Just found my working notes on Dragons Don't Know Paradise. How wonderful to see it now, after more than 2 years, to realise the many many changes that happened while writing,how the plot evolved with the care and help of Jose, @erajmcouts and @olliemaye . To realise how my baby grew inside of me and then out of my womb and into the AO3 webpage. Ah, writing is such a bless. Time for a new drarry fic, I think.

Summary: Draco Malfoy wouldn't go back to England for anything less than an exceptional case. Being asked to figure out why Harry Potter can't control his magic might be exceptional enough to qualify.

Excerpt:

Draco reached for a teaspoon, grasped the edge of the saucer, and leaned back against the sofa, stirring gently and resting an ankle on the opposite knee. “Why, and for what, exactly, are you trying to blame the French?”

“As I suspect you know, there have been hordes of Ministry officials trekking through the house all week. Aurors and Unspeakables, all of them. Millie says the East Wing is off limits, and Prippa has had some fairly alarming news about why that is. I can only hope this whole affair is a case of temporary insanity. Now,” she said, stirring her tea, “that can’t be down to your mother, or you’d have gone mad ages ago. The Unspeakables I’ve overheard talk about your technical abilities with a truly disturbing degree of reverence, so I doubt it’s your work. Process of elimination. It must be the French.”

“That would be the why. Is this accusation of temporary insanity the what?”

Greg shifted, curling his body towards an armrest and looking intently into the middle distance with his chin braced in a palm.

“Draco.” Pansy set her saucer down with enough insistence to rattle the whole set. “Even in your altered state, I can’t imagine it’s escaped your notice that Harry Potter has moved into your ancestral home.”

He paused. “It hasn’t. Though that particular detail was supposed to escape yours.”

Some sweet_s0rr0w trivia: I finished reading this fic one morning back in November 2020, and a few hours later I had the idea for my first ever fic (which became Nor All That Glisters)! I don't think the fics are alike at all, but I suspect I found some things I really admired here - the writing is brilliant (I think the author does dialogue and character interactions especially well - I remember a brilliant Pansy very clearly in this one), the development of trust then tentative friendship then more between Drarry feels very natural, and the feels epic in scope; twisty and clever and fun. Draco's a biomagicologist (brilliant lore here), come reluctantly from his home in France to help Harry with his magic. Also, the flower scene is one of my favourite scenes of all time. Big rec from me to anyone who hasn't read it yet!

𝟏𝟏. tree skirt ; How did you find out about shifting? What was your first dr and what is your main dr now?

I found out through TikTok as many did back in 2020, it was through this video of a girl talking about how she reacted when Draco Malfoy was shirtless in her room. of course I thought what is she talking about and searched trough her other videos where she talked about this spiritual creator that she had learned this stuff from.

Naturally my first DR was Harry Potter or Hogwarts but it didn't feel like there were any options at the time. My main DR now would either be MCU or Fame, I always return back to them no matter how long I've been away or unmotivated.

HP Rec Fest, Day 12

Today’s prompt challenges me once again as I never rarely start fics before they’re completed. By the Grace was the last WIP I followed since the beginning so it’s been a few years, but I’m always willing to make an exception for 25 Days of Drarry and @hprecfest gave me some extra motivation to find another advent fic to follow. This time I don’t have rare pair WIPs to share so I’m reccing two Drarry WIPs, one fairly recent and the other a 2020 fic I’ve been obsessed with ever since day one. Thrilled to be reccing two of my favourite authors here, cannot praise these two gems enough:

Draco is a world-renowned Magi-Diagnostician and Harry is a Cursebreaking Healer, both working in St. Mungo's. They're not-quite-friends, not-quite-lovers, who argue at work and have sex on the weekends. And they're both fine with it, thank you very much. But when a mysterious attack in the hospital leaves Draco trapped in a coma, Harry must do all he can to save him. All the while, an inexplicable, deadly, children's illness is spreading through wizarding London. Oh, and there's some Time Magic thrown into the mix.

just look at that summary! this fic was made for me and after reading the first few paragraphs (such a delightful opening scene!) I knew I’d be breaking my no wip rule and I regret nothing. that, and I also happen to be a slut for work colleagues slash fuck buddies, and Kat delivers in spades as per 😌 this fic is a mix of my fave things like competent Healer!Draco, time travel magic (!!!), case fic, delicious banter between this insufferable Draco and charming Harry. I’m having so much fun and can’t wait to see where this is going!

In the aftermath of an apocalypse, Harry receives an order to find and bring Draco Malfoy nearly a thousand miles, to the tenuous safety of Hogwarts. But more than distance separates them from their goal. The world has fallen, and death is hungry.

I cannot begin to describe how obsessed I am with this wip. even if it never gets finished it will have been so so worth it because this right here is one of the most vivid, creative and impressive world buildings I’ve ever seen. the urgent and dangerous atmosphere is superb and I love love love how Harry and Draco find solace in each other while facing a grim and terrifying inferi apocalypse. brilliant storytelling and delicious slow burn with creative magic, tender romance and heart stopping fight-or-flight sequences. a masterpiece!

Harry Potter Rec Fest Day 10 - Fest Fics

Outside of @etl-echo-audiobooks fests (see Winter Wonderfics 2022 and Draco's Quarter Life Crisis Fest 2023), this is my first year participating in fests, including @hprecfest. I've had so much fun and met some really lovely people. I'm so grateful to this fandom for being so welcoming and constantly coming up with new, fun ideas for fests. And of course to all the participating authors, artists, podficcers, and endlessly patient and hardworking mods for shepherding all these new works out into the universe.

This fic just flies by. The descriptions are so great, I could picture every lacy frill of the lingerie that Harry models. It's hot and sweet and has typically great banter. Thank you @annanother-thing! And an additional thank you to @hd-fan-fair; they've really developed something special. Besides the more than a decade's worth of fics they've collected, they have a competitive reading contest to encourage commenting and reccing during the anonymous posting period. It was so much fun to participate and I encourage everyone to join in next year! And read everything from this year's fest; it's a treasure trove of really interesting and diverse fics.

I was excited when I found this fic, because it's not just one AU, it's a bunch. Harry is traveling through various alternative universes trying to get back to his own. There's one common thread throughout: Severus. This fic is heartbreaking and sad because not all AUs are bad for Harry. When I decided to record this, I hadn't really thought about the number of characters I would need to voice, including some original characters. I think it's worth a listen or a read on the strength of the writing alone.

A book for Rose

"Uncle Harry can we go to the bookshop? Pleaseeee" Rose looked up at him with big eyes.

"Of course my Rosie, lead the way." Harry smiled watching her walk ahead.

The bell jingled as they walked inside. The store was decorated in Christmas decorations and some books formed a Christmas tree.

Rose quickly found the newest book she wanted and together they walked to the desk so she could check it out. However the person behind the desk halted Harry in his movements.

"Malfoy didn't know you worked here."

"Not that it's your business but I'm friends with the owner and help her for the holidays." He answered while scanning  Rose's book before packing it and wishing them a Merry Christmas.

Not having another choice, Harry left the bookshop with Rose. However once home at the end of the day he was already thinking about reasons to return there the next day.

Harry drew to a stop, and turned to him properly, before his eyes darted up and an altogether puckish expression stole over his face. “So, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we seem to have found ourselves in a mistletoe den.”

Draco looked around them and realised that ‘den’ didn’t quite cover it. It was a grotto. They were surrounded on three sides by great bunches of mistletoe, tied with simple twine and hung ready to be sectioned off and sold along with the Christmas trees. It was beautiful, the slender leaves, the milk-white berries; beautiful, if one wasn’t suddenly seized with fluttering panic at the impending moment.

Harry must have seen it in his eyes, and was quick to reassure. “It’s not magic mistletoe, Draco, no worries.”

“Harry, all mistletoe is magical. So we ought to—though I shouldn’t—I had wanted to apologise—” Draco hadn’t stuttered like this since he was shorter than the house-elves, so he clamped his mouth shut and tried to put his thoughts in order before everything spilled out.

It had been a non-sequitur but Harry clearly understood. “Apology accepted—no, don’t interrupt, let me finish—I wasn’t actually angry at you, not at the time, and not since. I was sad, but I understood. So. You’re forgiven.”

Forgiven. Draco knew that ditching Harry when they were eighteen and fumbling their way around feelings that seemed to dwarf even the war was the least of his bad choices, but at the time he had thought he was moving on from his prejudices and steadfast loyalty to tradition. It had cut, seeing the stark shock on Harry’s face, seeing the tremble of wetness on his lashes as they stood waiting to enter the Great Hall and graduate. Draco had done worse things in his life, but crushing that budding connection had felt irredeemable.

“We don’t have to, if you don’t want to,” Harry said. “I don’t really care about mistletoe.”

Draco frowned, he’d never not kissed someone under the mistletoe, even if it was a simple peck on the cheek. One didn’t ignore the winter spirits lightly. But— “Is there someone you—” he broke off, he had wandered into territory too painfully awkward to risk another step.

“No,” Harry said, then looked right at Draco. “Look, I haven’t been waiting for you. I’ve dated, I’ve had relationships that were—they were good, okay?”

“But you’re not—right now?”

“No. And I might not have been waiting, but I’m not going to sit on my arse when something good shows up and pretend I don’t want it. Because I do.”

“You sure about that? It’s not just the mistletoe and general feelings of festive goodwill?”

Harry pinned him with a measured look. “Yeah, I’m sure.”

Draco took a deep breath—the air smelled of pine and snow and Harry’s cologne—and thought of his wish still tucked so carefully in the boughs of his own Christmas tree. He gathered his courage, and repeated Harry’s words; a get-out if he needed it. “We don’t have to, if you don’t want to.”

Harry laughed, but then he was leaning in, and his face filled Draco’s vision. Draco closed his eyes at the proximity, and felt Harry’s breath on his face, and then the brush of lips against his own. It was soft, and chaste, and weighty.

It was Draco’s first kiss from Harry in ten years, and it felt like a beginning.

Summary: Harry's not sure what makes him harder; listening to Draco talk about astronomy, or shagging Draco so thoroughly that he can't talk at all. Both, probably.

Excerpt:

Mm, yes. Because, here’s the thing; Harry likes that his boyfriend is smart. 

He likes that Draco is passionate and articulate, and he likes that he can talk to almost anyone. 

He likes that he sometimes doesn’t understand Draco’s jokes, and that on occasion, his sarcasm is so profound that Harry really can’t tell whether he’s being serious or not. He likes it when Draco says something awfully dry, and he has a feeling that he’s just been insulted, but can’t be quite sure. 

He likes that Draco reads Muggle literature (he didn’t stop trying to pester Harry into reading The Picture of Dorian Gray for fucking weeks. “It’s like, so completely gay, Harry”. Harry tried, and didn’t get very far. Draco ended up reading it to him, and Harry was happy with that compromise) and listens to political podcasts. He likes that Draco researches alchemy while he’s studying at law school, just for fun — that he’s a swot, basically (perhaps even more so than Hermione, though it would send both of them into a strop if he ever voiced this opinion aloud.) 

Sometimes, when Harry’s brought home a casefile to review in the evenings, he’ll ask Draco to explain a paragraph of legal jargon to him, just to hear him talk, and see him wave his hands in that expressive way of his. 

Harry also likes it, however, when Draco gets… hmm. Harry’s friend Lachlan from five-aside-Quidditch, who is really fit and who Harry and Draco have on occasion invited into the bedroom (Harry hasn't ever been so simultaneously mortified and entertained as when Ron and Hermione walked in on the three of them. Ron essentially carked it right there in the doorway, and Hermione couldn’t look at him without blushing for weeks. His friends are so square, and he loves them terribly for it), calls it sex-dumb. Draco, when’s he’s emerged from said haze post-fuck, calls it fuck-drunk. Harry doesn’t know what to call it, but he thinks it’s utter perfection.  

This fic - YUM. Love the premise, love the dynamic, love the sex. Just the perfect little PWP.

because it apparently takes a village to write a fic, i’d like to thank @sitp-recs and @teacup-tai for telling me everything about christmas in brazil! also @draco4draco​ and @primavera-cerezos​ for being lovely and doing some beta reading on some of my pre-prompt drafts and @the-starryknight​ for (*takes deep breath*): handholding, love, support, chatting plot ideas/how to fix my severe lack of plot and overabundance of feelings with me, letting me cry in her DMs, listening to me be a whiny baby, talking me off the ledge, screaming commentary on google docs, enabling procrastination, adding at least 3 projects to my wip list every single day and just generally being the most wonderful alpha/beta/cheerleader/mate

now that my gratitude has been expressed, some notes on me attempting something for 25 Days of Draco and Harry: i can’t promise you’ll feel very festive throughout this wee advent fic of mine and i will say from the get go that i am not a plot-forward writer so fuck knows how i’m carrying a story across 25 whole chapters

A/N: it is 10 pm where I live and I just go off work, so please excuse my bad writing

I really tried to sleep trust me, I was tired and exhausted but something about lying next to a complete stranger, made me feel uncomfortable. I know I am going to marry him and we are probably going to have children, I still know nothing about him.

After shifting around on my side of the bed, for probably the past hour, I heard a sigh. “can you please stop moving, some people want to sleep!”.

“don’t you think I do not want to fall asleep, because I want to, I am exhausted.”

“Then close your eyes and go to sleep, it´s not that easy.”

“I want to go home.”, what the only thing I could get out before busting into tears. I tried my best to hide it by facing not Draco, but my shaky breath, was not really helping.

*Draco pov*

Draco sat up, as he heard the crying alike sounds. As he saw the tears streaming down your face, he panicked. He was never in this situation that he has to comfort another person, normally people were comforting him, but the last time someone saw him cry feels like ages ago.

The only thing he remembers was that his mother used to pet his back when he got upset as a child.

*Y/N pov*

I noticed that Draco sat up but I tried my best to hide my face. Suddenly I felt a comforting hand on my back, who was moving up and down my spine.

Never in a million years have I ever thought that Draco Malfoy would comfort me. But the only thing I really wanted was a hug. Like my mother gave me when I was little.

After about 5 minutes of Draco petting my bag, I turned around and laid my face on his chest, which was covered by a t-shirt. I hugged him as tight as I could and imagined that it was my mother, I know it sounds silly but I just needed a hug.

Draco froze a few second as I hugged him, but then he put both of his arms around me and pained small circles with his hand.

It did thank my a few minutes to fully calmed myself down. Dracos hands already stopped moving and I could feel his chest falling and rising evenly.

I looked up to his face and his eyes where closed. I was thinking about moving back to my side of the bed, but his chest was just too conformable.

It had snowed overnight, as it always did on the last night of November. Whatever the weather was beyond the boundaries of the Malfoy estate, soft flakes would begin to fall as December arrived, every year, without fail. It was the same old magic that guaranteed fine summers for the kitchen garden and the crops on the further reaches of the land, and crisp winds in the autumn to carry away dead leaves. December came, accompanied by snow and ice, and with them the Fȳr finches; vibrant red birds with dark eyes and a voracious appetite for winter-ripened snowberries and the dusty red fruits dotting the yew trees.

Draco had watched, eagle-eyed, for them as a child; their arrival was the first sign of winter. His first sight of the jewel-bright colour in the garden was always a cause for excitement, they heralded the festive season, the coming of Yule. His adolescence might have been a tangled mess of poor choices and worse mistakes, but his childhood had been sweet. He had grown up adored, cosseted and cared-for. He would have his house-elf Marigold dress him in his warmest clothes, and march himself into the garden as soon as the first snowflake fell, then wander until he had spotted that flutter of red amidst the muffling white and dark evergreen. As soon as he caught sight of one of the finches, he would run back to the house, trailing snow-wet footprints and a grumbling house-elf behind him, until he reached his mother and announced his discovery. Always, she would question him; she would ask him to describe the bird, was he sure it wasn’t just a robin redbreast.

When she was satisfied, she would sit him next to her on the loveseat and take a pomegranate from the towering display on the side-table—they always appeared at the same time as the snow and the Fȳr finches. When his mother cut it open it was the beginning of winter in miniature; soft-white pith and delicate ruby beads. She would eat the jewel-like flesh with a golden pin. He would pick at the fruit with small fingers while she watched with a tolerant smile, and he’d bear the scolding for his stained hands and mouth from his governess afterwards with satisfaction.

Hogwarts was ten years behind him now, and with it the war, and his childhood, too. It had been long enough that Draco could now allow himself to take pleasure in the traditions of his childhood again, to remember with a fondness untarnished by the rosy-tint of self-denial. He could navigate deftly around the knowledge of his parent’s failures—and his own—and was well practiced at heaving himself out of the quicksand of regret.

But this was the first time he had been at the Manor for the first day of December in years. He had started flitting south for the winter when Blaise studied at the Academy of Ancient Arts in Egypt when they were twenty, and then kept the habit. But Pansy had wheedled and cajoled for the entirety of their summer turn on the Côte d’Azur, and he had agreed to come home for the entirety of December—“New Year’s too, darling”—so now he stood at the wide mullioned windows in the blue parlour like he had as a little boy, and watched as a pair of Fȳr finches busied themselves on the snowberry bush in the wide herbaceous border just outside.

It had been a long time since his fingers were stained with fruit, but he picked out a pomegranate from the sideboard anyway. He copied his mother’s Segmentum spell and, just like when he was a child, the peel split away into star-shaped petals, revealing the glassy red pearls of flesh within. He broke off a few—fingers no longer small enough to select each bead one at a time—and brought them to his mouth. They burst under the pressure of teeth and tongue, sweet and redolent with nostalgia, he chewed and the sweetness gave way to the bitter tang of the seeds.

The snow fell softly onto the gardens and grounds, and Draco ate his pomegranate, and was glad for it all; glad for the memories, glad for being here for this moment, glad for the bitter understanding of life, and glad for the sweetness of it, too.

What is 25 Days of Draco and Harry, you ask? Well, it’s very simple: you get 25 pictures as prompts, you write 25 drabbles/ficlets/chapters, each based on one of the pictures. I know it says ‘challenge’, but you can use the prompts as broadly as you like—or not at all, if you don’t feel like writing that day. This is about having fun, and giving writing every day a try! The challenge has two forms: EARLY BIRD: You get all 25 picture prompts on October 25th. Write a story based on each of the prompts Your stories can be part of one fic or stand-alone Start posting one story a day, from December 1st to December 25th You can post on LJ, Tumblr, AO3, or your other social media accounts—just make sure you link your posts to the 25 Days Challenge so people can find them when they search the tag! Again, just because you go the early bird prompts does not mean you're required to post every day. It just gives you a head start on writing to make posting every day a bit easier.
