One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Gold Redux
The Borgias (s1 e1, "The Poisoned Chalice") / Holliday Grainger as Lucrezia Borgia
This is one of Lucrezia's first costumes, which she wears to see her father invested as Pope in 1492. We really only see it from the waist up onscreen, but a bit of the skirt is visible in the publicity shot at bottom.
It seems very likely that the look was inspired by a gown featured in The Birth of the Virgin by Domenico Ghirlandaio, painted in the 1480s:

The Winsbury Manor, Historical Residence in Ravenwood (NO CC)
Winsbury Manor is a grand Tudor-style estate built in 1490, nestled in the heart of Whispering Glen, Ravenwood. Steeped in history, this manor boasts intricate architectural details, lush landscaped gardens, and an aura of timeless elegance. With its meticulously preserved features and rich legacy, Winsbury Manor offers a rare glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of a bygone era, blending heritage with enduring charm.
Winsbury Manor stands as a testament to centuries of power and conflict. Established on land claimed by the Kingdom of Henford after their decisive victory in the Battle of Whispering Glen in 1485, the manor was completed in 1490 under the command of Lord Governor Winsbury I. Serving as Henford's seat of authority over the Kingdom of Ravenwood, it remained a symbol of dominance until the tragic Siege of Winsbury in 1532, where Dutchess Annelise Winsbury, the last resident, perished at a young age of 17, marking the fall of Henford's control. Left abandoned for decades, the estate was revived in 1609 by the Ravensworth family, who meticulously restored and modernized it through the centuries. In 2020, the Lesmana Enterprise acquired the manor, ushering in a new chapter for this storied estate, blending historical preservation with modern innovation.

Love of my Life
summary: the dagger squad meets hangman's best-kept secret
jake seresin x reader
word count: 1490
warnings: no editing, fluff
a/n: this popped into my head the other night... enjoy! also this gif makes me CHOKE ohmylord
song rec: love of my life - harry styles
masterlist
It wasn’t on purpose. Nights when you and Jake ended up at the same bar were never planned, mostly because your friends from work always wanted to go somewhere downtown, and Jake’s friends from work always wanted to go to the Hard Deck so there was never a chance for the two groups to intersect.
Tonight, however, your friends had enough of hearing about all your nights at the Hard Deck with your fighter pilot husband who drops by work every once and a while with lunch or a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. They decided to venture out to the Hard Deck tonight for your monthly get-together and you weren’t going to miss an opportunity to ogle at your husband from across the bar while he played darts and pool with his Dagger Squad friends who just so happened to be in town visiting.
And that’s exactly where you found yourself on this lovely Friday night. Your friend walked over to your standing table with another drink for you and you thanked her with a smile. She immediately started diving into some workplace gossip, keeping her voice quiet since so many of your colleagues had managed to make it out tonight. You half-listened to her go on how bad the break room refrigerator smelled the other day but your real focus was on Jake who was playing pool with Phoenix, Fanboy, and Bob. He had Bob on his team and you were surprised to see him actually give the man a chance to play without correcting or coaching him.
You knew all about the Dagger Squad, when Jake was first sent out here you followed him, even knowing this wouldn’t be a permanent duty station, and he talked about everyone he was competing against non stop. From the moment he came home after training you were getting a full rundown of the days happening (you were sworn to secrecy of the top secret events, of course). You learned quickly who was who, even if you never got the opportunity to meet them.
After the mission, you were pulling out boxes and getting ready to move what little belongings you brought over to the island when Jake came home and surprised you to your core. He accepted a teaching position here on the North Island and you were staying for the foreseeable future.
You were shocked but over the moon. Jake would be in one spot for at least a couple years and wouldn’t be off on deployments and missions so often. You could start a family and he could actually be there for all of it.
“Hello? Anybody home?” A hand waving in front of your face brought you out of memories and a trance you hadn’t realized you were in. You laughed and smiled at your friend, but not before catching the eye of Phoenix, who totally caught you staring at Jake.
“Sorry, sorry, got a little lost there.” You waved her hand out of your face and took another sip from your drink.
“I’ll say,” she laughed, “I mean, I get it.” Her eyebrows wagged and you laughed heartily, throwing your head back. She was always complimenting your choice of husband and you had to agree with her, he was fine as hell.
“Fuck, I think one of his friends just caught me staring,” you said once the laughter died down.
“Remind me again why he doesn’t tell them about you?”
“It started off as a joke,” you start, “he wanted to see how long it would take one of them to notice, and now it’s just an ongoing bet we have.”
“A bet I am about to win, by the way.” Jake suddenly appears behind you and you’re happy to see him until his words sink in.
“You’re not allowed to interfere!” You point at him and he just laughs.
“No interference, I promise.” He leans on the table you two are standing at and you almost forget about the bet for a second because his green eyes still captivate you even after all this time.
“Well, what are you doing over here then?”
“See now, that’s where it gets interesting because someone caught you looking at me,” he tips his beer over in the direction of his friends, who scatter like chickens when you turn your head to look at them, “and they bet me $20 that I couldn’t walk over here and get your phone number.”
“Hmmm, seems like fair play to me.” Your friend interjects, looking contemplatively between you and your cheating husband.
A noise comes out of your mouth, somewhere between disbelief and betrayal. You only had one month left before the bet was yours and you could claim your prize and now this happens, the perfect opportunity falls right into Jake’s lap.
“Did none of them notice the giant ring on my finger?” You hold up your wedding rings, which glint even in the dim bar lighting and Jake takes your fingers in his hand, bending them towards himself before placing a kiss on your knuckles. You swoon. It’s impossible not to. “Don’t try to distract me, you’re in trouble.”
“Come on darlin’,” His hand fell away from yours but moved slyly around your hip, where it curled around the belt loops of your shorts, and just then, while his face was inching towards yours, your wedding song came on.
“When did this song get added to the jukebox?”
“I may have put in a special request.” His smile did you in. You met him halfway and when your lips met that familiar kaleidoscope of butterflies took flight. Jake pulled away just to smile at you some more before pressing a few quick kisses to your lips. When he backed away enough, you took the chance to look over his shoulder and see what his friends thought.
The entire group was standing around, completely gobsmacked at what just occurred and you could only imagine what was running through their minds.
“After you, Mrs. Seresin,” Jake whispered in your ear. You gave him the best glare you could but he just laughed and grabbed your hand to walk you over to the group of people you already felt like you knew.
Jake chuckled as you got within ear shot. “Everyone, I’d like you to meet someone,” he pulled you under his arm and you automatically slid your own across his back, “this is my wife.” He said it with genuine pride, a stark contrast to his usual cocky tone everyone was used to.
“Wife?” Rooster repeated, dumbfounded.
“Pick your jaw up off the floor, Bradshaw.”
You ignored Jake and introduced yourself to everyone with a quick wave. “It’s nice to finally meet you all.”
There was a beat of silence while you watched everyone process what was happening, but Phoenix broke it with a laugh. “You’ve been holding out on us, Bagman!”
“Yeah, what the hell, man!” Rooster seemed downright offended that Jake would keep such a secret from them and you couldn’t help but laugh.
“It’s not all Jake’s fault,” You come to his defense, “we had a bet going, which I just lost.”
“What bet did you two have?” Bob asked, coming forward to introduce himself to you properly.
You shook his outstretched hand, smiling. “We wanted to see how long it would take for someone to figure out he was married.”
“You… you don’t wear a wedding ring?” Rooster seemed to be having the hardest time with this revelation and it was cracking you up.
Jake pulled his dog tags out from under his shirt, proudly turning them around to display his gold wedding band that perfectly matched the one around your finger. They both belonged to his grandparents and he was so proud to give you his grandmother's band on your wedding day.
Phoenix studied the two of you for a moment, watched the way you started to sway to a song and Jake immediately joined in, watched how his attention always drifted back to you, and how his entire cocky dimenor melted away as soon as you were near.
“So, what’s the story? How did you manage to bag Hangman?” Natasha asked, leaning her hands on the pool cue in front of her.
Jake pretended to be offended. “I’m not that wild.”
You roll your eyes affectionately before diving into the story of how you and Jake met. It was nothing spectacular or anything you would want to make a movie about, but it was a whirlwind romance that ended in the two of you married in the Seresin family’s backyard three summers ago.
When you finished your story, all smiles for your husband, Rooster raised his beer in a toast. “Welcome to the family, Mrs. Seresin.”
Jake couldn’t help but smile. It felt good to let the team in on his best-kept secret, even if he was gonna pay for her losing the bet later on tonight.

Venus and Cupid
I’ve been creating little deep dives into art depictions of Lady Aphrodite/Venus as a devotional act to Her! Today’s painting is Venus and Cupid by Titan.
Titian
Tiziano Vecellio, more commonly known as Titian , was born c. 1488-1490 in the Republic of Venice and died August 27, 1576 in Venice. This Italian was very influential in the style of Renaissance Venetian painting. He was successful throughout his whole life and was very versatile, talented at painting portraits, landscapes, as well as mythical and religious subjects.
Description of the Painting
Venus, sitting on the ground and leaning against a tree, holds the hands of the infant Cupid. Venus wears a red and white dress and has long brunette hair. Cupid is nude and holds an arrow. The background shows a river, mountains, a few trees, and a city.
About the Painting
Oil on canvas
Created 1510-1515
111 x 139 cm; 43.7 x 54.7 in

LADY WITH AN ERMINE /1490/ by LEONARDO DA VINCI
It is one of only four female portraits that Leonardo painted during his lifetime. The woman holding the ermine, or weasel, has been identified as Cecilia Gallerani, the mistress of the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, who Leonardo was working for at the time. She was just 16 years old at the time it was painted and was one of Leonardo’s closest female friends.
Different parts of this painting have been retouched over the years. The background has been darkened, which obscured a door that was originally present. Cecilia’s hair has been lengthened. The shadows between her fingers on her hand have been darkened. Her dress has been darkened as well.
Many aspects of this painting make it revolutionary and further support just how genius Leonardo was. First off, this oil painting was done in the very first years following the invention of oil as a medium. It appears that by this time, Leonardo had not only taken to the new art medium but had mastered it.
Second, Cecilia is depicted at a half turn, known as contrapposto, which was an art style actually invented by Leonardo. Prior to him, the sitters of portraits were usually depicted looking either straight on or in full profile.
Thirdly, the very soft and subtle shading (shading without borders) that can be seen on Cecelia’s neck and face, called sfumato, was a technique also invented by Leonardo. In fact, his fingerprints were found on the painting, suggesting that he used his fingers to blend the paint.

These are the earliest (finished) Renaissance paintings in the whole Iberian Peninsula: the musician angels frescoes in the València Cathedral, Valencian Country.
In the year 1469, a fire destroyed the main altar of València's Medieval cathedral, so they needed to rebuild it. In 1472, Roderic de Borja -who would later become the Pope Alexander VI-, came back to València after spending almost 20 years in Rome with his uncle Pope Callixtus III. And he came back with two Italian painters: Paolo da San Leocadio and Francesco Pagano.
At the time, the Renaissance hadn't yet spread outside of Italy. It was starting around 1490 and in the early 1500s that it spread to the rest of Europe. But these two Italian painters who came to València were already painting in Renaissance style.
At first, the Cathedral authorities were unsure of these artists, considering that they had to paint the main altar, the most important place in the whole cathedral. For this reason, they asked them to prove their skills. Paolo de San Leocadio and Francesco Pagano started painting the Shepherds' Adoration, but their skills impressed the cathedral authorities so quickly that they didn't even need to finish it before going on to paint the altar.
The unfinished painting The Shepherds' Adoration (1472) by Paolo da San Leocadio and Francesco Pagano.
A later reform during the Baroque period considered these fresco paintings old-fashioned and covered them with a new Baroque vault. The Renaissance frescoes were brought to light again in 2004. Experts expected to find the frescoes covered by a layer of lime and mostly destroyed, but they were pleasantly surprised to find them in a great state of conservation.

Peter Apian (1495-1552) Michael Ostendorfer (ca. 1490-1549) Artist
Astronomicum Caesareum
Ingolstadt 1540
Rare Book Division
This work is considered to be one of the most beautiful and spectacular contributions to the art of I6th-century book making. Astronomicum Caesareum was published by Petrus Apianus (Peter Apian), one of the foremost mathematicians, astronomers, and cartographers of the ith century. The book's title translates to "Imperial Astronomy" and is a direct reference to its two dedicatees, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and King Ferdinand I of Spain.
This is a particularly vibrant, pristine copy of Astronomicum Caesareum, which is perhaps Apian's most notable published work. The book features more than 20 elaborately decorated rotating disks, called volvelles, which, when manipulated, represent the functions of the astrolabe and other astronomical instruments used to calculate the positions of stars and planets. As one might imagine, over time and with use, these moving paper elements do not often survive intact.
This book was extremely cool. You can’t really tell from the photo how thick that stack of discs is, but it is… uh…. thick.
Transcript:
Andreas Cellarius (ca. 1596-1665)
Harmonia Macrocosmica
Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius 1661
Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division
The only celestial atlas published in the Netherlands during the golden age of Dutch cartography, Harmonia Macrocosmica completes the multivolume history of all creation first conceived by Gerardus Mercator in 1569. It consists of 29 charts depicting the competing worldviews of Claudius Ptolemy, Martianus Capella, Nicolaus Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe. Engraved plates in the Baroque style illustrate more than 400 pages of text and depict the motions of the sun, moon, and planets, as well as delineations of classical and biblical constellations. In the preface, Cellarius notes his intention to create a second volume to address the new astronomical observations made available by the invention of the telescope. Unfortunately, this was never realized, due to his death in 1665.

I read your post about sittow's portrait of Catherine. I am leaning towards Catherine as there is a tapestry of her and Arthur's wedding (although they say the tapestry was after Arthur died) it is worth noting that it looks like the sittow painting. From what I found out the date is about 1500. Is that correct or am I wrong?
So you're asking if it is indeed Catherine depicted within the tapestry and if the tapestry is the right date for the wedding? (1501)
Well, we know that before Catherine even arrived to England, engravings of the wedding did exist.
(Here her sleeves are much too narrow to be from 1501-that's 15th century for sure.)
Thus you are rightfully sceptical.
There seems to be a whole of tapestries thought by some to depict the betrothal of Arthur and Catherine and eventually their wedding.
These tapestries(as far as I know) are located in Magdalen College, Oxford.
And potentially some of them might be.
But whoever labelled this one as Catherine and Arthur, didn't think it through:
Yes, we have several ladies wearing cofia de tranzado(Spanish headwear). But the central lady here(under the tapestry with the pomegranate), has a crown and sceptre. But since her husband doesn't-it means only she is the ruler.
Which makes zero sense for Catherine and Arthur. And you won't get away with the excuse that Arthur's attributes might have been removed(altered) after he died. Because even if Arthur as prince of Wales got depicted with a scepter and crown-his wife wouldn't be.
While queen consorts are depicted with crowns and sceptre at coronations, have you ever seen a princess consort to be depicted with one? I haven't.
The cofia+pomegranate+ sceptre and crown. Points to the woman being either Isabella I or Joanna I. But since Joanna's husband almost immediately proclaimed himself a king-that ambitious man would never have a tapestry depicting her with a crown and him without made.
Thus it should be Isabella and Ferdinand.
Isabella became Queen in 1474, while Ferdinand only in 1479(when his father died.) No shame in admitting his father died after her brother did.
But the big question is, who did commission this?
Several couples come to mind.
Philip and Joana(after 1500), Manuela and Isabella or Maria, Ferdinand and Isabella themselves, and Henry VII for the wedding of Catherine to his son.
The decor of the wedding of Infanta with the English prince could certainly showcase the ancestry of both bride and groom. So perhaps some showed some of Spanish history.
And it doesn't matter that this tapestry has only pomegranates and no roses. Because potentially you would have Spanish history with Spanish symbolism on one side and English history with Tudor symbolism on the other side.
So it truly boils down to the question where does the fashion fit?
For Catherine and Arthur, the tapestries should have been finished by 1501 or 1500(because she was supposed to arrive earlier), and frankly-this is not based upon a real wedding, otherwise, gable hoods would be there!
Hence we'd expect Netherlandish fashion either of the late 1490s or from year 1500 when Henry VII visited the Netherlands.
(We have windows depicting Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, and Philip and Joana. But they are not that helpful in this case.)
-although they showcase similar underparlets.
For Catherine and Henry, the fashion of the early to mid-1500s.(it is unlikely that with heated relationships of the late 1500s, that Henry VII would waste money on it then, and in 1509-not enough time I think.)
The problem is this is not the best quality picture and I failed to find a better one. Because the dresses between the 1490s and mid-1500s didn't change much in the Netherlands-you'd have to go by headwear or necklace.
Headwears are either Spanish or type-which appears much in tapestries-but I could never place it:
(So headwears are useless.)
And necklaces in this quality-I am not sure if these are the 1490s style or the more elaborate 1500s style.
Thus I cannot tell if the necklaces are 1490s or 1500s style.
So, against my best judgment I am forced to date the tapestry based upon the male outfits, something I am not good at!:
However, since this one resembles the fashion of men in the 1510s so much(way more than any in the 1500s). (But female outfits don't fit the 1510s.)
Thus I would say that our tapestry is not meant to be for the wedding of Catherine and Arthur(d. in 1502).
More likely for the planned wedding of Henry and Catherine in 1505(-which was postponed indefinitely until his father died). Their 1509 wedding was private, so if these were ever used, it would most likely be for their coronation in 1509.
Or potentially(if they were finished), they might have also been used when Mary Tudor got married by proxy to Charles V in 1507.
(People call it betrothal but in the eyes of Tudors it was a wedding).
And because Henry VII was strongly in favour of that marriage-we cannot rule it was meant for Mary's match, rather than to have anything to do with Catherine. (Showcasing side of the groom-his ancestry.)
We would need to see as much of this tapestry series( in HD preferably) and study it in detail to figure it out.
But there might be a good reason why you think it is Catherine by Sittow-genetics.
It's possible the Netherlandish artists got inspired by her sister Joanna(who also resembled their mother a lot) and used her as inspiration for Isabella's face.

On January 7th 1451 a Papal Bull from Pope Nicolas IV enabled the foundation of Glasgow University.
Today The University is 574 years old and is the second oldest University in Scotland after St Andrews.
Now housed mainly in Glasgow's West End the origins on the institution however lie in the city's oldest street, in the Merchant City.
The university was inaugurated in 1451 at the request of William Turnbull, Bishop of Glasgow after a Papal Bull was issued by Pope Nicholas V. It was part of King James II's plan to bring Scotland up to speed with England – which already had two universities, Oxford and Cambridge.
The original Bull was among the treasures of the Metropolitan See taken to France by Archbishop Beaton at the Reformation but the modern University retains a transcript made in 1490. Beaton also took with him the University mace which had been made in 1465. Unlike other treasures, this was recovered and returned to the University 30 years later, and is still in its possession today.
Lectures were originally held in Glasgow Cathedral, before moving to nearby buildings on the city's High Street in 1457.
In 1563, Mary, Queen of Scots granted the university a 13-acre site on Glasgow's High street that had, until the Reformation, been home to a Dominican (Blackfriars) friary. The Old College ran along the busy High Street, with a main gateway in its centre that led through to two courtyards and walled gardens.
But as student numbers rocketed, the university was force to sell up their Old College campus and move somewhere cheaper. In 1863 it was bought for £100,000 to the City of Glasgow Union Railway Company, to be used as a goods yard. It was later demolished and housing was built there instead.
The decision was heavily criticised at the time as an act of "cultural vandalism." Nevertheless, the Uni heading west to Gilmorehill – away from the polluted air and the hustle and bustle of the city.
Work started on the new site in the west end in 1866, with the university taking up official residence in 1870.
Prolific architect George Gilbert Scott undertook the grand task of designing the new University buildings – which were the biggest in Britain beside the Houses of Parliament at the time.
The decision not to open up the commissioning process to other designers was met with controversy… Not to mention Scott's Gothic style went against the grain of the architectural landscape of the city, which ventured towards a Greek design.
According to Glasgow Uni's website, esteemed architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson was not too impressed. He complained Scott wouldn't pay the project the attention it deserved because of how busy he was in his career.
He also added: "There is not a modern Gothic revival building of more than ten years standing that any one cares a straw about." Meoooow.
Nevertheless, Scott pressed on - building one of the most striking landmarks in the west end. The Bute and Randolph halls were completed after Scott's death in by his son Oldrid in 1891, which also included the Gothic bell tower, which stands at 278 feet high.
The Lion and Unicorn staircase was also famously moved, brick by brick, to Gilmorehill – now leading into the west wing of the main building beside the University Chapel.
Pearce Lodge, which sits at the bottom of University Avenue, is also formed by various parts of the Old College buildings. The stonework entrance to the original High Street building was also carefully erected at the gatehouse of the new campus.
The university expanded further over the years – including the A-listed reading room in the 1930s. It also snapped up a number of Victorian terraced houses, where the departments of Psychology, Computing Science and most of the Arts Faculty are based. Elsewhere. the leafy Garscube estate was bought in 1947 for The Veterinary Sciences school in Bearsden.
So, next time you see that regal clock tower and spire looming against the west end skyline, you can remember Glasgow Uni's journey across the city to its rightful place.

“The model, 30, who is best known as the ex-girlfriend of Harry Styles,”
Embarrassing to not even being recognized as an actress considering you’re on the jury panel of The Venice Festival. As for being best known as…
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-13805585/Harry-Styles-ex-girlfriend-Taylor-Russell-shows-toned-tummy-81st-Venice-Film-Festival-poses-beneath-bright-red-umbrella.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=social-twitter_dailymailceleb#comments-13805585
She looks beautiful. But yeah, that caption and the headline are gross (although completely typical for the Daily Mail). They do mention she's an actress in the article, but the headline and that caption are all about Harry. Because she really isn't well-known, but people reading that rag will say, "Oooh, Harry Styles ex-girlfriend!" and then the DM gets their clicks.

if i were to do a genuine english adaptation of el ministerio del tiempo:
it's set up by henry vii, of course. same time period as ferdinand and isabella; slightly different priorities. it's set up in the 1490s, at the peak of henry's pretender paranoia, and it's very barebones to begin with
for henry it's the solution to all his problems and the modern ministry suffers velázquez-style meddling (and generic meddling) trying to stop him from meeting famous saints/going backwards in time and killing richard iii as a baby/taking out perkin warbeck/stealing chocolate from the future and playing candy crush instead of ruling
the facial composite draftsman is not velázquez but hans holbein, who is constantly distracted because he has portraits to finish, damn it, and henry viii is not a man who likes to be kept waiting
the government faced massive budget cuts under george i and margaret thatcher because george i didn't give a shit about the sanctity of the past and, well, thatcher was thatcher. the ministry doesn't like to talk about the thatcher years or the truss weeks
i'd definitely have a sixteenth-century character like alonso, but maybe one who's going to be burnt at the stake for heresy in the 1540s/50s
i like the idea of a twelfth-century character who has significant trouble adjusting to modern english - but then the more modern characters are screwed every time they go to the past
also an early 2000s character - it's recent enough for them to be a modern touchstone but distant enough to have a fair bit of change
there's a few moments that everyone tries to change, like 1066 or brexit, but the absolute worst one is the gunpowder plot. guy fawkes' life is riddled with interventions and missions
and, for the last time, robin hood is not real and you cannot meet him, as shakespeare found out the hard way

Venus Anadyomene
If you didn’t know, I’m making a few nice little posts about different artistic depictions of Lady Aphrodite (many are technically Lady Venus). I’ve already written about The Birth of Venus (the one by Botticelli and also the one by Cabanel) and the statue Venus Victrix by Canova. Today’s artwork is the painting titled Venus Anadyomene by Titian. I’m not even close to an expert on art or art history so there’s a good chance that there will be an error in this post- if you notice one let me know. Anyways, Venus Anadyomene!
Venus Anadyomene (The Goddess Rising from the Sea) stands nude in the water, washing her long, reddish-brown hair. The wringing of her hair is a reference to this statue, as a way for Titian to prove he could “rival the art of antiquity”.
About the Painting
This painting was created around 1520 using oils on canvas. With dimensions of 75.8 cm × 57.6 cm (29.8 in × 22.7 in), it is displayed the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh. This painting was owned by many throughout the world, from Christina of Sutherland to Francis Egerton, 7th Duke of Sutherland.
Fun Facts
- Aphrodite/Venus Anadyomene is one of Her most common epithets to be painting, as so many liked to depict Her birth from the sea
- the small seashell next to the goddess is meant to identify the subject of the painting by referencing Her birth on a large seashell as seen in other art (notably Boticelli’s Birth of Venus)
I hope you learned something, I certainly did! If you have a favorite artistic depiction of Lady Aphrodite or Lady Venus or one you would like to see me cover, please let me know!
