The Card~
Has anyone stopped thinking about this since it happened? No? Me neither.
(ID in alt and under cut)
ID: 1a. Shot from within Guillermo's room under the stairs as Nandor, in his usual belted coat but with his hair half up in a ponytail rather than a bun, holds the curtain aside with one arm. He announces, "You may keep your shit and do your human things in here." Guillermo, 19 years old with fluffy overgrown hair in a side part and a pimply chin, ducks around him to step inside. He is wearing a black lady gaga shirt over a white button up and jeans, has a duffel bag slung over his chest, and a backpack hanging on one shoulder. He stares into the sad little room, unable to muster any enthusiasm as he replies "Oh... Um." 1b. Reverse shot behind Nandor's shoulder, the tiny room's faded walls, bare yellowed mattress, and single abandoned pillow visible in the background. Nandor turns in profile to the viewer and imperiously demands, "I will allow you two minutes to settle your affairs, then I expect you to begin dusting the fancy room as it has begun to grow bunnies." Guillermo, having stepped into the room and pulled off his duffel bag, turns back to him with a nervous smile and says "Of course! Thank you, Nandor." Nandor replies, "You will address me as 'sir' or 'master,' Greenberg." Guillermo corrects him, "It's Guillermo. Sir." Nandor snaps, "Whatever." 1c. Reverse shot, Nandor standing in the doorway holding the curtain open, gesturing with his finger as he turns to leave. He scolds, "A familiar is not expected to be correcting a vampire! I will see you in two minutes; try not to die until then." From offscreen, Guillermo calls out "Oh, wait- uh, Master?" 1d. Close up on Nandor as Guillermo continues, "I got you something." Nandor whips his head back around in not-unpleasant surprise, starry eyes landing directly on Guillermo for the first time.
2. Wide shot of them both in profile, the entryway between the familiar's room and the main hall dividing the space between them. Guillermo, having deposited his bags, steps toward Nandor with a greeting card held out in both hands. Blushing, and with his eyes fixed on the card rather than Nandor's face, Guillermo stammers, "It's just a stupid card, I-I didn't really know how to... I mean, I just wanted you to know how grateful I am. To be your familiar." Nandor reaches out for the card with one careful hand, fingers splayed and head held back as if he thought it might explode. His fingers meet the card precisely where the two rooms meet.
3a. Close up of Nandor's hand holding the card, which has a smiling cartoon cheese block saying 'You're the Gratest!" to a cartoon cheese grater, which looks delighted and surprised. Offscreen, Guillermo says "Thank you for choosing me." 3b. Repeat. Nandor flips open the card to see Guillermo's handwritten inscription: "To be a vampire is my dream. But to be your familiar will be my honor. Thank you for this opportunity. -Guillermo". 3c. Close up on the top half of Nandor's face as he rears back slightly in surprise, cheeks flushed, eyes wide and shining with delight. The background turns a buttery yellow dotted with bokeh lights, the words 'my honor' repeating again and again throughout.
4a. Zoom out, shot from behind Guillermo's shoulder. Nandor flips the card closed and flips it toward his chest, free hand planting itself on his hip to feign indifference despite his fluster. He sputters, "Well, with all of your sappy time-wasting, you have only one minute left! Lateness reflects poorly on me as your master; you are not starting off on the good foot!" Guillermo startles to attention in the foreground, stammering out, "Right! Sorry sir, uh, master, sir." 4b. Shot from the hallway as Nandor steps out of Guillermo's room and sternly closes the curtain behind him, still holding the card to his chest with his free hand. 4c. Close up as Nandor hunches his shoulders protectively and raises the opened card up close to his face with a flustered and urgent expression, as if trying to read it in secret. 4d. Full body of Nandor from behind as he stands alone in the foyer, a long shadow stretching out in front of him as the room is lit green around him - Guillermo's color. A few bokeh lights float aimlessly around Nandor's head as he reads the card again, murmuring thoughtfully to himself, "...Guillermo...hmmm..."
5a. A few horizontal black bars indicate the passage of time. 5b. Shot inside a wardrobe, the door cracked open to let a beam of light fall inside. Stowed between hanging coats is a small wooden chest with the lid raised halfway up. Inside are a few hanging pendants, a roll of parchment, a golden fork, a discarded shirt, a few expired coupons, a folded letter with Nandor's name written on the front in Farsi, and Guillermo's card. It is front and center, illuminated by the beam of light, and clearly well-read, the spine creased and corners slightly dog-eared. Offscreen, Nandor calls, "Guillermo! You have destroyed a spider house, now where will she sleep??" Guillermo stutters out a confused apology, "I-? I'm sorry, Master!" Nandor continues, "That is one demerit for you, and one more year as my familiar!" Carved surreptitiously into the shelf in the wardrobe is the word 'end'. It's the end of the comic. /end ID

Thinking about certain similarities I have with 2009 guillermo at this point in time and I think I understand 19 y/o Memo's mentality as a 19 y/o myself who's had a nightmarish customer service job and who has a penchant for fictional vampires. Especially for one specific fictional vampire with long dark hair.
Imagine you're nineteen working a horrible customer service job and a stranger that looks A LOT like your fictional vampire crush walks in, offers you everything you've ever wanted, and on top of that, he looks LIKE THAT???
Tumblr media
I would risk it all too, memo. I get youuu
I, too, would be at his every beck and call
Like, yes sir, I will be your little soldier. It would indeed be an honor to be your familiar 🫡🫡🫡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From this moment on you own MY LIFE
Like LOOK AT HIM
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOOK. AT. HIM
Tumblr media
LOOK AT HIS BEAUTIFUL HAIR
Let me take care of you, sir. Let me give brushy brushies to your beautiful hair every day. Let me dress you up in the prettiest, most beautiful, expensive robes you've ever seen. The ones that make you feel like ROYALTY. Like the KING you are. Let me treat you like my very own personalized Barbie doll. I'll take care of your pretty rings and your pretty swords and your pretty capes. I'll floss your pretty fangs and give you relaxing bubble baths. I'll travel the world in a heartbeat just to get a bag of soil for you. I will let my morals become so hazy and distortedly fucked up just to feed you and keep you safe. You can clone my boyfriend all you want, I dont care.
I will make it so that our lives are so inevitably intertwined that you'll never be able to live without me ever again. You'll be a pathetic mess without me. You'll forget how it was to live without me to greet you and bid you goodnight EVERY. SINGLE DAY.
I'll make our relationship to be the most codependent fucked up mess anyone has ever seen. I'll be devoted to you. You'll be wrapped around my finger the same way I'm wrapped around yours
I UNDERSTAND GUILLERMO COMPLETELY
HE AND I ARE THE SAME
Anyway, I'm normal for a fictional character and for legal reasons this is a joke.

i love it when a film has its guts out. when the practical effects are visceral and slimy and slightly janky and clearly made by human hands, when green screen is used as a canvas for art rather than a substitute for reality, when the sets look like theatre pieces, when the lighting is unashamedly unrealistic because fuck it - it comes from the same place as the music, when the acting is messy and unfettered by irony, when you can feel the presence of the crew just offscreen pouring in months of hard work and late nights and sweat and love. when a film stops trying to be realistic and lets itself be raw and weird and INTERESTING
edit: glad people are enjoying this post! I originally wrote it about Bunny and the Bull (2009), which is my favourite film ever and you can watch it for free on youtube and in this google drive. enjoy! :)

now I am convinced that Nandor has a box with everything Guillermo has given him over the years. Wouldn't be surprised if he has memorized every single card or the exact moment he was given this gift

The Secret in their eyes - Passion
youtube
The scene above transitions into the scene below, which is incredibly shot . . . only one of the reasons this film is firmly in Rando's Top Ten Films of All Time.
youtube
If you saw and liked the Hollywood remake, please keep that information to yourself. 🤮
In any case, it's been on my mind since the recent election in Argentina. I guess the voters wanted to make Argentina great again and it seems that much like the US, nothing says "great" better than right-wing bullshit. 😏

Mother and Child (2009, Rodrigo García)
06/11/2023
Mother and Child is a 2009 film written and directed by Rodrigo García. Alejandro González Iñárritu, Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro join García to capture with great skill the powerful bond that exists between a mother and her child.
The film premiered on September 14, 2009 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Faced with her mother's insistence, Karen (Annette Benin) gave up the daughter she had at 14 for adoption. Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) is that little girl who now has to face her own issues about family, sexuality and power.

I’m so glad the Guillermo Del Toro Pinocchio movie is being received really well, because it was literally my most anticipated movie of the year! So here’s some fun facts about the crew, concept, and production that got me excited about this movie and that I think would excite much of tumblr as well:
-the screenplay was cowritten by Del Toro and Patrick McHale, creator of Over The Garden Wall and a writer on Adventure Time.
-the movie was codirected by Mark Gustasfon, who was the animation director of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
-the primary art/animation designers of this movie (production designer Curt Enderle, art director Robert DeSue, character designer Georgina Hayns, animation supervisor Brian Leif Hansen, and photography director Frank Passingham) previously worked on projects that include Coraline, the Corpse Bride, Paranorman, Isle of Dogs, Frankenweenie, Kubo, and Chicken Run.
-Besides Netflix, it was produced by the Henson company (always a good sign when you’re doing anything with puppets) and ShadowMachine, who have produced a lot of Adult Swim shows including Robot Chicken, Moral Orel, and Tuca and Bertie, as well as the Netflix original BoJack Horseman.
-Del Toro was inspired to make this adaptation due to the similarities he’d always noticed between the original Pinocchio story and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Both are about a man-made character’s relationship with his father/creator, and his attempts to understand what it means to be human. This inspiration is why the film takes on a gothic feel at times.
-the movie is over 10 years in the making. Del Toro announced the project in 2008 and production began in 2012, but it went into development hell and no further updates were made for several years. Del Toro has described it as his passion project, saying "I've wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”
-the backdrop of Mussolini’s Italy was intended to show how Pinnochio was able to find his own humanity and will in a time where everyone else was acting like a blindly obedient puppet. Del Toro wanted to deviate from the original book’s themes of obeying authority by making his Pinocchio virtuous for questioning the rules and forging his own set of morals. (Also if you know anything about Del Toro, the guy likes to dunk on fascism.)
-Del Toro didn’t feel the need to have Pinocchio become flesh-and-blood at the end of the movie, saying all you need to be a real human is to behave like one.
I was lucky enough to see this movie in 35 mm in a movie theatre on Thanksgiving weekend. If there are any movie theatre showings near you and you’re in a position to be able to attend them, I would totally recommend it especially if you can go with loved ones. It was a gorgeous, heartwarming, and magical movie to experience on a big screen and perfect for the late fall/winter holiday season.

yall KNOW this is exactly how it went
from this post
(ID in alt and under cut)
ID: Drawing of Guillermo and Nandor meeting at Panera Bread in 2009. Nandor's left shoulder and the bottom half of his face are visible in the foreground, tinted red and lined in white. He is looking upward over Guillermo's head, mouth open, fingers tapping thoughtfully at his chin as he tries to make sense of whatever menu he's looking at. Guillermo, 19 years old, shaggy-haired, and wearing a Panera apron and visor over a black polo, is standing behind the counter and staring intensely up at Nandor with undisguised lust. His hands are gripping the counter hard enough for it to crack, and there is drool escaping from the corner of his mouth. The counter and background are colored a bright green, punctuated with black lines of intensity behind Guillermo and an outline of black dots around his head and shoulders to represent los goosebumps. A thought bubble appears above his head in red, featuring a text post from @rosedominatesyou: "Hey, can I suck your dick? Can I put it in my mouth? Please? I promise i’ll give it so many kisses and make lots of pretty noises while I do. What was that? Sorry I couldn’t hear you, I was thinking about sucking your dick." /end ID

romance movie recs?
Maurice (1987, dir. James Ivory. M/M) - the OG gays who get a happy ending no matter what society says actually
Secretary (2002, dir. Steven Shainberg. M/F) - what if you wanted a romance movie but you wanted it to be a romance between two very mentally ill sadomasochistic freaks having a workplace relationship, and it rocked. what then
The Shape of Water (2017, dir. Guillermo del Toro. M/F) - GET THOSE EGGS IN YOU, SALLY HAWKINS. YOU FUCK THAT MERMAN
Big Eden (2000, dir. Thomas Bezucha. M/M) - This is THE gay slice-of-life romance movie, it's so lovely and gorgeous, I recommend it big time.
Fire Island (2022, dir Andrew Ahn. M/M) - Pride and Prejudice but make it gay, Asian, and (even) hot(ter)
Crimson Peak (2015, dir. Guillermo del Toro. M/F.) - did you say GOTHIC romance? and also that you love and crave incest and hauntings and dead butterflies?
Hello, My Name is Doris (2015, Michael Showalter. M/F.) - Sally Field embracing that MILF life, God bless her
Populaire (2012, dir. Régis Roinsard. M/F.) - I have a kink for secretaries. you knew that when you came here
the above are all fun movies i love but some random other gay (men) romances that i've rated highly on letterboxd are I Love You Phillip Morris (2009), Bedrooms and Hallways (1998, dir. Rose Troche), God's Own Country (2017, dir. Francis Lee), Breaking Fast (2020, dir. Mike Mosallam), and My Beautiful Launderette (1985, dir. Stephen Frears)

regarding the rally last saturday, here is a write up from The Hollywood Reporter. I've copied the text behind the cut:
As industry workers face layoffs, outsourcing and the specter of artificial intelligence, leaders of the union painted this year's bargaining cycle as a "do or die" moment.

Animation workers and supporters argued that recent technological and business shifts have left their craft hanging in the balance during a packed union rally in Burbank on Saturday, with one speaker positing that “the American animation industry is at stake.”
The Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839) organized the event before it heads into bargaining over a new three-year contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that will tackle hot-button issues like AI and outsourcing. Gathering at the parking lot of IATSE Local 80 in sweltering, mid-80-degree heat, attendees heard from guild leaders, local politicians, rank-and-file workers and a few boldfaced names (director Guillermo del Toro sent a rallying cry, telling the workers to “fight like hell”), who emphasized the urgency and stakes of this year’s talks.
The overall message was summed up by union president Jeanette Moreno King (Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe): “We’re at a crossroads in this industry with uncertainties we haven’t faced before,” she told the audience, adding, “We’re not just defending our jobs, we’re defending the soul of this industry."
Top of mind for both attendees and speakers was the threat of generative AI to animation workers. Addressing the audience, emcee Mike Rianda compared the plot of his 2021 film The Mitchells vs. the Machines to the situation that today’s union members face. “It’s funny that I’m [now] part of a group of actual human underdogs who are fighting a very real threat of robot replacement with AI,” he joked. Legendary character animator James Baxter (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King) emphasized in a short speech that art is made by humans. “If someone tells you that AI is just another tool, is just another paintbrush, they are wrong,” he said.
Talks are set to begin at the Sherman Oaks offices of the AMPTP on Monday and last through Friday, which is the final day of the union’s current contract extension.
In an interview at the event with The Hollywood Reporter, negotiating committee member and writer Joey Clift (PAW Patrol, Spirit Rangers) asserted that the union was fighting for the careers of current and future animation workers. “This really, for us, feels like a do-or-die negotiation cycle,” he said.
Dual Writers Guild of America and Animation Guild member Bill Wolkoff (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts), who has been a member of the latter union since 2009, emphasized that he had never seen animation workers so fired up. “This is the most engaged I’ve ever seen TAG members before, and I’m very excited to be out here for that reason and be a part of that,” he said.
The crowd at Saturday’s event was notably larger than the one attending a similar rally organized by the guild two years ago, during its last round of contract negotiations. While attendance numbers were not immediately available, according to negotiating committee member Clift, this year the union had over 2,000 RSVPs as of Friday, which more than doubles the crowd of the 2022 event.
It also had an engaged audience. Rock, Paper, Scissors writer Julia Prescott got a hearty response during a speech stating that if the union doesn’t make major changes to the contract now, it won’t have another chance. “The American animation industry is at stake and the drawing kid from your childhood is not going down without a fight,” she said. Storyboard artists Nora Meek and Charlie Jackson (The Patrick Star Show) also drew attention for their joint address. “What we’re going to win in this contract is more than just slowing down the race to the bottom. We’re going to win our industry back,” said Jackson.
Packing in the f-bombs, Writers Guild of America West board member Adam Conover (Adam Ruins Everything) drew loud applause during his speech to the group. He advocated for animation workers not to seek out the respect of companies during the negotiations. “You do not need their respect because they will never give it to you,” he said. “Their respect doesn’t matter. What matters is your respect for yourself. And if you respect yourself enough to say, ‘You know what, I will not work for you until I get what I deserve,’ then you will fucking win.”
