Books read in 2025 #18 - “Tarzan The Untamed” by Edgar Rice Burroughs
This is a strange muddled Tarzan outing. In many ways it’s a soft-reboot as ERB once again strips his ape-man of the trappings of civilization he’d built up as Lord Greystoke and returns him to a pure animal of the jungle bent on revenge for the atrocity that opens the story.
Written around the end of World War One the story addresses the conflict in East Africa and is filled with the jingoistic prejudices of the time alongside the usual uncomfortable racial stereotyping.
But that being said there are in effect three good pulp adventure stories here of a quest for revenge, a lost airman and a femme fatale spy, and the inevitable lost city. However any real sense of ugrency is somewhat lost in an interwoven narrative.
The ending also feels rushed with all the dangling plot threads neatly resolved in the last chapter, and one key item from the early part of the book that was then rarely mentioned again suddenly being sorted in penultimate paragraph.

The encounters I had through the app might never be repeated, but nobody I’ve met on there has pretended that those encounters haven’t mattered to them in some way, or that they weren’t, in the moment we sought each other out, very much needed.

Reading Adventures
My first books of 2025!
I finished Amy's Christmas Wish by Seralynn Lewis. I started this one early in December, but just couldn't get through it. I finally skim read the last several chapters and finished it today.
The story follows Amy, a baker who owns a B&B, her brother Bryan and Zeke, a childhood friend of the two. Zeke loses his home and has to go home to Worthy, Texas. He hasn't spoken with Amy or Bryan since their other brother Charlie died while the two were serving in Afghanistan. Zeke blames himself for Charlie's death, as Charlie had a lung condition and refused to go to the doctor for it, despite Zeke's begging. Zeke finally gave up asking and right after that, Charlie died.
Zeke has never told anyone what happened, and he was discharged from the Army with hearing loss.
Amy hears rumors of a new boutique hotel opening in their town soon, and worries the new business will negatively affect her B&B. Once Zeke returns, she renews her friendship with him and begins to fall for him. He holds back, feeling too much guilt over her brother's death and his supposed involvement.
The conflict over the "big secret" was way overstated and unnecessary. Survivor's guilt is a real thing, I understand that, but this was way too much, and Amy's overreaction was stupid. The resolution over the boutique hotel was interesting, but the dropped plot line over the arson of the carriage house bothered me a lot.
I gave it three stars. I didn't really like it.
I read Deadly New Year by Helen Golden all in one sitting. It was quite a short book, and the plot moved quickly. This book details the murder of Jasmine Curslon during the New Year's Eve party Lady Beatrice is holding. Jasmine's sister, boyfriend, and chef are all suspects, as each of them have a motive and opportunity.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I was surprised by how quickly the book flew by. I kept detailed notes of the mystery, trying to solve it before the characters did, but it was solved too quickly, and the murderer just confessed when pressed too hard. So that was disappointing, but I loved the book. I enjoy books and movies set during that weird post-Christmas, New Year week.

First DNF of the year.
It was not great, definitely not for us.
It reminded us of Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets and we didn't like that either.

How to Walk With God
If a relationship with God is our priority, we can rest, knowing He will direct our path.
January 25, 2025Reading OptionsAAARelated ScriptureGenesis 5:21-242 Corinthians 5:18Proverbs 3:5-6Exodus 28-30
Genesis 5:21-24
Scripture tells us that Enoch’s walk with the Father was so close that “God took him” (Gen. 5:24). This implies Enoch didn’t die but was taken directly into the Lord’s presence. It pleases God when His children seek to follow Him with this same closeness. Consider these aspects of a vibrant walk with the Lord:
Reconciliation. This term essentially means “God moving toward us.” We can be joyful because the responsibility is all His. Through the cross of Christ, God has already made His move in our direction. 2 Corinthians 5:18 says, “Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.”
Trusting God. We must have faith that, through Jesus, God provides all we need in order to walk intimately with Him.
Agreement. To appreciate the closeness God longs to have with us, we must agree with what Scripture teaches about His Son, His Word, the church, and sin.
Fellowship. Just as human relationships fall apart without regular interaction, our intimacy with God weakens when we don’t spend time with Him.
The walk of faith is a beautiful journey. When we seek the Lord above all else, He’ll direct our path (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Books read in 2025 #17 - “Star Trek The Next Generation - Chains of Command” by W.A. McCay & E. L. Flood.
There were some good ideas here, but somehow the ideas and the plot never seemed to really work together, so the result was a somewhat mediocre Star Trek tale with no real impact.
The concept of a race of aliens based on an avian physiology could have opened up a lot of opportunities but I never felt that they were that well defined, nor the differences between them and humanoids asfully explored as it could have been.
