Tribute

I laughed almost non-stop watching Deadpool & Wolverine. The crass and gross and the ridiculous are mixed in with just a bit of clever. And then there's the pure joy of watching to almost indestructible dudes killing each other in violent ways (it's a WB cartoon kind of fun).

But as always it's the layer below the humour that really hits. And in a prefect Deadpool way this one worked both in the movie but also on the meta level. It's the story of a failed superhero that the Avengers didn't want and whose girlfriend left. Here trying to save his world to save his friends. He gets a second chance at being who he always wanted to be but the price is abandoning everyone he came up with. MCU and Sacred Timeline is one person deal. But this is where Multiverse pays off. It means he can keep his friends and timeline. He just has to fight cybernocracy that would rather dismantle it instantly first.

And it's a story of a fallen studio which movies lost the audience and couldn't find the right way to tell it's stories (with extra layer of Disney's Marvel being on precipice of that too now). All it's properties buried and replaced for a new shinier thing. We could move on and only acknowledge the pieces that haven't been tarnished. And yet, this movie looks back at it all, and brings back the discarded ridiculed. Including the ones we never even got. Using Void to discard them and Alioth to eat them into oblivion is such a prefect metaphor you'd think it was invented for this Film. It's a prefect integration of MCU ideas for the plot of this one story.

The whole movie is practically a tribute to the early days of Marvel and superhero movies that created the momentum that MCU then built it's 30 billion empire on. This is what makes each cameo count. It isn't there just for a joke or Easter Egg moment but it ties to the theme of the story, We are revisiting the forgotten heroes, the fallen ones, the ones who never got to be. And if we are lucky the ones who still might be (please, please let us keep Daphne Keen).

It's also a reminder of how long both Jackman and Reynolds have been in this. The first X-Men movie came out 24 years ago. Reynolds was in Blade: Trinity 20 years ago. I don't think it's an accident a lot of those cameos went to the beginnings with Pyro and Electra. And even with the MCU actors reminding us they started in Fox as Evans came back as Johnny Storm. Even Jon Favreau cameo as Happy Hogan was a reminder he was once Foggy Nelson in Daredevil. This was reunion movie in more ways than one.

And the behind the scenes of those movies, the whole history of Fox Marvel films really hit you in the end. Even the failures like the last Fantastic Four. Even to the X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the Deadpool abomination there. This is what got us here. This is for all the fun we had over the years with these characters and superheroes in general. This was the start.

Of course, Deadpool wouldn't be Deadpool if they didn't desecrate and made fun of the very thing they were paying tribute too. Both the initial fight and any reference to Fox made sure of that. Reminding us that even the best parts of the past shouldn't be sacred. You should build new stories and not be afraid to change. There will be new Blade. And a new Johnny Storm. And maybe a new Deadpool and Wolverine one day too (long, long time from now apparently 😋).

And new universes give you new opportunities to meet people. Maybe even find a romance like B-15 and Peter. Or become a villain. I'm not sure how I feel about the Doom Announcement but let's see. This movie reminded us it's just one more "same face - different person" case in this multiverse.

I don't know why that (mostly) everyone at the Mount Hua Sect think that Chung Myung is a complete idiot who accidentally stumbles upon all the good things that happen for Mount Hua or makes everything worse, when it has been shown time and time again that what he does gains them allies, fame, makes them money, and makes them more powerful. He is an old man chaos demon, but he has shown himself to be very intelligent and wouldn't someone in the Sect catch on that he does practically everything on purpose?

Meanwhile everyone that he partners up with/allies with/or make enemies of catch on to his intelligence and intention through his actions very quickly after they speak with, are manipulated by him, are humbled and/or defeated by him. And they realize he does most of his actions on purpose even if they don't know why or how he's doing them

A joyous Ides of March!

What would be a suitable activity for this day? To celebrate, why not stab a tyrannt? Or how about stabbing your oppressors? Why not overthrow someone who abused their power and stole from other people, thinking they're all mighty and invincible? No one is invincible, everyone can fall victim to a riot, to a knife (or twenty-three knives). Or to a scalpel, used for surgery, wielded with precision to incise and to remove necrotic or cancerous tissue, who present a threat to the host by poisoning the body and draining its energy like a parasite, in order to save it. Sometimes a sharp force wielded without remorse is required for the greater good.

All for historical reasons concerning Julius Caesar, of course. Only hypothetically.

Book 3, Chapter 3 Differences if Aerin Didn't Rejoin the Party

Difference 1:

Aerin jumps in and tries to protect Mal either way. But Mal's reaction once you're safe from the Old Gods changes (and is honestly pretty sweet either way).

Warnings for present tense writing, blood and injury, and an ambiguous/open ending

“Come on!” Wind waves, full of energy and excitement and exhilaration to be exploring a new dungeon. Four waits patiently by their chosen passage.

“What did I tell you?” Time says as he approaches the pair. “This old man will be slowing you down.”

Time checks behind himself one more time, for one more glimpse of his boys. He can’t help the feeling that something terrible is going to happen to one of them.

Unbidden, the memory of wearing the Mask of Truth and seeing the ominous writing on Wild's slate rises to his mind.

Someone will die.

It had almost been Twilight. Goddesses, he’d almost watched his own descendant perish from a cursed wound.

He desperately wants to keep these boys, young men, heroes, sons under his wing, where he can see them and feel them close by and know they are safe.

He cannot bear to lose a single one of them.

This dungeon makes a mockery of his fears; the shadow is toying with them like a cat with a mouse, forcing them to separate, to weaken their integrity.

Time doesn’t like it.

One small consolation in all this is that he has the two youngest heroes with him still. He reminds himself that, though they are young, they are seasoned heroes, with two or more quests behind them. Yes, he wants to protect them, but he must also let them flourish.

His part in this group is to guide, to lead. With painstaking care, he will weave from diligence and experience the wings with which they will fly.

Time finally catches up to the younger pair, and Wind bounds away, down the stairs, only to stop and double back when he finds himself alone.

“Come on, come on, come on!” he begs. “I wanna see all the cool rooms and find some treasure! Somethin' tells me there’s more than 20 rupees in this place!”

“We must exercise caution, Sailor,” Time tries to corral the excitable young hero, to no avail. “The shadow could be around any corner, could have laid any number of traps for us.” Anxiety gnaws in his gut at the thought.

“Give it up, old man,” Four says with a slight chuckle as he descends the steps behind Wind. “You know there’s no stopping him when he gets like this. He doesn’t have a lantern – he can’t go far.”

Time hums in agreement and takes the first half-dozen steps at a quick walk to catch up.

The dark stairway gives way to a darker hall, lined with empty torch brackets. Keese flutter by and are quickly slain. Zols and Chuchus meet the same fate. Wind runs to and fro, checking pots within the lamplight for treasure.

The hall seems to go on forever, and Time begins to miss the sun. Wind, too, seems to grow more subdued the longer the dark persists. Four remains stoic as always, though Time can see his grip tighten on the lantern's handle.

Finally, a bright, warm light can be seen at the end of the endless tunnel, far in the distance. After a few more minutes of walking, all three heroes heave sighs of relief as the chill of darkness is slowly dispelled by the not-so-distant sunlight.

Wind finds his energy again, fairly flying toward the growing brightness. The sun greets him, limning his hair in bronze.

But when you fly too close to the sun, you get burned.

A sudden shing splits the air, like a blade being drawn. Light flashes on metal, Wind screams, and a small body is thrown to the floor.

Time's world narrows down to the whirling blades retracing from the doorway and the ominously still leg he can see just on the other side.

“WIND!”

Blood pools, and the boy remains still.

even as riley tries to obliterate him with the deadly precision of a practiced hunter coupled with the unhinged blood lust of a hunter intoxicated by the hunt sanderson keeps fighting back until he has riley flat on his back, his threaded cane pressed down tight on riley's throat to keep him still, looking into the covered eyes of the unhinged man that he knows can still see him, quietly reminding him of the hunt he abandoned before he gave in to his clear grief and agony; telling him they can take on ludwig together, take the research hall and the astral clocktower together, free the poor wizened child from his suffering together, if only riley would come back to himself, remember who he is and his purpose as a hunter; they could transcend the hunt together, gain true insight together, if only riley would remember who he was and could still be
