#2025 writing project

I'm planning out my posting schedule for the start of 2025, specifically essays related to polyglot things such as learning multiple languages simultaneously, self-driven and project-driven learning, setting measurable (and unmeasureable) skills-based goals, and polyglot paradoxes. I'll be posting these as notes alongside my polyglot journal excerpts on substack and tumblr.

If any one of my posts is to break containment, make it this one.

Before January 2025, download your favorite fics, especially those with smut or queer content.

If Project 2025 goes into effect (which it very likely will now that we have three red branches of government in the US), they may attempt to restrict the use/sharing of media on sites like ao3.

This particularly applies to fics with smut or any type of queer content, because the official Project 2025 document states, "Pornography, manifested today in the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology and sexualization of children, for instance... has no claim to First Amendment protection... Pornography should be outlawed."

Now, I don't expect ao3 to disappear or go anywhere without a fight, but it's best to be on the safe side these days.

To download your favorite fics:

Go to archiveofourown.org and open the fic you want to download.

At the top right corner, to the right of the 'subscribe' button, is a button that says 'download'. Click it.

A drop-down menu will give you the option to choose the format of your download. Choose your preferred format (.epub and .pdf are my personal favorites -- .epub lets you open a fic in the apple books app and .pdf is compatible with like every device and program out there).

When you click the button for your preferred format, a pop-up window appears confirming your choices. The title of the document will default to the title of the fic, so be aware of that and consider changing conspicuous titles to something ignorable, especially if you share the computer.

You're done! Now do this with all your favorite fics!

Project 2025 makes it very possible that we could lose AO3. It features same sex relationships and smut and could be something that the new administration sees as an enemy. It’s possible that it would simply be banned in the US and other countries can still use it, but since I’m pretty sure it’s an American website the whole thing might just be destroyed instead. So everyone might lose it.

Here’s what we should all do just in case.

1. Download your favorite works as a PDF and back them up on multiple devices so you don’t lose them.

2. If you are a writer, try to publish your works on multiple different platforms like fanfiction.net and wattpad. I’m a Doctor Who writer so I know about whofic, but do research on your fandom to see if there’s fandom specific sites available.

Edit: I want to be extra clear that readers should download works that aren’t about same sex love or don’t have smut too. I think it goes without saying but I want to be very clear that the Trump administration is more likely to ban or delete the whole archive than it is to sort through what content it deems “appropriate”.

Fandom is one of the only safe spaces for mental escapism that some people have right now, and fear mongering and spreading misinformation is helping no one. Fanfiction is not going to disappear off the internet tomorrow.

I understand that a geriatric orange beast winning the election is very upsetting and it has led to a lot of people mentally spiralling into doomsday scenarios, but the last thing that fucking cheeto is coming for is your fanfiction. AO3 is so fucking low priority - it's not even on their radar.

And even though you consider smut to be porn, by most legal definitions, it's not. If they would try to institute a porn ban (which would be incredibly stupid and would probably upset a lot of old Republican white men anyway, and we all know they don't do things that go against their own personal interests) - they would be going after visual media. Not written media. And while Project 2025 does talk about banning books, it speaks about banning mass produced, widespread books with certain subjects in them - not some indie fanfic with fisting with 100 hits on AO3.

The fact that AO3 is a non-profit and does not make any money and does not have any ads is usually what protects us in these legal situations. And like I said - scrubbing 10,000 gay Destiel fics from the internet forever is incredibly low priority (likely not a priority at all) for the Trump administration.

So don't panic download every fanfiction you've ever read, and please don't panic if you don't have 7 hard drives to download all of AO3 onto. Everyone is just upset about the results of the election and apt to believe that the world is going to change overnight, but it won't. If (and that is a big fat IF) the internet will be censored (which will be damn near impossible to do) and IF the future of fanfiction will be jeopardized, we will have more warning to prepare before it happens.

PS: fuck you to everyone spreading the misinformation and speaking about this as if it's going to happen for certain tomorrow. You are only adding to the gloom and causing more dread and anxiety where there is more than enough.

Reminder to anyone who reads/writes fanfiction: buy a hard drive/flash drive/whatever you can get your hands on and download as much fanfiction as you can.

Once tr*mp hits office, one of the first things related to project 2025 is the banning of porn and all sexually explicit material. This can and will include fanfiction off of here, AO3, Wattpad, etc.

If they’re small one shots, print them off so that you have physical copies. If they’re too big to print, either do it in multiple sittings or download onto a flash drive. Downloading to your files is no longer a good option. You need something physical that is separate from your main device.

I hate that this is what we’ve come to, but we’re literally doing this prohibition style.

As a side note, make sure that if you’re reading any books involving queer content, that will most likely be counted as sexually explicit once these laws go into effect. Start stock piling on any books you’ve been planning to buy. There are several lists of books that will be banned, so go look at those if you need any ideas.

Edit: thank you @theladyoffangorn for letting me know to include this! AO3 will be very low on the list of things targeted by these new laws! The biggest issue for fanfic readers is that more authors will be deleting, orphaning, or putting their works on private. Make sure to check out the AO3 subreddit if you need any help with downloading fics. Remember, laws like these take time, so this will not happen right away. You have time to get your bearings, so please do not panic like I did while writing this.

hey guys, i was just thinking that maybe we could start archive all the A03 fics we can.

Project 2025 will mostly likely come into effect in January, which will also bring about the end of websites which hold queer centric content. obviously, AO3 fics art usually queer.

i would really like for maybe an organised way of doing this - maybe divvying up people/groups of people to do certain fandoms, ships, tags, etc?

if anyone is interested or has any idea of how to do this in an efficient and timely manner, please respond.

i don’t want to see people’s years of self-exploration and fan content to simply disappear into the aether because of a fucking Christo-Fascist government. i want to try to prevent that as much as possible.

it might be a pipe dream, but i want to give it a shot

Alright, so, Tr*mp's no longer pretending to not know what project 2025 is and they're still planning to go full steam ahead into that. I'm on a mailing list for Authors Against Book Bans and for Every Library, both fighting against book bans, fighting against project 2025, and protecting libraries and the freedom to read. There are obviously a lot of other really really scary things in project 2025, but I know where to send people to sign petitions and how to email legislators to fight for our freedom to read and write and share. So, if you're in the US, could you please help us out by signing and sending the emails?

I may be Canadian but Project 2025 scares me so bad that it sends me past my usual mental illness response of crying and right off the deep end into pure rage that makes me want to write and publish as many pro-queer pro-science Christian things as I possibly can.

every once in a while i get violently depressed over the fact that my life ended before it got to start.

i didn’t graduate high school due to early onset schizoaffective disorder. getting diagnosed caused me to be moved into special education classes in the last month of high school. i was short on graduating by exactly 1 chemistry class.

my mental illness is exacerbated by my physical illness, which i’ve had and known about since early childhood.

i’m in the process of getting SSDI, which, for me, means i’m not able to work an “actual” job. it’s only under the table work for the rest of my life.

i’m medically discouraged from learning to drive, so i can’t do shit like door dashing or instacart.

i feel kinda doomed to be a burden to my mother forever. i can’t help but feel like im disappointing everyone in my life by virtue of being disabled. i feel like i could’ve done so much more with my life. like i’m capable of doing more, although im simultaneously incapable.
