“Can I help–” Draco blinks, really looking at the person, at their mess of pink curls, their round gold glasses, their knit sweater with little white sheep. They’re short but stocky, with an arcing scar that trails over their eyelid and down their cheek, and Draco sucks in a breath because– because– “Draco,” the person says, and that brightly dimpled smile is all Harry, and Draco drops his book on the counter in shock, barely registering that he’s lost his place. “Harry?” Draco says, his voice cracking. He coughs, then pulls his sleeves over his fingers, trying not to panic. “Hi.” “Hi.” Harry rocks on the balls of his feet, still smiling. “Your hair is pink,” Draco says, because he doesn’t know what else to say, and the last time he saw Harry his dark curls were nearly brushing his shoulders, but now they hit the top of his ears and look like fairy floss. “It is.” “Well.” Draco picks up his book again, opening to a random page so he can look away from Harry, who seems too bright against the dark winter night outside. “Let me know if I can help you find something.” “Draco,” Harry says, sounding confused. Draco resolutely stares at his book, not reading a word. “I– how are you here? I mean. Why are you here? I didn’t expect–” “I work here,” Draco says. “As you can see.” “Yeah,” Harry says softly. “Okay.” He moves away from the counter, and Draco exhales, holding the book so tightly to keep his hands from shaking. What the hell is Harry doing here, out in the middle of nowhere, in Draco’s town? It isn’t fair that he can just show up, looking like a spring flower, grown into the roundness of his face, to ruin Draco’s already dismal Christmas season. No.

December 10

Harry’s lying on top of the covers in his pants, staring at the ceiling and thinking about the sweet release of Dreamless Sleep, when the front door of his cottage opens.

It’s about a hundred times as loud in the middle of the night, and he springs upward, clutching the comforter to his chest like a Victorian lady. Harry’s on top of it, so it barely covers his prick, and he’s in the midst of remembering that Draco saw him sulk around his cottage wearing only the duvet when Draco bursts into the bedroom, breathing hard.

“What a day for a swim,” he pants.

“Draco.” Harry’s heart pounds so hard he thinks it’ll give out. “It’s the middle of the bloody night.”

“I can’t sleep. You can’t sleep. Come on, Potter. Let’s swim.”

“Yes,” says Harry. He gets out of bed and pulls on a vest, then finds his shoes and glasses, then goes out to the sitting room, where Draco is tapping his foot, fast and irritated.

Through the leaves, the sky glitters with stars. Crickets shriek in the woods around them. Harry has to rush to keep up with Draco’s long strides.

They follow the path out of the trees and over the hills, then past a car park and another wood. They pass a bigger cottage and the mill pond.

“Finally,” Draco says as they pass another clutch of trees. “The swimming lake.”

He takes them all the way ’round to the far side, where there’s a little dock. Draco marches right to the end and strips his shirt over his head without so much as a shall we get naked, Potter?

Wandcastle Christmas

I am very pleased to bring you my 2024 advent story. I haven't done one in ages (and they were all Klaine - for example Love on the Rocks), but this one is Drarry and I had a blast writing it. It is a continuous story of about 20k total, with one chapter posted every day between now until the 25th. The first chapter is short, so I'll post it all below, but please go to A03 here and subscribe if you want to read all of it and see the daily artwork prompts. Thanks to the mods of the 25 Days of Draco and Harry challenge for organizing this!

Summary: Harry’s dealing with an injury that won’t seem to heal, and Draco is mourning the loss of his mother.  But they’re both going with their friends on a holiday vacation, in hopes that the Christmas spirit will lift their own.  And oh yeah, they’re exes.

Chapter 1

“So, I’ve got some good news,” Harry says.  He can’t help the smile that spreads across his face as he anticipates how happy Hermione will be to hear this.  “I can go away with you guys after all!”

Hermione turns from where she has been hanging a wreath on the door to Harry’s hospital room.  St. Mungo’s generally doesn’t allow decorations, but as so often happens, Hermione found a loophole in the rules.  Harry isn’t really sure what the loophole is, something to do with patient morale and countering seasonal depression.  He’s grateful to her, but no amount of decorating can compete with actually getting out of here.

“Sorry, Harry, what did you say?”  Hermione asks.

He thinks he was plenty clear, but he explains anyway.  “I got the healers to sign off on the trip – the holiday trip?  I can come with you!”

A look of near panic flashes across Hermione’s face, and Harry feels his stomach drop.

“That is, I mean, if you still want me to come?  I don’t really need that much help getting around anymore, my leg is lots better-”

“What?  No, Harry, of course we want you to come.  Of course, of course, that’s wonderful!”  Hermione sits down on the bed and pulls Harry into a sideways hug.

“Okay then,” Harry says, refusing to acknowledge the jab of pain he feels as Hermione jostles the bed.  It’s been months and yet the spell damage to his right leg hasn’t gone away, despite multiple treatments and even an experimental muggle-magical hybrid surgery.  It’s better than it was, but far from healed.  If he’s going to be in pain anyway, he might as well be in pain somewhere other than St. Mungo’s.  “If you’re sure?  There’s still space, right?”

“Of course, there’s always space for you!” Hermione agrees, although her tone sounds oddly forced.  “I can’t wait to tell Ron, he’ll be so glad.”

“Brilliant,” says Harry, leaning into Hermione’s shoulder.  He really didn’t want to spend the holidays by himself.  It’s not going to be easy getting around with his dodgy leg, but he’ll figure it out.  And his friends will help him, they always do.  No one will mind.

“It’s only…” Hermione says, her voice trailing off dejectedly.

Harry twists to see Hermione’s face.  He should have known there was a catch.  It seems like there always is, for Harry.  “It’s only… what?”

Summary:

“I don’t have any friends, Potter,” Draco says, and the last name hurts, is meant to hurt, even though Harry knows Draco is feeling defensive and vulnerable. Still, Harry feels a sting right through his ribcage. “How can this possibly be reciprocal? I can’t take you round to my friends, my family is -”

“You have friends,” Harry says, steadily. “And family. Andromeda and Teddy.”

“They like you better,” Draco pouts, and Harry feels affection bubbling up to the surface despite himself. 

“We’ll start with them, then,” he concedes. “And work our way up to Hermione and Ron.

Draco doesn’t say no, and Harry inwardly celebrates a small victory in getting Draco to come out of his cocoon of defensive self-loathing.

On the third Christmas after the war...

CW: injury, hospital stay, trapped in body experience

The third Christmas after the war Harry was aware of the celebrations happening, however he didn't have time to join them.

He was still in training. Robards nevertheless had assigned him a case of his own.

Harry was desperate to prove himself.

The night before Christmas he had a breakthrough, running head first into danger as usual.

But this time he paid for it.

It hadn't looked dangerous. A lovely old brick house, a small fence, a well kept garden. Something he would want for himself one day.

It all went to hell.

The next thing he remembered was briefly waking up in St Mungo's, hearing his friends whisper at his bedside while he drifted in and out of consciousness.

He heard the Healer as he told them to leave, that Harry was stable and they couldn't do anything more to help that night.

Hermione cried as they all walked away.

Harry desperately tried to fight his own body, wanting to tell them he was awake, that he'd be fine, but he couldn't.

He wanted to scream, and throw his arms into the air, rage at the Healer for sending them away.

No sound left his lips, and the biggest movement he managed was a twitch of his hand.

Resigning, he decided there was nothing he could do but allow himself to drift off again, hoping he'd be better the next time he woke up.

He nearly missed the quiet sound of the door opening once more.

Footsteps approached his bed and a cold hand took his own.

"You really shouldn't worry your friends so much, Potter."

Harry knew that voice immediately. He'd hear it even when a million people were speaking at the same time.

Malfoy.

He couldn't answer, couldn't move, but he heard the monitoring spell on his heart beep faster as he tried and failed over and over again to react.

"Well look at that," Malfoy laughed, drily. "Seems like you're still in there after all. Happy to see me? Or are you mad? I really can't tell."

Malfoy stayed silent, his hand in Harry's shaking slightly.

"I can't stay, I told them I forgot something in your room. But how about this, for the sake of tradition?"

Harry heard rustling before feeling soft warm lips pressed against his forehead.

Malfoy left quickly after that, not saying another word.

Harry wanted to laugh, scream and cry about the entire fucked up situation. But his body refused to cooperate.

So he drifted off, waiting, hoping.

There’s no way back. We love you, Harry. Take care.”

Hello friends! I, along with my co-mod, timothysboxers, are thrilled to announce that 25 Days of Draco and Harry will run again in 2024. We want to thank navi1088 for creating our banner art. His work can be found at AO3 and tumblr under the same name. For those who may not be familiar with this challenge, we have included the rules at the end of this post, and we strongly encourage you to read these. And for the loyal fans of 25 Days of Harry and Draco: In 2024, we will be doing both Early-bird and Traditional prompts as usual. Again, we're running on LJ, DW and tumblr – the rules will be the same as last year. Because it seemed to work out quite well last year, the Early-bird Prompts will once again be available in October, and we will be including the Image Descriptions along with the prompts. Early bird prompts will be available no later than 13 October 2024, allowing creators over 7 weeks and some change to work on their posts. The signup period will open on 6 October 2024. Also, we will have the Discord server specifically for 25 Days of Draco and Harry participants. Like last year, this will be a place where early bird participants can discuss (in a channel just for them) the prompts and how they might use them. Traditional participants may join the Server at any time, and will also have dedicated channels for their prompts and discussions. The 2024 rules at a glance— Common Guidelines and Notes If you are creating individual works, please select "This Work is Part of a Series" to gather your works together. This will make them much easier to find in future!

If you are creating a multi-chaptered work, please use the "This Work has Multiple Chapters" option to ensure your chapters stay together.

An AO3 collection is available, and you are encouraged to post your works to it. Search for "25 Days of Draco and Harry 2024".

25 Days of Draco and Harry 2024 - Traditional No changes from prior years. An image prompt is posted starting at midnight US-EST on 1 December, and you create a work based on that prompt and post before the next day's prompt goes up. Each of your posts can be part of a larger work or they can stand alone. 25 Days of Draco and Harry 2024 - Early Bird You receive access to all 25 photo prompts at once when Early Bird access opens. This is a similar timeframe as previous years. The idea is to give participants time to prepare and create something before the insanity of December starts. You will post one work per day for each prompt. This can be a stand-alone story or each day can be a part of a bigger story.

We also encourage individuals or a group to create a podfic of a past 25 Days story, subject to the consent of the author(s). ♥ The advantages are this: 1. you can use the picture prompts in any order you chose 2. you can start creating early and have many of your posts ready to go before December 1st. 3. you get the prompts all at once so you can pre-plan your story and how you will use each prompt.

Detailed Rules The basic rules of 25 Days of Draco and Harry – Traditional Edition: The challenge is to write a drabble, ficlet, story, create an artwork, a comic, etc. for the image posted each day from 1 December to 25 December. Written works for each prompt should be a minimum of 100 words, but there is no maximum. They can be twenty-five one-shots or each one can be a part of a bigger story. Pictures will be posted at midnight EST and you have until the next midnight to complete your work. You may combine this with other communities or tumblr prompts. Your work does not have to be a story of the picture – you can use any part of the picture, or take inspiration from what that picture says to you. Traditional Prompts must be used in their posted order. If you fall behind, you can post more than once a day to get caught up. You're also welcome to post as life allows, meaning you don't have to worry about being on time. You can also combine a few days or prompts into one work, but the true challenge is to post every day for 25 days within the 24-hour time frame. You do not need to sign-up for the Traditional edition, the prompts will be made available beginning 1 December at midnight EST. Early-bird Edition: After signups close you will be given access to the 25 picture prompts no later than Sunday, 13 October.

You may use these prompts in any order you choose – but each prompt may only be used once.

The challenge remains to post a daily work from 1 to 25 December using one of the provided prompts. Each should be posted between 12 midnight (EST) and 11:59 PM (EST) the next night.

For written works, the minimum word count is 100 words per prompt.

“Wake up,” Malfoy says. “It’s spring. The sun is shining. The snow finished melting weeks ago.”

“I’m not here.” Harry’s voice is shot. He can’t remember the last time he got up. It doesn’t matter. He pulls the covers over his head. “Go away.”

Footsteps approach, and then Draco sodding Malfoy whips the covers off Harry, then hauls him out of the bed.

“What in Merlin’s ancient arse are you doing?” Harry shouts.

Malfoy drags him through the cottage and out to the doorstep, into the sun.

“Ouch!” Harry hides his eyes.

Malfoy slaps his hands down.

“I can’t see!”

“Don’t be silly.” Malfoy’s iron grip on Harry’s arm hurts a bit. It feels obnoxiously alive. “What you see is the clear, warm light of April. And that means we’re beginning a whole new year together. We’re going to do all sorts of things, Potter. We’re going to skip through the meadows. We’re going to run through the woods. We’re going to swim in the river. In the evenings, we’re going to sit right here—”

“There’s no chairs!”

“—and count the stars.”

“You count them!” Harry wrenches his arm away from Malfoy. “I’m too tired. I’m going back to bed.”

He stomps through the cottage, throws himself into the bed, and pulls the covers tight around his shoulders.

Steady footsteps follow him. “If you do that, Potter, you’ll miss all the fun.”
