, though she was trembling from a mixture of cold and shock, having to bury her face in her elbow to stop herself heaving from the stench on him. He smelled of death, of rotting flesh. “Cariño, it’s okay, it’s okay….”
Her eyes burned, tears mixing with the rainwater battering the entire team into the ground. The hot earth was turning into a swamp all around them.
“Ready, kid? This is gonna really hurt him.” Harding warned her. “We can’t wait for the pain meds to kick in.”
”More than he’s already hurting?”
”Good point.” The vet agreed as he took a deep breath and continued.
Lizzy had done her fair share of first responding, but didn’t expect Rico to suddenly shoot upright from the pain, so fast he nearly headbutted her, his eyes flying open like a reanimated corpse, before he groaned in agony and flopped back limply on the stretcher.
She looked to Harding for guidance, whose only instruction through gritted teeth was hold him down.
“Shit-“ She whimpered.
“What do we got- woah!” Ed Regis exclaimed, coming to a standstill at the sight of the youngest animal handler torn to shreds. “Jesus, what happened?”
”Get him out of here!” Lizzy commanded without tearing her eyes away from Rico. She wanted to protect him, shield him from Ed’s prying eyes.
She knew now, whose fault this was. And it wasn’t the injured boy lying prone beneath her. Regis made it happen.
“Mama!” Rico screeched, beginning to thrash his limbs where he lay. The colour had rapidly leached from his tanned face, now he was grey and sallow. A disgusting mix of snot, blood and saliva was bubbling up with every laboured breath he took.
”I’m here, I’m here!” Lizzy cried frantically, worried she was hurting him more, regretting she hadn’t tried harder to learn his native Portuguese while she had the chance so she could comfort him better.
Harding was still working as quickly as he could to stabilise the boy. The veterinarian looked harrowed, like he was barely holding back the flood himself as they manoeuvred Rico onto the stretcher.
Lizzy moaned in fear, repeating the same words like a mantra. “…gonna be okay, gonna be okay…I’ll take you to Africa, Rico, I promise, just hang on…”
His eyes were darting around under the lids, like he was lost in a nightmare. His lips were moving. The same words, over and over. She leaned in closer, barely able to hear him over the noise of the rain.
“Velo-ci-raptor…lo-sa-raptor….lo-sa-raptor...”
“Shit, we gotta get him to stop saying that.” Regis had crept closer and was shaking his head, talking partly to himself. “Say it was a construction accident, maybe a backhoe. Yeah, that’ll work…”
“Shut the Hell up, Ed!” Kathy, normally polite even under pressure, was on her last nerve, grappling with the stretcher wobbling dangerously over her shoulder. “Make yourself useful!”
”There’s nothing more I can do.” Harding admitted defeat, slumping backwards. “I don’t have the kit. He needs a doctor.”
”Aren’t you going with him?” It was more of a request than anything. Lizzy hated the thought of Rico abandoned in the cold metal shell of the make-do air ambulance by those who knew him best.
The veterinarian looked through her, without really seeing her, helpless. “Honestly, it won’t make much difference now.”
Lizzy decided in a split second. “Then I’m going with him.”
”But Lizzy, you’re scared of flying-“ Kathy tried to reason, turning to Muldoon. “Stop her!”
Aviophobia forgotten, Lizzy was about to follow her wounded colleague into the helicopter when Regis laid a hand on her arm. She recoiled at his touch.
“I’ll take it from here, Liz.”
“He wants his mother, it’s the least I can do!” She snapped. “I’m going with him.”
“Not looking like that, you’re not. That’s gonna raise some eyebrows.” He cast a scornful eye over her ruined dress.
“Ed-“ Lizzy set her jaw and scowled at him.
“Liz-“ He mocked her. “-it’s my job to handle any dealings with the mainland. They’re gonna want to know how this happened-“
“And you’re going to lie!” She lost her temper and screamed at him.
“I have to!” Regis reached breaking point, roaring back. “You can’t lie for shit, Armstrong, so stay here!”
“There’s gonna be two casualties in a minute if you don’t let me on that damn chopper-“
“Are you threatening me right now, seriously?!” Regis looked past her to the crew standing on the ground, searching for someone to back him up. “Robert, call off your damn dog!”
“Fuck you, Ed.” Lizzy said with as much venom as she could muster.
Rico cried out weakly from his position on the stretcher. ”Lizzy get back here, please!” It was Kathy alone who was begging for her to come back.
“You don’t wanna do this.” Regis reiterated, and then the line that really got to her. “Think of him. You’re wasting precious time.”
Lizzy was still firmly grasping the safety rail of the helicopter. She and Regis, locked in a standoff, glaring at each other as the pilot yelled angrily while the blades sped up again.
For a second Regis believed she might launch herself into the body of the chopper anyway, weight limit be damned.
With a last, haunted look at wounded Rico lying prone and bloody, Lizzy backed off, stumbling away from the helicopter.
Regis slipped on a pair of headphones and spoke into the mouthpiece to the pilot. “We’re set, let’s roll!”
Seconds later, they were already clear of the tree-line.
Lizzy stomped back to the rest of her colleagues, soaked to the skin, hair slicked down flat against her scalp, and got into Muldoon’s Jeep without a word.
She sat, shivering and silent for an untold amount of time, fogging the windows up from how drenched she was while the rest of her team regrouped. The driver’s door clicked open, startling her.
“Here, you’ll catch your bloody death.” Muldoon passed her a blanket, pressing it into her hands before she had even registered it was him.
“T-thank y-you.” Lizzy’s teeth chattered, her knees knocking together as she took it from him, barely managing to cover herself. Still barefoot, her feet up to her mid-calves were caked in mud an inch thick.
“I’m s-so sorry, I’ve m-made a mess of your c-car.” Lizzy smiled maniacally from frayed nerves, focusing on something trivial to mask the pain.
”Wants hosing down, anyway.” Muldoon brushed her concerns off. “As do you.”
The other door clicked and Kathy slid into the back beside Lizzy, reaching over and tucking the blanket in where she hadn’t managed.
”I s-should be in that h-heli-he-h-“ She couldn’t manage. “D-Dammit. Up t-there.” Lizzy could barely hear her own voice over the air-con blasting.
“Lizzy, honey, he didn’t know who you were anymore-“ Kathy gently tried to reassure her.
”T-That’s not the damn p-point.” Lizzy nearly yelled, then checked herself. “It m-matters to me.”
Kathy didn’t know what else to say that would help, she seemed to be only making her friend more emotional.
“You did everything you possibly could, Armstrong, short of performing surgery.” Muldoon spoke up quietly from the driver’s seat. “Above and beyond.”
He seemed to get it right. Lizzy sniffed loudly and rubbed her nose with the back of her hand, quietening down. “I t-tried. I r-really tried to f-follow.”
“I know. But I don’t want you up in that.” he pointed at the helicopter, then gestured out at grey sheets of rain still hammering down. “They’ll be lucky if they make it to Bahía Anasco in this, never mind over the mountains.”
“Son-of-a-bitch.” Lizzy was numb, freezing cold aside from the hot tears now spilling unchecked down her cheeks.
“How far is Bahía Anasco from San José?” Kathy asked quietly.
“About a hundred miles.” Muldoon answered her. “There’s a headwind.”
He was telling them in fewer words it may as well be a thousand miles. Rico was running out of time. The choice was between the fishing village with the small, understaffed clinic, or nothing.
“Gosh, this is awful.” Kathy breathed. “We need to call his folks, don’t we?”
“In the morning.” Muldoon replied sullenly. “After Regis gets back. I’ll see to it that he’s the one to tell them, since he wants to be so involved.”
“No.” Lizzy fiercely insisted. “I’ll do it. I owe him that much.”
Kathy nodded. “Hopefully we’ll have an update of how long he’s gonna be in the hospital. God, I hope he’s gonna be alright, he sounded so scared.”
Muldoon glanced at her sharply. His Team Leader could still be so naïve. To him it was obvious.
As they watched the helicopter ascend into the low clouds and finally disappear from view around the far side of the island, Muldoon wondered if Armstrong was prepared to inform the boy’s family their son had been killed. Or if, like Baker, she still believed he had a hope in Hell.
He already knew. There was no way the boy was coming back from the mainland.
Not alive, at any rate.

Return of the Mermaid
2023’s 3rd Most Memorable Moment
If we had a dose of Vitamin C last January, we had an actual mermaid last December.
By Mermaid, I mean my very close friends, Monica, who immigrated to the US shortly after we graduated high school and has only been here in the Philippines for a vacation every few years—the last time was in 2019, and it was also a contender for my Top 10 Moments list for that year but sadly fell short, giving birth to our #JusticeForMermaids group chat.
Anyway, we had a better plan this year, that’s why it placed really high—and my 2023 wasn’t eventful, to be honest.
We rented an Airbnb rest house in Amadeo, Cavite, but before we headed there, we had lunch at Balay Dako. Some of the food we ordered were their signature paella, lumpiang sariwa, camaron rebosado, ginataang langka, and chicharong bulaklak—Monica had been craving this for days, and tried to order in two different restaurants she had been to recently, but they were sadly unavailable.
After buying some groceries, we then went to our Airbnb. The place was very cozy, it had a small, four-feet deep pool, and we had the entire place to ourselves.
When we’ve already settled, we had a mandatory photoshoot at the side of pool, then we went back inside our room to present our ✨ Life update ✨ presentations, which was Wilma’s idea. I created mine just that morning, right before I readied myself, and I simply copied the stuff from my blog and placed it on a pdf.
Wilma went first, then me. I also introduced to them the guy I was seeing who joined us via Zoom—they were so thrilled to meet him. Marjette, Monica, and Trish followed after me in that order. These presentations went on until 11:00 PM, and we finished one bottle of pink moscato—around 75% was consumed by me, so I was a bit drunk when it was Trish’s turn. And even though I’d love to share all their juicy stories here, they’d kill me if I did.
The following day, we played Cards Agains Humanity, and then went out for a while to buy food for breakfast. Then, we took dip in the pool right after eating.
Upon checking out, we hit the road going to Imus—we were gonna have lunch at Wilma’s house. It was a last minute idea, so her mom just prepared all the food she could get out from the fridge for us. We stayed and rested there for a while, then took a short drive going to Monica’s house for her dinner party.
We brought Wilma’s Tetris Jenga and played for one round, but we never got to finish it ‘coz we were already invited to eat. The moment we returned to our table with our food, the wind blew the jenga tower that we’ve built so far.
Our high school friends, Sarah and Jef, came to the party as well. And we sang karaoke while emptying the three remaining bottles of pink moscato—again, I think I may have drunk 75% of those, meaning I was more wasted then than I was the night before. My most favorite song that we sang that night was Rivermaya’s “You’ll Be Safe Here” because it was such a throwback, and we were harmonizing when we were singing.
You know why I love this memory so much? I woke up the day after feeling a bit depressed ‘coz I just missed being with them. Stuff like this happens only once every few years, and we haven’t even been complete yet—Celine was missing here, Monica wasn’t present back in January.
Maybe we should plan for the next winter solstice, then?

Navarrete (36-1, 30 KOs), from San Juan Zitlaltepec, Mexico, won the WBO junior featherweight crown from Isaac Dogboe in December 2018 and made five defenses of that title in a nine-month span. He out-hustled Ruben Villa to win the vacant WBO featherweight strap in October 2020 and has since defended that title three times. Navarrete is one of the sport’s premier offensive fighters, an aggressor who wings punches from all angles. In his October 2021 title defense over Joet Gonzalez, he threw 979 punches over 12 rounds, including 104 in the 12th round. He returned to the ring in August, rebounding from a slow start to knock out countryman Eduardo Baez with a body shot in the sixth round. The Baez victory marked Navarrete’s 31st consecutive victory dating back to 2012. "This is my opportunity to become a three-division world champion. I am going for that crown,” Navarrete said. “Liam Wilson is a good fighter, but this is my moment, and everyone will see a much more complete 'Vaquero' Navarrete that has a lot of thirst for victory. My ideal weight is 130 pounds, and that will be demonstrated on February 3rd when I become world champion for Mexico and San Juan Zitlaltepec. Wilson will not get in the way of my dream.” Wilson (11-1, 7 KOs), from Caboolture, Australia, is the WBO No. 3 junior contender. He has never fought away from his home country, but he will take the nearly 8,000-mile journey hoping to spring a major upset. Wilson stepped up to fight Navarrete after Oscar Valdez suffered a training injury and enters the fight with momentum on his side. After a stunning fifth-round TKO loss to Filipino contender Joe Noynay in July 2021, Wilson gained revenge in March with a second-round knockout courtesy of his “left hook from hell.” He kept the momentum going in June with a 10-round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Matias Rueda. Wilson said, “He's a champion, a warrior, and a household name around the world, but now it's my time. I'm coming to upset the parade. I've waited my entire life for this moment, and I won't let it slip because it means more to me. I swore an oath to my father on his deathbed that I would one day win a world title for him. I'm looking forward to fulfilling this promise on February 3rd." Barboza (27-0, 10 KOs), from South El Monte, California, is ranked in the top 10 by the WBC and WBO. The longtime contender turned pro in 2013 and has steadily climbed up the rankings with victories over Mike Alvarado, Alex Saucedo, and Antonio Moran. In July, Barboza returned from an 11-month layoff to snatch the ‘0’ from Danielito Zorrilla in a crowd-pleasing 10-round main event. Barboza said, “It’s a big card, and there will be a lot of eyes on us. Pedraza is a formidable opponent. He’s my toughest to date and has only lost to the very best. I'm looking forward to the challenge. At this point, anyone I face is standing in the way of my goal, which is to win a world title. I am going to make a big statement on February 3rd.” Pedraza (29-4-1, 14 KOs) ruled the junior lightweight and lightweight divisions before moving up to the junior welterweight ranks in 2019. He is 3-2-1 as a junior welterweight, having shared the ring with many of the division’s most notable names. In March, he pushed former unified champion Jose Ramirez 12 rounds before dropping a tight unanimous decision. Less than six months later, he battled former lightweight champion Richard Commey to a draw in a fight most observers believe Pedraza did enough to edge out. Pedraza had a Madison Square Garden main event against Teofimo Lopez scheduled for December 10th, but Pedraza withdrew with a non-COVID viral infection. The 33-year-old understands a victory over Barboza moves him closer to a world title opportunity. Pedraza said, "I have recovered completely from the illness that obligated me to pull out of my fight with Teofimo Lopez. Right now, I feel 100 percent, and I know Arnold Barboza Jr. is one of the best fighters in the division. I'm sure this will be a great fight where I will reaffirm my level as an elite fighter at 140 pounds.” Torrez (4-0, 4 KOs), from Tulare, California, captured an Olympic silver medal in Tokyo and turned pro under the Top Rank banner in March. A 6’2, 230-pound southpaw, Torrez has never been extended past the third round in his young career. In October, he shined at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, thrilling the New York City fans with a third-round stoppage over Ahmed Hefny. Undercard bouts — streaming live and exclusively on ESPN+ — include many of Top Rank’s burgeoning young talents. Las Vegas product Andres “Savage” Cortes (18-0, 10 KOs) takes on Puerto Rican knockout puncher Luis Melendez (17-2, 13 KOs) in a crossroads junior lightweight tilt scheduled for 10 rounds. Cortes, a former U.S. amateur standout, notched a near-shutout over Abraham Montoya in his last outing. Middleweight prospect Nico Ali Walsh (7-0, 5 KOs), grandson of “The Greatest,” looks to make it 8-0 against Phoenix-based spoiler Eduardo Ayala (9-2-1, 3 KOs) in a six-rounder. This is the 2023 debut for Ali Walsh, who went 4-0 with three knockouts in 2022. Lightweight sensation Emiliano Fernando Vargas (2-0, 2 KOs), son of former junior middleweight world champion Fernando Vargas, returns in a four-rounder against an opponent to be named. Vargas made his Top Rank debut in November and knocked out Julio Martinez in the second round with a highlight-reel left hook. Sacramento native Xavier Martinez (18-1, 12 KOs) seeks his second straight ‘W’ in a 10-rounder at junior lightweight against an opponent to be named. Junior welterweight Lindolfo Delgado (16-0, 13 KOs), a 2016 Mexican Olympian, steps up against Clarence Booth (21-6, 13 KOs) in an eight-rounder. In August, Delgado authored a career-best victory over then-unbeaten prospect Omar Aguilar. The eight-round shootout ranked among the year’s best action fights.

March 30th:
Justin sits down with Complex and talks about Selena and growing up in the game:
Complex: Obviously, you and Selena are fodder for the gossip blogs everyday. How hard is it to keep your relationship private?
JB: It’s so hard, because everyone’s got a camera-phone, and now everyone wants to get their picture on the blogs. So they’ll send anything that they have to the blogs. So you don’t really get any privacy. If I want to go out to eat, if I’m in L.A., I just have to expect that there’s going to be someone there. That’s the only thing that I don’t like.
Complex: Is it tough for you guys? A lot of people like, hate it. Do you guys hate it, or is it like, “This comes with the territory, we’ve got to deal with it, it sucks?”
JB: I’m kind of both. I don’t like it, but I understand it. I’ll be covering my face or something, and the comment that pisses me off so much is, “Oh, get over it, Justin. You’re famous. People are going to take your picture. Just suck it up. You’re rich. You’re making a lot of money. Suck it up. This is one of the things that you have to do.” I’m like, “Yo I just got off an eight-hour flight. I’m tired. My eyes have bags under them. I’m not trying to take pictures.” I’m not going to come to your house, wake you up out of a deep sleep and start snapping your picture, no matter how you look right now. It doesn’t matter. When I get off a flight, I’m not trying to sit there and let them take pictures of me. I’m tired. I’m scratching my eyes. I just don’t like taking pictures in general.
Complex: There’s been high profile couples in history: Justin and Britney, Jay and Beyoncé. Jay and Beyoncé kind of kept it private. Everyone knew they were together, but they kept it quiet. Even with the kid, they kept it so under wraps. Do you learn anything from those relationships? And do you guys talk about that?
JB: Yeah. I mean, for me, it’s like, there’s no way to hide it completely, because then it would be unfair for us. Then, we’re not even able to have a relationship. It’s like, “You take this car, and I’ll take this car, and then we’ll meet up at the spot. Then, you go in this door, I’ll go in this door. We’ll end up crossing ways. You get back in this car. We’ll cross over, do a James Bond. You go through the kitchen. I’ll go through the back area. Then we’ll meet in the dressing room and see each other.” At that point, it’s like, it’s not even a relationship. You’re just hiding from everyone. That’s unfair and unhealthy, man.

Asked about the Kiss Cam, Selena called it "the most humiliating thing that’s ever happened to me, probably."
“They were showing these little elderly couples, and it was so cute. Then all of a sudden we’re both looking up and we come on the screen and it’s like … it was so awkward. It was so weird. I mean you have to kiss, right?”
"They wrote a song together and it’s beautiful - it’s amazing - I don’t know if it will make the album, but if not I’m sure they’ll release it at some point, because it’s a really great record. It’s kind of like … it’s Taylor and Justin combined. So it’s a little bit of an upbeat song, but it’s very acoustic.”

UsWeekly releases a special edition of their magazine featuring Justin and exclusive photos/interviews titled Inside My World: Justin Bieber. He's questioned about Selena during his interview and mentions recently gifting her a diamond bracelet:
UsWeekly: At least you get quality time with Selena. What do you love about her?
Justin: I dunno! She just carries herself in a very elegant way. And my family loves her, which is usually hard because my mom’s really picky. My mom wants, you know, a good Christian girl with good manners.
UsWeekly: Do you understand girls better now?
Justin: Well, every girl is different, so they are hard to figure out. Like, the way most men work is the same. But each woman works differently. It’s like I can’t figure them out! But I do know girls like you to tell them you love them and that they’re all beautiful all the time. So I do that a lot with any girl I’m with. I tell them that as much as possible.
UsWeekly: Most romantic gift you’ve ever given?
Justin: I’m not saying to who- but I gave a girl an expensive diamond bracelet recently. It was so pretty, I knew she’d love it!
UsWeekly: Would you and Selena ever do a duet?Yeah. I think she’s very talented.
Justin: That would be very cool. We have nothing planned- but I’m not opposed to it!

May 27th:
Selena and Justin were strolling an outdoor mall in Calabasas when paparazzi began harassing them as they were trying to leave. According to witnesses (and photos taken) this photographer was so aggressive that he even blocked Justin's car, and was said to be rudely harassing Selena "about the herpes (coldsore) on her lip" while trying to capture a photo of her. After they began harassing Selena, Justin got out of his car and went to smack the camera from his hands and him and the photographer both fell off the curb.
The photographer was taken away by ambulance AND filed a police report that named Justin as the culprit. The Los Angles County Sheriff's office is investigating and say they will talk to Justin.
One of the girls who supposedly was there shared this:
"long story short; the paps were blocking his car and wouldnt move, he got mad after asking them to move, justin tried to knock their camera, the pap and justin both fell off the curb, he lost his shoe and hat while fighting him, selena and justin left and came back because selena lost her phone, and the paps would not get out of her face, and then they left and now the paps are trying to get money from the whole thing"
Another girl that was allegedly there as a witness had nearly the exact same story as above, except in addition she added the paparazzi were rudely asking Selena "about the herpes on her lip," and that's when and why Justin knocked his camera.

Detectives want to interview Justin and Selena after a photographer claims he was attacked by Justin at a Calabasas shopping mall Sunday, but authorities continue to seek additional witnesses.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Sheriff's Department said the investigation was continuing and that detectives "are planning to interview Mr. Bieber." Law enforcement sources said Selena is among the witnesses detectives would like to talk to. Detectives are investigating claims by the photographer that Justin struck him after he snapped photographs of Selena at the Commons at Calabasas Shopping Center.
The photographer complained of pain and was taken by the Los Angeles County Fire Department to a hospital, where he was treated and released, officials said. The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing, stressed that the probe was in its early stages.

Justin officially releases his third studio album Believe and many of the album's songs are inspired by Selena and their relationship, including Be Alright, a song about their long distance relationship, that Justin wrote by himself:
Across the ocean, across the sea
Startin' to forget the way you look at me now
Over the mountains, across the sky
Need to see your face and need to look in your eyes
Through the storm and, through the clouds
Bumps on the road and upside down now
I know it's hard baby, to sleep at night
Don't you worry
Selena is referenced by name in the song Beauty & A Beat during Nicki Minaj's rap:

June 28th:
Justin cut short a pre-taped interview with U.S. radio show Mojo in the Morning after the host compared him to Justin Timberlake and quizzed him about a potential romance between his mother and One Direction's Harry Styles.
Thomas Carballo, the host of the show, was in the middle of a phone chat with Justin when he (rightfully so) took offence at his line of questioning - and hung up.
The 10-minute interview got off to a bad start when Carballo told Justin he thought he was Timberlake the first time he heard him.
Justin said, "That's funny because our voices sound nothing alike... Saying I sound like somebody else is definitely not a compliment."
Justin eased up when talking about his new song Maria, which was inspired by the woman who falsely claimed he was the father of her baby last year, but he lost his cool when Carballo got personal and asked if he was worried about Harry Styles falling for his mum.
The DJ said, "Do you worry about Harry around your mum, since he likes older women?"
Clearly upset, Justin then mumbled something about Carballo's mother and, as the radio presenter explained his mum was dead, Justin had already hung up the phone.
A record company representative then tried to convince the DJ that Justin's phone had cut off, explaining, "I can't get him. He's in a really s**tty area."
She later revealed Justin was "really upset" with the questions, adding, "He probably won't be calling back."

The "SUN" of MEXICO
Tropical & Sidereal - the SUN edition
* Vedic (Sidereal) vs. Tropical -> use both! as both will reveal a different side of the diamond that makes you...YOU!
*when readying the Tropical chart if there is no different sign underneath, i.e (Sidereal chart) then the sign takes even more power due to how concentrated the energy is!
*Most signs that are in the later degrees of a sign, will usually remain in the same sign in the sidereal chart, except they will be found in the early degrees of that same sign.
-> Ex. 28 degrees Aries sun would be 3-4 degrees, Aries, in Sidereal.
*it's important to keep in mind the degrees (as many wonderful astrologers like @d4rkpluto and others have previously mentioned before) and the house this falls in!
-> Luis Miguel "The SUN of Mexico" born 04/18/1970 (Famous Mexican Singer) has 28 degrees Aries sun (household degree)(conjunct his Saturn) in the 4th House tropical and falls in his 5th house in Sidereal. His father was extremely influential in his personal and career life! (sun 4/5 H) He attained fame and career thanks to his father's aggressive (Aries) and extremely driven actions to push his EXTREMELY young son into the spotlight in the music industry (5H) because he noticed his son's naturally inherited (4H) talent for music (5H), which he got from him, the father! (Sun & Saturn in 4H)
Now his Sidereal sun is @ 4 degrees Aries (again 4H) but this falls in his Tropical 3rd House! which reveals he has 1 younger brother, with whom he felt a slightly heated rivalry (Aries) due to their father's relentless push to both his son's towards singing! (5H)
Astoundingly, it also reveals HOW and WHEN he started his career! He started singing since he was about 6 years old (3H =early school years) and his first appearance (in which he gained his name to be mentioned in every household) WAS in front of a large audience on a LIVE TV show!! (3H) in 1977-8!
Thanks to his father's (sun 4H!) incessant pursuit of pushing and advertising (Sun 3H 4 degree!) his son's talent in Mexican soil! (5H 28 degree). After that initial "debut" his public & private life has been spoken and speculated about (Sun 4H/3H) endlessly by the media (3H) given how private and reclusive (4H) he has become over the years! The one aspect that most people had a large enjoyment (5H) during his younger adult years, was in gossiping about (3H) his L0VE/DATING life! (5H) and the subsequent family/children (4H/5H) he formed with a couple of his flames! Now that he is older, he rarely gives interviews or speaks to the media (3H) yet his talent and PASSION (5H) during his performances (5H) has become more WIDELY known thanks to the internet! (3h) and to the multitude of YouTubers (across the globe!) doing music (5h) reactions (3h) of him (Sun)! as well as his televised (3H) autobiography (sun) about his beginnings/roots (Sun 4H), his rise to fame/legacy (Sun 28 degrees), the relentless and strict discipline his father imposed upon him (sun/Saturn) to make him the best there is in the music industry (5H), the sacrifices he had to make and how that shaped him into the relentless and strict (yet classy!) professional that he is known today!
Fun facts about him include:
He sang for Frank Sinatra on his birthday! got recognized by him as an amazingly talented singer and many either compare them or get linked together!
He dated Mariah Carey during the '90s! and MANY other beautiful women, one of which is Sofia Vergara and Deisy Fuentes!
He is called "the SUN of Mexico" despite him being born in Puerto Rico! (the de-facto country of many talented groundbreaking musicians!---more on that later!) and Mexico has become his adopted home country since childhood! and in which he spends 90% of his time when he is not on tour!.
Now I need a Tequila, my throat has become parched! but then again...HE could make ANY woman THIRSTY!

Chapter 21 | Chapter 23
How’m I Gonna Sleep - Tim Finn
“You’re joking.” Lizzy objected flatly.
”Do I sound like I’m joking?” Muldoon didn't back down.
She shook her head in bewilderment, face like a smacked arse. “Why?”
“Your skills are required. I can’t say any more just yet.”
”I thought you were on my side.”
”And you have a job to do. You’re going. Pack your bags.”
Lizzy didn’t say another word. She turned around and walked straight out of his office before she told him exactly where he could shove that idea. What the Hell was happening?
Richardson might be the one to pull a fast one on her like this, but Muldoon?
She felt betrayed more than anything. She'd thought they were friends. He didn’t even ask her if she’d consider it. Just told her.
Pack your bags.
What exactly had she done wrong?
***
Tom was outside, in front of the still-incomplete visitor centre, doing shirtless pull-ups off a tree branch, all while smoking a cigarette.
“…Seven…c’mon, come to Daddy…eight…Hey, Liz!” He stopped and dangled, sweat dripping off him, when he saw her heading his way. “Betcha can’t do more than three of these!”
No answer. Huh, that was weird. She’d normally leap at the chance to prove him wrong.
”Where ya goin’, lady?”
She kept her head ducked, hurrying along. Tom didn't like that at all. He dropped down from the branch and picked up his shirt, mopping his brow.
“Liz! Talk to me."
Still nothing.
Tom frowned and stubbed his cigarette out, pulling his shirt back on before sprinting after her.
***
“Armstrong, come in Armstrong, over.” Arnold sounded supremely fed up as he tried to reach her. Kathy and Rico were beside him, tracking the weather systems for the next few days and working out how their dinosaur care plans might be affected.
"She isn't in the park." Kathy called to him. "She went to Muldoon's."
"Then why the Hell is she not answering, huh?! Somethin's goin' on, I'm tellin ya!" Arnold threw his radio down and spoke into his phone instead. "No, no, nothing's wrong, buddy. It's a big island, that's all."
Tom's voice drawled over the radio. "Dr Armstrong isn't feeling well, can I take a message?"
"She with you, Kennedy?" Arnold asked grumpily.
There was a break as Tom clearly consulted with someone off-air. "...who wants to know?"
"Her New York man's on the phone. It's important, apparently. Needs to get her butt down here, now. Over and out." Arnold clicked off and yelled to Kathy again. "I told you this tie was a mistake, Kitty-Kat! I am not a messenger boy!"
***
An important call from Simon. Something awful must have happened. He'd only rang her yesterday, when he'd agreed to visit.
Lizzy wasn't sure she could take any more bad news so close together. Sorry she whispered to Ray as she hurried in, he was glaring at her furiously.
“I'm here. Who died?" She asked abruptly as she took the phone.
“Huh? Nobody died, Liz! I just have some good news. Some really great news, in fact. Gonna make your whole month, babe. Couldn't wait until I saw you in person."
“Out with it then!" Maybe a little snappy, she realised.
“Uh, okay, well since I was promoted to partner at the law firm, my folks gave me a bit of money. Rather a lot of money, actually, and Liz-“ Simon paused for effect. “-we’re getting married in a year. A year next Tuesday to be exact. I did it. I booked the Plaza.”
“Oh.” Lizzy didn’t know what to say. “I, uh-…” She should be excited. But dread was rapidly filling her from the toes of her boots upwards.
Kathy, Rico and Ray had stopped conversing and were quietly watching her, sensing something was wrong.
“And my mom’s picked out a dress for you. Isn’t that great?”
What?
She fumbled for whoever’s hand was closest and grabbed it before sinking down in a chair.
“Hermana?” Rico was immediately concerned. “Lizzy?”
Suddenly she was struggling to take a breath. Her chest felt like she was being crushed inwards by a boa constrictor. Kathy stared at her hard for a moment before scurrying off to source a glass of water.
”Liz? Isn’t that great?” Simon repeated.
She didn't really hear him. She was back in Africa. Standing in the pink dawn glow, looking out to the horizon, listening to the waking calls of animals and birds echoing across the plains.
New York was crowded, and cold, and a different kind of noise. The grey kind.
Then she thought of Costa Rica, her new home. African animals replaced by dinosaurs bellowing through the hills. Her job, the job of a lifetime. The countless doors that had opened for her and her research because she was working at Jurassic Park. Simon had never understood why she just couldn’t stop, couldn't give it up, and he would never try to.
It was all so very clear now. Whether he visited or not, they just weren't going to work. They had both changed, no longer two kids in New York City, too different now.
“Uh, hello? Liz? Say something, please.” Now Simon sounded worried.
“You should have asked.” She replied quietly.
“Sorry, the line broke up just then. What did you say?”
She suddenly felt unbearably hot. The control room was so stuffy. Her breathing was shallower, she felt like she couldn't breathe out, only in, and that her ribcage might burst from the pressure.
Lizzy had always wanted a family. A real one. Ten years ago, when she first met Simon she had thought that meant a husband and kids. A Volvo and a house you paid a mortgage on. Picket fences. The American Dream. But her friends on Isla Nublar, Jeff back in Africa, that was her family.
Falling into fits of laughter with Kathy when they tried and failed to toast marshmallows on the stovetop without setting off the fire alarm. Gerry making her coffee just right. Ray's sarcastic comments that always made her laugh no matter her mood. That was home. And Simon wasn't going to ever be part of it.
She couldn't, wouldn't get married. She didn't want it, and nobody was listening to her.
“That’s very generous of them-“ She blinked hard to keep the tears in check. “But I told you, tried to tell you, I don’t want a big wedding.”
“Yeah, but this way you don’t need to worry. It’s taken care of. It’s happening.”
It’s happening. He hadn't even asked her. Africa had never seemed further away. And now Isla Nublar was being ripped from her, twice in the same day.
“Babe...aren’t you excited?”
“Simon!” She started to panic. “There isn’t going to be anyone on my side of the room in New York!”
There was a long pause, and she knew she was in trouble.
“Mom said you’d be like this.” He told her flatly. “You’d find a reason to hate it.”
“I thought we were talking about getting married in Africa-“ She tried to pacify him.
“Well, it isn’t always about what you want, Liz!” Simon was clearly upset. “I’ve waited long enough for you. We need to start having kids, before-“
“Before what?”
“Before you’re too old!”
“What did you just say?” Lizzy raised her voice, and for once, Simon didn't back down.
“You know what I mean! We’re thirty-four, and well…no offence, but time’s running out.”
“What’s happening?” Tom walked into the control room. "You havin' a team party without me? Nice, real nice." Kathy hushed him.
“I can’t do this.” Lizzy couldn’t believe the words were coming out of her mouth.
“What do you mean?” Simon’s tone became negotiating when he finally realised she was genuinely upset. “Look, if it’s that big of a deal to you we can postpone, again-“
“No, we can’t.”
“It’s fine. Maybe the year after next.”
It wasn’t fine. Nothing was fine.
“No. I can't do this. I don’t want to get married. To you…I don’t want to get married to you.”
“You don’t mean that.”
She didn't deny.
“Lizzy? Tell me you don’t mean it.”
“I can’t-“ Lizzy gulped and crushed the life out of Rico’s hand. “I don’t want to anymore. You and me. I’m so sorry-“
The disconnect tone sounded. He had hung up.
She slowly put the phone down herself, and realised what she’d done. Regret, pain, and most worrying of all, relief, filled her to the brim.
Arnold spoke first. "Baby girl, I'm so sor-"
Lizzy held up a hand. She wanted quiet. Her mind was going off the rails.
"Shit..." Tom wasn't much help.
Kathy pushed the glass of water towards her. "What do you need?"
"Si, hermana. Anything."
Lizzy got up from her chair and took off. She didn’t know where she was going, just that there were too many people staring at her and it was too much for her to stand. She ran out into the park.
***
”Lizzy, hun!” Kathy screamed into the trees. She was getting desperate. It had been hours. The sun was sinking low, Lizzy wouldn’t stay out all night…would she?
Damn, but the island was a lot safer than the middle of the Namibian bush. It was still warm enough to sleep out. Lizzy was sure as Heck stubborn.
But accidents happen. She might have tripped and broken her ankle, and be lying unconscious at the bottom of a valley.
“Where are you, girl?” She whispered. “Don’t do this to me.”
“Want me to round up the guys for a search party?” Isaac asked her. “We could check the motion sensors too?”
“Worth a shot, but she might not be moving. Cameras won’t pick her up.” Kathy groaned.
“Well then, what do we do?”
“We don’t need a search party.” Kathy turned to walk back towards the lodge. “Unless it's a party of one."
***
Kathy made a shooing motion and nodded towards the door. "Go on, get out there. Do what you do best. Go hunt."
"It's a bit more complicated than that. And why wasn't I informed before now?" Muldoon asked gravely. "Have you been making decisions again, Baker?"
"Tom told me what happened. Between you and Lizzy. That she didn't take the idea of moving to Sorna very well." Kathy answered quietly.
"She did not." Massive understatement. Although at least he wasn't the main reason she'd done a runner. In a rather interesting development, Armstrong was no longer engaged. Which meant that his plan for Sorna had gone awry. But Muldoon couldn't worry about that yet. At this moment in time, she was a missing person. His priority was to retrieve her, and quickly.
"Well, she's not back, it's dark and we're out of options. Can you find her or what?" Kathy demanded.
"Almost certainly. She won’t get very far, at least." Muldoon grumbled as he headed to the door.
"Need some help, boss?" Tom offered.
"Hunted more vicious things than her, I'll be fine." Muldoon answered. "Maybe I should take a shock prod though, what do you reckon?"
Kathy just stared at him, open-mouthed. Even Tom looked stunned.
"I was joking." He muttered. "Christ, that bloody woman."
***
Think like Armstrong.
Damn, now that was a scary notion.
At least they were on an island. Even so, thirty square miles was a massive search area. He had to narrow it down.
So, let’s go about this logically. If he knew her, which he did of course, then this disappearing act was her way of saying she needed help. She just didn’t know how to ask, and she hated appearing weak in front of the lads.
Meaning, she wanted someone to come and get her, bring her back. She had to know it would most likely be him, since he was the only person on the island that could track worth a damn, except for Kennedy, perhaps.
So where would Armstrong go, that only he might think of?
Muldoon braked hard and put the Jeep in reverse, going back on himself to take the other turning that led towards the tyrannosaur paddock.
Of course that’s where she is.
He was certain she would be perched on the very same tree she’d riddled with bullets not long ago. A place not obvious to just anyone.
Fortunately, Muldoon wasn’t just anyone.
He chose to kill the ignition and stalk the last few hundred metres. Headlights and engine noise might scare her off, if she thought she was in trouble.
Muldoon was actually enjoying himself. Out in the park alone, at night, was a rare opportunity. Good to know he hadn’t lost his touch. It had been a long while, since he had needed to hunt for…anything, really. And this time, he had no weapon.
Because he was hunting for a wildcat. He found the clearing where the fallen tree was, without much difficulty.
”I know you’re here, Armstrong.”
He hadn’t heard her, yet. Just a feeling. That from somewhere close by, he was being watched. And his feelings, instincts, call it what you will, were very rarely wrong.
“Hurry up and say something, woman, before I trip over you.” No girl this time. He did value his life, somewhat.
If he remembered correctly the tree was off to the left, in the direction of where the tyrannosaur was rumbling around in her paddock.
Muldoon reached for his torch and scanned the ground in front of him.
Ah, there it was. He had been right all along. Boot prints tracked away from him through the mud. Looked about a size seven US. Yes, she was definitely here, definitely wanted someone to come and get her. She knew better than to wear her distinctively small boots in boggy ground if she was trying to hide from him. The prints were partially filled with water, and the surface wobbled every few seconds. Rexy was on the move.
“Over here.” A small Scottish voice finally spoke up. “How’d you know?”
Muldoon pointed the torch in the right direction. Sure enough, hazel eyes were staring back at him in the beam of light.
“Because I know you, daft bugger.” He went to sit down next to her on the tree trunk. “Can’t hide from me.”
They were silent for a few minutes, until his radio hissed, earning a quick grunt from the startled tyrannosaur.
“-uldoon, give me some good news. Can’t see you on the monitor anymore, over.” Arnold complained.
“Found her.”
”Oh! Oh thank God- Is she-“ Kathy started babbling away until Muldoon answered she’s fine curtly and switched his radio off. They could wait.
”I had to leave, it was all a bit much.” Her voice was hoarse. She’d been crying. “Just needed some space.”
“Nobody can hear you scream out here. Except the tyrannosaur.”
”That was kind of the point.” She let her head flop back, staring up at the stars.
“Still a bloody stupid thing to do. Running off like that.”
Away from her problems, yet again.
”You must be fuming.” She stated unhappily.
“Baker’s the one who’ll crucify you when we get back.”
Just glad you’re safe. He thought the words but didn’t say them. “Did you ever pull a stunt like this with Blacklaw?” Distracting her was a good move.
“No, but he grounded me once.”
Muldoon turned his laugh into a cough. The thought of his mate attempting to ground an unrelated woman in her twenties who wasn’t much shorter than him was quite funny.
“What on Earth did you do?”
“I called Sarah Harding a c-, er…the c-word. To her face.” Lizzy grimaced. “Apparently it’s much more offensive in the States.”
“Practically a friendly greeting, back in Glasgow, I’d imagine.”
”That’s what I said!” Lizzy groaned. "Thought she was going to bloody bite me."
"Wouldn't put it past her."
"At least I won't run into her anymore if she comes to visit Gerry, since I’m meant to be packing, I suppose.”
Muldoon shifted uncomfortably. Ah, Sorna. Now he had his wits back about him, maybe he had been too hasty about sending Armstrong away. He’d acted out of spite, hadn’t asked, just told her.
”Don’t worry about Sorna at the moment.” He said eventually. “We’ll talk about it properly in the morning. When we’re both more rational.”
”Really? Do I get some input this time?” That seemed to cheer her up a little.
”You can plead your case.”
She sniffed loudly and nodded.
“Shall I give you a lift back?” It was more of a threat than a question.
There was the faintest scuff of gravel as she planted her feet further apart. Was she really about to give him the runaround?
Oh no, he wasn’t having that.
“Careful. If you think I won’t drag you back inside that Jeep just to get Baker off my case, think again.”
She was silent, the cogs were turning. Trying to figure out if she was faster than him. In the dark. Without her glasses.
Not a chance he thought.
Was she going to bolt? Or just feeling well enough now to wind him up about attempting it?
He liked either choice, to be honest. Both meant she’d forgiven him.
“Don’t do it, Armstrong.” He warned. “Don’t you dare run.”
I’d catch you. And it would make my day.
She turned to him with a tiny smile. “Yeah, okay, you win. Let’s head back.”
***
On the journey back, Lizzy took off her engagement ring. She rolled the Jeep window down, looked out at the jungle, down at the band, debating, then rolled the window back up again, still with the ring in the palm of her hand.
”Say you lost it. Believable enough.” Muldoon offered. He’d seen the state of her bedroom.
”Better not. It was his great-grandma’s. Survived a concentration camp. Makes me a complete arsehole.” Lizzy decided. “I’ll send it back.”
”Shame, that rock would probably put my daughter through university.”
”How is she?” Lizzy was grateful for the change in subject.
”Thoroughly enjoying being the class elephant expert, thanks to you.”
She nodded, pleased. She’d spent ages on that book. Good to know her efforts were appreciated.
Lizzy felt guilty now that Muldoon had gone to all this trouble for her. She would've come back of her own accord, eventually.
She didn't remember running from the control room, or even what direction she went in once she left the building. Only that she somehow reached the tyrannosaur paddock at twilight just as the quartz lights were coming on, all over the park. Her favourite time of day.
It had seemed a good place to stop. Not too far from home, but quiet, where she wouldn't be disturbed. She'd found the fallen tree and sat for a long time as the darkness drew in around the island, listening to the bugs buzzing around and the stegosaurs lowing like cattle as they gathered together for the night.
And then Muldoon had found her. Lizzy surprised herself with how glad she was to hear his voice in the darkness, despite their falling-out.
She was even more relieved, yet surprised he didn’t have Kathy in tow, the renowned over-thinker. Lizzy didn’t want to analyse every detail of her break-up right at that minute. Maybe never.
What did it matter? It was over now.
Muldoon put the Jeep in neutral and idled out of view of the visitor complex for a minute, turning to speak to her. “I can drive you around the other side, if you’d rather. Sneak you in through the garage. You don’t have to face everyone just yet.”
She shook her head. “It’s okay. Can’t avoid them forever.”
He nodded and they moved off again. Kathy was waiting for them on the steps at the sound of the engine in the distance, hopping from one foot to the other, trying to see if there were two people inside the Jeep.
As they drew up Lizzy spoke again.
”Thank you.”
”For what, exactly?”
”Just for knowing."
He had a feeling she didn’t mean how he'd worked out exactly where to find her. Lizzy got out of the Jeep and walked straight into Kathy's arms, holding her tightly in a hug long after the vehicle moved off again.
Muldoon ended up sitting in the parked Jeep by himself for a while, doing some thinking of his own in the garage.
Armstrong was single. It hadn't really sunk in yet.
Since she’d floored Richardson with that technical question within the first hour of her first day, he’d fancied her something terrible. And it was only getting worse the more time they spent together.
Simply put, she was brilliant. And she wasn't the only one who wanted a challenge.
But in a way, this was worse, much worse. Before, she was completely off-limits, for obvious reasons.
Now there was hope, but Muldoon's hopes had been dashed before. He wasn’t sure if he could take much more of it.

Thanks for reading!
The chapter title song is one that Tim Finn wrote just before he and Greta Scacchi split up in 1989. Greta in the 90s is my faceclaim for Lizzy. The song seemed fitting for this one 🖤
And Lizzy and Simon are through. A comfortable relationship isn’t always a happy one, unfortunately.
