Tribute

I laughed almost non-stop watching Deadpool & Wolverine. The crass and gross and the ridiculous are mixed in with just a bit of clever. And then there's the pure joy of watching to almost indestructible dudes killing each other in violent ways (it's a WB cartoon kind of fun).

But as always it's the layer below the humour that really hits. And in a prefect Deadpool way this one worked both in the movie but also on the meta level. It's the story of a failed superhero that the Avengers didn't want and whose girlfriend left. Here trying to save his world to save his friends. He gets a second chance at being who he always wanted to be but the price is abandoning everyone he came up with. MCU and Sacred Timeline is one person deal. But this is where Multiverse pays off. It means he can keep his friends and timeline. He just has to fight cybernocracy that would rather dismantle it instantly first.

And it's a story of a fallen studio which movies lost the audience and couldn't find the right way to tell it's stories (with extra layer of Disney's Marvel being on precipice of that too now). All it's properties buried and replaced for a new shinier thing. We could move on and only acknowledge the pieces that haven't been tarnished. And yet, this movie looks back at it all, and brings back the discarded ridiculed. Including the ones we never even got. Using Void to discard them and Alioth to eat them into oblivion is such a prefect metaphor you'd think it was invented for this Film. It's a prefect integration of MCU ideas for the plot of this one story.

The whole movie is practically a tribute to the early days of Marvel and superhero movies that created the momentum that MCU then built it's 30 billion empire on. This is what makes each cameo count. It isn't there just for a joke or Easter Egg moment but it ties to the theme of the story, We are revisiting the forgotten heroes, the fallen ones, the ones who never got to be. And if we are lucky the ones who still might be (please, please let us keep Daphne Keen).

It's also a reminder of how long both Jackman and Reynolds have been in this. The first X-Men movie came out 24 years ago. Reynolds was in Blade: Trinity 20 years ago. I don't think it's an accident a lot of those cameos went to the beginnings with Pyro and Electra. And even with the MCU actors reminding us they started in Fox as Evans came back as Johnny Storm. Even Jon Favreau cameo as Happy Hogan was a reminder he was once Foggy Nelson in Daredevil. This was reunion movie in more ways than one.

And the behind the scenes of those movies, the whole history of Fox Marvel films really hit you in the end. Even the failures like the last Fantastic Four. Even to the X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the Deadpool abomination there. This is what got us here. This is for all the fun we had over the years with these characters and superheroes in general. This was the start.

Of course, Deadpool wouldn't be Deadpool if they didn't desecrate and made fun of the very thing they were paying tribute too. Both the initial fight and any reference to Fox made sure of that. Reminding us that even the best parts of the past shouldn't be sacred. You should build new stories and not be afraid to change. There will be new Blade. And a new Johnny Storm. And maybe a new Deadpool and Wolverine one day too (long, long time from now apparently 😋).

And new universes give you new opportunities to meet people. Maybe even find a romance like B-15 and Peter. Or become a villain. I'm not sure how I feel about the Doom Announcement but let's see. This movie reminded us it's just one more "same face - different person" case in this multiverse.

he has his incredible self-healing ability due to the powers of the abundance. a species called the borisin, blessed by the abundance, have a nearly identical ability.

the divergent universe equation between destruction and abundance is about the borisin. blade is a destruction character, and as mentioned, possessed the ‘gift’ of the abundance.

his sword and the trace materials that are made of borisin fangs, as well as his entire color palette, have great visual similarities. they are also both specifically described with the word “sanguine.”

he is compared to a beast or described as “beastly.”

when blade was a little kid, his home was destroyed by the borisin. because of this, he swore vengeance against them and learned to craft weapons to counter them.

the borisin are also considered to be great craftsmen, creating weaponry and mechs just as he did.

but of course, back then, he didn’t have that healing ability, those “beastly” eyes and tendencies, that innate desire to hunt. something brought it out of him…

jingliu. she killed him over and over until he became inflicted with mara.

jingliu is heavily associated with the moon.

the moon induces “moon rage” in the borisins, which makes them stronger, but tears their bodies apart to do so.

additionally, blade’s mara is triggered strongly by dan heng, AKA imbibitor lunae… which translates to “moon drinker”… so of course, he also has moon motifs.

the borisins gained their immortality and healing when yaoshi split the mountains with red rivers. blade’s ult and follow-up animations feature mountains being cut through with red.

when you consider his craftsmanship, his skill at creating weapons and mechs… this parallel between himself and the borisin has existed since long before he was cursed. yingxing never had a chance.

he has become the very thing he hated most, the thing that destroyed his home, the thing he swore to hunt down for vengeance.

blade is a space werewolf and it is sooo tragic of him.

Aerin jumps in and tries to protect Mal either way. But Mal's reaction once you're safe from the Old Gods changes (and is honestly pretty sweet either way).

I hope this is good...I've never played Regretevator (surprisingly...even though I hear about it all the time and have a Roblox account I have not played a single second of it), so I just used what information was available about the character and went a little bit based on vibes. Giving your OCs scars is actually so fun and fleshes them out so well. I've seen so much writing and character design "advice" that, in an unfortunate attempt to discourage edginess*, tells you most people don't have many scars, but the truth is, they often do- and you (and they) just may not notice at first glance.

This character used to be really reckless as a teenager and wiped out on their skateboard trying to do a trick or ride down too steep a hill, getting a deep scrape. This character has shaky hands and once cut their thumb chopping fruit. This character slipped and fell on an icy sidewalk going to class and scraped up their hands catching themself. This character was a bored teenager who thought it would be funny to shoot something that wasn't an arrow from their archery bow and lost a chunk of skin where it got snagged when they let their not-arrow fly. This character had a minor laparoscopic procedure. This character tried and failed to slide down the firefighter pole on the playground and put their teeth through their lip. This character was really intense about their favourite sport or game and got a giant scrape/cut making a glorious play to win the match. This character just kept picking at that acne spot over and over.

There are so many mundane ways one can get scars, and they tell such interesting stories about one's life. This is not to say that scars from life-changing incidents are all that rare or edgy: I know plenty of folks with those, too. But almost everyone has some little scars- and when you're writing, it can be fun to think about little, almost insignificant details like these that add depth to your characters.

* - friendly reminder to do whatever you want forever with your characters. Edginess is the coward's invention and you should free yourself from its restrictive bonds.

Ergghh back in my wanting to deactivate my blog phase, at this point idc about the blades vip divide anymore bc the fandom actually sucked during book 2 (not saying none of the criticism was valid but the constant nit-picking at every minor detail was actually exhausting) and people can’t be bothered to read fanfics anymore anyway. It’s just frustrating to get 5 notes on a fic you spent months on while artwork posted at the same time gets 100+ notes…like why does one get treated significantly differently just because it’s in a different medium 🫠

serial escalation in supernatural is so funny. In Season 4 it took an entire garrison of angels fighting for months/years just to get one guy out of hell. In Season 8 they just bribe a reaper, kill off a major recurring character, and get in and out within the episode. By Season 15 a trip to hell takes less than ten minutes, can be pulled off with ingredients they already had lying around, and doesn't even waste screentime showing them getting out again because it's that much of a nonissue. Everything about the show is like this.
