F-14 FUN FACT OF THE DAY #66

While deployed on a cruise to the Mediterranean aboard the USS Saratoga, VF-74 Be-Devilers painted their CAG bird with the Olympic rings to pay tribute to the 1992 Olympics being held in Barcelona, Spain. This particular F-14B Tomcat performed a flyover during President-elect William Jefferson Clinton’s inauguration three days after this picture was taken on 17 January 1993.

The Barcelona Opening Ceremony, 1992. We're at the end of history (kind of...), and Barcelona establishes itself as a major city where people frequently travel to today. Plus an archer shot a flame into the cauldron!

Notes:

--RIP Freddie Mercury --I love Cristina Hoyo's entire segment in this ceremony--she comes in riding a horse while so many flamenco dancers in Olympic colors dance around her. Then she gets a solo part, and goes off into the sunset. --Is it just me, or do the Spanish love their opera here? --A little less amateur hour here; we get a whole sequence featuring a boat, which I saw as Spanish exploration (and exploitation) over the seas to the Americas and beyond. --There were a lot of Western-style suits in the opening ceremony; even the Ethiopian delegation--who leans towards wearing traditional clothing--followed that trend. --It's funny seeing the Unified Team come into the stadium, and right after them was Estonia, who didn't buy into the Soviet project, not unlike its Baltic siblings. --I love how the ladies holding the country names are dressed in the flag's colors. --The lighting of the cauldron will never not be iconic.

Barcelona Olympics or 1992 election.

I have this sort of fuzzy awareness that the Olympics happened, but I remember a few specific things about the election: Dad taking me into the voting booth with him and seeing the news that Clinton won later that night.

I wasn’t born yet when the Challenger happened but it’s one of the first big stories I remember hearing about, because Christa McAuliffe was from my home state.

even though she died two years before i was born, there were always tabloids in the grocery store about JonBenét Ramsey’s death and “new breaks in the case”. i would always stare at them and wonder who the pretty blonde girl was that died. surprisingly i didn’t know anything about 9/11 until grade school.

30th July 1992: Ukrainian gymnast Tatiana Gutsu receives her gold medal in the All-Around competition at the Barcelona Olympics.

Gutsu also won gold in the Team Competition, silver on Uneven Bars and bronze for Floor Exercise.

Issey Miyake's Lithuania Olympic uniform, 1992 The result consisted of a hooded jacket made with random pleats, T-shirt, silver pants, cap, and shoes. The jacket included a collar with the national flag and name on it, it can be turned into a hood when fastened at the neck. A patchwork pattern of the Olympics logo, flag and country name was created in a width several times larger than the desired one prior to pleating to account for the contraction in width during pleating. Opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics, held that took place July 25–August 9, 1992

Freddie Mercury supposed to perform with Montserrat Caballé

The song was composed by Mercury and includes violins by Homi Kanga and Laurie Lewis, cello by Deborah Ann Johnston, horn by Barry Castle and percussion by Frank Ricotti. It was performed live at the opening by Montserrat, with Freddie's voice recordings and it was used as the title music to the BBC's coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics.

The music video was filmed at the world's largest nightclub, Privilege in Ibiza.
