World Art Day!!!
It's April 15th, World Art Day! As an artist, I am taking this holiday to celebrate the many, many different forms of art and the sheer variety of mediums available to make art with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's been a while since I've done traditional art. I'll admit that my skills have kind of devolved, but it's a lot of fun anyways. I have an Altoids tin where I keep my watercolors, and I bring it with me when I go birding. When I use it I usually end up painting flowers or leaves because birds move too much, though I've done some decent heron sketches (no idea where I put them).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love Celtic knots so, so much. It is a lot harder than it looks to physically knot a Celtic knot. Also, the design that is stamped (and knitted) is my own design. I am proud of myself for being able to make a unique triquetra of my own. That doesn't mean no one else has made that particular design before, but I have a book with over 60 triquetra examples, and I'm pretty sure my design was not one of them.
Tumblr media
I love sculpting. I'm not that good at it, but 3D art often scratches an itch that 2D doesn't. Strangely enough, I am really heavy handed, which makes it difficult to shape/preserve small details, yet most of my sculptures are small (like this one). In fact, I once made a spinning wheel out of mouse bones (for a sleeping beauty piece of art) and it was only about 2-2.5 inches big. It was so delicate... it might still be intact though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photography is something I got into in 9th grade. Our biology class was supposed to make bug collections (gross) so I asked if my collection could be a photo collection. Being a birder, I continued with photography and got my own camera in my junior year of high school. Photography is one of those art forms that looks like it should be easy, but getting good shots requires effort and an artist's eye, and I didn't realize that until I got into it myself.
Tumblr media
My little brother was in a play recently. He was Michael from Mary Poppins and did so well! I'm not an actor myself, but one of the best high school memories I have is playing violin in the pit orchestra for a high school production of Beauty and the Beast. My brother (different than the actor one) played cello, so he could actually see the stage as he played. He's doing Newsies this year, and I am so jealous.
Speaking of music, here's a piece I wrote a long time ago (because I made a lot of these artworks today and didn't have time to compose anything new).
Anyways, happy World Art Day! I had a lot of fun celebrating and I am so grateful for all of the different forms of art available for us to appreciate!

Dream Animated Movie Musical Tournament Seed Round Group F
For information on this tournament as well as the seed poll for group A go here
Why these musicals should be animated movies (in my opinion)
Once On This Island: it's basically a fairytale (so kinda feels like a Disney musical without really being one) and animation would be the only real way you could capture some of the things this show tries to do on film (just imagine "Mama Will Provide" alone and see the potential here)
The Music Man: classic old-fashioned musicals always seem like they could work well as animated movies to me and The Music Man seems to be one of the most still-beloved from that era (also the closest thing it's had to a movie recently, that 2000s one with Matthew Broderick, is kinda not well liked among fans of the musical so, like Harold Hill, this could deserve a chance at redemption)
Newsies: on the one hand it's a successful Disney musical adaptation of a successful Disney movie so some cynics might say the next step is to make a movie of that musical for even more money, on the other hand due to things like the addition of Katherine the stage musical does feel like enough of a unique entity it could be made into an animated movie without feeling like Disney's doing that kind of recycling (also one of the closest things Disney's ever done to a project with a pro-labor message, we could use that right about now)
City Of Angels: due to the dual-world nature of the story this could either blend live-action and animation (but animation less goofy than what Who Framed Roger Rabbit did) or black-and-white and color animation, either way this would definitely push some boundaries
Venice: although to some the book could use a few touch-ups (but that's what the second look a movie'd give a show like this is for) I still think at its best it's an underrated powerful show that deserves a way to reach a wide audience and as for why animation it'd help provide a layer of distance between some of the content both for soft-hearted viewers when the plot, y'know, Goes There, and for those in positions of power such that they might feel its political content hit dangerously close to home otherwise
Spring Awakening: the messages of this show are timely enough for it to deserve a movie and animation would both help the distance like with Venice and play into the whole dark romanticism of the show's aesthetic otherwise (if I had my druthers over how this would be an animated movie it'd (even if it had to be "drawn" via computer animation and would have to be 3D-animated as long as it could look close to the 2D vibe) do that thing Batman: The Animated Series did with the black backgrounds but have a more "flowy" sort of style like a dark version of certain Disney movies' aesthetic)
Caroline, Or Change: this is another one where it just feels like it'd work better animated but I don't quite know how to say how but this powerful story does deserve to get more notice

Things worth checking out on D+
if you already own a bunch of the stuff they offer or don’t particularly wanna pay Premium Access.
Short Circuit [experimental animated shorts from the upcoming animators at the company, honestly that kind of sold me on getting the service alone]
Pixar Spark-Shorts [experimental animated shorts from Pixar’s workers, dropping in every now and again]
Inside Pixar [Lasseter free], an insight into some of the real workers at Pixar as well as the inner workings of creating their movies]
One Day at Disney [Starring the cast members that weren’t fired!] A documentary plus at least 50 shorts introducing and discussing the real success behind this company - musicians, actors, designers, animators, from all walks it’s a real eye opener [feel free to ignore the Bob Iger one]
Launchpad [ohmygodyoushouldwatchthesewhyhaven’tyou] a batch of original short films showcasing new faces in the industry.
Behind the Attraction [the nuts and bolts of the classic attractions from The Haunted Mansion to Tower of Terror] very interesting for those who love the Disney parks.
Marvel Hero Project [the sharing of real life hero stories]
It’s a Dog’s Life with Bill Farmer [sharing heroic DOG stories with Goofy essentially] unfortunately short lived,
Hamilton, Newsies, Once Upon A Mattress, Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella are just a few musicals available for those wanting an option besides bootlegging.
For the Animation buffs currently airing shows including Amphibia, 101 Dalmatian Street, The Owl House, Milo Murphy’s Law etc. hey, it beats using the Disney Channel solely for them.
Honestly, we should start by encouraging these types of projects, original animation, start ups, behind the scenes, musical recordings, if you’re tired of Disney dumping pretty much everything on their site till you can’t pirate it anymore. try supporting the original content or the 2D animation [especially the ones with legit LGBT rep]

hey!! i’ve been looking through your blog for a while now and i’m completely head-over-heels in love with your art style!! i don’t draw much but i’ve been looking to do it more often, i was wondering if you had any tips for drawing bodies and different postures? thankyou 💖 (also please keep up the wonderful les mis art you do, it’s stunning✨)
Thank you so much! :D <3 I highly encourage you to keep up your drawing. I’ve already probably mentioned these tips in various places but it always bears repeating so! Tips for drawing bodies and poses:
1.  Life drawing!
I talk about this all the time but I promise, that’s where to start getting better at figuring out how to do bodies on your own. The first semester of most art schools always involves a figure drawing course. If your college isn’t offering them, there are groups all over that you can join in (I’ve done Dr. Sketchy’s in three different cities.) Search life drawing (or figure drawing, same thing) in your area. Next week I’m going to a three hour session at my local art museum.
If that doesn’t exist, you can always ask your friends to pose for you for fun, or do observational drawing of people all around you out in public. You do not have to spend money to get into life drawing! And I know it sounds academic, but really, that changed everything for me art-wise when I got into doing that. It teaches you how to draw the figure quicker, more gestural, more expressive when you have to do it on the fly. And with practice it will feel right and natural, and help you get a good grasp on proportions.
2. Reference reference reference!
So life drawing doesn’t automatically teach you everything, and sometimes you do need more help developing a body or a pose. Thankfully you can use pictures to help you do that. You’ve got a wealth of options here too. Most importantly, you have yourself. You can take pictures in the mirror of exactly what you want (if you don’t have someone to help you take the picture like me) or if you’re lucky enough to have a friend or roommate to help you, you can have them do your pose for you. Dress up if you need to, have fun, no one ever needs to see it but you.
Next, you have stock accounts that exist solely for providing to artists. Deviantart has a good amount of galleries that are free for any artist’s use. This is one of my faves here: Senshistock. Here’s one that’s specifically for couples interacting, here’s one that’s for male bodies, etc. (Really though Senshistock is my go-to. You can find so much there. I used it in one of my most recent pieces just to get a hand pose I needed to figure out.)
And then lastly of course, is just finding photography you like and sort of making your own take and changing it up. I save a lot of photos of models and environments and erotica and such that I to try drawing to my likes and another side blog just to keep them around for when my imagination well is dry and I want to refresh myself. Here’s what I have open right now:
Tumblr media
This is a photo from @randinicholejoan. I really enjoy her fashion blog and I think her outfits are amazing so she was a subject I wanted to draw. Notice that, and this is my personal choice, that I did a similar pose, but not the same thing, because I wanted to make my own unique take on it. I still have almost the same view of the outfit and the purse, so I can still draw it very similarly to how it appears, but it’s not a copy of the photo. In, probably most cases, if you’re drawing a fashion blogger or something it’s fine to directly draw the photo, but sometimes photographers who haven’t put up their photos for reference purposes can be be sensitive about recreation of their work, so make sure to credit and check appropriately. While we’re on the subject, I don’t recommend referencing your poses from other artists unless they are explicitly making reference poses for educational use. Many artists (including me) are sensitive about having their work copied and it doesn’t help the person doing it, education wise, to learn to interpret a 3D form into your own 2D linear style, if it’s already done for you. My personal recommendation is referencing photos photos photos! I do all the time and sometimes, as is the case with @randinicholejoan and my past drawings, you can show the model and they’re very happy about it!
3. Thumbnails, silhouette, and line of action
Lastly lets talk about tips about making bodies from imagination. Thumbnail, silhouette, and line of actions are all things you can use to help you make better poses when you’re creating something from imagination. Many many times, I will start out with little thumbnails. Remember that your first drawing does not have to the final drawing! So that’s why it’s good to make little miniatures and figure out how you want the shape of the body to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you start off with something small in your sketchbook, you can better see how the shapes interact. You want everything to be clear. Which brings us to silhouette. Silhouette is a drawing principle for poses that states a dynamic and readable pose is one where a viewer knows how the figure is posed even when it is completely filled in with shadow. Notice that with the case of these Newsies, you would still know what they were doing.
Tumblr media
Now I’m not telling you I chose the best poses ever, but when you’re creating a pose for an illustration checking your silhouette, how negative and positive space play together, can you help you find a good readable pose. You don’t have to always have something make sense in silhouette, but it’s a helpful tool you have at your disposal.
Lastly, you have your line of action, which is honestly something I need to pay attention and work on more. But the idea is that the general line of your pose, usually stemming from the character’s spine, follows a strong singular line or S curve. Finding where it is as you’re deciding on your pose can help you make something stronger.
Tumblr media
Here’s a sample of the S curve:
Tumblr media
(Newsies post found here, Mettaton here.)
So anyway, just make sure you check things out when you’re deciding on your pose that it is clear and fluid. Even me making this now made me realize that most of my gallery could use more line of action so I’m going to work on that. (And please, google line of action and I’m sure you’ll find people who can explain it with better examples than I! This is just some general tips!)
Anyway I hope me writing all this has helped and I hope you have fun working on your poses :)

I don't know what it is about Newsies fans and just ignoring and erasing Katherine just so they can ship Jack and some other male Newsie, but it's gross and yall need to stop, you've got this strong, intelligent woman in the 19th century writing hot news and you just ignore her and even when you don't completely ignore her, you completely disregard her personality and throw her in some meaningless ship with a 2D character who wasn't even in the Broadway musical, it's nasty and I just find it funny that the moment an actual well written strong female character comes along, you lot choose to ignore her, it ain't cute
